Fantastic. Stayed at the hotel for four nights last week and don’t have a single complaint. The hotel’s atmosphere is super quirky and cool, and the live music downstairs goes until around 10:30 or 11 so you won’t be disturbed when trying to sleep. We were directly on top of the stage and the sound was not an issue at all. The location of the hotel is perfect. Less than a two minute walk to the Osgoode TTC station and right on Queen street with dozens of restaurants and coffee shops to explore. Our room was small but we had no issues with it. The bed was soft and clean and the air conditioning and blinds worked flawlessly. The restaurant downstairs is also great for breakfasts. This was my first stay in Toronto and when I come back eventually I will definitely be returning.

The Good: - The location of the hotel is excellent - The staff was friendly - One of the best-priced hotels I could find with this excellent location - The hotel was actually clean The Bad: - The Internet connection was not good at all, often coming to a full stop and having to rely on my data plan - There was no AC in the room, which makes it unpleasant when it's too hot (or too cold) outside. - Being a night owl, this did not affect me, but if you plan on sleeping before 11 pm, it could be hard as the (very lovely!) jazz music being played in the bar will be heard loudly from your room.

Came for the music! Love the atmosphere of the Rex and the music. I definitely don't come here for the food, not that I was expecting much, but it was a little strange that when we went on a fairly quiet Wednesday evening and were the first ones inside and to order, our nachos came out with cold cheese... Was it sitting there for long? The servers were definitely attentive and super friendly so it's strange that it came out cold. Still worth the trip though!

The music was great. We knew we were going to be late, so we let the staff know via email way in advance since this is what they request in their “policy”. We got a confirmation that it’s all good. However, at the door the manager insisted that we were supposed to call him directly (your website doesn’t list any phone numbers, but OK?) and our reserved seats were no longer available. I get that dealing with people showing up late can be hard, but the least you could do is update the website to include this magical phone number, and not be obtuse when your guests literally show you emails from your staff confirming that they got our message that we’d be late. You can do better and I hope you will, because the rest of the staff was amazing. I highly suggest to figure out a way to not be jerks to your guests who tried their best to follow your policy :)

I've been to the Rex several times now to see live music, and each time the music is great BUT I can't help notice that the crowds are essentially all white. I had a friend say they don't feel comfortable going to the Rex because of this audience dynamic and this has been confirmed to me by several other people too. How has the Rex never noticed this, and what are they doing to help diversify their clientele and make their spaces safer for all people? Why is Toronto's "Best Jazz and Blues Bar" just the best one for white people, and why are they okay with that?

I had a workshop in Toronto for one night. While looking at places to stay, the average spot was $450+. all I needed was a place to sleep. When I found The Rex, I was a little sketched out by the shared bathroom. But that was my bad. The room was perfect. Bed, a/c, sink, desk. Shared bathroom in the hall was great. Very clean and always available. $155 compared to $450+. I also had a drink at the bar and listened to the jazz. Fantastic. ✅ Polite staff ✅ Seem less check-in and checkout ✅ Clean room / shared bathroom ✅ Central location to everything downtown ✅ Great for solo travellers

A bit run down hotel, but an excellent location for an affordable price. If you need to sleep before the bar closing time, get the top floors, because there is no sound insulation and you hear the band performance as if they are in your room. Rooms are small but enough comfort for one night. Only one bath towel for two. Bathroom and surfaces were clean. Responsive front desk. The view from window awful. No wheelchair access.

Went to the Jazz bar to listen to the band and have dinner. Although the musicians were great, the whole experience was a disaster. The food was bad and expensive (we couldn't even finish it even I am not very picky with food). The worst part is the bar was super cold, some people even were wearing their winter jackets inside. The whole experience was disappointing. We left before the show ended. If the show is expensive and you get to pay a cover the food should have at least some minimum quality and the place should have some heating during winter. Lots of improvement there, sadly I wouldn't recommend to friends.

They are making a big effort at the Rex. Somehow they gave the place a polish but still kept the patina. Music was excellent. Room was very good and there are a lot of sight lines even with the pillars and the irregular shape. The actual bar is beautiful as is all the old tavern features. Our food and drinks were quite delicious (the fries!!)and plentiful. My only criticism would be that the menu lacks imagination. If you searched "Roadhouse Menu" you would get the Rex's menu line for line. Someone can cook back there, time to shake up that menu. We saw a great band. The kind of band that people come to listen to. So given the place is a tap room, the crowd was very quietly respectful and enthusiastic. It was good to see that they can support a more performance space vibe. We enjoyed the night very much and the staff and management were very attentive, friendly and understandably proud of their place.

