What a fantastic experience! Definitely recommend coming for a guided tour of the castle; it is interesting and educational for both adults and kids. Big appreciation to our both knowledgeable and passionate about his work guide. The photos are nothing without the story behind them, such attention to details! We’ve enjoyed the tour so much! Check out a little gift shop, and bring you lunch/tea to have in a nearby park with picnic tables. And make sure to book online; it gets sold out pretty quickly.

Castle is incredible. You’ll see the beautiful Burlington bay. Picturesque views. Mature trees and a fun place for a family to chill and relax. Designated area for picnic and it has cover

What an incredible piece of history! Filled with accurate artifacts and furniture from the 1800s, the once largest house in Canada is sure to be a History-Loving-Tourists dream stop. Very affordable hour long guided tours with tour guides who have immense knowledge for even the toughest of history questions. Dozens of rooms to visit and endless sites to see. Be sure to go take a peek at the Kitchen Garden in the back as well, where they still garden with time period accuracy. A wonderful place to stop!

Wow. What a tremendous learning experience it is to take a guided tour of the inside of Dundurn Castle! An amazing glimpse into what life was like (for those of wealth and privilege) nearly two hundred years ago. Our guide, Frank and his colleague Julia, looking after the kitchen, were so knowledgeable and informative! If you have a Hamilton Public Library card, admission to Dundurn is FREE (not just Dundurn, but lots of other Hamilton museums - get a library card - it's free too)! We had just missed the Christmas decorations - from other reviews, this is an extra special time to tour, so we'll definitely be back! Admission to the Hamilton Military museum (located a short walk across the grounds) is included with tickets to Dundurn. Online tickets are easy to arrange whether you are paying or getting free tickets with your library card (you need to show your library card when you come for your tour). Highly recommended! Visited January 13, 2024 Cynthia and I.

Every time when I googled about top things to do & see in Hamilton, the Dundurn Castle pops up, but I just haven't got a chance to check it out until now. I have to say, why is it called the "Castle" when it's more like a mansion? I don't get that part. Anyways, I finally got a track to check this place out, from the outside since during the pandemic, inside tour is closed. This castle is definitely a great spot for people to take photos and videos as it's photogenic and has a nice spacious space. I do have to say that it does have this eerily vibe to the structure and the overall surrounding. It's located across a cemetery and it's just have this uneasy vibe to it, but it is a cool spot to explore and roam around the property. And there is a bridge near it that you can see the view of Hamilton. It's a cool spot.

Dundurn Castle is so worth the visit (and only about $15/person)! The tour lasts about 1 hour. Parking is free. You'll have to book tickets online — but you might also be able to walk in and book in person (if it's not a busy day). You can also see (online) how many others have already booked for each tour guide sessions. We went at 2pm on a Tuesday and it wasn't busy. Parking was easy. Our tour guide (Michael) was excellent! When we went, they also had a "cook" that gave us small shortbread squares. The castle itself feels like a big, old mansion — rather than a "castle". But it's still fascinating.

Excellent place for weekends. We did almost 2 hours over there. This place comes with guide who will explain you everything about the castle. It very interesting. The whole staff are dressed in late 1880’s attire which was interesting. We were planning to visit somewhere else but ended up in at the place eventually and I must stay it was worth a visit. Tickets are not expense compared to the details you get about the castle also it covers the price for the military museum which is also good. The castle has its own garden which produces vegetables fruits and all other kind of herbs. Unfortunately we weren’t able to see much of it,as it was still on a starting stage. Anyhow, suggested time visit the garden is after July 11th. In general, very cool place to understand the family history and the luxuries life of MacNab’s family. I didn’t posted any inside photos just for the sake of tourism.

Absolutely amazing experience with a tour guide booked in advance, we're able to travel back in those times when Hamilton just started to emerge and establish as a newly built community. Having a tour guide at this place is absolutely necessary as you're going to learn a lot of facts and history, as well as all the questions answered. Staff is very friendly, knowledgeable and willing to provide the best experience.

Admittedly we went on a bit of a dreary day (weather wise), with a thunderstorm appearing at the end of our visit, serving to both clear the park out, as well as dampen our resolve to see the gardens in the back. We took a tour of the estate, while the staff was knowledgeable and friendly, I found it quite disheartening that the estate itself was in an early state of disrepair. It's effective enough to tell a story and tour through, certainly - but compared to similar places in other countries the peeling wallpaper and subtle cracks in the paint, along with some of the warping wood throughout the property leads one to wondering why these things are tolerated when you'd never see anything of the sort in any other commonwealth nations national historic site. Certainly worth a visit, and we would have loved to see the gardens in the back, but don't expect to be blown away with opulence as you might expect from other "castles"

Wow! We went for a tour at Christmas and it was lovely to see it decorated. Much nicer than some of the estates I've toured in England. The basement was very impressive and the guide was great. Great gift shop with local crafts. Weird hours but worth making it work - give yourself atleast two hours. Will go back in summer to enjoy the grounds and garden.

