What can you say about this great beautiful church. It's a must see. You have a poison Jesus that people come to prey to help them with problems in the past. You have a sitting Jesus that people used to bring their offerings to the church. The organ music playing at certain times. The beautiful gold and detailed walls and holy place of worship. A must see while visiting Mexico City!

It is nice, but I felt the atmosphere was ruined by the big TV screens about COVID-19. We are all aware and there are guards inside to ensure nobody is breaking the rules. There is a side area that costs an extra few pesos and there is a guide to explain what you're looking at (in Spanish) and I would make sure to see that as well. Very clean and quiet. Everyone is respectful. Maybe I have just be to too many cathedrals just like this in other cities to be overly impressed. It wasn't bad or unimpressive by any means. I just wasn't blown away by anything in particular. It is certainly worth a look in if you're in the area. I think if you want the most out of it and are really interested in the art/history, hire one of the guides outside. We didn't do that. It only took us about 15-20 minutes to walk though.

Plenty of good small rustic hotels located in the historic district. They don't have many amenities but the experience is priceless and there all within walking distance of the church. Need to be careful with some of the roof top restaurants. This time they were charging 100 pesos goes to go up per person. The plaza has plenty of vendors and Aztec dancers.

Probably the most famous and beautiful site in the heart of Mexico City. It is a stunning piece of architecture to walk around and experience from the outside but entry is free and you must also experience it from the inside. There is a stunning atmosphere and a site that cannot be missed.

One of my favorite things to do on trips through Mexico is to visit the churches and cathedrals. This cathedral is the most spectacular I have experienced in México, and I have visited 22 of the 32 states. Admission is free, however donations of any amount are greatly appreciated (and well deserved in my opinion). You will be amazed by the architecture, design, art work, and the general ambiance. A must see de anyone visiting this part of the city.

This a very beautiful church, looking into the details it needs a lot of restoration-renovation. On our visit a scaffold was putting in place outside, hopefully they will start to work to taking care this important icon in CDMX.

Very nice cathedral, big, always full of people. Worth a. Visit. Surrounded by lots of of shops, bars and restaurants. Worth a pic the nearby square with the Mexican flag. In the square there are the stops of all the tourist buses .

Beautiful cathedral! The outside is beautiful and the inside even more so. You can take pictures inside without a problem and can also pay $100 pesos to take the subterranean tour to see the crypt of the first archbishop of Mexico. Beautiful details everywhere and many parts made of gold. Visually impressive.

Whether your religious or not this place should still be a part of your visit to Mexico City DF. It's truly part of the basic culture and roots of these people. The history and grounds are extremely interesting. The church is moving and is tracked by a pendulum sphere from the main rotunda

It's a pretty beautiful cathedral, huge, and very peaceful. There was a ceremony going on which gave our visit a very interesting feeling. The building itself is not super well kept. There's not many people crowded outside or inside. If your in the area definitely should go inside. I'd spend about 15 minutes there.

(Translated by Google) Historic site that cannot be missed on a visit to CDMX, inside there are several altarpieces dedicated to characters from Catholic history, there is also the Chair where Iturbide was crowned and his remains as well. In the lower part there are crypts for civil use and there is also the Crypt of the Archbishops where the remains of the Archbishops who have been in the cathedral rest. With special permits you can also go down to the area where the piles that maintain the level of the building are and where you can also see some remains of the Templo Mayor.

Amazing building, the exterior is Gothic-esque and the interior is a lovely combination of styles with a tendency towards the Baroque. I unfortunately didn’t have the opportunity to attend Mass here, but the space was quiet and prayerful.

This is the largest catholic church in the Americas. It is singularly impressive due to its sheer size. The entry is free and you may wonder about the church except in the main nave where the faithful do pray and celebrate mass. There are several interesting chapels and you may climb to the roof to admire the Zocalo from its vantage point. If you look carefully you will notice that the church is in need of some repairs as the stucco work is coming off in places and cracking in others. Interesting tradition is that the church bells will start ringing 15 minutes before mass, at noon for instance, and they will ring for the entire 15 minutes until noon, to let the believers know to come and pray.

