This museum is a perfect place to go, it doesn’t matter if you are young or if you are older. It has all the history of all the games we’ve been using growing up. The museum is super clean and organized. It has a lot of activities that you can do including the observatory and the ticket machines that you can play on. I’ve been there twice and I really enjoyed the college nights they would do. It was amazing to learn and enjoy it with people from your school or same age.

I probably don't have more to add then what has already been said, but if you're still wondering whether or not to visit the Strong National Museum of Play, just know you can stop now. This museum is truly a one of a kind travel experience, perfect for all ages. Just be prepared to stay all day if you can!

We visited the museum on a weekday, and the number of people there was very manageable as a result. Although some areas did get busy and chaotic, I'm sure it's much worse on weekends, summer holidays, and the like. There was a ton to see and do for all ages, with a lot of interactive exhibits and informative displays. We've been to other children's museums in other cities, and this is probably the biggest. We spent the full day there with kids ranging from 2 to 11 years old, and if there was more time, I'm sure they could've stayed longer. Rides like the train and carousel are extra (but only $1 per person), as are the butterfly exhibit and the rope course. For the most part, the different areas were organized and kept in order, despite showing some signs of age and wear and tear. They also have plenty of seating for people to take a rest, as well as a restaurant, cafe, and food court on site. Re-entry within the same day is possible I'd you get a stamp, and paid lockers ($5 for a jumbo one and $4 for a large one) are available roo. Parking was housed in the multilevel parking structure outside and costs $5 for non-member museum guests. Overall, definitely worth a stop if you're in Rochester with kids or if you're a fan of toys, books/comics, and games (board games, video games, pinball machines, etc.).

This place is amazing. For most of us with kids it’s basically the largest indoor playground you will ever go to. There’s so much in here for the kids to play with and it’s not that busy. Despite all the kids in here it is still kept tidy and the activity areas are reasonably organized. They have a free coat check area which is very convenient. The gift shop is rather small and most contains your classic board games and some legos. Food court is pretty reasonable. The butterfly conservatory isn’t worth visiting but the rope climb is amazing. Just make sure your kids are brave enough to do it. The rest of the place is actually a museum of play. The toy displays they have on the second floor really brings out the nostalgia. The cost to play the arcade games is pretty reasonable too. I didn’t think this would be somewhere I would go visit again but I definitely want to come back someday.

We've been members in the past and rejoined now that my son is a little older as the museum has the best selection of arcade and pinball games in town. Great to bring him and a friend to play some games, learn a few things, and see the butterfly room, which is a highly recommended experience. The ropes course adds a whole new dimension and completes the incredible value. My only complaint is they need to fill the food court with more options. The vacancy is glaring.

Great spot for kids and adults. Had a 3yr old and 8yr old. They loved it. Games stuff, play stuff, stories and reading. We enjoyed it as well. Butterfly observatory seems a little out of place but was a small extra and worth it. High ropes was likely the highlight for our 8yr. I did it as well and very impressed... Didn't have the nerve for all the high route options.

The Strong National Museum of Play was a great experience. There was so much to see and do that we would need to come back a second day to experience everything. From the historical aspects, to the huge playgrounds and memories, it was a wonderful experience for my small family. The only part that was disappointing was that the arcade section cost additional money after the entry fee. I suppose all the machines were historical and only took quarters, but it was still disappointing. Overall though, I would definitely return and finish exploring and playing with my family.

Fabulous place for a day full of fun. My son is 13 and we visited for his 9 year old cousin's birthday party. We didn't think he'd have much to do, but he spent hours here. Something for everyone. Rochester is truly fortunate to have such a place locally. Family friendly. Restaurants on site.

Incredible museum of play for kids of all ages. We got the family year pass which has already paid for itself. We love coming here just as much as the kids. So much to see and do that it never gets boring. You definitely need at least two or three four hour visits to work through the entire museum and that’s at a clip. The new galleries and outdoor areas are amazing. We love in particular the new video game and avatar halls, where you could easily spent a day itself exploring.

