If you like Irish food this place might be for you! The appetizer sausage rolls although pricey are real tasty! The Irish stew also was very good. Friendly service reasonable prices what more could you ask for? Maybe bigger parking spots. Go there it’s good!

My cousin and I decided to eat out and go to this Irish themed watering hole. We ordered Chicken Wings in Honey Garlic Sauce, Sliders and Truffle Mushroom Flatbread. We requested the honey garlic sauce on the side, however without it the wings were not as flavourful. The mini burgers were freshly made and served with bacon and cheese and tasted alright.  What we enjoyed the most is the flatbread because it was loaded with lots of portobello mushrooms, caramelized onions and four cheese blend. It was topped with enoki and drizzled with truffle oil which one can immediately have a scent of. It tasted so good and delicious. For dessert we had the housemade sticky toffee pudding with caramel sauce which we always enjoy having in this place. However it was not served with whipped cream as indicated in the menu. The place is clean and service is fast. Update: Had lunch and ordered Steak Frites which was served with matchstick Yukon Frites seasoned with fresh rosemary and parmesan, finished with Leffe Brun hunter sauce. It was so flavourful and tasted so good. The sauce was really a delight, so tasteful that I really enjoyed it and would certainly come back to have it again. Service was excellent.

A great place to grab some pints with some friends! Our server, Boris, was excellet and gave his honest opinions on beverages and food - the food was surprisingly good for a standard Irish pub. I had the sausage roll which tasted freshly prepared and definitely hit the spot

Been coming here for 2 years now as it has been known to me to be a friendly hang out pub to stop by, mingle with the staff, regulars, and grab a quick bite/beer after work… Unfortunately, the last 2 months have got me questioning the direction and management of this establishment… We come here to gather and see recognizable and friendly faces including both staff and guests alike. It has become very apparent that since new management the atmosphere has changed drastically. Your staff is dropping like flies making for a disappointing turn over rate! I’ve been in the industry for years. Restauranteurs need to be held accountable for their staff, be approachable, dependable and always have each other’s back. It is clear that it’s not the case here. My sympathies to your hard working employees who bring a smile to my face every time I walk through the door.

Service was great. The food is average. We were a party of 4. 2 guests had sandwiches – 1 wrap and 1 club. The club sandwich bread (Dempster's, I'm guessing) should be toasted, in my opinion. The side house salad looked really good. 1 of the other guests had the ROAYLE W/ CHEESE BURGER. He liked it. It looked nice and moist, nothing "special" per se. I had the VEGGIE NACHOS. They were big. The top layer was tasty – could use a few more veggies. And after the top layer, the mound of chips were dry, with nothing on them. All in all, average food. We had lots of drinks. Everyone seemed to enjoy the LIQUID APPLE PIE cocktail. It was a little bland I found, but decent. The ATMOSPHERE was VERY pleasant! And we were treated to some live music. Every one was in GREAT spirits. [Warning: Avoid asking for hot sauce – see pic.]

A really nice pub on Kipling! Had some Pinot Grigio, Irish coffee, beers, with chicken tenders and the Bookmaker's sandwich with some sweet potato fries. Delicious!

Friendly service and a spacious pub to enjoy some local eats and a drink with friends and loved ones. Every time I visit St. James Gate I discover new menu items and I'm drawn back to try something else or revisit an old favourite. This time we revisited the wings and fries, and not pictured were the sliders and (because they were too yummy to think of grabbing a pic) the 'beef patties'. Don't let the name fool you, they're more like beef samosas and they come with an amazing Guiness mustard to dip. French fries beside them were a perfect pairing. The wings are good but every flavour option tastes like BBQ, and the sliders were a bit dry, but decent. Overall, a great spot for some casual eats and drinks, and I HIGHLY recommend the 'beef patties'!

Very spacious Resturant that is packed on Friday and weekend nights! The food is typical bar food fair and nothing special. The outdoor patio in the back is a great addition and they do not take reservations for the outdoor seating- first come, first serve. The parking at front looks limited, but there is a green P at the back of the building.

Big yikes to what used to be a great pub to visit. The vibe there used to bring me such joy. How did this general manager get the job? The only thing he knows how to manage is pouring himself a drink and berating the staff. Hiring new staff won't matter if the turnover rate is a revolving door because of him.

Love having brunch here with our big group of friends. It’s one of the few spots in the city where you can have a nice gathering and not feel rushed or like you’re sitting too close to other people. The service here is also so great! Special shout out to Jake - he really went above and beyond for our table by being very attentive and welcoming. The food is also great overall - especially the brunch menu is pretty standard and delicious.

Overall, not a bad Irish pub. Good live music. Unfortunately they will be closing in a year so check it out now before they close.

I have been attending The Gate for years now with local folks and family from Ireland when they visit. Food is always delicious and atmosphere uplifting. I love the innovation to their menu, giving their customers a new and fresh experience every season. Bands and events are always fun, and I have hosted many birthdays and retirements in their back party room. The owners are welcoming and open to hearing customer suggestions. The staff work hard and check in often, making sure we are taken care of. Lots of parking front and back. Have fun folks!

