This place is no joke. The food quality is top-notch. There are so many options on the menu that you can't possibly try everything in one seating — you have to come back again. That said, a few favorites were the brussel sprouts appetizer, any sashimi and the braised pork belly don. But again, you can't go wrong with any other options, everything is good. Would recommend ideally for groups of 2-6!

Highly recommend this authentic Japanese izakaya. Food is yummy and affordable. Service was very friendly and they took the time to explain to us each dish. Only thing is that they took a while to pour us some water. Would visit again!

Great place! They have a very interesting interior design, decorated with retro Japanese toy and stuff. Ambiance is very nice. Food is great! Fish was great (both himachi and any sashimi). Really recommend.

This place is truly hidden gems. The quality of the seafood is top notch. Decent pricing as well. I even tried their braised pork belly, which is very tender melt in your mouth kind of food with amazing well balanced taste. They mane many selections of uni which is amazing. I had Uni sashimi from Boston, very fresh and creamy. Also if you looking for some Japanese ingredients, they have a small retail area which has good selections and the pricing is actually better than other Japanese retail places.

I am super excited for Kingyo to reopen! We went for a quick snack before our dinner. Everything was extremely fresh. We enjoyed all the dishes we ordered. We were pleasantly surprised that we were able to deep fry the shrimp head upon request. Crunchy and salty!!! Would definitely go back to try everything else. Please keep in mind they have limited indoor seating, so it might be better to do takeout.

Really enjoyed my time here, it was my first time hearing/ coming to Kingyo. The sashimi was extremely delicious and fresh and the other foods were delicious as well. They are half supermarket with Japanese goods and half restaurant with limited seating. We got the: Makunouchi Platter Negitoro Don Sea Urchin Bibimbap Agedashi Tofu Deluxe Sashimi Platter

Such an excellent menu, that comes with set options, a course menu, tasting options and a la carte. A diverse amount of different meat and fish options as well. The grilled salmon on the tasting plate was the highlight of the meal, but everything was delicious. The service was excellent as well and the overall ambiance. The market attached with imported Japanese goods was a nice touch as well. I will definitely be coming back.

Amazing service and the food is delicious! We had the makunouchi platter, scallop don, and torched salmon pressed sushi. All great. Love the intimate atmosphere to connect. They also have a cute store in the back with lots of goodies

One of the best Japanese restaurants in the city for the price and quality. Fish was so fresh and dishes felt more authentic than other Japanese restaurants. Staff was so friendly, and there’s a nice market to browse through after. Would definitely come back

Food is good. Service is good. Price is good. Vibe is good. I’ll be back for sure. My son loved the kids platter, especially cause it came with a toy!! The other platter is great for a little bit of everything. My wife enjoyed the beef shabu shabu and I enjoyed the scallop don. They have lots of interesting items and drinks on the menu so I’ll be back again and again to try them all. Keep it up Kingyo!

Ordered chicken karaage and salmon lover. The chicken karaage was super juicy and crispy. The salmon bowl was extremely delicious and the salmon just melts in your mouth. The miso soup had a very rich flavour. All staff are friendly and helpful. I’m glad I got to try this place and will definitely come back to try other menus!

Great Japanese eatery located in Toronto's East side northern downtown. Ordered the weekday lunch specials. Tan Tan Noodles with mini pork don. Also had the Pork don with takoyaki. Both are freshly made and well portioned. They also sell Japanese goodies, pantry items, frozen ramen, sashimi/sushi, ready to eat meals. There's something for everyone. Wait staff service was attentive, they refill water, take away finished plates as needed. Place was spotless. No background music which makes conversations a breeze. Decor was typical Japanese restaurant vibes.

Great price for the quality. The Boston uni was delicious and they had a nice variety Japanese snacks and drinks too. There is also a fridge filled with a variety of sushi grade fish and seafood for home sushi chefs!

I would say five stars—more for the experience rather than the actual taste of the food. I was bursting with excitement to try this place because although I was already living vicariously through everyone’s review pictures, my stomach still needed a bowl (or three) of first-hand experience. Right off the bat, when we opened the restaurant doors, we were greeted by an insurmountable heatwave. It was scorching hot. We didn’t know we signed up for a sauna session, but the whole aesthetics and set up of the place outweighed our bodily need to cool down (this was about a month and a half ago, so maybe they have AC in place now). We ordered the dishes that had me salivating all week long from the Google pictures I saved on my phone and looked at every night (does anyone else do this? Lol). However, when I finally had the chance to gorge, I was mildly disappointed because everything tasted one-note. I thought the presentation, the cuts of the seafood, and the overall preparation of our meal had a lot of heart, but I also just tasted a whole lot of brine, and the dishes didn’t pack the umami punch I was looking for. Portions were tiny, as well, for the price we paid. With the market attached to the restaurant, it did give it a unique twist. Combined with polite servers and high quality ingredients, it felt authentically Japanese. So it’s hard to give this five stars based on food alone, but the whole concept of this restaurant/market is what boosts the rating to one more star. Will be back to try other items on the menu, but maybe not any time soon.

