I have mixed feelings about this zoo. It is clearly well kept, but many animals have very low space to stay and they go round and round and round... also, having all these slopes does not help... the zoo itself is quite small with not so many animals, but the slopes make you feel tired quickly. Probably a more flatter spot would have worked better. It also lack of a proper carpark space. It shares the carpark area with the near Newton Park which, hosting sports events during weekends, makes it very difficult to find a spot for your car.

They don't have Elephants and Rhinoceros. But what they have there are all well kept, big spaces for animals, clean areas and tried to keep them as in their natural environment as possible. I think it's not so friendly with people with wheelchair though. They were building place for Snow leopard, will definitely go back to see snow leopard.

Took my children to Wellington zoo for the first time. Great service, they all got a map and the extent of the zoo is limitless. Bug city, giraffes, penguins, monkeys, birds, bears and many seating areas, picnic tables and interactive play options for children of all ages. A great place to spend an entire day with the family.

the zoo is usually my favorite place but today was really disappointing 😞 didn't see half the animals that were supposed to be there and alot of the ones we saw were very sad looking. stopped to have some food with the kids, the hot chips were $10 so we asked how much do you get cause we had to feed 5 people. then they chucked this box (literally chucked it in front of us) so we were like sweet 2 boxes will feed all of us..............then we opened the boxes and they were 1/4 full. if you charge a ridiculous price for food there should be a good amount!!! ESPECIALLY WHEN CUSTOMERS ASK FIRST 🙄

Cute and rare animals. Nice zoo landscape and layout and flow arrangements. Toilets and pitstops are well planned. Nice place to visit with family or alone!

I went in and straight of there was some otters that were very social and then I saw a bunch of other fasanating animals like the monkeys, lions, giraffes, kangaroos and so many more cool animals. The red pandas were very cute also but in the kiwis habitat was a bit bright but I still think they lived good. Very nice zoo. I recommend to go here.

First time visiting Wellington Zoo & really enjoyed it. Hilly in parts, some great views across Wellington from the chimps enclosure. Seeing the snow leopard was amazing

I got to see so many cool animals here. I posted photos of the cool ones, especially the hugging Lemurs! Although it did make me a little bit sad to think that they are not in their original habitat, I do believe that they are well looked after by the zookeepers, carers, and vets. It's still such a beautiful place. You also get a nice view of Wellington just outside the Lion's den. Speaking of the Lion, it was a thrilling experience to hear it roar. Initially, from a distance, it didn't sound real, but why would it be fake in the first place, right?? Lol. It was amazing!! Super friendly staff and the whole place is a nice place to visit with the whole family 😇

A great experience! The new snow leopards are very cool. It takes 2-3 hours to see everything, longer if you stay for the zookeeper talks. You can hire prams which is handy for young kids. Some of the walkways are very steep, so take care if you're in a wheelchair or have kids in a pram.

My daughter 12 years old chose her birthday treat to visit Wellington Zoo. We had a lovely time visiting the animals. We listened to the Giraffes and Chimpanzee talks. Both interested and suitable for all ages and children and adults were able to ask questions.

This zoo is amazing with so many different animals I think i prefer this one over Auckland zoo or Hamilton zoo here they have lions, otter and even a sunbear. My son loved patting the sheep and I enjoyed patting the kangaroo. We went on a quite Monday and found some animals to be very friendly and social coming up close. The entrance fee was very good for the experience and the souvenir shop has a decent amount of affordable items. The staff were great too very friendly, informative and helpful.

A delightful Zoo with lots to see and do for small kids and big ones too. Lovely restaurant Rex with good choice of healthy food. Can see the zoo is well loved by staff too. Even if it’s blowing a northerly. Still well sheltered. Wheelchair and stroller accessible

What a fabulous place to visit. The zoo wasn't busy and was the prefect size for a faculty day trip. We saw almost all of the animals out and about in their enclosures including the new snow leopards. Entry fee was reasonably priced. The toilets were really well located. The cafes has delicious food. Plenty of places to stop for a snack or a rest. In the Australian enclosure the kangaroos are free roaming and one decided that my carrot I was eating looked tasty. The kangaroo hopped right up to me and took off with the last of my carrot it was funny but also a good reminder to be careful with your food at the rest spot 🤣

A must do if you have the time in wellington, it's a lovely setting with lots of space. We went in the morning and got a lot of the animals before the heat of the day. We managed to see most of the animals and got to see the new baby giraffe 🦒

Gorgeous enclosures, you can truly tell the care they give these animals is excellent. Many nice eating spots throughout, and opportunities to actually interact with the animals. Great place to bring your family, and see animals from all across the globe.

