The museum offers a free entrance of the yard, bridge and the outside but if you want to take a tour inside to see the exhibitions then you need to pay entry fees. Keep in my that in order to enter you need to have a sanitary pass/ green pass. The outside part of the museum is amazing the first building is very modern with great photography spots and is connected with a bridge to another part that looks more of an old heritage building. The place is worth the visit is very beautiful and one of the must see in Marseille

MUCEM, is all about european cilizations and the mediterranean bassin. The outdoors of the museum are worth the visit as well as the exhibtions. Currently, a temporary exhibition about Flauber's master piece Salombo is being held. I highly recommend ! The view from the fort is breathtaking..

Really Great museum with a lot of interesting and different exhibits. The curation is quite different to most museums I have visited and I found the approach very engaging. The architecture and the buildings themselves are also well worth seeing. Tickets are reasonable for the experience. Bear in mind you don't need to buy a ticket to just visit and see the buildings and really through the whole complex.

This was a very different place than I imagined, and while I enjoyed it, I can see that the experience isn't for everyone. This is a combination of history and art that I haven't seen before. Coming from the port area, you will walk through the restored old fort and learn about the history of it as well as Marseille through interesting short videos and audio guide you can listen to on your phone. You will walk through little gardens highlighting important plants, both native and imported. In contrast, you will then walk across a high bridge into a huge, modern building that houses modern art as well as a informative look at the history of the Mediterranean through art, artifacts, maps, and more, again with audio guide accessible by phone. The juxtaposition of all these contrasts -- modern vs ancient, black steel vs stone, high tech displays in tiny rooms in the fort -- seemed odd at first. However, then I realized it is just like the Mediterranean itself: a mix of old vs new in layer upon layer that makes European cities charming and fascinating, at least to this American. If you go, realize that there is not a clear path through (likely intentionally). You have to wander and explore and discover, which we enjoyed. We spent four hours there, and didn't feel like we saw everything. If you don't speak French, you will still have a good experience as most of the audio content and many signs are in English. If you also have the Google Translate app on your phone and use it to translate the French-only signs, you will have a better experience. There is a cafe with sandwiches and salads on the bottom floor, prices about 10€. The top-floor outdoor cafe has some dishes for about 15€, and the formal restaurant ranged from 20-50€. There are lots of WCs, but not a lot of seating. On the first Sunday of each month, entry is free! On one hand, I wish there had been more about history, and less art. On the other, I couldn't have absorbed much more in one day. Net, I enjoyed it and am glad I did it, but don't think I would do it a second time unless the content changed.

Its very nice! It was surprisingly free for almost the entire thing! It has a cool food area and an area to go beside the water! There are some secret doors and tunnels too to explore! And the views are really nice!

Beautiful museum. There was a very thoughtful exhibition about gypsies in Europe. There was English translation for most of it, which I was worried about before going. But what was most impressive about the museum was more the surrounding picturesque environment. The views surrounding the museum is gorgeous, including the fort. You must go up to the fort to see the entire view of Marseille. You can see the view of the sea, as well as both famous cathedrals. The museum itself was a little disorganized in terms of the exhibits. I found myself getting confused about where to go even with an English map. There’s a very cute cafe area outside. The building itself is very interesting in contrast with the old architecture next to it.

The museum has a lovely architecture and viewpoints to Marseille and the sea. As we haven’t visited the exhibition for self I just can review these points. The roof is provided with several little gardens. A bridge brings you to the neighbor building with a fancy structure. This whole part is free of charge. Just recommendable.

Museum consisting of two adjacent buildings, one situated within the Saint Jean Fort, and another newly constructed with modern architecture. The two buildings are linked by bridges with amazing views over Marseille. These buildings can be admired with free access whereas visiting the museums is for a fee. There are usually 4 museums, a permanent one relating to mediterranean civilizations, and 3 changing museums. A must do when visiting Marseille.