I had quite high expectation before coming in as I heard so many good things about this place. The experience was unfortunately horrible. We tried their sashimi, and for the first time in my life I tasted a SOUR toro. I’ve tried toro at other places and it’s never like this. It has a strong fishy odor that almost made me throw up. Not sure how they store all their fish but this one really tasted like they are not following the correct practice. It really ruined my experience and I will not consider coming again given this health concern.

I recently enjoyed a fantastic meal at this Japanese restaurant. I ordered the Kakuni Don and the Salmon Lover Teishoku, and both dishes were exceptional. The Kakuni Don was a melt-in-your-mouth delight with tender pork belly, and the Salmon Lover Teishoku was a seafood lover's dream. The atmosphere was cozy, creating a perfect setting for a delightful meal. The service was top-notch, with attentive staff who made sure every detail was taken care of. I highly recommend trying the Kakuni Don and Salmon Lover Teishoku here. It's a must-visit spot for Japanese cuisine enthusiasts, offering great food, a wonderful atmosphere, and excellent service. I can't wait to return for more!

Don’t forget to reserve the seat online before you come. Nice environment. The food tasted really fresh. Love the taste of the lychee cocktail. The pork in the bento box tasted so soft and juicy. The beef tongue dish allowed you to cook the beef tongue on a hot stone, which is a fun experience. Super nice staff that makes me felt welcoming. Will definitely come again for its good food and service!

The food is perfect! The server provides friendly and warming service. The only downside is some of the price of the Japanese goods are relatively higher than other other stores but they do have high quality products.

Absolutely fantastic. I wasn’t expecting it to be this good - I got the beef tataki salad to start, and had the steak don. Great portion sizes, great quality and delicious as well. Definitely returning and trying some of their other dishes as well (pressed sushi!!) - 10/10

My friend invited me to try this place before they closed down for renovations. The staff knew their menu well and have good recommendations when it comes to which drink goes well with what dish. We ordered the deluxe bento box which is like a sampler set of nine dishes, the nigiri special, the tiger prawn tartare, the beef tongue, a bottle of sake, yuzu G&T, Moscow mule, and the Doraemon drink. 1) Bento Box I don't remember which dishes came in the set but I really enjoyed the ebi mayo the most. I believe it also came with karaage, salmon, beef, corn, and others. There's enough food to share with another person as well. 2) Nigiri Special The fish they used is from Taro Fish. Not much to say except for it being fresh. The Nigiri already has wasabi added to it so it doesn't come with any on the side. The tuna tataki bowl was also pretty good. 3) Tiger Prawn Tartare The dish comes with garlic toast and the tartare is mixed with avocado. It was quite lovely and I enjoyed the garlic toast. 4) Beef Tongue I've never really tried this before and it was unexpected. I did find the meat to be slightly salty but the sauce it came with complements the beef tongue well. 5) Drinks The bottle of sake we ordered was recommended by the staff as it pairs well with the fish on their nigiri plate. The cocktails were regular but I liked the yuzu g&t the most. The food is what you'd expect from an izakaya and a bit on the pricier side too. But I would come back and try their noodles next time since I didn't get the chance to. The service was good, the food came pretty quickly and the server was attentive.

Excellent sashimi and sushi spot. Very fresh and tasty. The drinks are also very good. Haven't tried anything that wasn't great. There is a mini grocery on the right side and a dining section on the left. Very casual atmosphere. There are retro Pachinko machines with colourful lights on the wall. The staff are very friendly and professional. I would probably be here all the time if I lived around the corner.

Return the first time after they changed to market style. I am glad that they still keep 1/3 of the space for dine-in. We ordered their tasting menu. Seafood is fresh and great service!

One of the more underrated Japanese spots in Toronto ever since they renovated. They have a store where you can buy Japanese imported goodies. In terms of food, their sampler appetizers is a great way to try a bunch of appetizers. Their sushi rolls especially the torched salmon one was delicious. Also ordered a ramen which was surprisingly very close to flavors from Japan. Would recommend making reservations as it could be busy.

Loved our experience here. Servers were very nice and friendly. We strut thinking wet had a reservation but for some reason, the booking was not made. But they were quick to offer us the bar area and did not make us wait. Good service for sure. Food was fresh and had enough variety, from classics to more creative fares. Worth a try. Also don’t forget to check out their grocery section. We bought some frozen ramen and they too were very good.