Give yourself more than two hours to explore, especially if you have a kid with you. I know we missed a few exhibits near closing time because we spent so much time in other spots. I'd also like to add that when my four year old took off into another spot while our backs were turned, staff was super helpful in locating him quickly and without panicking. Literally, it was less than two minutes and they had helped us find him, and were super nice about it. We are already making plans to visit again next summer! My only complaint seems to be a temporary one. Due to construction along the outside of the building, the entrance was not clear to us so we had to walk the whole way around the building and then through the parking garage. We also hadn't been able to figure out how to drive into the parking garage so we parked on the street. Hopefully this will be resolved once they finish their updates.

I love to visit the Academy of Sciences! I hit up the planetarium first to get my ticket and then visit the ground floor while I'm waiting. The show never disappoints! I then enjoy walking through the butterfly rainforest exhibit- so unique and beautiful butterflies that you would rarely see in a public place. Finishing up I head downstairs to visit the aquarium and if I get lucky, see the feeding of fish, penguins and other marine life! Their cafe has a large selection of delicious food that has something for everyone. I almost forgot, go to the living roof to visit the plants and insects on top of the building. You should allow for a whole day to get the best of the Academy! And don't forget to stop and say goodbye to the albino alligator on the main level!

One of the best museums you can ever visit. Definitely a must go if you’re in Rochester. Lots to see and do. Suitable for all ages. Be prepared to spend the entire day here or at least 4 hours. Staffs are very adult and children friendly. Many fun activities that you can do here as well as learning about the history of games and toys of all kinds. Ticket is fairly priced and they have seasonal member pass for the year.

Me my husband and our at the time 16 month old baby had the time of our lives. As an adult we forget what play time is and what brings us joy to our life. We had such an amazing time being reminded of all the fun I had with all the toys I was spoiled to get and never appreciated. This is definitely pack a snack bring food for the kids cause this is definitely a whole day event. We spent 5 hours just playing before our kiddo couldn't take it no more. The butterfly room is beautiful but it's not worth it but I'm not mad I spent money just wish it was bigger for the cost. Good tips 1 Bring the small stroller just for naps, holding bags, coats etc 2 Wear good socks We had on grip socks 3 Dress down and be comfy 4 Bring money not for tickets but for games and you can bring quarters

The Strong Museum of Play is such a unique place to spend the day. My husband and I visited and spent about three hours circulating all of the really cool exhibits. There were so many interactive things to do. We especially loved the video game section and seeing the history of video games. There are lots of things for kids to do and it's a great place for the whole family. The adults can reminisce on their childhood. We enjoyed seeing so many familiar toys in the hall of fame. We skipped the butterfly exhibit because I had been there previously. For all of the things to do, the price is reasonable. I would highly recommend visiting!

I had a blast visiting this museum. It's fun for kids and adults. I spent most of my time in the pinball and arcade room. They have every game you can possibly think of and you're able to play them all! (some require you to buy tokens in order to play them). Definitely worth checking out if you're in the Rochester area and looking for a fun museum day.

My family is based in Toronto, Canada and we really enjoyed our trip here. We got a seasons pass and gave ourselves two days to go through the museum. You can definitely do it in one but thought it might be easier with our 2 and 5 year old. There were so many interactive exhibits that are both nostalgic to parents and enticing for the kids. I loved how clean everything was and pacing and spacing of exhibits didn’t feel cluttered. Compared to visits to the Ontario Science Centre, which I find easy to feel overwhelmed and overstimmed quickly, the play museum was quite the opposite. Definitely recommend going back to again!

We have not been here in a few years, a few things have changed. Theres a parking garage now, but there are many easy to understand directions everywhere. Also the place was spotless! There were staff members everywhere, and everything was cleaned constantly. There was not 1 point where we felt uncomfortable! And there were plenty of sanitizer stands everywhere. It was not to packed and everything was just wonderful... it was a bright light during these dark times. I would definitely recommend a trip here to anyone with young children! And don't forget the butterfly sanctuary, an absolute must!! Finally I must recommend that you stop in at there website to check out the current offers, and discounts... I hope this has been helpful. God bless!

