What a great spot to see and feel history, the admission price of 400 leks for two of us is very reasonable. There is no guided tour here, you just walk around by yourself and it's perfect!!! You walk out on the field in the middle as well. There's also a really cool mosaic in one the rooms.

It looks much better in pictures than in real life. Expect to pay around 4 euros to enter it. Go watch it if you have nothing else to do or you extremelly into archeology.

Amphitheater of Durres's monumental piece of architecture art and balkan history. I'm almost feel like time travel back to II Century. Very pleasure place for history lover! Worth 300 leke/person for everyone

This is our second time coming here in five years. There is a 2000 year old story written and lived in these walls. It definitely needs a lot of work to preserve it and make it more interesting, because this amphitheater is a treasure that needs to be known by everyone. We still enjoyed it. My 9 year young daughter was very excited to visit this gem and she loved it.

So much history this place has to offer! This amphitheater is the only one in Albania and its the second one for its capacity in the Balkan! The worst thing about it is that the Government and the City members dont do any investment in it for 100 different reasons. So sad for our city touristic future.

A lot of history here. If you go to the street above the amphitheater, you can have an ample view of the complex. Worth going there.

One of the oldest Amphitheaters in Europe. Visitors can climb old seats, stand in the middle of the theater (and perform if you want). It's not really big, in 10 -15 minutes you can cover inside and outside. Cost at the time of the visit was about US $3 per person. Still, ancient history you can touch and make your imagination wonder is priceless.

Nice and interesting place to explore. Entrance is 300 lek per person, but is really poorly maintained. It's full of trash and garbage and lights are broken. There are very few explanations, but you can spend 15-20 min here

Great place to visit but poor service. I went there the last Sunday of October. The last Sunday of each month you can visit all the historical museums and parks without paying if you are Albanian. But the lady who worked there didn't let me to go in,because she told me that I have to pay. I went to the Archeological museum too, and there I could visit the place without paying. The law is not the same 😉🤔

This ancient amphitheatre from 2nd century still needs a lot of archeological work but it's former glory is evident and it's intertwined history with Christianity is evident.

Absolutely stunning. I've visited many amphitheaters and colleseums, but this one was the first that let you walk around all the grounds for the entry price. About €3 to enter per person, and it was a blast. Being able to walk the underground portions put into perspective how big these kind of things actually were/are.

Ancient amphitheatre to rival anything outaide of Rome. Just 200 Leke for adults to enter, free for kids under 12. Middle of the city. Slightly rundown and not much info posted. But you can explore everywhere. Assume 20minutes to an hour to explore thoroughly.

The Amphitheater is of Roman origin and was constructed under the reign of Emperor Trajan. He launched many building programs besides this amphitheater, such as the Baths of Trajan, Trajan's Forum and Trajan's Bridge. This is the largest amphitheater ever built in the Balkans and once held over 15,000 people. 1/3 of this site was excavated in the 1960s and the rest in the 1980s. It was destroyed twice by earthquakes. You would think there would be room around this amphitheater to keep it safe and protected but that is not the case. There are many houses around it at not too far a distance. It is said that these building efforts have really hurt the long term preservation of the site. In 2013 it was named on of the most endangered cultural heritage sites in Europe. Inside, there is grass and dirt in the middle with ancient areas in the perimeter. There is a chapel with a well and an open window to the center. There are several galleries which are cave-like areas where animals and other items were held which mostly are empty or have dirt and weeds in them now. A couple areas are fenced off as the steps down are destroyed and it would be too dangerous to allow people to enter.

Smaller excavated Roman Era amphitheater. Cheap to get in, and good for a 15-20 minute self tour. Located in the heart of the city, with similar attractions nearby.

Absolutely worth going at least once in your life. Walking through the galleries and stopping to take it all in, knowing you are standing on the stairs where gladiators prepared before going on the arena to fight for their lives. The center of the amphitheatre has not been escavated because it was used as burial grounds, which is still fascinating to know. There is still much to be discovered, the current galleries would not take particularly long to explore either. Bring a bright flashlight as there are a couple of galleries that are longer and very dark.

Amphitheater is always the part of the history and and the place where you feel it in full. Amphietater in Durrës much less interesting than in the other places where I've been. But, if you roam around it, you will find really interesting places.

The ruins of the Roman amphitheater are in the middle of the center of Durrës and would be hard to miss if you're looking for whatever little remains of the ancient part of the city. You might be tempted not pay the admission price because most of the ruins are visible from the streets that surround it. But if you're a lover of archaeology and you want to get a closer look at the location of gladiator fights in a Roman province, a stroll inside is essential. You might have to do a little bit of careful climbing, but it's part of the adventure. Well worth the detour.

The Roman Amphitheater of Durrës was built under emperor Trajan in 2nd century and was destroyed twice by earthquakes in the 6th and 10th centuries. It is still preserved very well, considering everything. Its capacity was estimated from 15000 to 18000 spectators. It was discovered in 1966 and it is a place you must see while visiting the city.

The place is OK, it's cheap to get in but nothing special to see. If they dig out a bit more and cater for international tourists it will help. It's one of the handful of places to visit in Durres so you might as well pop in to it.