Walked in Saturday afternoon for a quick lunch, had no trouble finding a seat by the bar Service was friendly and helpful. Nice ambiance with a mini grocery as well Ordered the scallop & tuna don and salmon don. Both are fantastic and delicious. Everything was fresh with no fishy smell/taste. Good sized portion as we walked out quite full Would recommend it!

food was good but the price point is quite high for the amount of fish to rice ratio for the rolls and the bowl. don’t get me wrong, they tasted good but not sure if it’s worth the price point. we had a good time and the service was great :) all of the staff were lovely. the seating time was perfect (1h30min) as we were finishing up right on the cusp of our time. we had the monthly special sake- i can’t remember the name of it but it had citrus notes and was the 1st option of the two bottles. it was very sweet and not very cold- so maybe ask for extra ice if you like sweet sake. we didn’t end up finishing it but it was still good, just a bit sweeter than we thought. we had the marinated kaisen don which was tasty (but maybe not worth the price point?) it was nice to share and try each sashimi together as it came with 2x of each; salmon, tuna, sea bream and scallop. the scallop was lovely and the sea bream also stood out. we are salmon lovers too so we’ll always love that. the tamagotchi in the rice was a great touch- i loved it. we also got the torched salmon and the ikura salmon roll. both were delicious. the torched was my favourite however, as it was melt in the mouth. we ended up ordering delivery at around 10pm though since we got hungry again… but i do think that is due to the rice (carb) to fish (protein) ratio since we were stuffed at the restaurant and couldn’t finish all the rice. it the food was a bit more reasonably priced or had a bit more fish to rice ratio the food would get 4 🌟 the atmosphere was beautiful in appearance but the tables were uncomfortably close. when people had to pass by they would brush the table, it would be better to have 1 less table in the line of seated tables for slightly more comfort at this level of priced dining. it felt like a fast food ramen restaurant with how cramped it was, everyone was just slightly too close for comfort- which again, would be alright if the price point reflected that but it is a bit of a higher end style sushi resto. 2 🌟 the servers were clear about our seating time and we stayed within it so we did not feel rushed. they were incredibly kind, sweet and efficient. lovely’s experience with them: 5 🌟 tldr; it felt like higher mid ranged sushi priced at lower high end prices, staff were lovely, atmosphere is not great for the price point of dining they are trying to achieve. we had a good experience, im not saying we didn’t but it wasn’t amazing or anything extraordinary from what i’d read and heard

I have been going here for a few months and that sentence itself shows how much I love this establishment. From the grocery store to the restaurant to the staff, everything is great. I come here at least once a month with my friend to enjoy their fresh seafood-based dishes that are reminiscent of Japan. Their grocery store offers delicacies not normally found in other grocery stores. As well, the aesthetic of the establishment provides an aura of coziness and warmth.

The platter is to die for – 12 different kinds of food on one plate. It's incredibly filling and savory. The ambiance is so cozy that it makes you feel at home, and the service is excellent! The food arrived just in time.

Nice service in a smaller restaurant with a varied menu that's on the pricier side, but the quality is great. Would recommend giving it a try. Marinated Kaisen Don - assorted fresh, high-quality seafood that was balanced in flavor. A bit too much rice relative to the fish portions. Came with pickled radish, carrots and ginger, and miso soup that wasn't overly salty. Filling. Yuzu gelato - the candied peel was crisp and delicious, slightly sweet with a hint of bitterness. The gelato was a bit too sweet for me, but it was light and refreshing. Jasmine cream roll with fruits - good, a bit too sweet again. My friends enjoyed their pork katsu don and pork belly don. The wagyu steak don had a really small portion of beef vs. rice, for $35. A la carte sashimi - the chutoro was $10 a piece, thickly cut, fresh, and fatty. Came on an ice bed, and there was seaweed, cucumber slices, and tobiko to make a little handroll. There is a cool snacks and drinks market section in the restaurant. Would like to return to try the tasting platter.

  • 5/5 Anthony C. 4 months ago on Google
Amazing tasting dons at a super reasonable price. We got both their marinated kaisen don and salmon lovers don. They both had added ingredients to them that made them unique to each other other than just plain fish and rice. The kaisen Don had a variety of marinated fresh fish with tobiko seasoning that added extra flavor to the dish while the salmon lovers came with a raw quail egg yoke that made the dish creamy. The mix between the regular salmon sashimi and the torched salmon was also rather unique and both were very buttery. Would also recommend getting the melon cream soda drink as well which tasted great.

Amazing tea options, Japanese goodies and desserts. Must go- tea comes by the pot or glass and is very affordable. Service was warm and the place opens up till 10.30pm. They serve alcohol too!

Best sashimi I’ve ever had! The salmon bowl (I don’t remember the exact name) was absolutely fantastic. Great quality! Without the sides my meal was about $19, other dishes were pricier but I’m sure they are worth it! Looking forward to returning and trying some of the other dishes - the fried tofu looked amazing. Attentive staff. The attached market is lovely as well.