What an amazing venue! We got there early and had the whole place to ourselves for the first couple hours. The video game history is on point, and the pay to play video games and pinball are a ton of fun. They have a bunch of bill changers on hand that dispense tokens (not quarters) for easy access to play the games

I know covid times are weird but this was definitely worth stepping out for. You can go 9-12 or 1-4 to go explore. Some exhibts are closed down but most are open. They have plenty of crafts and entertainment for the kids. The facility is very clean. They had staff constantly walking around wiping things down. Plenty of hand sanitizer to make your hands go dry! There weren't that many people around so you should be able to see everything in the alotted time. Have fun exploring!

We had a blast there! Kids loved every moment. There are areas like the arcade that require tokens which are 4/$1. They have a food court in there but only one restaurant and the ice cream shop were open. Bill Grey's is also in there. Can't wait to see what happens when they finish their expansion. Will definitely be going again.

Butterfly garden is definitely worth it. So much more than just butterflies, and the controlled environment is really cool. Please don't let your kids run around unsupervised though. Its dangerous. As for the rest of the museum, WOW! So much to do and so much to see here! We spent nearly the entire day here and I dont think we even saw everything. All the exhibits are so fun and interactive. It was like walking into a segment of my childhood. I thoroughly enjoyed the sesame Street exhibit and particularly Elmo's room! There's a dizzy sideways room that's a lot of fun as well. Just so many activities to do and see! Don't hesitate, just go!

My 16 month old was exhausted after a fun day at the museum. There are plenty of designated toddler areas to play. Many employees walk around sanitizing toys and surfaces between play. There is a cute cafe to buy food, but we packed some snacks. We spent about 3 hours here exploring and playing! Wegmans is always a big hit for the kids. I recommend bringing quarters for the arcade games.

This is probably the only reason you visit Rochester. The museum is getting bigger and better compared to last time we visit. I think best age to come is 6 to 13 but parents enjoy the visit too. Make sure you buy ticket online to save 2 dollar and there is a 5 dollar parking cost.

The Strong National Museum of Play is a fantastic place for children of all ages. We enjoyed looking at the displays of toys through the ages, especially, those from our childhood. There are so many different areas for interactive play. The butterfly garden is a beautiful space for those who enjoy plants and watching butterflies. The museum also has different food options on site, a nice gift shop, and the cleanest restrooms.

I've never been here before and it was pretty cool. My 3 year old absolutely loved it, I had to drag her out of there when it was time to go since we live an hour and a half away. It was pretty cool to see some of the museum exhibits but I was disappointed to find out that my girlfriend and I were charged just the same to watch my daughter run around. $75 for a few hours of my daughter playing was a bit steep I feel. Adults should be charged less I think but that's just my opinion. All in all it was a fun experience and I'm certain my daughter will make me bring her again.

This museum is for children, adults and older adults. There is something for everyone. Driving from Toronto, it was just over 3 hours (an easy drive). Be prepared to stay all day. There are lot of hands-on activities and it is great seeing all of the toys we grew up with and recent ones as well.

It has been over a decade since I last visited the Strong Museum of Play and boy….. have things changed. Nearly the entire interior of the building has changed. While you still have the iconic Sesame Street, mini-WEGMANS and Fantasyland, the second floor has gone through a massive transformation. While it was once a quiet area for toy displays, it has now become an arcade that can be enjoyed by everyone, and not just kids. While there are still historic toy displays, the major attraction I would say now are the retro games and can be played with tokens. Shooting games, racing games, the old games you would find in the back of the bowling alley kind of games. In addition to the arcade you also have a video gaming experience where you can create your own avatar and play games with a wristband that activates each game. The butterfly exhibit is still there but it will cost extra to see with in addition to general admission. I have to appreciate that it no longer gives the vibe of a kids museum, I think that this museum is now one that everyone can enjoy in equal amounts.

Nice place to spend a 'WHOLE DAY'. We didn't know that but it ended up being a long nice trip. We didn't end up visiting all the places inside, but a good one for the kids with some hands on learning for the little ones! Grocery Shopping, Butterfly zoo, rock climbing simulation and a slew of others things to do! Definitely a must do if you have young kids and please plan for a full day! :)

Usually have a great time , we are members; but my pregnant wife's nice brand name long coat was stolen from the coat rack on our presidents day visit. Seemed slightly crowded compared to normal, please hire a coat attendant so others days won't be ruined like ours. What a poor way to end an otherwise great day.