Expositions extremely well designed and displayed in an engaging and easy to consume way with different types of media. The ancient part of Fort St Jean is also well designed with many outdoor spaces to admire the city. I particularly love the thought they put into the design of the icons and signs!

Checked out the Pharaon Superstar and the Connectivity (permanent exhibition) shows. Excellent narrative and thought out explanations. The permanent exhibition showcases the interconnectedness of the Mediterranean port cities in their full complexity. It’s also quite fun to walk through the sky bridges. Great views on the city and the sea.

If you buy your tickets online, you don’t have to wait to get in. There are areas that can be accessed for free. However, I found the expositions quite informative. Thus, paying 11€ was worth it. I learned a lot about the different world maps and calendars. It’s a big museum and I wished I came earlier. Nevertheless, I recommend visiting it. 😊

The architecture and the style of the museum are really unique, especially you have to go to the rooftop (it’s fully free) and take a look around the sea. However the exhibitions itself to me were not that good. The permanent exhibition is just a lot of photos of different cities and some of the temporary ones were also nothing special. The only one I enjoyed was about fashion as they had some beautiful pieces of clothing. In the end I suggest taking a free walk around the roof and the castle without paying for exhibitions.

A very big museum with a lot of varied exhibits. The ancient fort is a wonderful setting and offers beautiful views of the port and city. The history of port is fascinating. It is told through a series of videos that demonstrate the timeline and development of the fort from ancient times to the modern era. When I visited the museum there was an art exhibit in one of the buildings on the top of the fort. It was a very moving collection on refugees and their struggles surrounding their displacement. There is an additional museum below the fort walls that is a more modern structure. Inside was another 3-4 floors of exhibits. I only had time to visit one on the Pharos of ancient Egypt. It was yet another fascinating exhibit. There were many artifacts from this time that were excellently preserved. The exhibit itself was well laid out to provide base knowledge on the Egyptian pharaohs and then expand to the cultural significance of them through the ages. The audio guide was available as a website on your smartphone and the museum provides free wifi to access it. The guide itself was informative and provided good information on certain artifacts. The guide was a little buggy and would randomly pause or exit during the audio. You can definitely spend a whole day exploring all that this museum has to offer

The castle (free part) looked good. The main museum house needs a ticket which you can purchase at a spot for 11€. We did get the tickets but ended up not visiting any of the expositions because every expotition had a huge waiting line (20-40min atleast). And there were no chairs etc, so we ended up leaving to spend time at other places. At the end of the day - if you are willing to wait in line for every exposition then buy a ticket. If not then I recommend just visiting the castle part which is for free and has great views to the city.

Very interesting and unusual building. It’s free to discover, many entrances and exits. The exhibition are changing and very interesting. Most of the exhibition explanations are available in French and in English. It’s located at a wonderful spot, close to the harbour and easy to access.

Exquisite museum! You can view certain areas entirely for free and on the roof there is a restaurant as well as a lounge area that has plenty of space and a picturesque view of the port and downwind. There is also the bridge that you can walk across to get to the garden. 10/10 LOVE!!

The design of the place is unusual and offers a very nice view on the Mediterranean sea. The various exhibitions are nice and well made. The park on the top is gorgeous and offers an excellent view on the Old Port of Marseille. One tip: go there at dusk, under a clear weather for awesome colors.

The real art is the architecture to this museum. It's interesting to walk around and take photos of the building itself and of the water, but the exhibits themselves are lacking. Little to no English translations and a lot of modern "art". Free entrance on the first Sunday of the month.

