Very beautiful Chola architecture. Accurate parallel pillars of massive size. Spend time for art lovers - 3 hours. The Lord Shiva is one of the panchabootha linga -- here representing water. Huge human made stone water tanks can be seen (but no water now). Amman is Akhilandeshwari - the mandapam leading to Her temple is an amazing architecture. One straight line of 100+ stone pillars. One must visit in Srirangam.

It's also known as the Jambukeswarar Temple and was built over 1,800 years ago by Emperor Kocengannan Chola. The temple is located on the island of Srirangam, which is also home to the famous Ranganathaswamy temple. The temple is one of the 275 Paadal Petra Sthalams, where all four of the most revered Nayanmars (Saivite Saints) have sung hymns in glory of the Deity. The temple is considered the abode of goddess Akilandeswari, one of the forms of the goddess Parvati. The temple represents the element of water, or neer in Tamil. The temple is one of the five main Shiva temples in Tamil Nadu (Pancha Bhoota Stalam), which stands for the Mahbhta or five great elements.

The temple is less crowded in the early morning and just short distance from the center of Trichy. Inside the temple, a woman sells food like puliyodarai and appam to devotees.

Jambukeswer Temple is one of the five temples dedicated to Lord Shiva as the manifestation of the five elements. This temple represents the element of water, and is also known as the Jala Lingam. It is located near Srirangam, a town famous for its Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple, which is dedicated to Lord Vishnu. I visited Jambukeswer Temple on a sunny day in January. The temple complex is huge and has many smaller shrines and sculptures. The main attraction is the sanctum sanctorum, where the Shiva Lingam is partially submerged in water that comes from an underground spring. The entrance to the sanctum is low and narrow, and only a few people can enter at a time. I felt a sense of awe and devotion as I saw the Lingam surrounded by water. The temple also has a shrine for Goddess Akhilandeswari, who is the consort of Lord Shiva. She is worshipped as the goddess of wisdom and learning. There is a special ritual that takes place every day at noon, where a priest dressed as a woman performs a puja to a holy cow in front of the goddess. This symbolizes the surrender of the ego and the attainment of enlightenment. The temple is very peaceful and serene, and I enjoyed the architecture and the carvings on the pillars and walls. The temple is also home to some elephants and cows, which are considered sacred animals in Hinduism. I fed them some bananas and received their blessings. I spent about two hours in the temple and felt very refreshed and rejuvenated. I learned a lot about the history and significance of the temple and its deities. I would recommend anyone who is interested in spirituality and culture to visit Jambukeswer Temple near Srirangam.

One of the best place to visit in Trichy. The structural is magnificent. Appreciate the sculptures who must have gone through ardous task of making this one of the beautiful place of workshop. The campus is clean and we'll maintained.