Love the place. Covid protocols seem pretty legit. The food vendors are not currently open and I feel like they could set up a food ordering system. We come from Syracuse so packing lunches is not hard but an inconvenience I'd like to do without. Still a great experience and glad they are taking a common sense approach to staying open in the age of the pandemic.

This is a great place for kids of all ages from toddler to teenager. While many of the activities are geared towards kids 10 and under, there are others that can definitely entertain and interest tweens and teens. Currently, some of the exhibits are different from the past due to COVID restrictions. For example, many of the dress-up costumes and play accessories are not out, but the play food in multiple play areas is available to play with. Staff are regularly wiping down materials, and the Wegmans exhibit does close periodically for the staff to disinfect everything. This means that a line outside of the Wegmans play area on a Saturday is inevitable. Credit/debit cards can be used for everything--carousel, train, and tokens for the gaming areas. You can bring in outside food, but you cannot eat it in the exhibit areas. There are tables and chairs set-up in the atrium near the carousel/Bill Gray's. There's also a small concession area where you can buy water, some sodas, cotton candy, chips/pretzels, and cookies. There are also multiple coat racks near the Adventureland area to hang up coats, and some people did leave backpacks. Everyone is masked, but even with limiting guests, it still felt like a busy Saturday. Also, there are signs outside of the exhibits specifying how many people are permitted in the areas, but this is not adhered to. However, this is a great place to visit for the day. The staff are very kind and helpful, and they're also good about ensuring things are cleaned, as well as that visitors are wearing masks and wearing them correctly (over nose and mouth).

Spectacular..not too busy on Sat., 1/9/21. My grandkids, ages 10 and 4, loved it. I think the extra $8.00 we paid for 4 ($32 total extra) to go into butterfly room, was excessive. Very interesting and fun. But it should be less, I felt. Otherwise, the whole day was great! They do a superb job. My grandkid's favorite was shopping and ringing up their own groceries, at the mini Wegmans!!

I guess when a place says that they are operating at 25% capacity..you don't expect it to be packed to the gills. I couldn't breathe. There were 100s of people in every single piece of the museum. Because of this and covid...I wont be back. Felt bad for the staff ....and there was no physical way to clean and sterilize things after each use if you are the type of person who is overly concerned with that. When I emailed the museum a week in advance to ask if things were closed they said no...but a ton of objects were removed. It was way too crowded for me.

Great museum for kids of all ages to explore and learn and play! Cons: butterly room way too small for them to be charging extra for it. Parking now costs $5 because of the parking garage, it used to be free to park on-site.

Was not impressed. Very expensive, in almost every play spot items were taken away due to Covid but in maybe 2 areas there were play food. Makes no sense, plus having to stand in line just to do something. They should really drop the price if they are not willing to give the full experience of it. Won't be going back

Seriously worth getting the family pass. There is an unending amount of things to do and learn. Went for 4hours and I didn't get to half of everything. I may have taken the kids, but I have to admit that I want to go back for me. Fun for every family member, even sullen teenagers.

Family adventure!! We had such a blast here for our daughters birthday! This is such a great place to take your children or grandchildren. Staff was super friendly. There is so much to do and so many amazing things the kids will love and enjoy, including an entire arcade!! Highly Recommend!!!!!!!

In August of 2016, my daughter and I went to the Strong Museum in Rochester, New York. It was one of the most unique and fun experiences I have ever had at a museum. The museum was started by Margaret Woodbury Strong who was an avid collector. Due to her parent’s wealth, she traveled the world at a very young age and collected toys from all over. Her parents were also devoted to visiting museums and so grew young Margret’s admiration for them. It was her tragic past, however, that led her to become a veracious collector. After daughter died at age 24 and her husband just 12 years later, she began to dedicate herself to collecting. She collected over 27,000 dolls and many other items related to play time. I recommend a trip to see the vast and growing collection.

This place is an absolute must visit if you are in the area (and even if you're not, make the trip!) The exhibits are well put together and the collection of toys from over the decades is a fascinating nostalgic and educational trip. The interactive exhibits are even better and really bring out the kid in everyone. I can't help but get right in there and play with the kiddos. Make sure to get some tokens and play the pinball and arcade games. That alone is worth the cost of admission to me and I could play there for hours on just a few bucks because most of the games are only a quarter. It can get busy so try to go on off times to get the most out of the experience.