This place is a gem nestled around shopping and restaurants. Close to subway. Reception was friendly and inviting. Rooms were clean and quiet. Amenities in room included towels and soap, tv, Ac, heat. Art work of musicians. Very nice place to stay, would recommend this hotel. Great price. This place was nice and Melo,we loved it! Had breakfast it was delicious! They do have jazz shows there but didn't get to go as we were tired from previous concert. But definitely worth it to check it out as it sounded very good. Service was friendly and inviting. Thanks for great accommodations.

Beautiful old timely diner with an open mic stage. Good audience and drinks. Best to go with your friends or family. Lovely staff and service. Polite and quiet people who love jazz blues and acoustic. I loved this place I'd come back with a date. Good if you love old timey and vintage.

Grade A+ Staff, cool location, intolerable room We planned a two-night stay in a double room with communal bathrooms but ended up cancelling our second night. It's not due to the fact that the room is simple or the bathroom shared. It's also not because it's not clean - because it is very clean. However, the combination of a very old and loud AC, a window you cannot open and outside temperatures slightly north of 20°C meant that we were both unable to get a good night's sleep - even with the AC on full blast. Fortunately, the management was kind enough to let us cancel our second night even after checkout-time had passed. That's great service! However, for 200+ CAD a night, it's not enough. So; great service in a great location. But at least our room - and the communal bathrooms - are in desperate need of a spruse-up for that kind of money.

The jazz bar and club is awesome. Great musicians, good bartending and solid food is inexpensive. The hotel however is another story, as it’s in a very very sad state. The first and primary issue is the cleanliness. It hasn’t had a deep clean in a very long time. My room, 103, smelled like cigarettes, the floor was gross, and the A/C louvres were nasty. If you are forced to stay here, whether or not because you’re on a 3 day crack bender, you’ll want to bring flip flops into the bedroom and the bathroom, and your own soaps. The management just doesn’t seem to really care enough about the guest experience, compared with other hotels. Adding a second star because my things weren’t stolen.

I stayed one night recently. The Rex was awesome in every way. Extremely clean, friendly and willing to please. Room was small but it cost one third of next cheapest hotel in area. Parking next door was only $25 for 24 hours so we parked it and enjoyed the great neighborhood. Food and jazz band was great part of trip! Mike was helpful on desk..all aspects were great beyond expectations!!

We stayed at the Rex recently to attend a concert at Scotiabank Arena. We were so pleased with the location right in the middle of a vibrant, exciting neighborhood, easy walking distance to SO MUCH (including the Arena), easy access to public transit, and all at an affordable price. Yeah, if you're looking for Marriott-like luxury it might not be for you as it's an older, historical building, but it has so much character, the hotel and bar have great vibes, the people who work there are so nice and helpful and cool, the live jazz is top-notch and incredible, and the food is delicious. The Rex has so much character, I felt hip and artsy and cool just staying there. No regrets! Thank you Rex for a great experience, we'll be back!

Don't forget to use ʜᴏᴛᴇʟʙoʟʟʏ.ᴄᴏm when booking a room. This website will compare hundreds of hotel sites and typically will have rooms much cheaper compared to others! Thank me later! This resort is the best rated in this area. I've been coming here for a long time. If you stay for a few nights you definitely will love it I'm sure! Great place for live music, and amazing seats to view the band as well. Food servings were surprisingly filling and staff were amazing. Can’t go wrong coming here for a good time.

Stayed here back in June 2023. To our surprise the room was ready well before 3pm allowing us to put our stuff down and explore the city. Staff were welcoming and receptionist was great, even saying we could have left our stuff with them in a secure room if the room hadn't have been ready. Room was nice and a perfect size. It was clean and amenities were well stocked. My only complaint is that the bathroom was on the tiny side, but other than that it had everything I needed. Thank you!

Great improvements made here for watching live jazz both the layout and acoustics. And buying a ticket online from the website works really well. And I am very pleased that the ticketing insures the musicians get a decent wage. Can't review as a hotel because I didn't stay.

Amazing jazz performances at this venue. A great place to experience the jazz scene in Toronto and find new up and comers and local legends. Only complaint is that the food is utterly terrible. Cooking a descent enough meal is not that hard. I'm not expecting a culinary masterpiece but regular pub food that doesn't taste frozen like it was warmed up in a microwave. Get tickets and go grab a drink and enjoy a great show

Stayed for 4 nights in a double bed with shared bathroom. I was a bit worried about the noise but it wasn't that bothersome and even enjoyable at times. They stopped playing at 11 pm so didn't affect my sleep. The shared bathroom was clean enough and I never had to wait to use it. The location was very convenient if you plan on walking/transiting.

