I have massive respect for this place! The least I could say about my 4 months of training was that it was greatā€¦I like the instructors and the facilitiesā€¦unfortunately, my journey with them ended on bad terms. They withdrew money from my account (1 month subscription worth 160 CAD) after I paused my membership without my consent. I tried to contact them for a refund but they claimed that the hold on my membership was over and they needed to resume it, although they have never informed me of this prior of withdrawing the money from my account. I had to pause my membership because I was away working for a long time. Sad how this ended. Iā€™d never go back to a place where my credit card information was used without my consentā€¦Iā€™d have been more than happy to support the gym financially but only willingly and definitely not this wayā€¦

I have nothing but the most respect for the staff at this facility! Very welcoming, warm and hospitable. When it came to rolling, many people would only want to roll with their friends and itā€™s usually college dominant people, looking to tap people by any means (pulling fingers, elbow to larynx, both that i have experienced). The senior members are also incredible though. Theyā€™re not looking to injure you, trying to help you learn however, thereā€™s only a handful of them. Overall, great place if youā€™re experienced and just looking for a place to roll. If youā€™re a beginner, you might want to look elsewhere.

Hands down the best Jiu Jitsu gym in Toronto. Here's why: 1. A plethora of world-class instructors - Professors Elliot, Dan, Dennis, and Mike are all fantastic instructors with a lot of knowledge. 2. Classes run all day - whether you're a morning or night person, there's going to be something going on to fit your work schedule most days of the week. 3. Great management - unlike most other gyms, Stephen and the management crew / ownership really look after their members and are extremely professional. 4. Great team - there's plenty of guys training there from different backgrounds and motivations. Whether you're looking to compete and take the fast lane in learning BJJ, or if you're a beginner that wants to take it slow and really get the fundamentals down in a safe setting, the team is very well balanced to accommodate for your goals. Overall I had a great experience for around half a year at the gym and will definitely rejoin once I return to the Toronto area.

They claim to offer personal trainers with flexibility to train around your schedule and offer different belt levels to meet various types of budgets, but when I tried to book a trainer no one was every available. I had an intro lesson with Prince, but he was too busy to take on any new clients, so I began meeting with James, who had a very inconsistent schedule, one week he would be free three times a week, then the next week only twice, then one week not at all, he also cancelled a bunch of times last minute or just wouldn't show up, then he said he wasn't available to continue training at all. I then met with another trainer Aaron but after being tossed around between trainers so many times I called it quits. The students in standard classes are not friendly to new comers. Students only want to spar/roll with their friends or who they know. Unless you know someone or go with someone into the class the chances of rolling with someone is very rare.

This is a good dojo. Super professional, knowledgeable instructors and a friendly student body. I wish I could train here more but my work trip was too busy. They accepted me and showed great hospitality on my Toronto trip. Stephen the manager even called me the day after my class to see how it went. That is excellent PR. Thank you guys. I will be back. Much success - Gus

I came to learn self defence and stayed for the positive culture! All the coaches are so kind and take the time to thoughtfully explain the techniques to you. Not only will they explain the moves to you until you get it but they also make sure that you don't hurt yourself while trying it out. All my partners have been kind and aren't aggressive. I highly recommend coming here to learn self defence and BJJ!

Iā€™ve been training at OpenMatMMA since 2013, I started as a blue belt, commuting weekly from Owen Sound (2.5 hours away each way) to now over 10 years later, when I can, bringing down my own academy team, and we are always welcomed with open arms. Professor Elliott is absolutely an amazing instructor and leader, if you need high level techniques, heā€™s got you, if you wana compete, heā€™s got you, if you wana be a hobbyist, heā€™s got you. If you need guidance off the mats, heā€™s got you. And if you canā€™t make it to Professor Elliottā€™s classes, he has an incredible team of well trained, prepared for coaching, coaches on the mats. Always positive and approachable individuals, there to help you. OpenMat offers several programs, several class times, Mauy Thai, BJJ (Gi & NoGi) & Wrestling and have a weight training area inside the academy. Joining OpenMat over a decade ago, has been the best decision Iā€™ve ever made as a BJJ practitioner, if you are a beginner their fundamental program will take you from brand new to expert with an encouraging, supportive atmosphere. Do yourself the favour and join OpenMatMMA āļøāļøāļøāļøāļø

I came here to drop in for their Friday no gi class. Excellent, technical, easy to understand instruction, super welcoming professor and students. Professor Denis was very friendly. Clean facility, Iā€™m definitely coming back next time Iā€™m in town.