JAMBUKESHWAR AKHILANDEESHWARI TEMPLE - TIRUVANAIKOVIL - TAMILNADU. Jambukeswarar Temple is a famous Shiva temple in Thiruvanaikaval near Trichy. The temple was built by Kocengannan (Kochenga Chola),one of the Early Chola, around 1,800 years ago. Thiruvanaikal is one of the five major Panchabhoota Sthalams (5 Elements of creation) representing the element of Water. The sanctum of Jambukeswara has an underground water spring & it is always wet. Parvathi (cursed by shiva) in the form of Akilandeswari found Jambu forest in Thiruvanaikoil to conduct her penance. She made a Lingam (Appu Lingam) out of water of river Cauvery (Ponni) under the Jambul or Jambu tree (Eugenia Jambolana, the rose-apple tree) and commenced her worship. Pleased with her devotion Siva taught her Siva Gnana. 'Malyavan' and 'Pushpadanta'. The Siva Ganas always quarreled with each other. 'Malyavan' cursed 'Pushpadanta' to become an elephant and the latter cursed the former to become a spider. The elephant and the spider came to Jambukeswaram and continued their worship of shiva. Daily the elephant immersed the lingam with water for ablutions & the spider constructed web over the Lingam to prevent dry leaves from dropping on it. The elephant tore the web and poured water to cleanse the lingam daily. The spider disliking this elephantine act became angry, crawled into the trunk and stung the elephant to death and was itself crushed in the trunk. Siva, in the form of Jambukeswara, gave both of them moksha. The elephant’s worship of Shiva here gave the place its name Thiru(Holy) Aanai(Elephant) Kaa or Kaadu(Forest) or became 'Thiruvanaikaval' and 'Thiruvanaikoil'. The spider was born as King Kochengan Chola (kotchengannan cholan meaning red-eyed king)( Red eyed for delay in birth, for the auspicious moment) in order to atone for his sin of killing the elephant. Remembering his enmity with the elephant in his previous birth, he built the entrance to the Siva Sannidhi(sanctorum) so small, that even a baby elephant cannot enter. The entrance to the sanctum of is only 4 foot high and 2.5 foot wide. After becoming the king, he built the temple for Siva and Goddess Akilandeswari in the name of Aanaikka (elephant protected) later it became to Thiruvanaikoil. There are five enclosures or praharams inside the temple. The fourth precinct contains a hall with 796 pillars and a small tank fed by perpetual springs. The sculptures and pillars are intrinsically carved across the temple. The sanctum has the smallest entrance possible to prevent an elephant entering it. The Mukha Mantapa, containing four-pillars and houses a bronze idol of Nandi. The deity is viewed through a stone window which has nine viewing apertures, believed to represent the Navagraha. Jambukeshwar and Akilandeshwari are installed opposite to each other & represent the Guru and Shishya relationship, as Shiva taught Parvathi Shiva Gnana here & hence there is no Thiru Kalyanam (marriage) conducted in this temple. Things to See : 1.Lord Jambulingeshwar ( Water Lingam). 2.Akilandeshwari ( Opp Shiva’s sanctum). 3. Double storied Theertham(Pond) & perennial spring. 4. Subshrines including Prasanna Ganapathy. 5.796 Pillared hall. 6. Bronze Nandi. 7.Painting of Shreechakra & Parvathi praying to shiva under the Jambu Tree. 8. Palli (Lizard) on the outer prahara. 9. Sculptures on pillar including Dattatreya,Vishnu,Bramha,Manikkavasagar,Narayani, Thillai kali, Nataraja,Mahalakshmi,Saraswathi,Menaka with a baby, Vishwamitra,Bhringu muni with 3 legs,Parvithi worshipping shiva under jambu tree,& many others including the sculpture of an unusual bird. 10 Zodiac signs on the roof above the dhwaja sthamba. 11.Yin & Yang symbols in dual, triple & quadruple nature. 12. Spider & Elephant worshipping shiva.Jambukeswarar Temple, Thiruvanaikaval is a famous Shiva temple in Tiruchirapalli district, in the state of Tamil Nadu, India.

One amongst Panchalingas in India. #Jambukeswer Temple is one of the five temples dedicated to Lord Shiva as the manifestation of the five elements. This temple represents the element of water, and is also known as the "Jala Lingam". Here, Lingam is surrounded by the water so name came as Jala Lingam. It is located near Srirangam, a town famous for its Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple, which is dedicated to Lord Vishnu. In this temple, we must visit Akhilandeswari, who consort of Lord Shiva. In this temple we see Cows and Elephants. These very good attractions to the temple. We can walk upto the temple from Srirangam railway station. Very less trains available from Tiruchirapalli to Srirangam. Or we can pick any private vehicle.

There is an elephant in this temple premises which is one of the most beautiful and graceful I have ever seen, mesmerising. Tieubanaikovil Jamukeshwara Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and also one of Pancha Bhootha Linga which is made of Water by Parvathi. You will also find Akilandeshwari (Parvathi) Sannidhi in the same campus. Darshan take time as one needs to bow down and visit Linga in a 4 feet small mandapam inside garbhagudi. Plan your visit accordingly. Very closer to Srirangam main temple, u can hire a auto.

Just divine!!! One of the panchabootha sthalams where the lingam resides on a bed of water. The sanctum Santorum is so small that only 10-15 people can enter at a time. But darshan is awesome and the priest explains stala purana and shows the water bed under linga, on request. Temple architecture speaks for itself. Makes us wonder about the people who were able to erect such fine pieces of art 1000 years back!!! Don't miss it, if you visit Trichy.