Looks a little rough-and-tumble from the outside, but the room.was super clean. Basic room with no amenities but clean room with clean bathroom and shower is all you really need when traveling. Super chill staff. Great food and good music. Will probably stay there next year on my bday as well, as they are close to everything!! Thanks folks!

Amazing little bar and hotel, with fantastic music. I really enjoyed my experience here, and will definitely be coming back next time I'm in Toronto! Pros: Amazing music and atmosphere, even though I only got to see the last 15 minutes of the show, it was still fantastic. Solid pub food Very clean rooms The hotel offers free day bag storage after check-out, which is awesome for exploring the city by public transit without lugging a suitcase everywhere. Awesome location, only a 5 minute ride on Line 1 from Union Station, and a 5 minute walk from the subway. Great view! the room I stayed in had a nice view of the CN Tower through the window, just peeking between buildings. Neutral: The bar pretty well shuts down at about 11. For some this might be too early, for others it might seem way too late still. I felt it was a good mix, because it allows those who go to sleep earlier at least a fair amount of sleep without music coming through the floorboards. Cons: The windows don't offer much sound isolation. Even with them closed and latched, I could hear the street as if they were open. The blinds took a second to understand how they work, but once I got them down, they kept the room nice and dark. No fridge or microwave. This wasn't an issue for me, as I was just spending a single night, but if you have leftovers, and are staying for a bit longer, it might be a problem for you.

Rating exclusively as a hotel, this is a very strange experience. Other reviews state that you cannot hear the music from your room, this is not true, the music comes through loud on clear. The upside is that the jazz was quite good! Hotel guests add required to still pay a cover to enter the jazz bar which again felt very silly. In sum, I'd return and enjoy the jazz but I wouldn't stay in the hotel.

Could be good as a venue. But. The band is more rock than jazz.. but they try. The setting is weirdly formal in that you are tied to a seat with different prices. Yet the personnel absolutely encourages a horde of people who laugh constantly very loudly and artificially at their own jokes and applaud loudly anything which is simple enough. I guess they are the waiter's friends. Just cannot understand the formality when any ape can fart in the quiet bits. Up your game .. this is not a concert venue for the TikTok crowd. Or maybe it is. Avoid.

We went for an evening jazz show and it was amazing. The restaurant is certainly a hidden gem in Toronto. If you have some love for jazz you must go there for a show, which is $10 that we paid. And apart from that they have a lot to offer for eating and drinking. (No VEGAN options) so we didn't have anything.

Evening out with fantastc jazz at The Rex . They often feature Juno award winners. Turboprop was fabulous. Good good. The steak frites dinner is my favourite there.

I can't speak to the rooms, I just eat and drink there. Some people seem put off at the idea of eating here, which is a shame. The food is great value with a home made feel. Staff is a hoot and the music is good. Old school Toronto gem.

Good hotel and very friendly and accommodating staff. Jazz music was top tier, too. Not too noisy, and the entrance for the hotel is separate from the bar so you can get in and out all night.

Obviously not the nicest hotel but it works if you don’t want to pay much (although it’s still not cheap). Rooms were dated but if you keep your expectations low, it’s not the worst. Good location. Also no window shades or curtains so that was annoying.

We have enjoyed our visit to the rex, the only reason I gave the room a 4 star was that there was no bar fridge in the room! I would recommend this hotel to people and I would come back myself!! You do here the jazz from your room, so if you are looking for a quiet stay it might not be for you, but even then it is only 2 2 hour sessions and done by 1030pm.

A very basic hotel by modern standards. If you want just a place to sleep and no frills, this is it. Rooms are tiny, washrooms tiny, decor very hip. Ery clean and well maintained premises. I'd stay here again if alone. Rooms are too small for 2 people. Very pricey for what you get but hey, it's not the destination, it's the voyage so then, The Rex is a true experience.

Worst fish and chips ever. Menu said"Our own home made batter". Thought it might be a cut above. Instead it tasted like deep fried mush. My friends quesadilla was both burnt and cold. I know you don't come here for the food, but please...