I enjoyed training no gi bjj at open mat! All the instructors are excellent and pay a lot of attention to students. Classes are fun and the atmosphere is great. Really liked the rigorous approach to the blue belt curriculum.

Would never recommend this place. They charged my credit card out of nowhere (2 months of membership about $300) after I stopped going there for months and after many follow ups and many promises that they will refund me, they never did.

Great service at OpenMat! They treat you like one of their own weather youā€™ve been there for years or if itā€™s your first time they create an environment where you want to go back and keep training and learning šŸ’Ŗ

Iā€™ve done jujitsu for many years and have trained at many different schools around the world. I have to say without a doubt that Coach Bayev and his other coaches are second to none. They are the friendliest, most welcoming group who are always willing to go the extra mile to teach and to help their students grow.

Great facility. I can see the appeal OpenMat holds. Coach Elliott and his team are very friendly. The athletes are all very friendly. We attended for a weekend BJJ seminar and that was a good experience. Thank you for a great experience. Looking forward to many more.

I started at OpenMat about a month ago. I was worried about learning BJJ because there are typically mostly guys in the classes. I was warmly welcomed by everyone at OpenMat and each class the Class Assistant (Amber-- she is amazing) works very 1:1 with the girls in the class. I have learned a lot so far and will keep coming back šŸ˜Š

I was visiting from out of town and emailed to ask about dropping in for a class. The GM Taisley was quick to reply and welcomed me with a free first class. The facility was very clean, big and nicely ventilated. Elliott taught the class I went to and was a phenomenal instructor. He went over each move in detail and fixed even the smallest of details. He was very generous and even invited me to join his competition class the following day. If you're visiting or thinking of starting BJJ, I highly recommend you check out OpenMat MMA.

Fantastic school! Instructors were super welcoming. Training partners friendly and eager to learn. Mainly doing the Muay Thai classes. Oliver is an amazing coach: funny and observant of each student. Very welcoming of all skill levels. Whether you are totally new at this art or have experience, Oliver will give you good insight on how to improve to the next level. Classes offer a good mix of conditioning and technique work. From time to time I also do the gi-BJJ 101 classes. JP is a superb instructor, very detailed in the techniques. Classes are technique oriented, followed by positional sparring at the end, then open mat (open sparring). All in all, love this place would recommend to all!

Facility: It's a small basement, it can lack fresh air but not too bad. Changing rooms are very basic and small too. the facility seems to be relatively clean for a grappling gym, no complaints there. There is a weights area, I wish it was used as some sort of stretching/lounge area. There are gyms everywhere in Toronto, I would get rid of it. 3/5 People: The students/staff/instructors are very friendly and nice people, anybody would feel welcome here. 5/5 Schedule: Really good schedule but it could have been better if there were more weekend classes, especially if you're under 30. 4/5 Instructors: Elliot, Mike & Carlos are really great instructors but Elliot does not teach as often as I would like. I haven't gotten used to some other instructors teaching style but that's normal. 4/5 Pricing: BJJ is expensive (compared to yoga studios, which basically are open spaces + instructors, just like BJJ) at any gym in Toronto, and probably around the world, here is no exception. Overall: I have no idea about striking part (kickboxing), can't comment. If the facility was better, this would be a 5/5 gym for a hobbyist like me.

I came to that place as Visitor on vacation. They charged me a very fair price while my stay for the NoGi BJJ classes. The hygiene on the mat is taken very serious here, it gets swept multiple times a day. I experienced the instructors as very patient and polite. The other students were also cool, nobody with a too big ego or something. I recommend this gym to everybody in Toronto who wants to start with combat sports or is looking for new gym to train.

Just wanted to share my experience. Iā€™ve been training private sessions here since 2019 and itā€™s one of the best decisions Iā€™ve ever made. I started without any martial arts background and just wanted to get in better shape while learning an awesome skill. The coaches who Iā€™ve trained with, first Prince and now Ondrej, let me work at my own pace. Theyā€™ve both done MMA so I know their skills are legit. Thereā€™s also never any ego rolling in privates so training always feels safe. The coaches just let me work and teach me their skills. They also challenge me to push myself a bit every session. So if youā€™re a first-timer with a busy schedule and looking for an approachable place to learn and get in shape, train at OpenMat.
