Owner asked us why we tipped so little (he actually hustled outside of the restaurant after we'd already left). Our meal had been fantastic up until that point, we have been before, fantastic vegan food and great atmosphere and service, so please trust me when I say the tone/demeanor of this question, though phrased politely, was interrogative and rude. Here is the story: Their policy is that they do not accept debit transactions on 7+ more people at the table, so not everyone brought enough cash (who carries cash anymore, let alone to cover $100+ meals?). I had told my party of people to bring cash for this reason but not everyone was able to get to an ATM in time. We did leave a tip with what we had - literally we were scrounging for change to cover the bill and tip, so we found this question very rude, ungrateful and just plain annoying. You can have the best vegan food in the world (which they just might have!) but as soon as you show attitude or provide bad customer service you immediately go to a 1 star rating in my books. It turned us all off from ever going back. We absolutely would have tipped more if we all had access to our funds in our debit accounts. If you want more tips, accept debit transactions on large parties. I know it saves time so you can shovel more people into your restaurant to make more money, but then you come into situations like ours and embarrass yourself and lose customers. Huge shame because it really was a great dinner.

Edited 18 April 22 Would bring down the rating to 3:5 star Highly disappointed when we went back to pick up some delicious ( in my mind, past experience) food. The Avocado Benny was on a thick piece of doughy muffin. Never make the mistake of ordering waffles for a take out. They turn into a thick lumpy dough, flavourless and a total waste. The Seitan was unappetising. Southwest hash was the only decent offerin. Wouldn’t go back again. 5 stars first experience 👇🏼 Absolutely loved Rise Above Restaurant !!! Would give more Stars if possible. Fantastic Vegan food in St Catherine’s. The service was exemplary and impeccable. Attentive, helpful and prompt. The corn chowder was so warm and heartening on a cold winter day. Soulful food. The Mac and cheese was creamy and delicious. The desserts were sinfully good. And the coffee was just perfect with refills. The wedges however could do with some more seasoning but overall an awesome place to dine. Sadly it’s so far away from downtown Toronto and would love to see it open a branch here. A great place to stop if visiting Niagara Falls. Loved their decor and such cute Salt & Pepper shakers. Each table had a different one. Loved their choice of Hand Sanitizer’s too, they smelled so good. Great Vegan Food and fantastic service!!

Sometimes the best meals come from the places you'd least expect. We passed by this place and on a whim decided to sit down and have dinner. The seitan wings, slathered in BBQ sauce and served with vegan blue cheese dip, were a hit. Followed that up with a beet burger, which tasted great and didn't have a texture like mush, like a lot of other veggie burgers. Paired that with a chickpea curry, which complemented the burger nicely. Also had a vegan wrap, dripping with cheese and coupled with a grilled peach salad that had a cashew-based crema slathered on top. Never thought I'd find myself wanting to travel all the way to St. Catharines for vegan chow, but Rise Above has definitely made me a believer.

Rise Above truly lives up to its reputation as a fan favorite. From the moment we stepped in, we were greeted by a friendly and attentive staff member who made me feel right at home. The atmosphere was simply incredible, creating a warm and inviting ambiance. The pesto grilled cheese was an absolute delight, perfectly combining the rich flavors of pesto with the comforting goodness of grilled cheese. It was a mouthwatering experience that left me craving for more. And let's not forget about the chicken wings! They were cooked to perfection, offering a tantalizing blend that was both delicious and flavorful. Overall, our visit to Rise Above was a delight. With their great dishes, excellent staff, and unforgettable atmosphere, it's no wonder why this place is beloved by fans. I highly recommend giving it a try and indulging in their scrumptious offerings. You won't be disappointed!

Wow. Such amazing service and great food! Shelby was our server and was so kind and attentive. Love being able to support a fully plant based restaurant. No complaints at all. Very positive experience. 10/10 would recommend.

Rise Above has amazing food and most of their items you can't even tell are vegan. I love their selection and consider it to be one of the best restaurants in St. Catharines. When I lived closer to downtown it was one of the restaurants I visited most frequently. They have multiple items on their menu I love and I often recommend to people. If you are looking for good food in the downtown sector this is a must visit and should be on the top of your priority list.