Love love love this zoo. Wow what a great experience. An otter bought me some rocks and showed me what he does with them. ❤️ The limas has tiny babies on their backs. There’s a red panda experience. Visited from Australia so the hill it’s on was a bit of a hike but 100% worth it. Great staff who work very hard at caring for the awesome creatures housed here. When you get to the top, there’s a surprise animal you’ll want to see..

Great for families on weekends and holidays. Couples are highly recommended to go on the Valentine's Day night at the zoo. Strictly R18 talks on the romantic behaviour of the animals, with options for baskets of nibbles and champagne 🥂

A decent zoo that took about 2 hours to walk/explore around with a 5 year old. The animals seem relatively happy and well cared for. Parking can be tricky as they don’t seem to have a car park. Convenient to the city.

My two tamariki (children) and I visited the Wellington Zoo for the 1st time over the weekend and we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. A highlight for us was seeing the Māori atua in the locals section as seeing these pou represented as they are with a description beside them was very awe inspiring. It was really cool to see so much Te reo Māori signs and how it has been incorporated throughout the zoo. Mīharo mahi Wellington Zoo! We stayed for the whole day. Kids said they enjoyed building a fort by Tane Mahuta, listening to the keepers talking about the animals and finding more about them and getting to see all the animals. The zoo is well maintained with clean facilities. Staff were nice and the ladies in the reception area and gift shop were very friendly and answered all the questions we asked with passion and enthusiasm which was awesome. We also had lunch at the Cafe just outside the zoo and what beautiful meals they severed by polite and friendly staff. Overall an excellent day spent at the zoo due to the attentive, friendly approach of staff and clean facilities. Thank you to all the pukumahi (hardworking) staff at the Wellington Zoo for everything that you do 💛🧡💛

We had a wonderful day at the zoo. It was a little bit rainy but i guess it kept the school holiday crowds away. We were greeted by the gibbons morning call which was awesome to see. All of the staff were wonderful especially keeper Jacob that we saw at multiple keeper talks through out the day. The enclosures were well maintained and designed. The signage was amazing and really showed how much they value all of the animals welfare.

This is a great zoo! Good layout that allows you to get very close to the animals but also keeps them safe. The animals look relaxed and happy, well taken care of. Definitely recommend this experience for any age.

The concept of creating a wild like environment for animals is what I liked the most. Animals can be watched very closely and for a few birds and animals one can walk through. We really enjoyed the walk through the kangaroo enclosure. Also we made sure not to miss on the talks( explanations given by the zoo keepers) that was scheduled. This is available at the entrance, on the map and the talk time is also published outside the enclosures. Few species in the zoo are endangered or rarely seen in the wild, like the red panda. We were lucky to spot 2 of them at the zoo, there is a red panda feeding session, that needs to be booked in advance and is a one in a lifetime experience, not to be missed. Approach to the zoo is easy as there are busses plying from the city. Zoo has ample of parking space as well. A good experience and one of the places will recommend to visit in Wellington, especially for the ones with kids. One of the coolest things to visit is the animal hospital( care center). The way it has been built provides a unique experience, as the visitors can see the operation theatre, rehabilitation center and also can ask any query from the staff there.

Had a great time exploring the zoo. Went on a weekday and it wasn’t crowded. So we could walk around at our leisure. Nice cafe at the front too. Highly recommend purchasing an experience online - but make sure you do in advance as many book out quickly. Mum gifted me a Lemur experience which was wonderful - four people can meet the two lemurs in their enclosure. The Guide was lovely and spoke so fondly about the Lemur.

The staff I have met during the few times I have gone have been friendly and knowledgeable. The animals seem to be under good care, and the path throughout the zoo is intuitive. Maps are provided. The animals are often active, and the times I have gone I have been able to see the kiwis. If you are planning to get food from the cafe be prepared to pay quite a bit. I recommend packing your own lunch.

What a day. We arrived early waiting for the 9.30am opening. It was a warm and wet Wellington morning and sadly many of the animals were sleeping in. The zoo is an animal lead space. This is animals have space to retreat away from people when they want. A bit like a reluctant teen, most of the animals were having a sleep in. Not daunted by this, miss 11 and I forged on. We took our time, the bug life is amazing, saw the most impressive Cockrell and the giraffes - majestic. About 11.30 the other animals decided it was time for food and they emerged. Very well priced, some large hills that challenged my fitness but quite doable, and an all round amazing time. Also a photo shoot with miss 11's Mr Snugglsie (toy giraffe)

Clean and enjoyable zoo walk. You will be able to do a whole tour in under 4 hours since it is a small zoo, there are also nice places to sit and eat. The meerkats and snow leopard are always nice to see, especially the meerkats because they are always out looking for the sun. (except on rainy days) The sun bear seemed happy that day and even came up closer than normal!