The Durrës Amphitheatre is an ancient marvel that transports visitors back in time to the heart of Roman civilization. This remarkably preserved archaeological site, located near the shores of the Adriatic Sea, is a testament to the grandeur of the past. The amphitheatre's construction, dating back to the 2nd century AD, was once capable of accommodating up to 20,000 spectators for various events and gladiatorial contests. Its massive stone walls and tiered seating create an awe-inspiring atmosphere, and the underground chambers, once used for staging and animal housing, provide a fascinating glimpse into the logistical aspects of ancient entertainment. Whether you're a history enthusiast or simply appreciate the beauty of ancient architecture, the Durrës Amphitheatre is a must-visit destination that evokes the grandeur of a bygone era.

It was closed so we couldn’t enter and honestly there is nothing left from it me and my girlfriend have been into so many historical places in Albania and dures specially is more of a tourist traps nothing interesting and nothing left from those historical places so we did not pay for any other castles and tower’s because they don’t deserve to pay for. Honestly it is a fantasy as people talk about it a lot 😅

It is a place of great historical importance, but the preservation is lacking. A lot of the areas which have been dug out are not visitable because of the bad smell and bad conditions. Not to mention that a part of the Amphitheatre is still undiscovered because of legal reasons. All in all I would say that is is worth a visit if you are in Durrës, but it does have so much more potential that it makes you kind of sad.

Unbeliavable value to human history. It is a pity how Albanians (am myself one) allow their history to be devalued like that. The amphitheater has someone's home inside it and people are also living in extremely close proximity. I hope people will wake up and take care of their treasures...

(Translated by Google) It is much smaller in size than the Roman Coliseum, but the largest amphitheater in the Balkans. It is interesting that it was only discovered in 1966, and its exploration has been ongoing ever since. It is estimated that approx. There were 15,000 people in its auditorium. It is worth finding an early Christian chapel with a baptismal pool and beautiful wall mosaics. Due to its size, the tunnel connecting the city with the city was very impressed with us (only a part of it can be visited). We can also look at animal cages and the excavated foundations of a few houses.

You have to climb the stairs that take you to a panoramic platform overlooking the square, the mosque, the fountain, it is located above it. Built in the II century, during the reign of Emperor Trajan, with impressive dimensions - 132 meters by 113 meters, and the size of the arena is 61 by 42 meters. A scene of many gladiatorial battles that could be watched by nearly 20,000 people. Unfortunately, a small part was discovered by him as a larger undiscovered part is at the base of the hill and this makes archeological excavations difficult, and is surrounded by many buildings. It was used until the 5th century for gladiatorial fights, and in the 6th century a burial chapel was built in one of the galleries, dedicated to St. Astyus, the first bishop and martyr of Drach. On its walls you will see very well preserved mosaics. You will also see well-preserved frescoes. In the evening, the amphitheater is beautifully lit, as is everything around.

(Translated by Google) The live amphitheater looks completely different than in the movies found on the Internet, which makes it hard to recognize that it is this amphitheater. It is worth seeing places related to the culture and history of the city. (Translated by Google) The place is good, historical. Gradually declines. We need to make real efforts and preserve what our ancestors created. Very interesting. It seems that there is nothing to watch, but these walls evoke historical motives. (Translated by Google) An impressive monument in the middle of downtown Durrës. Unfortunately there was no way to see it from the inside. The theater, which was one of the largest of its time with 15,000 seats, had been buried and undiscovered for thousands of years (Original) Ein eindrucksvolles Monument mitten in der Innenstadt von Durrës. Although you can pay the admission fee to go inside, there is also a small walkway around the perimeter of the amphitheater that allows you to see inside.

I love ancient Amphitheatres and this one is in quite decent condition! It costs just 200leks to get in. Compared to other Amphitheatres (in Italy, France), they could do more in terms of signage to educate on the history, but at least they’re treating it like a historical museum. It’s technically still being excavated as it wasn’t discovered until just 1966

The amphitheater was built in the 2nd century and began to be excavated in the last century. Very memorable place. It was also able to accommodate 20,000 people!

Well worth the 300 LEK admission. This byzantine era amphitheatre has been partially excavated. Guest are allowed to self guide themselves around the ruins. It is tightly tucked between homes. You can climb the steps and imagine yourself watching gladiators 2000 years ago.

If u have visited Rome, Verona, El Jem or any other good looking amphitheatre and you are not really interested in the story of the bricks development of the construction this place will not impress you. But if this is the first chance for u to be closer to the history and possibility to literally touch it than probably you should go there. Anyhow the entrance fee is around 2€ so if you have a free hour or two you can spend it there. The area is well maintained and clean, also some beautifications are in progress.

Nice day out with family. Plenty to see if you like archaeological sites and ruins, it is a long walk around with some uneven ground where it is difficult to walk. Make sure to wear comfortable shoes for climbing. Lots of shaded areas yo stop and rest The coffee shop is very overpriced but comes in handy for cold refreshments after the big walk. We went on Saturday and there was no parking available it is better to catch a bus if you can. Lots of people around but the place is huge so it doesn't feel over crowded. Expect to pay an entrance fee 1000 LK per adult and 500 for a child over 12

We arrived a little after 9, the place was still closed, but a few seconds after we arrived, a gentleman came and opened for us, we paid and started our visit... I could just imagine that amphitheatre packed with the crowds cheering for their favourite gladiator. A pice of history uncovered, showing even the early history of Christianity present in the place, when a part of the amphitheatre was transformed into a church.

Costs around 2.5 euro per person to get in. An interesting sight to see but nothing too special. It's cool to go inside and see the steps

The biggest Roman amphitheater on the Balkan peninsula! Definitely worth a visit if you are in the area. And there is no need to pay the entrance fee, just walk around it and you will have a great view from above!