Some friends and I had brunch here. The Chicken and Waffles were delicious. The place looks well kept. The staff was friendly and courteous. It’s a great place to grab a meal or some drinks with friends.

I understand that times have been tough for the restaurant industry lately but you can tell this restaurant is trying to make up for lost revenue. Expensive and portion sizes are small, shockingly small, even the drink I ordered (a Ceasar) came in a whiskey glass . I would swear they had to cut the straw in half to make it look right. Like the decor, parking not great. It’s a shame, could be a great place, may have been at one time. Won’t be back.

I first visited The Gate 7 or 8 years ago and was immediately impressed by the staff and the friendly and professional manner they projected. Within a few visits I felt quite at home as I got to know the staff and bar patrons. A stop for a pint or two after work soon became a regular habit. Unfortunately in recent months this welcoming atmosphere has been eroded in recent months due to the hiring of a dour and overbearing manager. This individual has no qualms about publicly chastising staff members in front of patrons. He has had to walk back a decision to end Drink and food specials but my favorite new decree is his decision to require any request for a reservation of more than FOUR guests to be emailed to him by the guest for approval. The hiring process would appear to be suspect as well. I recall overhearing a previous manager ask an applicant as they walked to his office "what are your interests and hobbies? What do you like to do in your spare time?" For an interview last week Bob-on-the-job took the applicant to the office but not more than a minute later was behind the bar pulling the first leg of his Guiness. He returned to the office only to return 3 or 4 minutes later to tell the bartender the person would be starting the next morning. I commented about the brevity of the interview I was told that Bobby did not ask anything about her work experience but instead focused on two areas...was she married? and did she have children?. I am sure employment equity and human rights agencies would eat this stuff up. Within a short period of time the old staff have had hours reduced or have been bullied into quitting and replaced quickly by mostly inexperienced staff. My afternoon visits have become infrequent as I find a near empty restaurant and bar as once regular customers have found more welcoming hospitality elsewhere. Sad to see a once great spot sliding into oblivion due to incompetence.

What a inviting place and the staff were amazing. Had a great burger and would recommend this establishment as a neighbourhood place to be.

Great pub with lots of patio space. There is a patio out front and in the back! I had my service the staff were great and I only stopped in for an hour or so to read and had a beer. Beer tasted great and staff was great! Given everything is open now there were people seated both inside and outside. Staff all wear masks for safety and inside you can take your mask off if you choose when you are eating. It's very nice to sit on the patio!

Welcome was great, at first the server was quick, taking our drink and appetizer order very fast. The appetizer took a moment to come which was the nachos but was very good. I highly suggest getting the extra cheese as in the picture I took was after the first layer was eaten, there wasn't much cheese afterwards. The service was very good overall, very attentive and helpful. My drink had way too much salt on the rim was my only issue. They did go above and beyond to ensure we got the wild cocktail we wanted and I appreciate it so much, overall a delightful experience:)))

Monday lunch time so quite quiet for a catch up with friends. Great service, no hurry to vacate our table. Decent beer, reasonable prices for good pub food - what’s not to like!

A real gem! Food has always been delicious, well made an quite possibly the only place in the city where you can have a fine Royale with Cheese and finish it off with a proper pint of Guinness. The vibe is authentic Irish. Enjoy while it lasts!

Really cool atmosphere 👌 would give it a 5* if a food quality was a bit better. But was still good food and pleasant staff.

This place is good for standard pub food, drinks and live music. They have a back patio and a front patio. My husband, a couple of friends, a couple of family members and I enjoy coming here.

I am sorry I went there to eat and the food was very cold and you got the dessert this apple thing cold not even warm or hot and forgot the ice cream. The atmosphere was not that pleasant, and the place was quite loud and hard to even talk to, and here, the person next to you talk. The service was very poor, and you had to ask 3 times for a steak knife 🔪 and more napkins. The waitress wanted to change me for alcohol drink I did not have. I would never come there again and would not recommend this place to anyone. I would rather go to Jack Astors. I am very disappointed with the food and the service.

4.5 stars. Had some Guinness and pretzels with mustard dip...really good, we enjoyed it. Service was nice, friendly, and the place is clean. This is a really nice gem, which we were not aware of previously, just happened to be riding along, my GF noticed the nice patio, and we rolled right in. We will definitely be back when in the area, and just recommended it to our friends who live local. It's worth checking out.

Family friendly. Good for groups. Or single at the rail..watch the games ..large space with rooms. Parking in front.and.back. Fast efficient staff. Irish Pub feel.

Friendly staff and patrons. It always feels like coming home, or like your meeting up with old friends. The food is well plated and what you would expect, although some might consider it at the high end of fair pricing. Live music nights have also been a good time in past. Try it before you love it.

Great place with outdoor patio. Pretzels were soft, with a buttery garlic glaze. So perfect as an appetizer. Fish portion was huge on a mound of fries. Staff was great! Would come back again!
