Murugan temple with six faces. There are steep 200+ steps to reach the temple. We can see peacocks and monkeys. We can go by car near the temple. We can see the full view of the landscape. Located 29 kms from Trichy Central Bus Stand and 15 kms from Manapparai Bus Stand. 95 kms from Madurai M. G. R Bus Terminal. From the Madurai to Trichy National Highway temple is more visible.

Located 28km from trichy enroute madurai NH, on a small rocky hill top with 207 steps leading to temple. New road along hillside is built for two wheeler and four wheeler to reach the temple site. Praised by Saint Arunagirinathar ,the main deity is lord murugan with six faces and six pairs of hands seated on a peacock facing east. The temple complex is well maintained and neat. Less crowded during weekdays and ideal for peaceful darshan with amazing evening sunset.

Very wonderful temple on top of a hillock. Makes everyone wonder how such large rocks could be assembled to form a big base for the temple of Lord MURUGAN/SUBRAMANYA SWAMY to be constructed on top of the base on such a uneven Rocky hillock with so many God's, pillars and slabs of such long spans(4 to 9m long) sculpted. Tamil civilization is full of many unknown secrets/mysteries that they have been not taught, and made to forget conveniently by the political lineages since 50's all thru mid 60's till even today. It's time for the TN government to bring the greatness of their culture, and local citizenry to bring out the same to public so that more people come to visit and spread the greatness of Bhaarath in total and Tamil civilization in particular.

A beautiful hill temple for Lord Arulmigu Balasubramania Swamy. Devotees has to climb up with nearly 400 to 500 stairs. Also you can reach top of the temple by car with awesome hairpin bend drive. How ever you have to climb up with atleast 50 steps. Opening timings morning 7am to closing time at 8pm sharp. At 8pm there is special palli ara pooja daily and prasadham will be distributed daily. A beautiful selfie point is also available.

Viralimalai Murugan Temple is located in Viralimalai about 28 kms from Trichy. Though the presiding deity is Shiva, the Temple is known for Murugan shrine. The Temple is 1200 years old built lt by Cholas. Arunagirinathar, a Tamil poet, visited Vayalur and sung praises about Murugan in 16 songs in Thirupugal. Here cigar is offered along with neivedhyam to Murugan, since cigar is considered as a symbol of love and removing the suffering of others. The temple is located on a small hill. Now road is available to reach the hill top by four wheelers. The Temple is known for peacocks that are found in plenty. Rishis Narafadha and Kashyapa offered prayer to Murugan and for getting their sins propitiated. On the way to the hill top, we find Idumban Sannithi. The Temple is quite calm and one can feel the Vibrations. Beware of monkeys on the way to the Temple.

At a distance of 750 m from Viralimalai Bus Stand, 28 km from Trichy and 43 km from Pudukkottai, Viralimalai Murugan Temple is one of the famous Hindu temples dedicated to Lord Murugan, also known as Subrahmanya located in the town of Viralimalai in Pudukkottai District. Built by Aditya Chola in 9th century, this temple is located in the heart of the Viralimalai town. The temple lies on the Viralimalai hill, hence the town takes the name of the hill. This hill is small and rocky and there are 207 steps to reach the temple. On the way to the top, there are beautiful mandapas for devotees to rest. The surroundings of this temple is filled with thick vegetation. This temple is specially known for the peacocks that are found in plenty. Within the premises of the temple, there is a statue of Kashyapa and Narada Muni along with several sculptures of Arumugan and Arunagirinathar on its pillars. At the foot of the hills the water tank called Saravana Poigai. On the eastern side there is a shrine for the goddess Maikannudaiyal. It is customary to worship this goddess before climbing up the hill. On the way to the hill there is a small cave temple for Meenakshi Sundreshwarar and a Mandapam called Sandana Kottam at the end of the steps. The main idol Lord Murugan inside the sanctum sanctorum is impressive. The Lord is in the form of Arulmugan, six-faced and with twelve hands seated elegantly on the peacock facing east. The divine consorts Valli and Devayani stand on either side. The devotees can see the three faces at the back in the mirror while the other three can be viewed directly. Cigar made of sandal paste is a unique offering to the lord at this temple. According to history, during the reign of Ramachandra Thondaiman of Pudukottai the Lord is believed to have appeared in his dream and requested the offering of cigars for the Kalasandhi and Sayaratchai puja. The king is said to have been cured of his diseases after the offer of cigars to the Lord according to history. There are several caves in which saints and yogis have performed penance. Taippucam, Pankuni Uttiram, Kanda Sasthi and Adikrittikai are the main festivals celebrated in this temple. Timings: 6 AM to 11 AM and 5 PM to 8 PM

Beautiful temple to see murugar with six faces. Around 200 steps to climb but Lift is being constructed, maybe it will be finished within a year which covers almost all the steps, although we have to take some 10 to 12 steps from the lift area(info for old people who can't climb) Halfway through the steps car parking is available.. From there we have to walk around 100 steps. Fyi: we visited on last week of Dec 2023

After a long time, we went to Viralimalai Murugan temple. Earlier, there was no road in this small hill. Now there is fantastic road, which reaches upto temple entrance. Parking place also there for about 15 cars. Temple is very neat , calm. Usually less crowded. Many monkey's are threatening people with holding banana or coconut. Evening six PM, we can see so many Peacocks near temple. Very nice place to visit with family.