Plan to spend the whole day! I recommend buying tickets in advance online in order to skip standing in multiple lines to get in on busy days. You can purchase the butterfly room and rope course tickets all as one digital ticket. For older kids, plan to bring dollar bills to change into tokens for all the different arcade games throughout the museum. The carousel is card only (no cash) and $1 per ride. Be sure to bring your parking voucher inside and use the kiosk at the museum to pay the $5 parking fee before leaving. The museum has something for all ages: nostalgic adults, active children, creative children, imaginative children, etc. I brought three kids: 10, 9, 7 by myself; which was very difficult to let them all play and keep a close eye on them. Be sure to have a meeting spot and instructions to ask staff for help (I wish the staff shirts were a brighter color to make them easier to spot). We spent 4 hours here; our feet were tired! There is food on site, but I recommend a cooler backpack with drinks/snacks. There is a free coat room when you first get inside, but I would recommend a stroller Or wagon if you are bringing small children. Thank goodness there were lots of comfortable places to sit and rest.

Absolutely love this place. The arcade and video game section upstairs is a great interactive display with all komds of nostalgia feels. This national museum is a jewel in Rochester really and helping revitalize downtown core.

This place was wonderful, and has something for all ages. It was fairly easy to get to from Southern Ontario and we paid including parking and two passes to the "sky walk" around 90 usd. I personally loved the 80s era arcade, anyone who enjoyed arcades back then will not be disappointed. My boys had a great time too. We arrived just after opening on a Saturday and didn't wait long, it did get busy fast especially the sky walk so I would recommend arriving before 11.

This was a wonderful day with my family. Our 5 and 3 year olds had a great time. Many age appropriate things for them but older kids would definitely enjoy too. Seems like you can bring your own food.

WHAT AN EXPERIENCE! Could have easily spent days playing, reading, interacting, exploring. Amazing exhibits, beautiful curation, so much fun! First time visiting from out of state and apparently The Strong had just reopened with new exhibits in advance of July 4th. Parking garage was $5 for the day, and there's metered parking on the street. Nice variety of dining options in the food court that appeased all our picky eaters. Exhibits for boys and girls of pretty much all ages, adults included. Only critique, wished the gift shop had more (relatively limited t-shirt and toy options). Still, we spent hours there and wanted to spend hours more. Can't wait for an opportunity to go back.

We visited on July 5th. Pricing was reasonable and I was even given a student discount. Both my kids and myself had an amazing time. We visited for 5 hours and could have easily stayed for almost double that. Although it is predominately a museum for kids there are plenty of things for adults to enjoy. There is plenty of nastalgia and childhood memories here; from the History of Toys, to the multiple arcades (including pinball), and the comic book hero section. All of us loved to the newly added (June 30th) Electronic Gaming Area. They even have a giant playable classic Donkey Kong. If you are ever visiting or passing by Rochester, I highly recommend visiting the Strong. I know we will definitely be back.

This place is beyond cool and HUGE. I’m from Houston and this blows our Children’s Museum out of the park. We spent an entire day here, it just keeps going and going. Great for all ages but 5-12 will have the most fun everywhere.

This is a must for all families. Stopped in here on a road trip and wow! This was my favourite part of the whole trip. So much to see and do for the whole family. It was on the busy side but there was never a wait. Kids had an absolute blast (and so did we). You can bring food in but there are also several food options available. We got food at the diner. Wait time there was about 15 mins but the food was fantastic and reasonably priced for a large attraction like this. I will definitely be recommending this to everyone I know!

This place is an absolute wonderland for kids and so much fun. You need at least two hours to see everything. If you go on the first Friday of the month, the entry fee is half price. The main entrance can be hard to find if you approach the building from the opposite side that has the stained glass feature. There is no signage to guide you to the front and it is a huge building. Over all it is a great place.

So much fun even for ~20 year olds! Truly all aspects of play from video games, board games, and toys, with cool historical facts. Lots of interactive activities and old school video games (arcade and pinball) that only cost 50 cents to play with machines to convert money into tokens (including cards with no fee and as low as $1). Butterfly garden was so cute! So much to see in there. Did not do rope course as one member wore crocs which are not considered close toed, but was relieved as the course is open above the food court area.

