Don't be confused by the name. It is not a castle. The area where it used to be is now a place where they have fancy restaurants and expensive shops. It is nice, I am not saying otherwise, but just so you have clear expectations. You can grab something to eat or have a drink and you'll enjoy it.

This is the house where the secret police under the old communist state kept all their files . It has very very long lists of people who 'disappeared', and of those were executed. Chilling place. How to rule through fear.

Amazing museum with a lot of history, not exactly a beautiful one but is important to learn and remember to not let it happen again. Explanations in English, two floors, bunker and a lot espionage equipment. It costs 700 LEK. Definitely a must visit place in Tirana.

This is a really cool museum. You can learn a lot about the Albanian secret service from years ago. A lot of things are translated in English,so you'll be able to understand what is going on. There are some videos playing, a lot of old equipment. It would have been nice if the place was a bit more interactive. I wanted to touch things and act like a spy on my pics. Don't forget to go into the bunker that is in front of the building!

Very lovely place especially for tourists. There are a lot of restaurants and bars, gelato and gifts. Very relaxing stroll but don’t go too fast, you’ll be out the other side in no time.

Converting an historical fort into a sort of duity free mall is highly criticable… It’s the price to pay to put puplic value buildings in the hand of private interest. Be fare don’t 5 stars for that! You legitimate this behavior.

Um, not a castle, just a bazaar featuring restaurants and such, surrounded by a wall. Couldn't find anything special here.

Impressive fortress that dates back to the Ottoman era. Although the castle has been reconstructed over the years, it still retains much of its historical charm and character. Several restaurants, cafes and shops have been built in and around its walls. There is also a small museum inside the castle, but we did not go in. A must-see in Tirana!

Tirana Castle has undergone a magnificent transformation, blending the charm of its historic exterior with a modern and bustling socialites' hub within. The well-designed space inside showcases a contemporary open bazaar concept, housing some of the city's best restaurants and shops. Strolling through the castle's exterior evokes a sense of nostalgia, reminding us of its historical significance. Once inside, you're greeted with a vibrant and refined ambiance, perfect for an unforgettable dining experience. Among the gems inside, restaurants like Gzona, Ismet Shehu, Nama Sushi, and Lezzet take center stage, offering culinary delights that satisfy the most refined taste buds. Tirana Castle has truly become a cultural and culinary landmark, where history meets modernity in a seamless fusion. A must-visit destination for both locals and tourists seeking a taste of tradition and the contemporary flair! #TiranaCastle #HistoricCharm #ModernHub #OpenBazaarConcept #BestRestaurants #CulinaryDelights #SocialitesSpace #RefinedAmbiance #CulturalLandmark #CulinaryFusion #RestaurantReview #FoodieFinds #FoodieDelights #TasteBudsTingling #HistoricTreasure #CulinaryGems #CityOfTirana #FoodLover #CulinaryAdventure #FoodieTravels #ExploreTirana #CulturalHeritage #TasteOfHistory