Was excited to go back to Kingyo since they re-opened. The food was good, and the fish was fresh, but it just wasn’t the same. It’s to par with a lot of other places uptown. The presentation for my Kaisen don was definitely a thumbs up, but I was also having a bit of trouble trying to eat it all while ensuring it didn’t fall onto the tray. As much as I loved the bowl and presentation, the rice and roe was also just getting stuck in between the bottom of the wooden slates. We loved Kingyo before for their uni don. They currently have an uni and ikura don but it was a bit of a sticker shock. If it’s the same one, which I hope it isn’t, then the prices have gone waaaay up. Needless to say, we did not order it. Not the restaurant’s fault but the air conditioner was broken and it was pretty hot and stuffy inside. The servers were troopers in all honesty to be working in such warm conditions. They still provided awesome service with a smile on their face :)

Great place for authentic Japanese food! We ordered their appetizer platter and were soooo happy with the choice! I can’t recommend their shrimp tempura (ebi mayo) enough, best I’ve ever had! The fish bowls were both amazingly fresh and perfectly flavoured, highly recommend this place. Their seating is limited so having a reservation would be helpful.

Would return. Recommended. A high quality take on modern Japanese cuisine and mini-mart combo. Key features include the Kingyo Makunouchi Platter and the Marinated Kaisen-Don. Similar to Raisu in Vancouver and it's namesake sister restaurant Kingyo - the must try item here is the Bento/Platter. 12 mouthfuls of their appetizers including Karaage, Shrimp, Pork, Seafood Tartare, Egg Custard. Marinated Kaisen Don is also worth it, with 4 types of fish. Doesn't take AMEX. Expect $40pp. Please follow @trebzheng for more Toronto and travel eats :)

Kingyo recently reopened in Cabbagetown and I love the updates! They have a dine in and takeout menu as well as frozen foods and pantry items. They also have a great selection of Sake by the way! This is definitely a neighbourhood gem but if you haven’t tried it before and if you’re in Toronto, it’s a great place! The staff are so lovely and friendly and very knowledgable about their menu! TY for the great visit!

Cute little Japanese grocer + diner place. You can pickup prep food for a value price. My friend got sashimi Don for $17.50 and she liked it. Very impressed with their rice. I got the scallop tuna pate Don for $30 which I would definitely recommend. Other food all looked great on other tables lol will come back and try.

Lively spot with great decor. Pictured is the pork loin cutlet and salmon bowls. Both very nice. Everything we saw come out the kitchen looked great. Will be coming back for sure. Grabbing sushi or another item to go then heading to the nearby park looks like a great option of the place is full.

A true hidden gem :)) “Fisherman’s market” exudes the air of freshness and indeed everything is so fresh. Scallops here definitely melt in your mouth. Seafood tartare is so good and please don’t skip desserts 🍨 They also offer Ramune - my most favorite soda. For sure I’ll come back.

Excellent service! It can get quite busy but the wait is well worth it. Try and make a reservation if you plan on visiting during the weekend evenings. I ordered the Kaisen Don which came with topped with yummy salmon, sea bream, tuna and scallop and my friend ordered the Salmon Lover. Great portions and quality for the price point. Disappointed for the price I paid. I feel like for the sushi they over do it adding unnecessary items like bitter peel. Waste of fresh fish. All the dishes were missing something flavour wise.

Unique fish market combination with a restaurant with interesting dishes. The atmosphere is small with limited seats, but the staff really treat you well with their cheerful service. They have a wonderful selection of different sakes and Japanese goods. I would recommend the tasting platter if you're undecided as all the different flavours will take your taste buds for a ride! They also have lots of different drink options and very fairly priced overall.

I love how it’s a restaurant and a shop. We ordered the torched saba pressed sushi, jumbo ebi mayo, marinated kaisen don, sizzling agedashi tofu and the two-kind grilled fish. Everything was delicious except for the agedashi tofu… the texture was all too soft when the hot liquid was poured over top the tofu. The portion size was also quite large! Which is good but we didn’t enjoy the dish. The two-kind grilled fish can easily feed 2 people or 1 person as a meal. The prices are reasonable and the quality of the fish is fresh. They have an amazing selection of Japanese imported products. I would definitely come back or recommend to others.

This small resto offers good Japanese food and a small store inside with take out Japanese food and treats. The food was decent, ambience was so so but not a problem if you’re just in for a quick casual meal. I would say this is a good go to for a daily Japanese treat.

  • 5/5 jeff m. 7 months ago on Google
Good was really good, you can tell they use high quality ingredients. Pricier than your normal japanese restaurant but well worth it. Might be a good idea to make reservations because the place isnt that big. Also has a nice little market where you can buy some ingredients that muggy be hard to find at other stores.