Easily the best museum I have ever been to. I want to go back without the kids just for me. The ropes course was well laid out in a small footprint. The interactions exceed every other museum. We spent 5 hours there and could have done 10 easily. My favourite was the video game Hall of Fame with arcade machines you can play for 25 cents from decades past. We didn't even get to some sections. Even the areas which are just ads for toy brands like the Hasbro garden are fun. Every age will have fun. Don't think, just go.

Not what I expected! This place is so much fun, for all ages! All kinds of games and it is also very interactive. Our entire family had a blast. We even did the skyline climb and it was very challenging. We parked on the street which had metered parking. My favorite part was the mini Wegmans grocery store where kids/adults can pretend to be shoppers or cashiers. So cute! Loved this place.

My friend and I made a short drive in from Ontario and thoroughly enjoyed this museum. So many amazing displays, friendly staff, and a lot of interactive exhibits. I visited specifically for the video game content and was not disappointed. I'd like to visit again soon as it is a very fun nostalgia trip.

For any kids 10 & younger this place has something for everyone. For parents, it's a long day... haha. I would suggest multiple trips as it's hard to do everything in 1 day with younger kids. There's just so much to do & see. The Skyline for above 48" is awesome. Do it! Under 48" is extremely small. Maybe for 2 -4 yrs. Video games are only 25 cents which is very reasonable. Approx 1.5 hrs from the boarder.

Amazing experience. I had as much fun as my grand daughter! Staff were helpful and very pleasant. There are so many activities. I highly suggest going as early as possible. I was impressed with the technology. I loved the scanner that actually transferred the fish we colored onto the water scene that was projected onto the wall and “animated” them. Yes, our fish were actually swimming!

A museum that will really appeal to the child in all of us. Strong museum of play Date of Visit: Fri July 7 A museum that will really appeal to the child in all of us. Let your inner child loose, and play till your hearts content at the Strong Museum of play in Rochester NY. The Strong is dedicated to the art & joy of play. Everything you can think of related to toys, games, playthings, books, and childhood memories is here for you to enjoy. They have exhibits from the origin of toys, right up to the most recent toys. You will enjoy the trip down memory lane as you go through the many displays and interactive exhibits featuring the toys and toy brands you love. The Hall of fame features the best toys throughout history. Every year new toys are inducted and places on their hall of fame. There is a great video game section where you can enjoy playing all the video arcade games you have grown up with. Over the last few years they have renovated and expanded – and the new additions include a “level Up” interactive digital game world, “High Score” the video game history museum, and the Hasbro Game Park – which features giant versions of classic Hasbro games – Simon, Monopoly, candyland, Jenga, etc. The Museum is huge, and so much fun. The photo opportunities, the interactive exhibits, the giant characters, and the various play structures, will keep you busy for hours. Tips for visitors: There is so much to see and do here, you will want to plan several hours to spend here. There is a carrousel in the main entrance – and a diner to grab something to eat. There is plenty of parking in their parking garage. The museum is a big attraction for families with children, and on weekends and holidays – it will be packed with children running around. We visited on a Saturday and it was extremely busy. The last time we visited a few years ago – was a weekday afternoon – and it was not too bad. The Hasbro Game Park will be closed on Rainy days (esp if lightning) They take extra caution. Do not go late in the day – because it will take you longer to get through everything than you might think, and you wont want to miss out on things.

We had an amazing time here. The Black Doll exhibit made us cry, because it was so touching. All the characters that walked around and allowed you to take pictures with them was absolutely amazing. The entire day was amazing. Is a place to bring your whole family.

Pictures of the butterfly garden. Adventurous setting for the children. There are lots of play areas and exciting things to see. I didn't get to go to every exhibit because of the time I got there. But it is an awesome place for the family.

I would bring my kids here vs. Disneyland/world. Lots of interactive stuff for them and for anyone who grew up during the rise of video games (from Pong on) this is like a functioning shrine - working pinball machines, original video games, etc. Neat. Don't buy tickets in advance if you're a vet - they have a discount at the door.