It was inaugurated by President François Hollande on June 7, 2013 while Marseille was European Capital of Culture. it is designed as a cube offering a surface area of 16,500 m2 on several levels and accommodates the museum's permanent and temporary exhibitions on two levels. It has a terrace and a panoramic restaurant. The first stone was laid by Frédéric Mitterrand, when he was Minister of Culture. the Mucem is a must in Marseille. It is located at the entrance to the port, on the J4 port pier and in Fort Saint-Jean: two places highly symbolic of the city’s current development. The restored Fort Saint-Jean (15,000 m²) is a historical monument whose origins date back to the 12th century. Connected to J4 by a high footbridge, jetty above the sea, it allows visitors to enjoy spectacular panoramas, invisible until then. The site is worth a detour during a stay in Marseille because it has many surprises in store. (Translated by Google) It was in order to participate in an architecture conference that I went for the first time to this museum; but it attracted me so much that I told myself to have to discover it entirely; the union of the old and the modern, the beautiful maritime view, the clattering of the boats which is heard in the murmur of the wind, everything is magical. A dream world that appears before your eyes to reveal all the mysteries of ancient and modern. All the nautical life around the Mediterranean is represented in the galleries of the Mucem. There you will find a whole indigenous culture which sometimes seems very well known. As you cross all the bridges erected in this land, you even find yourself in a tangle and a perpetual overlap between the past and the future, between the modern and the old, between life and death indeed.

A must go if you are in Marseille. It´s connected to the Fort Saint-Jean, so consider this while planning your visit. Just it's architecture is worth the visit, even if the available exhibitions do not thrill you. (Personally I think the Museum web site could be much better.)

(Translated by Google) Mixed opinion, of course the setting is magnificent. The panorama of the sea, the major is worth the detour. But Sound Orient is a little spoiled by precisely too much sound, the music, the explanations intermingle making understanding difficult. Pity. Dommage.

Lovely exhibitions. One permanent and at least 2 temporary. 11 euros standard price which is cheap considering how much you can end up seeing. Gives you access to MUCEM and the Fort. Lovely restaurant and café on the premises owned by a Michelin star chef. Fabulous views from the top. Definitely climb the steps and take the bridge across from Le Panier area.

The kids enjoyed Jeff Koons. But now they do not understand anymore what is art...

  • 3/5 Ruurd B. 2 years ago on Google
Exterior of the museum is very nice, interior layout was quite confusing though. Once we finally found the exhibition it wasn't super either but maybe it was just too high level art for me

Simply stunning museum. I’ve not experienced architecture quite like this before, bringing together the Vieux Port and the best in modern art. I visited when Jeff Koons’ temporary exhibition was in place. Outstanding - I won’t give much away because it’s worth seeing, feeling and believing with your own senses. The permanent exhibitions are interesting, focused on Mediterranean civilisation. I was displeased to note that the Mediterranean diet exhibition was sponsored by a French olive oil company, but overlooked it on the strength of the rest of the museum.

This museum is a landmark and it is already impressive from the outside. You can walk around it on a big floating sidewalk. The architectural structure creates breathtaking views on the marseille harbor and surroundings.

Very cool building and Koons Expo is interesting. Removing 1* cuz there are 2-5 security guards per sections who hang out, talking loudly and stay in obtrusive places blocking viewing.

Interesting Jeff Koons exhibition at the moment. The building itself is fun to explore. The signage and guiding tools can be better. Sometimes it was confusing to navigate.

Spectacular place to display art - saw the Koons exhibition that was enhanced by the web like walls of the building

The Pharoah exhibit was pretty good, and it's nice to walk around in some air conditioning on a hot day. Beautiful views of the sea.

Six spread-out exhibition areas over the old Fortress and a new museum building of interesting architecture. The permanent exhibit on Mediterranean culture is very well developed. The large current (September 2022) temporary exhibit on the Pharaos as cultural icons is great!

Stunning building, absolutely worth a visit if in Marseille. We went to the Egyptian temporary exhibition which was very nicely displayed and evolved from BC to how Pharos are part of our lives today. Really cool.

Must do whilst in Marsielle, to walk around the old buildings and then the very impressive new architectural parts was great! The museum Exhibits were very interesting but not all the info plaques were translated to English but the larger one were.