Savory vegan comfort food. Wow, was it surprising to try these dishes knowing they were entirely meat and dairy-free! The restaurant is doing outdoor seating so they were busy at the time, we got reservations. The staff is nice and accommodating, would get some good vegan dishes here :)

On my only day off from the grueling federal campaign, I had my sights set on Rise above for a few days. In the week leading up, I had explored some of the nearby vegan establishments on the Happy Cow app. I was delighted to discover the litany of plant-based options in the Hamilton area. It had seemed that Hamilton was perhaps in fact the vegan mecca of the golden Horseshoe. I did extensive research and was ultimately impressed by the offering of a plant-based substitute for the infamous wing. When the day finally came, I embarked on my journey in midafternoon. Being in dispossession of any motorized vehicle, the weather cooperated as I rode my bicycle 20 kilometres from my house at the top of Brant Street in Burlington. The entire journey a pedaled with a smile across my face, thinking about the delicious food I was going to have. I arrived minutes before they officially opened and was redeemed immediately. In all my years I have eaten countless vegan pizzas and vegan burgers, but the vegan wing had until this point escaped me. I ordered one order of seitan wings and waited outside while I read my book. By the time my food arrived, my previous thoughts were confirmed. There is simply nothing that plant-based can not do better than it’s animal counterpart. The seitan wings were delectable. I decided to follow up with a slice of Pizza. Again, I was reminded of the glorious future that awaits all of us, as we transition our food system to be wholly plant derived. For a moment I glanced around and realized that this had been the peak of my life, culminating over 26 years. The best part about that realization, was understanding that it will only get better. I have lived 26 years before I encountered seitan wings. Now I get to live an eternity with them. I returned home that day with a profound sense of belonging. A few weeks later there had been a mixup, where I was bestowed the custody of my sister’s CRV for one evening. Having ridden there by bicycle, I knew the way and travelled the same distance in a fraction of the time. I once again indulged in Seitan wings, Garlic bread and a slice of pizza. I have since been counting the days until I can return.

Incredibly disappointed with this place. Drove 20 minutes to eat here tonight just to be told that they're deciding to close early because of "staffing issues". I get it, covid is the standard excuse, blah blah blah, but update people on your social media! It's not rocket science at all. Quite the contrary actually. A simple post ahead of time is quite easy. Yet they decided just to post about St Patrick's day instead which conveniently they won't have " staffing issues". This place reeks of no organization, poor management and excuses (which I'm sure we'll see more replied below). But the icing on the cake is when she recommended another restaurant, looked up their menu, looked decent, only to realize they're closed too. Well done. 0/5.

I cannot believe how good the food is. We got lucky getting a table without a reservation, someone had just cancelled before we arrived, so book ahead. The Seitan wings are too good! The mushroom appetizer, I don't know how they make this but I could eat a hundred of these. Our mains were damn good too. We, and everyone around us, cleaned our plates. Would highly recommend and will definitely go back!

The food is really good..possibly some of the best vegan food I have had. However, the service could be better. They are not very courteous and could be better when serving customers. I have added their menu during Corona.

With COVID it's been awhile since I ventured out for food. Ordered from Rise Above the other night. They ran it out to my car - I didn't need to get out. Food was fantastic. Ordered wedges (love them), the philly steak sammy with kale Caesar side, ginger cookies and a haystack (love this too). I expected the cookies to be my treat for the next couple days but I found that I had enough of the entree and wedges for 2 meals. Granted the wedges are better first day but it was still a yummy lunch warmed up the next day with half the sammy. The cookies were massive and just right - chewy and spicy. Perfect.

Honestly they do best vegan wings we got sriracha lime they had the perfect amount of flavour and great texture & although they were deep fried they we not excessively oily. The mushroom caps were also a banger because they are able to make a great vegan pesto with all the flavour that’s nice & smooth. The beet salad also great. And the gnocchi although slightly mushy was made with really good ingredients (leeks, asparagus, peas). They have lots of drink options too only regret is that there was no room for dessert which just means we will be back. I also appreciated that our server although the only one working was still attentive and checked in throughout our meal. Highly recommend this place for very clean & delicious v food which I’m sure anyone would enjoy regardless if their diet.

I went here for lunch about a week ago and it was a great experience! The food is all vegan and there are a ton of gluten free options. The food was really good. I was blown away by how delicious, creative, and light the meals were. The only down side was the potato leek soup which was a bit bland. The owner was wonderful and it was a great experience. I am not vegan myself, but I would come back here again just because I enjoy the food.

Food was obviously good but the service was fantastic. Loved the service and quality of food. It was one of those service where you are embarrassed to offer 20% tip, because even that 20% will not justify the quality of service :)

Creative, fresh and delicious menu. We had the watermelon salad (surprising combination with Greek olives, grape tomatoes, red onions and cucumber), killer crunchwrap (tasty!), pesto grilled cheese sandwich (served with excellent wedges and a phenomenal dipping sauce), Philly cheesesteak (excellent), and soup with beans and coconut (great texture and flavor). The staff was friendly and efficient.

