Second stop on our trip from VA to Newark for hockey game on Saturday. Another old-school place that has been on my goal list for a long time. The place is in a very urban area, tough to find street parking, I would suggest the public parking lot at the SE corner at intersection of Elizabeth Ave. & S.Reid St. It is really just a window service place, not a restaurant of any kind. But that is not a knock, it is the vintage charm that makes it a great place to try. In addition, the Italian style hot dogs in pizza bread, are fantastic. The sandwich is really sort of stuffed pizza bread pita, as seen in photo. Order with everything, meaning onions , peppers & potatoes. The amount of potatoes included in the sandwich is over-whelming. I wouldn’t order a separate cup of potatoes. It’s just too much food! It can be messy, take or bring plenty of napkins. Another suggestion- bring your own paper plates and plastic cutlery! The sandwich is wrapped in foil and the only utensil is a little wooden fork-spear, like the ones at Nathan’s. But the potato slices at Tommy’s are so huge, the wood fork-spear can’t handle the weight. All that said the sandwich is awesome, great grilled hot dogs and all the toppings provide nice depth of flavors. A must visit, if your hungry, don’t go for just a snack, it’s a great meal!

The Best Hot Dog in NJ? You can make that argument. It was a good experience once I finally arrived. The parking is a real pain , but that was to be expected. Heard so much about this place over the years, not sure it met such high expectations. The Italian Hot Dog was really hard to eat. More potatoes than Hot Dog so it was difficult to judge the hot dog itself. It was good, not sure I would go out of my way again, but you cant have that kind of success if you don't know what you are doing. Worth trying.

This is something you need to know. A hot dog/sausage combo is under $10 and it's 100% worth every penny. Another thing you need to know, the sandwich comes with a lot of the potatoes in the wrapper so if you aren't CRAZY hungry, don't order more potatoes. I ordered more potatoes. They were too good to stop eating and I was full for days. The owner was very friendly and was short staffed the day we went so he cooked up some of these potatoes for us to try and dropped a plate for free out of the window. This guaranteed that we were ordering more, smart move. This sandwich is gigantic. A half of this sandwich is enough for any normal person to be more than full. Easily two meals for around $10.

Been coming to this place for over 40 years. Sausage never lost the quality or potatoes in a cup still delicious. This review is about the price for the amount of food, talk about wanting to get rich quick. Charge me more don’t rob me.

Local establishment serving grilled hot dogs and house made Italian sausage. Had the Italian double dog with onions, peppers in a pizza bread bun. Tasty twist on a grilled hot dog.

So I remember about Tommy’s and the Italian hotdogs, and as a hotdog aficionado, I was disappointed. The hotdog being a Sabret, was good, bread was dry and felt like it was a day old. The potatoes were dismal, greasy & undercooked. Onion rings were oil balls with onions inside. All in all trip was a big waist. SMH “But the chicken nuggets were good”.

Tommy’s Italian hot dogs has been on my radar for years. I finally got the opportunity to go there this morning, as I had to be in the area. I checked and they open at 10:30 and as I’m not opposed to having an Italian hotdog for breakfast I got there a little after 11 and it was closed. There was somebody working inside so I knocked on the window and was told that he would open up in 10 minutes. While waiting I noticed that the outside was pretty dirty and sketchy but I had great food at sketchy places so I waited it out. It took about 20 minutes for him to open up the window to order a combo with everything he told me he needed to do something and would take my order in 5 minutes. A few minutes later I order and notice this guy was under some sort of medication, I should have left then. Took 20 minutes more to get my sandwich. Walked around the corner to my car pop the trunk opened it up. And opened it up. First of all wasn’t even hot like it was freshly made. It was just warm. The potatoes were soggy took a few bites, regretted it threw it away. Either I got yesterdays warmed up leftovers or this guy cooked it in oil that wasn’t up to temperature. Now I’m waiting for the food poisoning to kick in. Total disappointment and possible life threatening.

At first glance, one might merely shrug this place off as "Oh, just another hot dog stand". However, it takes more than just a nice looking front to make a great hot dog establishment. And this where Tommy's excels. The hot dogs and sausages are top quality, the chili quite palatable, and the cup of potatoes is a satisfying compliment to your sandwich. The prices are very reasonable as well, and the service is very attentive and accommodating. There is only one drawback, and that one is a common occurrence with stands of this kind. There is almost no place to eat your food here, unless you want to sidle up to a narrow ledge and have a standing meal, or go across the street to Olympia Square and sit down on a narrow cement block. The quality of it all is worth it though.

Solid meal. More than hotdogs. The sausage is made in House, peppers and onions are fresh. Not from a can. Their own original chili recipe.

BEST hot dogs, my friend first took me here years ago. He moved up to Washington NJ, this is still at the top of his list for hot dogs. Guys are real friendly too. If you want good hot dogs THIS is the place 100%

Great Texas weiners and cup of taters, however, don't get here too early, My cup of potatoes was hard, as if not cooked enough, and my hotdog looked like it was a leftover from day before. Still rate a 5 star, but will wait till after 12 noon next time.

Not from the area but based on reviews we came here for some Italian Phillys. Did not expect the massive amount of food we recieved and it was quick delicious. One of the cooks/staff was extremely nice and respectful. The other...meh. but overall a good experience. My son loved the cheese dogs!

I don't know what newspaper, website, and or any publication gave this place "the best" hot-dogs of 2019. Who ever did that was paid-off or like eating horrible food. The chili is sweet and has not Hardy, the actual hot dogs are OK at best, and they give you the hot dogs unwrapped inside of a bag, so most of the toppings will go on the bag or spill off. I give it a one-star for fair pricing, but I shouldn't even give it that much. If there was a negative star option I would use that but there isn't.
