UNBIASED REVIEW: THAYUMANA SWAMY TEMPLE.... THAYUMANA = THAYUM + AANA ..(god transformed into mother) why the name?? how lord shiva helps a pregnant woman since her original mother could not visit her. lord shiva takes the role of her mother magically and help in her at delivery and takes care of her child untill her original mother comes to visit is the historical background .. 😎LETS know practical things to visit the temple 1) time to visit temple : 6 to 8 a. m or even 4:30 to 7:30 p. m.... remeber temple closes by 7:30 p. m 2) most important if you are new to trichy city... it's wise to park your car in the main road itself and take auto since the road will go narrower as you near the temple, hence you can avoid damage to car since it's overcrowded by bikes as you near the temple😏 3) use clothes that are comfortable and ventilated since the air ventilation is limited inside temple and you will be sweating a lot & handkerchief will come to rescue🤔 4) most of all, temple is situated at height of 230 steps to walk UPHILL, hence pregnant female wish to visit temple... it's hard to climb after 3 months of conception - since it's 230 steps.. so plan accordingly🤗 5) car parking issue is there,,, you can't carry flowers up there for dharsan... slipper counter needs to be improved.. above all the minor issues there, the divine nature and beauty of temple is unrivalled... birds eye view of trichy is added advantage there... this is my lengthiest Google review ever,,, just to inform others, so they can plan well ahead... # EXPERIENCE MAY VARY PERSON TO PERSON & TIME TO TIME

This temple is situated at Malaikottai, halfway up the Rockfort complex about a km walk from the Chatiram bus stand in Tiruchirapalli. The literature available in and around the temple premises, dates the temple back to the 6th century. Many dynasties were involved in bringing the temple, to its present size, form and importance. The presiding deity is Lord Shiva as Thayumanavar in the form of a lingam and Goddess Parvati. Legend has it that a pregnant woman, an ardent devotee of Lord Shiva, nearing labor, requested her mother to come over. The mother was unable to visit due to flooding of the Cauvery river. As delivery time came closer, in desperation, the lady prayed to Lord Shiva. Shiva, struck by his devotee's devotion, manifested himself in the form of her mother and aided with her smooth delivery. Thus he is worshipped as THAYUMANASWAMY - the one who played a mother's role One has to pass through bylanes steeped in history and climb quite a few steps to reach the temple. The stonework inside is magnificent, and the view from the top unforgettable.

Magnificent view! In the Rockfort temple complex, there are three shrines, two of which are dedicated to Lord Ganesha; one is at the foot of the temple, and the other is at the top, with the Thayumanavar Temple located in the middle. Among the three temples, the Thayumanavar temple is the largest. Lord Shiva as a lingam is worshipped at the Thayumanavar Temple as Thayumanavar, Mathrubootheshwar, Thayumaneswarar, or Sevvanthi Nathar. Mother is known as Mattuvar Kuzhali or Sugandha Kundalambikai. Located on a 273-foot-high monolith dating back 3500 billion years, the Rockfort consists of rock-carved cave temples atop a set of monolithic rocks. After the Thanjavur temple, this Siva Lingam is the second largest.

Situated more than halfway mark to the Uchipillayar temple in the Rockfort, at the left side. The temple is big, considering it being located on the hills. Open between 6 am to 12 pm and 4 pm to 8 pm. Need to climb approximately 300 steep steps to reach the temple. When I first visited the temple, I was very much astonished to see the grandeur of the Thayumanvar statue and had a very great vibration. Separate temple for Martyvarakuzhalai ammai. Still could recall the divine feeling from the first visit. The second time could not be visited as the temple was closed during noon time and it was opened only during the evening. The third time visit was an early morning visit, and I sat there for more than an hour just seeing the Lord for more time. Observed that most of the people visit in a tourist mindset and just pray and quickly go. But this is not the temple to just leave but to stay and pray. Remember, people bring full stem full of bananas and milk for placing before God. Whenever we visit Trichy, I will try to visit this temple for peacefulness and sort of astonishment feel. Everyone should visit to feel the divine experience.

