I
first
visited
The
Gate
7
or
8
years
ago
and
was
immediately
impressed
by
the
staff
and
the
friendly
and
professional
manner
they
projected.
Within
a
few
visits
I
felt
quite
at
home
as
I
got
to
know
the
staff
and
bar
patrons.
A
stop
for
a
pint
or
two
after
work
soon
became
a
regular
habit.
Unfortunately
in
recent
months
this
welcoming
atmosphere
has
been
eroded
in
recent
months
due
to
the
hiring
of
a
dour
and
overbearing
manager.
This
individual
has
no
qualms
about
publicly
chastising
staff
members
in
front
of
patrons.
He
has
had
to
walk
back
a
decision
to
end
Drink
and
food
specials
but
my
favorite
new
decree
is
his
decision
to
require
any
request
for
a
reservation
of
more
than
FOUR
guests
to
be
emailed
to
him
by
the
guest
for
approval.
The
hiring
process
would
appear
to
be
suspect
as
well.
I
recall
overhearing
a
previous
manager
ask
an
applicant
as
they
walked
to
his
office
"what
are
your
interests
and
hobbies?
What
do
you
like
to
do
in
your
spare
time?"
For
an
interview
last
week
Bob-on-the-job
took
the
applicant
to
the
office
but
not
more
than
a
minute
later
was
behind
the
bar
pulling
the
first
leg
of
his
Guiness.
He
returned
to
the
office
only
to
return
3
or
4
minutes
later
to
tell
the
bartender
the
person
would
be
starting
the
next
morning.
I
commented
about
the
brevity
of
the
interview
I
was
told
that
Bobby
did
not
ask
anything
about
her
work
experience
but
instead
focused
on
two
areas...was
she
married?
and
did
she
have
children?.
I
am
sure
employment
equity
and
human
rights
agencies
would
eat
this
stuff
up.
Within
a
short
period
of
time
the
old
staff
have
had
hours
reduced
or
have
been
bullied
into
quitting
and
replaced
quickly
by
mostly
inexperienced
staff.
My
afternoon
visits
have
become
infrequent
as
I
find
a
near
empty
restaurant
and
bar
as
once
regular
customers
have
found
more
welcoming
hospitality
elsewhere.
Sad
to
see
a
once
great
spot
sliding
into
oblivion
due
to
incompetence.