This place is absolutely gorgeous! Perfect for a day picnic in summers, watching the season change in fall and winters too. Perfect spot for clicking memorable pictures, weddings and even first dates. It's a popular location for film shoots, particularly hallmark movies. This place has my heart.

Lots of history! Take a walk into the past and learn about this historic relic through the evolution of Canada. Well preserved, clean and original, I felt transported into the past. This is a guided tour but You get to tour the kitchen garden and military museum for free by yourself. The park is a beautiful place to picnic with family

I visited here yesterday, I haven't been here since I was a kid in school. The tour I went on was great, the young woman guiding the tour was very informative, and answered everyone's questions. All the rooms were very nice, and displayed like they were frozen in time. I learned alot of new things about the history of the Castle, and the family associated with it. All the staff here were very friendly, and accommodating. I would definitely recommend going here to learn some hamilton history, and it's a great tour.

Great experience, and I definitely remember visiting when in Hamilton. Only guided tours are allowed, so you can't go into the Castle on your own. But worth it. The tour takes about an hour and 20 mins. Very fun. We had a wonderful guide. The Castle has an interesting history, and lots of character. Our group was small, which I learned later we were lucky to have. Our friends had 12 in their group, and they said it was too crowded. We had 8, including 3 kids. Perfect size. I recommend checking if the kitchen is open, because it generally is and you get to taste some yummy things prepared in the Castle kitchen from old recipes. We all enjoyed the tour. I honestly recommend it.

Great day trip for family. Affordable tour that includes a kitchen demo. Staff are in period attire . Military museum and interesting kitchen garden that lets you smell and taste some fruits and herbs. Kids had fun playing in the military room and trying military clothes on the first floor. Great location for photoshoots. Saw some doing engagement shoots.

Been coming here since I was very little. Not much has changed 😅. Beautiful neoclassical/ renaissance Italianate architecture really captures the early 1800s. A beautiful historic landmark for Hamilton and Ontario. The grounds are lovely to walk around too. Just wished they would clear some bush looking out to the lake.

Great place for history lover to visit. You would understand how things worked back then and technically it was built before Canada became a country officially so it will give you a different perspective about life back then. Overall a great historical site and tour guide was really helpful.

Great History and brilliant architecture. During Christmas time the Castle is even grander. We went on the first day of Victorian Christmas in the month of November when it is a free tour. Rest of the times it's a paid tour.

Visit to the castle was beyond my expectation! The guide was very knowledgeable and thoroughly explained MacNab’s family and every room, design and details in the mansion. A must visit if you’re in Hamilton. I brought my kids (5, 8, 9) with me and they also loved it!

The master bedrooms were under construction and empty I wish they advertised this because that was my favorite part and I wouldn't have wasted 1.5 hrs driving there and paying almost 30 for 2 tickets not knowing until the very end that they're not included. Very sad. Also the guide kept mentioning a film that took place a few days or a week ago so rooms were very empty and not decorated the way they should have been:( tickets should have been discounted or make it accurate before people arrive.

This is an interesting place to visit. There are so many rooms to see and history to think about. The only reason I'm giving it only 4 stars is because the group is pretty big for the size of most of the rooms. For us, we had this group of 5 who thought it was their own personal tour. So they would take their time looking at the rooms and taking pictures while the rest of us would have to wait. Then the tour guide would start explaining the room before everyone was in. I would definitely recommend visiting.

I love it there. I take my kids often. There are paved paths that go around the entire property, and circles around the park. My son learned to ride his bike on them this passed summer. Its covered in big beautiful trees,,that provide lots of shade in the summer. Great place to spend the day and have a picnic. Fantastic scenery for taking family picture's or of your kids, and a very popular location for wedding photos. The lookout is the best place to watch fire works. It looks right over the Hamilton Bay and perfect place to watch the sun rise over the Sky way bridge. Dundurn Castle is an awesome spot for walking your dog or just going for walks or jogs or even yoga on your own or with friends. Definitely one of my favorite spots to go in Hamilton and would recommend it to anyone.

Dundurn Castle is one of my favourite parks to go to. Beautiful castle with a breathtaking story. I would definitely suggest taking a tour, and it is very educational and cool to walk around inside They got a lovely garden on the side as well that opens to the public in a fall

I’m a few weeks behind writing this review, but better late than never! I LOVE this place. I learned a lot during the tour - props to our tour guide - and visualizing what life was like in the castle. The architecture, the design, the details… Amazing. It’s definitely worth a visit here.

Not a castle, but a well maintained mansion built in the 1830’s. The 1 hour tour was really interesting and the guide was very knowledgeable. The grounds are beautiful and it is worth viewing the gardens.