Temple is at the heart of Tiruchirapalli and served as a fort earlier. The temple is on a small hill, pray to Manicka Vinayagar first and then climb 200+ steps to reach the temple. Lord Shiva was originally known as Sevvandhi nathar but later came to be popularly reffered as Thayumanavar (lord who became mother) as he took the form of a female devotee's mother and nursed her during her child delivered. The main diety (Linga) is the fourth biggest in Tamil Nadu. Ambal is known as Mattuvaarkuzhali. The temple is one of the 276 padal petra sthalams and is sanctified by the hymns of saint Manickavasagar and Thayumanavar. There are beautifull and noteworthy sculptures. Another 200+ steps from this temple will lead to the very famous Uchchi pillaiyar (Ganesha) temple.

Temple is good and GOD id great but roads are very narrow. My driver just just touched a two Wheeler and one head light of the 2 wheeler damaged. That is all.. that fellow chased us.. Created issue on the road though we said we will appropriately compensate him. He was demanding more or else he will take us to police station and his uncle is trichy SP.. Some nonsense.. We were getting late to our flight.. At last we gave him money to purchase alcohol then he left. Such instance portray people staying at that place badly to others. Especially places of tourism and police also should not encourage such people though they are thier relatives

There is another temple named Thayumanaswami Temple around half-way of the stair-path towards the Rockfort Temple. This temple seems to be made by cutting a cave bigger. The Arulmigu Uchi Pillaiyar Temple, popularly known as the Rockfort temple too, is situated atop a hillock. It can be seen from far during night-time, as there were good colourful illumination around the hillock. From the lowest point to the top-- there were 418 steps. One needs to climb around 300 steps to reach the view point. Till the viewpoint, the entire stairpath is through the cave, so there is no direct sunlight/ heat to be bohred of. After around 300 steps, the stair-path emerges from the cave into open, ad at that point, on left side, there is the "Pallavar Upper rockcut Caves", built during the Pallava dynasty. Sadly, hat portion seemed to be permanently locked. The view from the vewpoint and from the temple is really mesmerizing. One can see the bridges on river Kaveri, the Gopurams of the Ranganathaswamy Temple etc. from the viewpoint.

It is located in the city of Trichirapalli on the banks of river Kaveri,Tamilnadu,India. It is constructed on rock. There are two Hindu temples inside, the Uchchipillaiyar and the Thayumanavar temples. Other local tourist attractions include famous Pallava -era Ganesh temple and the Madurai-nayak era fort. The fort complex has witnessed fierce battles between the Madurai Nayakas and Adil Shahi dynasty of Bijapur  Carnatic region and Maratha Imperial forces. The fort played an important part during the Carnatic Wars, helping lay the foundations of the British Empire in India. Rockfort is the most prominent landmark of the city and surrounded by lot of shopping complex.

Beautiful rock temple in the famous rock fort spot of Trichy. One has to climb around 200 steps to reach to the top where Ucchi Pillayar temple is located. Shiva is Thayumanavar (Maatrubhooteshwar) and Ambal is sugantagujambal. It is believed that the Lord takes care of just born as its Mother and devotees pray for smooth delivery and tie banana bunches with cow's milk for abhishekam as Thanksgiving worship. These Pooja items are available at the basement and the shopkeepers themselves arrange bringing to the temple, as the steps are very steep and occasional visitors would find it difficult to carry weight whole climbing up. Temple architecture is impressive with big dwarapalakas, paintings, etc.Navagraha sannithi is quite different here. Shiva linga us gigantic. A must visit temple while in Trichy. Cars can traverse thro very narrow lanes around the rock and reach upto the foothill.

This is 6th century historical temple. Very rare monuments, statue. This temple made inside a big cage of mountain. Unforgettable experience. Photos, videos restricted for most of the places. There are many temples inside which is not visible from outside. From outside you can just see one temple at the top. But it is just glimpse. Real mysterious temples once you start walking in stairs

Nice Sivan Temple. Temple had very odd timings during my visit. They closed by Evening 7.30 P.M. May be due to corona restrictions. Check accordingly. Walkable distance from Chatram bus stand. Roads are very narrow. Recommend to walk directly to temple instead of coming by vehicle.

Uchi Pillaiyar temple is located on the rock fort hill. Need to climb around 500 steps to visit the pillaiyar temple. Steps are very high initially and later it is bit slippery. We have Thayumanavar temple and amman temple on the way. No specific parking place and vehicles to be parked on the roadside. Roads leading to the temple is very narrow.