Magnificent cathedral, very large in scale and richly steeped in history. Many luminaries and national heroes of Mexico were buried there, however most of the remains were transferred to other locations with the exception of the first Mexican emperor Agustín de Iturbide (1783-1824). The cathedral is also a home to two largest organs in America. To get inside the section housing the organs there is a nominal fee of $40 (pesos) per person. The photography is not allowed during mass.

I never got a good look at the cathedral because I was always driving past it, I never walked at the Zócalo. A few days ago, I finally did it and even got close to the cathedral. I was impressed with the intricate details and even walked inside to see a lot more. Here's the history of the cathedral, the Spanish built a church on top of the spot Aztecs considered sacred soon after the Aztec Empire fell to the Spanish in 1325. Construction of the grandiose cathedral began in 1573 using the stones from the nearby Great Pyramid of Tenochtitlán and was built around the original church, eventually replacing it. Upon closer look at the exterior, you can see how intricate the details are. The interior was equally rewarding with ornate decorations everywhere.

There was quite a bit of construction going on. The building was build on top of ancient Tenochtitlan buildings but have been sinking into the stilt. A lot of engineering going on to prevent the building from toppling over. The cathedral was built in sections from 1573 to 1813[3] around the original church that was constructed soon after the Spanish conquest of Tenochtitlan, eventually replacing it entirely. Spanish architect Claudio de Arciniega planned the construction, drawing inspiration from Gothic cathedrals in Spain. One can spend hours roaming in the cathedral and appreciating the exquisite work. Also felt a little sad about all history the Spaniards destroyed to build their own.

Wonderful to visit. Lots of history. It is highly recommended to do the bell tower tour (only offered on certain days and times so plan ahead). They now offer a tour of the crypts too. The outside beyond the gates is very crowded and bustling, but inside the iron fence you have plenty of space for pictures. During main mass, you won't be able to see the main altar, so check mass schedule.

This place is a must if you are in Mexico City's downtown. So much history, art and beautiful architecture to witness. You can pay 10 pesos for extra attractions inside, they are worth it, as their beauty is mesmerizing. They have lots of extra safety measures during the pandemic, which makes it a safe place to visit.

Massive cathedral in the heart of Mexico City. I was lucky enough to check out on a Sunday during mass- even got blessed by priest as I was site seeing. Not as ornate or gaudy as the European cathedrals, but definitely worth a stop. It really wasn’t busy with tourists - so a quick in and out.

The facade of this church has a Gothic feel to it that reminds me a lot of European architecture. It is very spacious inside and it is hard to believe that the church stands where the Aztec capital, Tenochtitlan, once stood.

An absolute UNIT of a cathedral. Supposedly the biggest and oldest in Latin America, you have to see it to believe it. It's one of those places where you can't wrap your mind regarding how they did it and how it resulted in something so beautiful They have guides who tell you a lot of cool details about the different places of the church and you can even go underground. Highly recommended, as this place has A LOT of history. It's money well spend

The main attraction at Zócalo. It’s an old cathedral, probably the oldest in the American continent. Spanish people started to build this one as soon as they conquered the land, on top of the temple mayor of pre Hispanic mesoamerican civilisation. The cathedral is huge, and has enormous historical importance. It was weekday morning, and we took our time to slowly explore. It was moderately crowded. They regularly conduct mass here, and it has a great cash-only gift shop. This is one of the main touristy place in Zócalo. However, a lot of locals/ spirituals also stop by the place. The cathedral is very beautiful and huge. A must visit if you are in the Mexico City.

Impressive Cathedral in the beautiful Zocalo square. It took 250 years to build it. That’s why the Cathedral integrates several architectural styles in its design, including the Gothic, Baroque, Neoclassical. The interior is also lavish and impressive, especially the two organs which are the largest in the Americas. The entrance is free, there is only a small fee for the organs. It’s definitely worth seeing it.

The sheer madness of the Spaniards tearing down the Aztec temple to build their own is revealed in this complex of buildings...the cathedral is nice if you are into that sort of thing...the baclsory is what is worth the trip!