Really awesome place to go for lunch or dinner. The food tastes great and I love that most things are made in house like- their cheeses. Lots if variety to choose from. Also desserts and drinks to try as well. My favourite dish is the crispy seitan wrap. This was the first place I tried eating seitan and I'm hooked. The art is also really cute and the interior is decorated nicely.

What a fantastic experience!!! The moment we stepped into this lovely atmosphere of coolness, relaxed and super stylish, sustainable vibes - our entire family including my teenage daughter were in love ❤️!!! The food was delicious! We took potatoe wedgies with spicy mayo, artichoke salad and ginger sesame tofu salad. Let me tell you - the portions were BIG, we thought we'll take half of it with us!!! But the best thing - the ingredients were so fresh, we didn't realized we finished everything and left empty plates wanting more!!! The chef really cares about the client's experience enjoying healthy, filling and unique dining experience! Would recommend this hidden GEM to everyone!!!! Thank you Rise Above - we definitely will be back!!!! P.s. their beverage lost is unique and house white wine is superb!!!!

Disclaimer: this is a review by a non vegan diner. My girlfriend and I dined here for dinner on our anniversary night. While neither of us were vegan my girlfriend was very pro vegetarian and vegan movement and wanted us to diversify our culinary experiences so why not this wildly well reviewed vegan spot in St Catharines? We ordered the Saucy Seitan for appetizer, with sriracha line sauce. The sauce was waaaaay too salty. Combine that with the bit of heat from the sriracha, felt like I was eating chunks of salt. Texture wise it was alright. For our mains, my girlfriend had the Scallop Linguine while I had the BBQ Deluxe Burger. The linguine would've been alright had the sauce not be overly thick and dry. It made the meal feel heavier than it should've been and hard to swallow, just felt sick eating more and more of it. Hard to recommend. The burger was rather unflavourful. I'm not sure if it was because of the overly salty appetizer that killed my taste buds but I honestly could not taste anything but the bread, the onion ring, and the small drizzle of BBQ sauce. Like I see what I'm eating but I'm not tasting anything. Just a general mush. Again, cannot recommend. Along with the burger came the potato wedge supreme (wedges with some cheeze spread and sour cream replacement, and some garnish). Again flavour was rather uneventful. Taco Bell fries supreme tastes better. We were both left pretty disappointed by it all. With the overwhelmingly positive reviews (+1000 reviews!) I thought it would've left a positive impression on me, as per what a great vegan cuisine could offer. Unfortunately it wasn't the case, and I don't see myself coming back here. But hey the vegan donuts across the street were pretty damn good.

The food here is so delicious! Very friendly and warm vibe as well. I had a chickpea and carrot soup which sounds much simpler than it was. Creamy, spicy and satisfying. My friend had rotini with mushrooms and cashew cream, and I had peppermint cheesecake for dessert. A lovely experience with consistently great food. This place would be my first choice if I'm in the area again.

Excellent choice of food, nice portion sizes and friendly staff! This could have easily been a 4 or 5 star review, however a huge disappointment was they have no choice of diet pop, regular pop or cold bottle water (which is a bit bizarre for a restaurant). If you don't want a sugary flavored soda or komboucha you'll have to settle for warm tap water with your meal. Other than that, ordering take out would be the way to go here.

  • 3/5 Kyla C. 2 years ago on Google
Its weird to only give three stars cause I honestly love this restaurant, ive been going since they very first opened... lately over the last bit Ive found the quality to be really lack luster. The food is very inconsistent, one week my order is absolutely perfect and the next it is over sauced or over cooked. Like today for example I got a kale cesar salad; I asked for gluten free croutons and got the regular, and the kale was extremely watery and uneatable. But then in previous orders this has all been perfect, so its really tough to say.

MUST GO for vegans visiting Niagara Falls or the area. They were out of the mushroom appetizer when we went, so we got the seitan wings instead, and I'm so glad we did- they were some of the best vegan wings I've had, the maple garlic sauce was incredible. The mac and cheese was also very comforting and exactly what we wanted. I try to find vegan restaurants when I'm travelling and this is definitely one of my favorites and can't wait to come back to the area and go again.

  • 3/5 Karl D. 1 year ago on Google
The good: You can't get food like this anywhere. I've been three times now and the food looks and tastes unique and above average. The medium: I finally had the vegan wings on my third visit and they didn't disappoint for texture and flavour, though they could have been a little spicier and a vegan blue cheese option for side sauce would have been nice. My partner's potatoes wedges could have been crispier and needed more seasoning. She didn't finish them. The bad: it may not be fair to judge them on one bad day, but my wife and I went yesterday afternoon as a rush developed and our order got lost. We waited over an hour before it was noticed that our order got lost. We then waited over 15 minutes before I had to ask for the bill. They were very busy, but long periods of time passed where we got little to no attention. As unique as the food is, I don't imagine I'll be returning, and I don't think they'll notice.