Didn't stay in any of the rooms so I can't really review that. The Rex has always been a place I visited in my college years. The music, service and food is great. They always seem to book a variety of acts that definitely attract many people. Fast forward many years, it's like nothing has changed...everything is still great. N

Fantastic location, super helpful and friendly staff, and great artists performing!! Rooms are clean and spacious. Could not hear any of the music from the bar in the rooms, so if you need a good sleep, you will get it! Easy to walk or take transit from this location to anywhere in the city

Great place for live jazz music and drinks. Live music at the bar had entrance fee 15/ per person and you can order different drinks depending on what you like. Show started around 8:40 so make sure you don’t go to early

Stayed at The Rex Hotel, here is my experience; Hotel room has no bathroom door, just a curtain, interesting but not the worst. The toilet paper is very thin. Some of the towels feel like sandpaper, while others felt fine. The shower was small in my room but did the job, luckily they aren't short on hot water that's for sure! The room is nice, not too badly decorated and it's clean. Speaking of the room, if you're taller than 5'6 you might not fit in the double bed with your legs down lol! The view from my room was a wall with windows at the top, not a nice view but could be worse. The bed is pretty good feeling overall, the pillows are nice but the sheets are like hospital ones but the blanket on the bed was nice and not too heavy but they do provide you a warm fluffy blanket on the side, if need be. The staff were friendly and I had help from the cleaning lady with my door once (it's finicky) and I had help with my luggage by the nice gentleman at the front desk, he took my luggage up many flights of stairs when I arrived. I'm out of shape and I was exhausted going up and down multiple times each day anyway but luckily I only stayed 2 nights. My first sleep was pretty good, I did wake twice in the night but otherwise I slept better than anticipated and I didn't hear the music (maybe because I was on the top floor). My second sleep was rough due to personal circumstances but the bed grew on me, I like it haha. A big plus was the location, phenomenal spot! Lots around: Tim Hortons, Shoppers, a bank, lots of shopping and good eats; with not a bad walk to union station or the Eaton Centre. Overall I'd consider staying here again.

Everything was a 15minute walking distance from the hotel. The hotel was clean, ours had an updated bathroom. We had Tv, wifi, AC, clean bedding , clean towels. For the price it was well worth it. Staff helped direct us to a restaurant and safe places to visit. Seriously 10/10 experience here.

Was in to see the Nathan Hiltz Trio with guest artist Bernie Senensky on Wednesday and so enjoyed the music. The Rex has done everything they can to ensure the safety of patrons. The food was good, the service great. It's wonderful to have live jazz return but it needs audience support. Nathan will be there for the next 3 Wednesdays, hope to see more fans!

So, if you know what you are booking, this is a great hotel at an incredible price. Double beds (not queen or king), tiny room, and in a hall where you can hear every noise from the rooms next to you and even the entertainment from the bar. But, it's clean, and the entertainment is good. Worth the money, for sure. The location us prime and the service was very friendly. I recommend this place to anyone who knows what to expect. Oh and beware, there's no parking on site.

So on the outside it might not seem like much but the location is unbeatable. They were able to store my luggage for me when it was too heavy to carry up the stairs. And you're so close to everything, there's a phenomenal India place across the street that I got take out from. Also shared bathrooms in the hallway. They were so clean. Happy to go back again.

Just a perfect to stay. The room was clean and tidy. I'd booked the standard single and it was exactly what I would expect. Nice and simple. Nothing spectacular but for the price, you really won't find anything better. The location is perfect, the staff very friendly and helpful, plus you have the best jazz and blues bar & restaurant right at your fingertips. Parking is only a couple of hundred feet away at a reasonable price. I paid $25 for 24 hours. They may as well make it free for that price!! Overall, very, very satisfied and happy. I booked it here so that I could attend the premiere of the showing of the movie "Peppergrass" which was showing at the Royal Theatre Cinema, only a 20 minute walk way, and I was so right to do so. Thankyou 'Rex', you were perfect!!

Rooms are a bit small but price is represented respectfully. Bit of a dated feel but good if you like that. Great location though in the heart of downtown, lots of restaurants around and right beside Nathan Philips Square.

The Rex Hotel and Blues Bar is a one of a kind experience. It is a staple establishment that has presented itself to the public that music must be catered to audiences worldwide and beyond. Located right in the heart of downtown Toronto, on Queen Street, right in the center of coffee shops, tattoo parlours, shops, and restaurants, the Rex Hotel and Blues Bar is an experience not to be missed. On Mondays and Wednesdays, the Rex Hotel and Blues Bar hosts local talent that come and bring along their local flavor of music in the Jazz or Blues genre. If you are into drums, base, guitar, flutes, violin, piano, and trumpet, this is your kind of scene. The menu at the Rex Hotel 🏨 Blues Bar is well established with a menu ranging from burgers , to salads, to steaks to chicken tacos. The drink menu on the other hand has an assortment of beer (local) , wine , spirits, and cocktails. I would have to say I will definitely be back at The Red Hotel Jazz and Blues Bar as it was an inviting experience, the staff are very well trained and assist you in any way shape or form. If you don't mind paying a cover charge, which covers the costs of a show, then the Rex is the perfect place to catch entertainment when you are in the area. 🎺🎷👐