Nothing much to see here other than the Water Cosquer which is an extra ticket. Think they started with building something else rather than a Museum but ended up housing a museum in the building. Totally out of place. The La Major Cathedral just outside the museum is a much better place to visit.

Visited in May 2023. There are permanent and temporary exhibitions dedicated to different cultures. The temporary one which I visited was dedicated to Gypsies. The fact that these people are treated in Europe like native Americans in the States hit me badly... There's a huge underground parking next to the museum, 3 euros /h.

Very lovely museum. Beautifully designed. The only thing that at some point bothered me, is that at some point there were no clear signs what entrance or exit was. 😅

a beautiful museum with wide corridors and a beautiful view from the terrace towards the sea. definitely recommended to do this one if you are in Marseille.

The Mucem space is fantastic, and the layout is quite interesting. We saw an exhibit on the Romani, which was very enlightening. We wish it was more approachable by including more opportunities to understand in English. We found ourselves looking up words much of the time. Upon entering, the guard asked us to carry our day-bags in front, not on our backs, and not to take photos. After seeing the exhibit, I believe photos should be encouraged so that the message of the plight of the Romani could be better disseminated. We also saw an exhibit on the history of the Mediterranean, which didn't teach us anything really knew, and we are no experts. There were a couple more exhibits that we missed because they were not well marked, and we found ourselves wandering away.

Get your camera ready to capture postcard pictures of the Basilica and the Mediterranean Sea. I booked the ticket online the day before. I entered from Quay du Port, then followed the walkway surrounding Ford Saint John. Such a view of the Mediterranean Sea. Finally, following the steel beam, I got to the 3rd floor of the museum. I was given a sticker after my ticket had been scanned by the staff. The sticker enabled me to visit any of the exhibitions. The temporary Fashion Folklore exhibition really surprised me. I had never seen so many masterpieces of famous couturiers and haute couture houses all in one place - nearly 300 pieces from the Mucem's collections and loans from French and foreign museums. The Saint Laurent Church exit will lead you to a viewing terrace where you could get the best/unrestricted view of the Basilica. You need to go down from the viewing terrace if you want to catch a bus e.g. #60 can take you all the way up to the Basilica.

Very recognizable building near the port, a mixture of modern with history (st jean fort) and very nice set up with les expositions(just not always with English translations)

Great place to visit esp if in the area on a cruise. Amazing building. You do NOT need a ticket to walk up to the roof and over the footbridge to the old fort. The exhibitions are ok. But very contemporary and artistic. Café staff were rude and sullen but it's France right.

Zahlreiche saubere Toiletten.

If you find yourself in Marseille, and you've done any research at all, you've almost certainly encountered the MUCEM in your online travels. I know I did, and it was a top priority for us. I can say that it was well worth the time, so much so that I had to go twice. MUCEM is really a three part venue: Fort Saint-Jean, J4 and the CCR. We only spent time at the first two, so I can't really comment the CCR. However, Fort Saint-Jean was really fun to explore, and as with many spots in Marseille, the views were incroyable. You can walk in and around the fort, climb the tower or cross the unique concrete (at least I think they're concrete, whatever they are, they're really cool) walking bridges, one that takes you out of MUCEM, and one that takes you from the Fort to J4. When you take the walking bridge to J4, you land at the top of that structure, where you'll find a very nice roof top cafe/patio area (the French seem to be good at putting cafes anywhere people may wander). Of course, we took some time there to enjoy a glass of rose (when in Provence...), and rested for the next portion of our visit, the J4 facility. J4 is wonderfully designed. You can walk the entire building from the outside, getting multiple views of the port area as you descend (through the interesting lattice work that encompasses more than half of the structure). Inside they have art and cultural expositions that are interesting and informative. The price of admission was 11 euro, very reasonable considering what you get. Bottom line, if you're going to Marseille, you'd be well advised to make MUCEM a top priority.