The temple was so good, neatly maintained. Was pleasantly silent. The place have too much of monkey's. Which we need to be aware of before going. Don't keep fruits and other eatables in open, total steps is less than 200, also there is an road to reach the temple, which is you should step on only 10 steps. But the thing is there is no proper boards are sign boards mentioning the route for temple.

Viralimalai is on the bus route between Madurai and Tiruchy.Viralimalai temple is situated in the heart of the town of Viralimalai. Hence the town takes the name of the hill. The hill is small and rocky. From the foot of the hill a beautiful flight of steps take us to the top. These footsteps are engraved on the rock and are 207 in number. In between there are beautiful mandapams for devotees to rest. There are thick woody orchards on the hill and peacocks abound in these orchards. Great saints and yogis are said to have lived in the form of Kura trees and worshipped Lord Muruga and hence the name Viralimalai derived from the Tamil word Viravi. This temple is specially known for the peacocks that are found in plenty. Cigar is a unique offering similar to the sandal paste offered to Lord Dandayudhapani during Arthajama puja in Palani. During the reign of Ramachandra Thondaiman of Pudukottai the Lord is believed to have appeared in his dream and requested the offering of cigars for the Kalasandhi and Sayaratchai puja. The king is said to have been cured of his diseases after the offer of cigars to the Lord according to history. We also find a number of caves in which saints and yogis have performed penance. This is a place where the Lord blesses devotees with the power to control the indriyas or senses. Rishis Narada and Kashyapa offered prayer to Lord Subrahmanya for getting their sins propitiated. The mute Sivachariyar obtained the power of speech after worshipping Lord Murugan here. These and many more are the marvels of this temple. We find the statue of Kashyapa Muni and Narada Muni in the hill temple along with sculptures of Arundhati and Vashishta. We also find the sculpture of Arumugan and Arunagirinathar on the pillars found on the way to the temple. The temple is located on top of the hill and can be seen from a great distance. A beautiful flight of steps along with mandapams for devotees to rest, take us to the top of the hill. At the foot of the hills the water tank called Saravana Poigai is located on southern side. On the eastern side there is a Srine for the goddess Maikannudaiyal. It is customary to worship this goddess before climbing up the hill. On the way to the hill top we find the Idumban Sannidhi a small cave Srine for Meenakshi Sundareshwar and a mandapam called Sandana Kottam at the end of the flight of steps. Adjacent to the Sandana Kottam Mandapam we find the Navaratri and Shanmuga Moorty Mandapam. Next to the Navaratri Mandapam we find the south-facing Raja Gopuram. In the Shanmuga Moorthy Mandapam of this temple with a single prahara the utsavamoorthy gives darshan together with devas. In the western part of the prahara we find the Srines of Vinayagar, Dakshina Moorthy, Agasthiyar and Arunagirinathar and in the northern side we find the Srine of Chandikeshwarar and Bhairavar. Sages and saints were in the form of Kura trees and worshipped the Lord of Viralimalai. Hence this place was called Viravi Malai which later became Viralimalai. The poet Saint Arunagirinathar has mentioned in his songs about saints staying and worshipping Lord Muruga in this hill temple. When the temple and its allied properties were acquired by Vadi Lakkaiya Naicker, the temple was renovated and built by their successors and the descendants of Marungapuriyar. In the 18th century the temple was under the control of Pudukottai Thondaiman. In the 18th and 19th century during the Karnataka war Viralimalai Tiruchirapalli was a military area. The tourist Bungalow here was built in 1822 for the army chiefs to halt and rest. The Palayamkarar's used to offer cigar to the Lord

It’s a quick detour from the Madurai Trichy highway, just about five mins. Good time to go is in the evening. Not much crowded and you can get a lot of darshan time if you are lucky. There is a special ticket which is a good option if you want to get a closer view and also skip the queue. Had a very blissful experience.

Very serene temple is rural localities of Trichy. Yet to another beautiful temple of Lord Murugan on a hillock. One can prefer the walk up 250+ steps; or drive to 2/3rd of the distance and climb the last 70-80 steps. We visited in the early morning and had a great dharshan.

Oldest temple in viralimalai. In temple they claim temple is more than 1500 years old. Special in this temple is there are 6 faces in lord Murugan statue, during Pooja you can see it. In this temple Lord Murugan given astama sitthu to arunagirinathar. Temple was not built when arunagirinathar visited here. Chola built this temple. Temple is situated in small mountain, car can go upto half mountain, from there you have to go by steps less than 30.

Arunagirinathar was a 15th-century Tamil poet born in Tiruvannamalai. He spent his early years as a rioter and seducer of women. After ruining his health, he tried to commit suicide by throwing himself from the northern tower of Annamalaiyar Temple, but was saved by the grace of god Murugan. He became a staunch devotee and composed Tamil hymns glorifying Murugan, the most notable being Thirupugazh. Arunagirinathar visited various Murugan temples and on his way back to Tiruvannamalai, visited Viralimalai and sung praises about Murugan.[

Awesome temple. Couldn't visit the main deity due to covid restrictions on weekends. It has less than around 100 steps to climb the mountain. Also one can drive till the hilltop. History says Arunagirinathar was blessed with astma sidhi by Lord Murugan at this temple.

Fist visited on New year day and full crowded and it would have managed the crow well. Nice temple and had good dharshan on New year day. Steps are little deep and yanai road/pathai is very easy to claim the temple. Car & bike road is to much traffic and no one is there to manage.