(Translated by Google) The castle was a Mansio-Mutatio type Egnatia road station. It was the center of a settlement, labeled with a variety of names since the first centuries of our era. Tirkan (IV century e.), Tergiana (1297), when the chancellery of its ruler Karli I Anzhu was established, and in today's form Tyranna (1505) according to Barlet. This type is still not fully specified. But the castle, the most ancient testimony of this city, is located exactly where the old and new roads connecting the capital and then all of Albania - the north to the south, the east to the west - were crossed and crossed. In the premises of the Fortress of Tirana there are several traditional houses which have created the style of Tirana's civic building. In the buildings within the castle of Tirana have inhabited members of the ruling families of the city and therefore they are also considered as buildings of the first local administration. Each of the old streets, before entering Tirana, was dominated by a castle or fortress. The castle of Lalmit (2nd century BC) was located on the hill where the Erzeni river took the turn and allowed the road to Petrela. Tujan Castle, a stone-shaped fortified square, where traces of life come from the first period of iron. Rebuilt in the 4th and 4th centuries, it was the gateway to the Dibër-Tirana-Durrës corridor. On the other side, near the mountain of Villa where the straits of Krraba are located, was the Illyrian Partheni town, Persqopi (III-III century BC), whose inhabitants were later displaced to Petrela. The castle of Dorëz on the hill between the river of Trevel and Piol (Iron Age), then Ndroq Castle, the castle of Preza and the fortress of Ishmi, all together, these ancient and medieval fortresses constituted the protection district of Tirana. Tirana's castle was and remained the historical nucleus of Tirana's treasury and administrative residence during the Middle Ages. As such, it continued to exist in the nineteenth century. of XVII when the city of Tirana lay around it, having a civic center with the culinary (social cultural complex) built by Sulejman Pasha, the North American craftsman market, Namazgjane and the Tabak bridge from the east, government buildings inside the land castle. On both sides of the castle, the fortress was set up on the banks of the Lana River. It was supposed that in 1640, Ahmet Bey performed rebuilding works on the perimeter walls of the castle by raising them in height over the antique structures. His work was also the long tower that is still partially in good shape. The castle suffered damage again during the interfeudal wars of the XVIII century, when Ahmet Kurt's troops collided with Berat pasha with the Bushatllins. The people of Tirana enclosed within it were defended with heroism and the castle was not occupied by either of them. Of this time are the firearms system for firearms at the top of the perimeter walls. After 1814 the Castle of Tirana became the residence of its new rulers; Toptans from Kruja, who built two houses one for housing and the other waiting for today. During the twentieth century, when it lost its original defense function, the greatest damage was noted. She lost part of the surrounding walls and almost did not allow it to be understood by the remains, her full stylistic formulation. However, it still remained a government mansion or the most prominent place for them even today. The Academy of Sciences, the People's Assembly and the National Art Gallery are today on the site of the Castle. The Tirana Community with the Institute of Monuments of Culture are paying close attention to this fundamental monument of the program "Return on Identity". First in this conception, the Castle of Tirana was and should be treated in our era as the historical and cultural nucleus of the Capital.

Visited on the 11/12/19. The museum was closed at the moment due to the earthquake. The ladies at the reception didn't know when they museum will reopen again since they're waiting for an answer for the responsible authorities to determine if it can be opened again. Anyways, I think that this kind of information should be posted somewhere online just to avoid unnecessary trips.

Good overview of how the secret police worked during the communist era. It is said to be a good complement to what you see in BunkArt, another museum in the city. I did not have time to go to the latter, but still appreciated the resources and facts presented here.

This review is about 1 week Visit to Albania in the month of October 2021. Generally, the flight was pleasant, and the ticket was cheap and all that is due to the pandemic and the world just started to open. We stayed in the city of Tirana, the capital of Albania, It was long flight, with no service at all with no entertainment on board. Just few passengers and we are all with Masks. On arrival the weather was nice, some days were cold, others were with clear sunny skies. Make sure to have right comfy shoes, clothes and small backpack going with you all the time. Hotels are Cheap and very much affordable with minimal services and comfort, as we are on the go, that should be fine. Crime. Public security is generally good, particularly in Tirana, and Albanians are very hospitable to visitors. Crime and violence do occur in some areas. Food is bit challenging, but its as per your budget and taste. Most of the places can be visited in 30 minutes or less. Castle of Krujë is one must go to place, the Castle withstood three massive sieges from the Turks respectively in 1450, 1466 and 1467. The Kruja Bazaar is famous for being one of the oldest in Albania, also the Skanderbeg square. Churches, Wine Houses, fine dining, happy hours and all what you desire. Where every you go, first option is cash

Also known as Fortress of Justinian/Justinian's Fortress now holds souvenir shops, bars, restaurants and cafes. The foundations that have been incorporated into the pedestrian street are all that remains of Tirana's original castle, a military stronghold dating from some time between the 4th and 6th centuries. There's also a stretch of defensive wall further along the street that dates back to Ottoman times. The Toptani family from Kruja took possession of the castle around 1800. Still a nice place to hang out.