Good Friday at 8:30 pm was a casual event and the musicians were young and talented jazz players, led by Patrick Smith, saxophone. The jazz room is old but good for its small size. You will need to reserve prepaid seating. Servers were friendly. I liked the fact that the female servers were dressed in moveable clothing and not showing any fashion induced slowness in covering the room. They were dressed athletically. The beers offered are numerous and the menu is varied. We ordered a humus/vegetable plate which was fresh and well presented. I have been to the Rex before. It is easy to find good music there. This was a great example of you get what you pay for. The service was excellent, as was the location, and the place was well kept, but the bed was quite small and extremely hard. We were lucky that the bathroom was next door, but we hadn't expected a shared one. If back in town travelling solo and the next day wasn't important, I'd stay again in a second, but it would have been nice to have a softer bed, and a bigger one

The hotel is definitely in need of some TLC. I have no issues with a shared bathroom (or I wouldn't have booked it) but you do expect the bathroom to be of a high quality. If it wasn't for the fact it's close to downtown Toronto (and thus you expect to pay more anyway) it would probably be 2*. Staff were very pleasant and no complaints about the food or service, though. The review is heavily influenced by the hotel side. Only paying an extra CAD$10 per night for our accommodation in Niagara and the difference is staggering.

Immaculately clean, thoughtfully simple, in a central location with a fantastic price. I had the single twin room, which has its own sink with a shared toilet and shower. Bed was firm, comfortable, and spotlessly clean. Room was intelligently furnished but not overdone. It's not trying to be anything it's not, but it's really, really good at being what it is - cleaner and quieter and more sober than a hostel, cheaper and more pragmatic than a hotel. I'm so glad this place exists, and I'll be back the next time I'm in town.

Great location and friendly staff (especially friendly day staff). The rooms are old, but clean and the bed is comfortable. The bathroom is small, but functional and considering the price totally fine. Breakfast in the restaurant is really good.

Great staff and atmosphere. Artists excellent as always. Great to go and feel like we did before the pandemic. Long live the rex

One of the very top live music spots in Toronto; best jazz in the city, hands down; great sound and bands; good service and prices. I've been a customer for decades and I couldn't imagine Toronto without it. Best recommendation possible.

Nice service, as always. But the band tonight sucked. She was playing mostly originals and sang but her voice sucked. Her piano playing skills were great along with the band. I feel like The Rex was more selective of the talent but now not so much....I am disappointed after being a regular here.

The Rex Hotel Jazz and Blues Bar are located at the heart of Toronto Downtown. This place defines a 'cozy place.' The music started at 8.30 PM, as they mentioned on the ticket. We bought a ticket for Roberto Occhipinti Quartet. We preferred to sit in the bar section, which was very influential in comparing the price and quality. I can suggest buying a ticket from the bar section. you can see the main scene, don't worry. To have the best personal music listening experience, my advice is to go with a maximum of 2 people. You can even feel meditating on the music while you go alone and sip your drink. Rex Jazz and Blues Bar are highly recommended if you want to give yourself a relaxing night experience. Prices are fair; you must wait a while to deliver your order. That is the only negative side. Overall good experience.

The steak and sweet potato fries are amazing, the atmosphere is terrific, the service is nice, friendly, and timely. Its just small enough to feel cozy but not cramped. The drinks are a bit pricy but the food makes up for it! They host some amazing musicians I highly recommend it!

(hotel review, not bar) I rate 4 for the price, the relatively low price trades off against the generally mid-low tier condition. All I wanted was a place to sleep downtown and it was perfect for that. Just a bed, sink, shower, table, warmth. Nothing crazy. To be clear, it wasn't shabby, just right. I got the private room with the double bed. Cozy.

I love this place. Always good music in the pub. Good food, friendly staff. I consider The Rex a home away from home.

This place has been around forever. Great option on Queen Street to groove to Jazz or my favorite Blues. The sound system is great! Small, but not too small of a venue, with a relaxed atmosphere. I have seen a wide variety of ages attend this bar. But usually a more mature audience. Good food, reasonably priced drinks. There is a cover charge that is automatically added to your bill if you go to the 5:30 show. Tickets have to be purchased for the 7:30 show. Can't comment on the hotel portion as I live in the dowtown area.

Last Sunday I had a great evening at The Rex with my girlfriend watching Paul Riddick and his band performing live, They were amazing. I went back again this evening and took my daughter to see Paul and his band. Great experience again. The Rex is an old nice place, Food is good and price is reasonable. Staff are very friendly.