Been eating here for years but don’t go as often since moving out of the city. Prices have gone up (naturally) however quality has gone down slightly. After eating here dozens of times, this may be the first time I leave not entirely satisfied. We ordered the Seitan wings before the mains you see in the photos. They’re usually juicier with more sauce, but were dryer than normal this time. The scramble didn’t have too much flavour and I wasn’t sold on the hollandaise (?) sauce. Chicken and waffles were good but salty. Overall, the food lacked character. From 5 to 4 stars, yet still an amazing restaurant with lovely staff and decor. Worth stopping by if you’re in downtown St. Catharines. Vegan or not, check this place out.

Amazing restaurant! The food is 100% vegan and 100% good. As a non-vegan myself, I did not feel like I was missing a single thing. I had the seitan wings and would highly recommend them. I had them with the maple garlic sauce and they were just perfect. Looking forward to trying more dishes in the future.

My family LOVES this restaurant & recommend it (highly) to everyone we know that will be in the vicinity. They actually catered our wedding back in 2015, as we wanted delicious vegan food that everyone would enjoy & trusted that they could provide that. They did not disappoint! The selection is small enough that each dish is crafted perfectly, but with enough variance that you can try something new & quality of the dishes are top-notch My absolute favourites are the stuffed mushrooms, lemon kale salad & the BBQ seitan "wings". The BBQ sauce is spoon worthy & you can purchase it separately (don't sleep on this. I put it on EVERYTHING & like dipping carrots in it, both because it's a vehicle to get the sauce into my person & because it improves everything it touches). They also have a whole selection of desserts, if that's your thing. The atmosphere is delightful; whimsical & intimate, with great art on display & a perfect spot for catching up with Loved Ones. The staff are hardworking, creative & care about their craft. All in all, a Must Try if you're in the area (& worth the time & energy to BE in the area to give this gem a go). Xo

Delicious, vegan food with lots of flavour using fresh ingredients! The service was great & the food was hearty, flavourful & hit the spot. Vegan comfort food that doesn’t rely on processed vegan foods. The pesto cashew melt sandwich was amazing dipped in their roasted red pepper soup. The Mac and cheese was SOO creamy and comforting. 10/10 would recommend! The patio is also dog friendly.

I cannot say enough good things about this place. Not only is the interior cute and cozy, with the kindest staff, but the food is absolutely delectable! I have a special fondness for the Manic Monday specials; they provide you with the opportunity to depart from the regular menu and sample one of their latest creations! My son and I always look forward to these specials, such as tempeh nachos, pizza wheels and animal fries!! In a world where vegan dining can sometimes be perceived as mundane, Rise Above stands out as a beacon of flavour and excitement!! Thank you for everything you do x

This pull apart bread was a special. Hopefully, it comes back; it was so good! We usually get the wings which are so awesome! This time I had the Sesame Ginger Bowl, which had a bit of a kick to it (for me, that is! If you like spice you will think it's mild). My dinner partner really enjoyed the Seitan Wrap. The Potato Wedges were a bit too salty, and yet we'll still order them again for sure!

Skip this place. Server were nice but manager was rude. Very unwelcoming vibe as if he was so entitled. Food is good however not worth the price. Even more unappetizing when you feel you need to be so grateful to be eating here. Nice bright interior design.

For dessert I had the Peanut Butter Blodie (peanut butter bar with chunks of fudge brownie, drizzled with chocolate and vanilla icing). The square was nice, but it needed more chunks of fudge brownie on it for a nicer flavor; there was too little of fudge brownie on my square. My spouse had a scoop of chocolate ice cream. Unfortunately the ice cream was very coarse with lots of ice crystals (freezer burn) in it. delicious

I ordered the Schnitzel & Spaetzel (crispy breadcrumb coated seitan, served with braised red cabbage and buttery herbed spaetzel, topped with sprouts and fresh lemon). The dish was very nice, the three schnitzel cutlets had good texture and went very well with the spaetzel; the cabbage helped cut through the fat and balance the dish.

Fantastic food! All four of us loved our food selection, including my non-vegan friends. The kale cesar salad, crunchwrap and wings are a must. Only downside is the lack of shade before 5pm. The heat from the sun was unbearable and there is no inside seating. It would definitely be worth investing in 2-3 umbrellas!