Well worth a visit even though our son is now 25! Everything is beautifully looked after - paths, foliage and animals. Well done all those who look after the animals.

Have been there several times now. Feel bit costly but sometimes discounted rates are good one to grab. I struggle with some of the glass enclosures due to so much of light reflections, really struggle to look through in a bright days. And if I succeed look through then definitely big struggle to take photos! I guess non reflecting glass (like the one used for mobile screens) can help I guess, but not too sure.

  • 4/5 Wei Hong L. 3 years ago on Google
It was a nice Zoo with talks throughout the day, but in terms of size and the amount of animals, I still cannot help but compare with Auckland Zoo which I think is better and bigger. With that said, it is still a good place to spend an afternoon or morning if you're in Wellington.

Really enjoyed attending the Capybara Experience last weekend. Interaction with the animals was great, keeper was very helpful and knowledgeable, and took lots of lovely photos and videos for us. Thoroughly recommend. Price also included general Zoo admittance so we enjoyed wandering for an hour or so after.

It's an amazing place. It's a small zoo (probably I'm comparing to the zoo's in Australia ! ) But it's locked smack in the city centre They have heaps of animals (kinda disappointed as we did not get to see kangaroo - hence the 4 stars). It's friendly for the kids as well - they have a farm animal area One thing we really enjoyed was the layout. My friend who's from Africa said that the Savana section reminded him of his home. The actual recreation of African houses are pretty amazing Do check it out if you are an animal lover, also if you are a student - there is student pricing!

The zoo keeper in the insect house was having a badbeard day. My excited 8year old trying to show his mum a tarantula accidently tapped on the glass while pointing. Next minute Mr badbeard day was out telling him off! Then no sooner had we walked around the corner to stop for a packet of chippies a random rooster stole a chip out of Mr 8's hand. Guess who turned up? Mr BadBeard, "don't feed the Chickens!“ bro it was my boys 8th birthday. It was his wish to go to the zoo, he was super excited until captain BadBeard turned into constable BadBeard giving out verbal tickets to children trying to have fun. That one moment spoiled the day for all of us as you didn't even have the patience to see it was one chip! One! Funny you heard that one tap though, one! Maybe you should be looking after chimps. 😕

  • 5/5 Mike W. 3 years ago on Google
A wonderful place on the outskirts of the city. There are regular talks and feeding sessions throughout the day, all included in your admission, so get there early and check the free map for details. For a really special event book ahead for a close encounter with a red panda. The food in the Mojo café at the entrance is good, but the eating options elsewhere are a bit limited. The zoo is built on a hillside, so although everywhere is wheelchair accessible, the more distant exhibits need some uphill effort.

We had a lovely time. Parking is always a challenge but worth the effort. Talks by the keepers are excellent.

Definitely what you make of it, went with a group and was slightly disappointed the first half of the trip, lack of animals to see and the cafe inside the zoo was shut, hot day and we were looking forward to a cold beverage and a bite to eat. If we knew the cafe inside was shut we would have got lunch at the entrance cafe. Second half was amazing and the trip was made with the chimpanzee close encounters with the kids.

I love the Wellington zoo! Super friendly staff and the zookeepers are really helpful and always have interesting facts on hand to make the experience more enriching. The grounds are so awesome and the habitats seem really natural and spacious for the animals. The facilities are really well done and interactive. I go there probably 3-4 times a year because their exhibitits are always changing. I especially enjoy the Australian neighbours area because its a really cool up close experience.

As always 💕 just a lovely place to walk and visit the animals

Some of the animals weren't in the mood to be outside but it was a cool experience... A really good visit

Spent a great few hours here and plan to return soon to keep exploring! Staff are all lovely, had a great chat about spiders after flagging down the Harley Morenstein look alike!

Beautiful place to stroll around. For a less steep uphill, I suggest keeping right at the otters, going past the cafe and starting at the tarantulas, red panda, cheetahs and chimpanzees. Then keeping right and going past the Australian animals, lemurs, capybaras, giraffes. Then stop for lunch at the cafe, and go right towards the tiger and sun bear. Then down past the Kea, through the farm yard and then getting to the pengiuns at around 2 - they only really come out in the late afternoon. It's then an easy stroll past the monkeys and kiwis back to the otters and the exit.

Very nice experience at Wellington Zoo but few sections were closed which was not mentioned on the website which should have been update well in advance... However, over all it was fun experience!!!