Most Powerful Divine place Sri Thiruvanaikoil or Thiruvanaikaval, of Trichy, holds great importance because of its famous Jambukeswarar Temple. The temple holds a sacred place in the hearts of the Shiva Devotees across the world. The temple is considered one among the five major Shiva Temples, regarded as Panchabhoota Sthala, representing elements of water. The construction of the temple is thought to be about 1800 years ago by Kochengon, one of the Early Cholas of the city. The temple worships Lord Shiva or Shiva Lingam in the form of Appu Lingam (water lingam). The attraction of the temple is the underground water stream in the sanctum of Lord Jambukeshwara with water coming out of it continuously. The temple also worships Goddess Parvati in the form of- Devi Akilandeswari Amman. People say many stories about the importance and the history of the place. Many regional stories are depicting the gratefulness of the god and his blessings upon his devotees. The architecture of the temple is complex, with 5 enclosures. Festivals- The temple commences Panguni Brahmmotsavam in the months of March-April and Aadi Pooram in the months of July-August every year. These festivals see thousands of Shiva devotees from across the country.

Being one of panchabhuta (water) temple and built by Kochenketcha chola king about 2500 years ago, this temple is yet another chola time marvel. Gigantic walls, intricate architecture and on top of all, motherly Akilandeswari and the Adiyogi Sambukeswarar grace this place with divine vibes. Throughout all these years, continuous presence of water in sanctum sanctoram (karuvarai) makes this place even more special !!

The temple was built around 11th to 12th century and built by Kocengannan, one of the Earlychola Kings. The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva. The temple consists of five concentric walls which are a marvel of the architectural heritage of India. In this temple Goddess Parvathi in the form of Sri Akilandeswari worshiped Lord Shiva in the Jambu forest (Thiruvanaikoil) as part of her penance. The temple priest performs Pooja for the Lord Siva in female attire. Thiru Kalyanam will not be performed here as Goddess appeared here in the form of a student while Lord Siva as Guru. Akhilandeswary Amman temple inside this premises is a must visit. It is said that Adisankaracharya added Ear Rings for the Goddess to bring Sowmya Roopa. One can pay attention to the ears of the idol while worshipping. Dont miss out on sweet prasad made of jaggery and while you come out after the darsan.

Temple elephant seen around Amman Santhi. Blessings given only if amount is given made commercial.Prasadam sold taste good.

One of the most interesting temples with fascinating structures in it. Definitely worth a visit and the spiritual aspect of this place intensifies as near as you get to the main Garbha Gudi. There’s wheelchair accessibility as well for this vast expanse of space. The pillars are all interesting when looked upon closer inspection.

Good place where you get complete divine feel. Best piece of architecture and well maintained temple. You need to go down to worship Lord shiva ( like inside a tunnel), where only 8 people are allowed at a time. Had a very good feel and loved this temple visit. Amman sannadhi was closed for alangaram around 11am and they said it will take half an hour. Since we had to go other temples, we left.

This is one of the Panch Tatva Sthalam dedicated for Water. Amazing architecture and equally well maintained. I have visited this place few times and I can feel the Spirituality and its Vibes in and around the temple. It's well connected by road from Chennai and couple of hours drive so far. Parking can also be managed with hardly any efforts. They offer Paid Prasadam as well to the devotees who wants to eat within the temple premises. Only thing what can be improved is to have a English Literature about the Temple and the overall significance of the God. Must visit place. I feel contented every time after getting blessing of the Lord Jambukeshwarar... Om Namah Shivay...

The Jambukeswarar Temple is about 1800 years old, situatedin Trichy, Tamilnadu. It's a wonderful temple, with a huge complex, spacious and beautiful. The main temple has about 800 pillars. Words cannot describe its beauty. Best part of the temple is that it's less crowded and one can peacefully have darshan and walk around. It would be nice to have a guide to visit the whole temple. As per tradition one must visit Goddess Akhilandeshwari first, then visit God Jambukeswarar.

