The
Monument
to
the
Glory
of
the
Resistance
in
Toulouse
combines
architecture,
sculpture
and
audio-visual
in
an
obvious
modernist
style.
This
place
was
inaugurated
on
August
19,
1971
for
the
27th
anniversary
of
the
liberation
of
Toulouse.
When
you
arrive,
the
eye
is
drawn
to
a
large
self-supporting
metal
structure
made
up
of
4
metal
tubes
held
by
cables
to
a
vegetated
mound.
This
sculpture
is
known
as
"The
Signal".
The
three
inclined
metal
poles
symbolize
Liberty,
Equality
and
Fraternity
on
the
verge
of
falling:
the
middle
pole,
deeply
embedded
in
a
block
of
concrete
and
pointing
towards
the
sky,
symbolizes
the
Resistance.
This
structure
therefore
evokes
the
fundamental
values
of
the
French
Republic
as
well
as
the
resistance
which
fought
to
preserve
its
values
during
the
Second
World
War.
This
sculpture
is
the
work
of
Pierre
Debeaux.
The
monument
to
the
glory
of
the
resistance
is
also
made
up
of
six
flagpoles
adorned
with
the
tricolor
flag,
steles,
and
an
incredible
semi-buried
building
whose
entrance
is
at
the
bottom
of
the
steps
leading
us
under
the
tumulus.
There
we
then
discover
a
sort
of
labyrinth
in
raw
reinforced
concrete
reminiscent
of
war
bunkers.
Fortunately
it's
not
really
a
labyrinth
but
let's
say
a
kind
of
long,
cold
path
by
its
atmosphere
which
passes
under
the
paths
to
bring
us
out
into
the
Jardin
des
Plantes
via
another
staircase.
I
thought
it
was
a
bit
like
going
through
a
concrete
evocation
of
war,
of
resistance,
to
return
to
life
in
an
idyllic
garden.
In
short,
the
Monument
to
the
Glory
of
the
Resistance
is
a
modern
work
of
art
that
serves
as
a
poignant
reminder
of
the
tragic
history
of
the
Resistance.
All
along
the
underground
route
there
are
slide
projectors
showing
images
that
are
difficult
to
understand
without
a
guide:
and
this
part
of
the
monument
is
only
accessible
on
weekends,
a
guide
is
there
to
accompany
us
to
this
place
and
introduce
us
all
the
images
and
more
broadly
the
History
of
the
Toulouse
Resistance.
I
learned
a
lot
of
things
from
listening
to
him.
For
security
reasons,
the
buried
part
of
the
monument
is
only
open
on
weekends
except
for
educational
school
trips.
I
recommend
this
place
for
memory,
knowledge
and
the
reminder
that
what
we
value
is
precious.