This is one of the best thing in Tirana. They decided to "use" the old castle and transform it into a restaurant area. It's very modern and the offer there is a amazing. There are not only coffe shops and restaurants but also a few jewelleries, some souvenir shops and so on. I have also had the chance to try one for the restaurants there and the atmosphere is simply amazing

This is a great museum... A little pricy I think, but very very interesting. Lots of great information and exhibits. Couple of good videos... No gift shop or anything like that (which is refreshing). You do get the sense that you are being watched all the time though after a while... Spooky! Well worth the visit though.

Beautiful building, central location. The museum really gives you a good impression of the communist past of Albania. Well organised. A lot of documents are in Albanian only, but nevertheless the museum teaches you a lot, all video's have subtitles.

Interesting information and lots of surveillance objects to look at, decent amount is translated in English but not everything. Good snapshot into the surveillance techniques used by the communist regime and also acknowledges the victims. Can be a bit of a downer but that’s to be expected.

Bit of a disappointing museum after all we had heard. It's interesting to hear about the secret police and see examples of their methods etc. but the museum doesn't really have a clear flow/story to lead you through, more just standalone rooms of facts. It's 700LEK to get in which for me is overpriced for what you get.

(Translated by Google) In this museum you can see how its own population was spied in the period after the Second World War and the 1990s. The house was originally a hospital (you), there is also something to be found about the founder. But impressive to see on what scale spying happened and what resources were used then. Every large international hotel was spied as standard. Tip: you can also find a shelter in the front garden. It is a bit hidden, but if you look closely you will see it. A very well curated and interesting museum. Plenty of information that is put into context of Albania's history (vs. Bunk'Art which I found to be a bit of an information dump). A bit more expensive that others (LEK 700), but definitely worth the price. My main criticism is that they could have had more explanation around the paper documents displayed: lots pieces all in Albanian, but no translation.

  • 3/5 Huba H. 5 years ago on Google
As a Hungarian, I can relate to this museum. I am afraid, if someone is less aware of the history of ex-communist countries, the exhibition is not giving a throughout exploration of the absurdity of the system.

Fortress of Justinian or simply known as Tirana Castle is a castle in Tirana, Albania. Its history dates back before 1300 and is a remnant from the Byzantine-era. The fortress is the place where the main east-west and north-south roads crossed, and formed the heart of Tirana. Very nice place!

Set inside the remaining walls of an old castle, the space is filled with attractive restaurants and cafes, with a few little shops sprinkled among them. The atmosphere here is lovely and it’s a great place to spend some time. There are additional cafes along the outside of the walls with large patios, and many trees providing lots of cooling shade. This is a pedestrian street so it’s a quieter space to sit and enjoy some downtime and people watching.

I had an incredible morning at the castle. Apart from the friendly environment and the diversity of all those shops and restaurants, I can confirm you can expect to have an amazing experience there. I was visiting the castle with my daughter and by mistake I forgot to take with me the bag. Fortunately after teaching the administrative staff, Sara one of the employees was more than helpful and willing to help me find the bag. Great experience and great staff!

Tirana Castle left me disappointed with its overpriced offerings. While the historical significance of the castle is intriguing, the entrance fee and additional charges seemed excessive for the limited attractions available. The castle itself is modest in size, and the lack of extensive exhibits or activities did not justify the high cost. Furthermore, the surrounding facilities and amenities were also overpriced, making it challenging to fully enjoy the experience without breaking the bank. While the castle's panoramic views of the city are undoubtedly impressive, it wasn't enough to compensate for the feeling of being overcharged for a relatively simple visit. Overall, while the Tirana Castle holds historical importance, the overall experience felt underwhelming and overpriced. I would recommend considering other attractions in Tirana that offer a more comprehensive and cost-effective experience.

An interesting place, the castle isn't really a castle though! There are different restaurants and bars there so you can enjoy a meal or snack/gelato. Also I recommend the OLIVE OIL there, good price and good quality. There are multiple shops that sell it over there. Worth a visit.

What a beautiful space to walk around and discover shops and restaurants. We visited the shop that had many olive wood items where I purchased a small bowl for salt and a beautiful wood spoon. We also ate at the truffle restaurant across the way from the shop. I wanted to try everything because it sounded so delicious! I settled on the risotto, and we had the mushrooms and salad for appetizers.