During our recent trip to Tiruchi, We had the good opportunities to worship Lord Jambukeshwarar and Goddess Akhilandeswari at Thiruvanaikaval Temple. This temple is associated with one of the five elements water. The base of the lingam is always in water, even during peak Summer there is dampness associated with the Vasthram around the lingam. Goddess Akhilandeswari a powerful deity who fulfills all the wishes of the devotees. The much discussed figure of Shiva attached to Bhrama and Vishnu at a particular angle , depicted on one of the pillars is seen as a water molecule similar to its bond angle. The elephant in the temple is called Akhila. Temple located at a distance of 2.7 Kms from Srirangam. Timings 6 am to 1 pm and 3 pm to 8 pm , Monday to Thursday. 6 am to 8?pm on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Special ticket of Rs 10 and Rs25 for darshan of the Jambukeshwarar. Must visit temple when on a pilgrimage to Tiruchi

The Chola's Masterpiece: Building Beyond Belief !! As I sit in the temple, marveling at the walls and sculptures, my mind drifts to the Chola period. I can't help but wonder about the incredible craftsmanship and dedication of the Cholas who built this place. Imagining them here at that time, creating these intricate details, is truly fascinating. The Thiruvanaikovil Arulmigu Jambukeswarar Akilandeswari temple is an exquisite and spiritually vibrant site located in Thiruvanaikoil, Tamil Nadu, India. As one of the Pancha Bhoota Stalas dedicated to Lord Shiva, this temple holds immense historical, architectural, and religious significance. Upon entering the temple complex, one is greeted by its stunning architecture adorned with intricate carvings and sculptures. The sprawling temple premises house various halls, shrines, and intricately designed corridors that showcase the rich cultural heritage of the region. The sanctum sanctorum of the temple is dedicated to Lord Jambukeswarar, representing the element of water, while the goddess Akilandeswari's shrine symbolizes the element of earth. This unique aspect of the temple, honoring the five elements of nature, adds a profound layer of spirituality to the experience. I was drawn not only by the architectural beauty but also by the spiritual aura that envelops the temple. The rhythmic chants, the fragrance of incense, and the mesmerizing rituals create an atmosphere that facilitates deep introspection and reverence. The temple's festival calendar is vibrant and lively, with numerous celebrations and rituals throughout the year. The annual Panguni Brahmmotsavam and Aadi Pooram festivals are especially significant, attracting devotees from far and wide to participate in the festivities and seek the blessings of the deities. What makes the Thiruvanaikovil temple truly special is its amalgamation of history, spirituality, and architectural grandeur. Whether one seeks solace, cultural enrichment, or simply marvels at the craftsmanship of ancient artisans, this temple stands as a testament to the rich heritage of India and its deep-rooted religious traditions. NOTE: 1) The temple ceremonies start at 6:00 am every morning. Pantuality matters here. 2) Both Lord Shiva and Agilandeshwari are worshipped at the same time, and during this ritual, the sanctum doors are closed. 3) Special tickets, costing around 100 rupees, offer a more in-depth experience, and it's best not to pay more than that. 4) One of the temple's special traditions is an elephant carrying water for the daily ceremony. This ritual has been happening for generations, adding a timeless charm to the temple's customs. 5) Maha Varahi Amman rituals are also famous here.

THIRUVANAIKAVAL is one of the 5 major Shiva Temples of Tamil Nadu (Panchabhoota Sthalams - representing the five great elements). This temple represents the element of Water. The sanctum of Jambukeswara has an underground water stream and in spite of pumping water out, it is always filled with water. It is one of the 275 Paadal Petra Sthalams, where all the four most revered Nayanars (Saivite Saints) have sung glories of the deity in this temple. The temple's construction dates back to 2nd Century CE by Kochenga Chola and later renovated by Pandya, Hoysala, Nayak Kings. There are lot of inscriptions from various Chola kings of 11th - 12th century indicating grants to the temple. The Siva linga here is a syambu (natural) linga. Its as big as an ant hill. Worshippers have to bent low to enter and offer prayers. Only Hindus are allowed. The afternoon pooja was beautiful. The priest was dressed as a lady to perform the rituals. The temple elephant is named Akila after the goddess Akilandeswary.

One of the grandest and beautiful Shiva temples in the country, representing one of the pancha boothas - water. The temple is located in Thiruvanaikaval near Srirangam ( famous for Sri Ranganatha Swamy temple) between two rivers - Kaveri and Kollidam. There are three grand pragarams. The Lord Shiva Linga is in a small sanctum below ground level with only a narrow path both for entry and exit. Water is continuously emerging from the base of inner sanctum. Devi Shri Akilandeswari Amman in a separate sannidhi. The temple has well maintained nandavanam inside. Lot of peacocks around.

Beautiful architecture. We saw 2 big elephants inside. This is one of the Panch Bhoota temple, Water element. The main garbha graha is very dark, small & stuffy. There is a small size Linga inside.