Love the cookies, baked goods / desserts and menu options at this reasonably priced, easy to find restaurant / art space / eatery / community - hub. The service here has been consistently excellent, the space is always fun to be in, and the take-away containers are environmentally responsible. It feels good to visit Rise Above and Brunch there on Sunday, is killer. Rise Above is easy to find as located right downtown. With St. Paul being closed to vehicles on the weekends the patio experience is exponentially increased. This place is a MUST visit! They also do take away and delivery. This place is a MUST visit!

I had the chickpea "meat" ball sandwich and a side of mac and "cheese". It was so good! My friend was skeptical, so he just ordered fries. They were a little overcooked. The atmosphere was eclectic, fresh, and clean. They had art for sale by local artists hanging on the walls. I really liked this place and will go again if I am ever in the area.

My absolute, all-time favourite vegan spot. I drive all the way from Burlington/Niagara Falls, NY for their food. Fantastic quality and great service. My dad, a non-vegan, adored their pesto grilled cheese and a part of me died and went to heaven when I tasted their spring tart. I can’t wait to try their new summer menu. Also, their brunch menu is a must try!

My only complaint would be its just always super busy, but that's a good sign because that means the food is awesome! Which it is! The mushroom app is pretty much the best app I've had... ever! All there food is great. Love comfort foods. I definitely make an effort to eat here when I'm in town and to bring non-vegans who are pleasantly surprised.

Wow, love this place. We always love going to vegan restaurants and trying different things. Rise above has delivered for sure! Both of our dishes were yummy and we basically liked the plates. Staff is friendly and helpful. We will definitely be back for more.

Great food, great location, great staff, great service. Being vegetarian, we don't have a lot of good choices and places that serve good food aren't at great locations. This one is in the downtown and has outdoor seating!! Amazing!

One of the best vegan and gluten free food joints in all of St Catharines! The food is EXCELLENT! When you order add a nanaimo bar and cheesecake to your order - I can promise you won’t be disappointed! 😍

Great place. The ice cubes were also shaped like top hats and I like things fancy. Food tasted like non vegan but was 100% vegan. I would recommend this place.

This was our first time here and to say I am blown away is an understatement. Everything about our experience was amazing from the second we walked in the door, we were warmly greeted and seated quickly. Reading the menu had all three of us drooling already! None of us are vegan and you could have had any of us fooled. The flavour of everything was overwhelming in the best way possible. I had the killer crunch wrap and the day soup, I can't remember the last time I've had a meal at a restaurant as good as the one I had for lunch today. Megan was our server and she was efficient, kind and accommodating. The unique quirky salt and pepper shakers are a nice touch.

Wow! My wife and I took our toddler and newborn here today and we felt so welcome. We were pleasantly surprised by this. However, that was just the start of our amazing experience. The food here is absolutely amazing and if you didn’t say anything about it being vegan literally no one would know it was. The charcuterie board was amazing. The Gnocchi Bolognese was so super delicious. However, the real star here is that Mac and Cheese. By far the best restaurant Mac and cheese we have ever had. It’s not even close, vegan or not, it was the best. Highly recommend this place to literally everyone.

Enjoyed this lovely little gem for the first time today, but definitely not the last. Fabulous everything!! Food (superb), service, ambiance, pricing. Will be back for SURE!

Food quality and taste and how it looked was FIVE stars. Price is fair. People who served food were nice and professional, we liked the place and will comeback. No to the part that has to be said: people do something about your second floor. Canada is still first world country, we can't slide down and become cavemen and cavewomen. If full blown reno is expensive, then maybe bring somebody for a few hours per week to refresh the place and keep it clean. Everything else was great and every time we go to Niagara will stop by to support you.

Nice and relaxed experience, also delicious. I rarely find seitan dishes at vegan restaurants, this place not only offers it in their menu but it also has the best seitan wings I've ever tried. Also make sure you try the stuffed mushrooms. You'll also find many other comfort food options, a few smoothies, coffees, ice cream. I'll definitely come back to try more

This is a treasure! It is truly awesome to pore over a full sit-down restaurant menu where every single item is vegan. Being whole food plant-based (WFPB), I felt the Beet Burger was a good option for little oil and it truly delivered, giving a panoply of textures and tastes. I also ordered the Garlic Sautéed Kale side dish (yes, it is a real option!) with the kale sautéed in water. I will visit again when I go through town. You should too!

LOVE the Mac and Cheese! They have so many gluten free options it's hard to choose, but I always go back to it! Excellent contact free service during the pandemic, so glad they're back ❤️

You need to eat here at least once in your life. So flavourful, amazing portions, great desserts. If anything, you need to get their potato wedged with the dip!!