You must start your tour of the city with visit to this cathedral. The metropolitan cathedral is one of the most important temples in America, its majestic proportions make it a masterpiece. It frames the north side of the Zócalo Capitalino and is the most representative monument of the Historic Center of Mexico City. The prolonged construction from 1573 to 1813 is a compendium of architectural styles that predominated successively in the New Hispanic era. Mexico 🇲🇽 city

This is a must for any visit to CDMX, easy access by Metro or even by walking. The zócalo itself, probably one of the largest plazas in the world, is also worth visiting as well as the palacio de gobierno, the Aztecs ruins, the very many gold and silver jewelry shops. Not to mention a large number of restaurants to taste the local cuisine. The works by Diego Rivero at the Palacio de Gobierno and at the Secretary of Education, a couple of blocks away from the zócalo, are a must as well.

The Cathedral can be admired from many points of view. They began to build it in the middle of the second half of the 16th century (1570 and something) and finished in the second decade of 1800. Architecturally it is a jewel, since having been built for approximately 250 years many architectural styles are integrated into it: Gothic, Baroque, Churrigueresque, Neoclassical, among others. Absolutely breathtaking cathedral. From the intricate sculpting on the outside, to the opulent interior, this cathedral rivals those in Europe. I believe this is still a functioning cathedral for worshipers, so you do so people going in and out and attending mass here. Absolutely stunning building that is worth visit! If you only visit one place in Mexico City, this is it! Note: Visited prior to COVID, so things may be different.

Im not Catholic, and don't understand putting so much money in to a church and the deceased clergy, but....the craftsmanship that went in to it is amazing. Took a tour of the underground, my Spanish is OK, but the tour guide spoke faster than my brain could process. If in the area, worth the trip.

Open during Covid as of March 5th for mass and tourists. The cathedral is stunning inside and out. It's a perfect spot to observe the sinking of the city. Mexico City is slowly sinking and older structures like the cathedral are a perfect place to see this. Walk in through the main entrance and observe the floor sloping as you walk towards the lectern and crucifix.

This place is AMAZING! I've visited cathedrals all over the world, and this is only one of a few that made me say "Wow!" out loud. No charge for admission. There are crypts, but they only allow nonfamily members to visit during short periods of time. I'm not religious, but I think this is one that would be interesting to visit during a Mass. The music that was playing while I visited was impressive.

The oldest and largest Cathedral in Middleamerika. Seat of the Bishop. A absolut impressive place in the middle of the city. Enjoy the Zocalo, the mainsquare, with the Indians in traditionell outfits or have a drink and watch all the live around.

This is certainly a handsome structure, yet I found it far less inspiring than many other churches, temples and shrines I’ve visited elsewhere in Latin America. Nonetheless, I should think well worth a visit while in the general are.

You gotta check this cathedral out when you’re in the area. It’s the best looking one I’ve seen in North America. It’s not that majestic on the inside compared to the ones in Spain but it’s still cool nonetheless

  • 5/5 Robert C. 1 year ago on Google
The largest catholic church in the Americas is singularly impressive due to its sheer size. The entry is free and you may wander about the church except in the main nave where the faithful do pray and celebrate mass. There are several interesting chapels and you may climb to the roof to admire the Zocalo from its vantage point. If you look carefully you will notice that the church is in the need of some repairs as the stucco work is coming off in places and cracking in others. Interesting tradition is that the church bells will start ringing 15 minutes before mass, at noon for instance, and they will ring for the entire 15 minutes until noon, to let the believers know to come and pray.

The Cathedral is currently in maintainable. To enter you have to use the left sided door. The building is unique. Given the slow sinking of the city and the yearly earthquakes I some times wonder how this building is still standing…

  • 4/5 Patrick S C. 1 year ago on Google
The local indigenous were celebrating traditional dance and smudging outside the front entrance of this elaborate ornate church. The sunken city and its ruins are in this immediate area.

A nice cathedral to see in Zocalo area in Mexico City. The architecture, the huge organ and what about the religious art. Please be quiet and have respect for people who believe. Don't forget to remove your hat or baseball cap while entering this building.

If you are visiting CDMX Ciudad de México, this is a beautiful church to visit. The Metropolitan Cathedral is in El Zocalo (Plaza Constitución), no admission required but a donation is well deserved; the church is huge, they have many paintings, sculptures, and hand made crafts works which are really impressive. Even if you are not Catholic, this is a very interesting place to visit and if you are religious, the catedral should be in your bucket list. 100% recommended 👍