The staff here are so friendly, helpful, patient and engaging. From the moment you arrive on site, even queuing to get in doesn't feel laborious. Scanning passports was done really efficiently too. The zoo is very easy to get around, lots of things to keep everyone engaged too. The Cafe didn't have a lot of their usual stock it seemed but they were really fast and friendly with their service

Was a great afternoon! Didn't see all the animals we were hoping for, but those we did were great. Also a fan of the conservation and breeding programs they're a part of!

Great little zoo with up close exhibits and plenty of areas for kids to play. Worth it for the meerkat babies alone!

Such a wonderful zoo! So clean and well kept and the zookeepers really seem to love the animals! All the workers were so nice! Such a lovely place to walk and enjoy nature too!

It was awesome to take a walk at the zoo today. I saw heaps of animals but if you aren't into teenagers giggling and attempting to provoke animals attention probably don't go on the weekend as there were heaps today.

Parking is frustrating, thought there would be more animals. Good price though, tiger feeding was great and the giraffes pen was great, got really close to them.

Visited on Sept 2022: A wonderful place to be with kids and family. Not many animals but whatever they have, they are kept in a very good condition, they tried to make the environment as natural as possible for each species. Very green and beautiful place, well maintained. Talk about sessions are very informative, which gives a a lot of information about the animal/bird. Try to go early in the day to catch all the talk about sessions.

A wonderful place to visit especially with kids. There are lots of animals and can be seen up close. There are timings for each of the animals for talking to them, so planning accordingly would make it a better experience. Its a lot more smaller when compared to some of the other Zoo’s in the country but still a good walk into the nature.

Absolutely amazing! Way better than Auckland Zoo. Realistic pricing for entry and encounters. We chose the zoo on a whim and am so glad we did. All areas were close enough to get a decent view of the animals but also at a safe distance for them. All the staff were super friendly and happy to answer all our questions even while they were getting on with their jobs and day. So many interactive activities along the way. We were so pleased with the Lemur encounter, Cam shared so much of his knowledge and experience with us and answered all our questions, even took so many photos for us that we ran out of storage lol.

It’s a lovely zoo with loads of animals to visit. It’s a shame that we didn’t know about the animal encounter earlier, we wish so badly to pet the meerkats. With patients and absolute quietness we were able to spot the kiwi birds. Lovely place with children and caring parents around. Appreciated the guide at the chimpanzee area. She’s so knowledgeable. Thank you for the information ❤️

I don’t think the free shuttle from the hospital is promoted enough. Very convenient if taking public transport. I basically went to the “keeper’s talks” which was more likely to have the animals come to where you could see them on a cold, wet day. Also I did the black and white lemur experience. So. Soft.

Fantastic to see wild animals so well looked after so close to the city. The staff are very knowledgeable and the talks educational. Great gift shop too.

We went on a Wednesday start of spring. The sun was out but it was still cold and windy. there weren't many people visiting . The Zoo is set on an incline. There's no clear route to follow so there's alot of walking up and down hills. Not ideal for wheelchairs. Quite a steep walk for toddlers and Mums pushing strollers. Alot of enclosures under construction and limited animals to view. Don't think it was worth the entry price $27. The Banana Cafe was closed. The old Kiosk is now a reptile display. The whole atmosphere is depressing. There's nothing enjoyable about it. Even the staff look miserable. Go to Auckland Zoo it's very serene, well maintained, great cafeteria food, the animals look content in their home environment, the staff friendly, informative and encourage questions. Much nicer experience for the family.

Such a great place to visit over and over again! The kids absolutely love it. Same animals but a different experience each time. Love that there are several picnic spots throughout, we often grab a family pass and bring a packed lunch for a great day out!

Fantastic experience for the family. The animals are well cared for and staff are friendly. There are hills, and while it is wheelchair accessible it does require some fitness for the attractions at the top of the hill.

Great. Lots of cool animals. Lots of nice play zones for kids. Would of been nice to see more keepers to answer questions. Lots of cool photo ops. Snow leopards aren't always in sight. Nice zoo! Definitely recommend visiting.

Loved taking my best friends to the zoo. It was a lovely time. Only thing is we didn’t get to see some of the animals because they were either asleep or missing lol- snow leopards and cheetahs. 🐆 loved the giraffes, and keas tho. Great place to take little kids and big kids

Very cool zoo, with amazing city views. It's fairly small so you're able to see it all within about 3 hours. Lots of very cool exhibits and animals.

Wanted to share that we had an amazing time at the 1pm Meerkat Close Encounter today!! I don’t remember the name of our host but they were wonderful and answered all of our questions. They are a very valuable member of your staff. We were really impressed and will definitely come back for more close encounters in the future! Love that 10% of proceeds go to Conservation efforts. Thank you so much Wellington Zoo.
