A very well maintained museum at Chennai. You can actually see and the houses of old age from different states. We took almost 4 hours to explore the place. There is a small restaurant also with tasty food. You have different activities like mehandi, pottery, colouring etc. People were even doing photo shoot inside as it looks like a old colony. Beautiful and exciting for kids if they have interest in history. You can easily spend half of the day there if you are visiting Chennai as it is on outskirts. You have hand made craft shops also inside.

Good to visit. To start with the security guards will be quite disappointing. They force people to park the vehicles outside the premises even if they have adequate parking inside. Book in advance so that you can skip the que. It will take around 3 hrs to visit so better plan accordingly. It is quite worth to visit. It might seems simple to many but take your time to visit. Good initiative and good we support.

Really enjoyed visiting the place with my wife. Good place to spend time with family and children. You can teach about the art and architecture of South India. They also offer resorts inside the premises with food options. There are restroom facilities inside and the food items are a little bit pricey. In weekdays the entry fee is cheaper. Be careful to not touch any items as they're very old and fragile.

Very good place for visiting and spending time usefully in Chennai. It has South Indian Traditional Houses and their culture shown visually to the visitors. The food available inside are quite costly and you are also not allowed to take your own food inside. There are Art and Craft shop available inside so you can purchase some stuffs. The entrance fee for the place is Rs.175 per person.

one more praising review I suppose. Well one more wouldn't hurt either Place is easily accessible from ECR and is situated in a peaceful environment once you enter the property you will feel the difference Place is maintained clean and nice Four state heritage, culture, life style, occupation, craft, living has been portrayed as genuine as possible and this place is a golden opportunity to know about the cultural history of one's own, any number of videos or books won't give the real life experience that we will get here, a place and experience which shouldn't be missed. Amazed by the effort that has gone into collecting and recreating all these houses. 1 day will surely be not enough. Reach early and explore the houses at a slow pace Staff and administration is well organized Wheel chairs are available for use but sadly they can be used only in the pathways Certainly can't be used to get into houses With all those steps and doors Refreshments and restaurant available inside Rest rooms are clean and neat Various craft workshop and craft shops are available inside. Certainly a place that shouldn't be missed

This place shows the south Indian culture and tradition. I expected much before entering into this place, but after going in I was not much satisfied. There were houses built in ancient architecture which looked good. Many rooms and places seemed empty and has nothing inside. Good place for photography and to spend the weekend. I felt that the entry fee was high for this place. Construction was going on nearby, seems like they are building much more places to visit inside. I wish them to occupy the places that were empty. The facilities like drinking water and restroom was good.

It is one of the most popular tourist places to visit in Chennai. There is a lot to learn from the DC Heritage museum but they need to improve the overall environment. It is highly sultry with no air circulations and makes us tired. Authentic gift collections and Heritage models visit. much appreciated.

Absolutely authentic and wonderful place to see. Must see in my eyes. So fascinating how close different religions and ethnic groups embossed this country through the centuries. Wonderful art and crafts work can be seen. And lucky me I visited on a holiday so they had many attractions to see. And even the market of artist who are coming from outside to sell their products. It was absolutely amazing

Parking facility available. Ticket should be bought and for taking photos with camera and others are extra . This place is a big museum about the southern India and they have the traditional style utensils, house model built and many more for viewing . They also put short clips on stories about the culture as well for educative purpose. There’s a whole lot of craft available for purchase . Mehendi spot is there , bangle making where you and friends can get a souvenir and much more . It’s also an ideal spot for traditional shoots as the architecture is impeccable and would make for good background. They host many art as well which are too good . A play area with slide and all is also available for kids . It would be ideal to wear shoes or comfortable footwear as one may have to walk around a lot . A fun activity/spot to visit on a weekend or holiday ✨

I visited the place around 10 am on Saturday. It wasn't crowded, and I entered without waiting. The location features traditional houses representing India as a whole, along with an art museum. While the art quality is average, I noticed students on a study tour. The entrance fee is reasonable, making it a worthwhile visit if you have time in Chennai. Additionally, there are some great photo opportunities; you can capture some memorable moments here.

This is a nice place to visit They have different south indian houses that are recreated here, specifically the old style of houses . There is also an exhibition of various artists who display and sell their wares. There is a restaurant which serves some real nice hot and tasty food. Do be ready to spend a minimum of 2 hours to see the whole place. You can get various ideas if you are constructing a house . Do have a nice time and I appreciate your like and comment on this post.

One of the best places to visit in Chennai, especially if you are into arts and culture! It has been 25 years since they opened, and are still going strong, with lots of people visiting. Recently took a bunch of my students for a trip there, and all of them loved it. Got a concession in the entry price as well for the students. They found the place to be informative and beautiful.

My exploration to this place after a friend of mine recommended. Typically one can spend 3-4 hours here with visit around different state houses, understanding how people lived before modernization and history of those origin. Despite a sunny noon, the ambience inside is too good. Check out for special events around festival season. My visit in start of September had onam celebrations happening. Also there's a mixed visit of people and the experience is great. People also visit for photo shoot, students come for excursion. The place also have some stalls which sells arts and ornaments and certain unique wood/ cloth works etc which comes at a price.

It is located 25 kilometres (16 mi) to the south of Chennai. Opened to the public on 14 December 1996, the museum was founded and is being managed by the Madras Craft Foundation (MCF). Good place for a half/one day trip nearby Chennai. Those who are really interested in knowing the traditional culture it's a bliss. Kids in the range of 6-8 grade will enjoy in knowing the history. Hot days would be tough as half of the places are in open area. The care takers of each house will be selling some handmade craft and we can buy it as an encouragement and support. Few ppl who demonstrate the art will expect some monetary help and its our own wish to help. Water bottle is must and there is a restaurant inside which is decent. The only disappointment is the pottery. We bought the ticket in reception for 50rs. But the Potter will let us do a very small clay piece only which would last for 5 mins max. Make a note of the show timings for the day to avoid missing it. Overall the experience is good and worth one time visiting... Good luck.

This place is located in ECR and a half day can be spent here with family or friends. Either kids or adults everybody going to enjoy the place. The entry fee for adults is 140₹ and car parking is also available in much big space. It's such a lovely place showcasing the art and architecture of South india in a same place area. Starting from Tamil Nadu, Andhra, Karnataka and Kerela the place showed the art. The house patterns, their way of living, utensils used, dresses worn, habits if the places and many more. It's such a treat for the eyes to visit such place. Photography is also allowed and videography is chargeable. Small vendors are inside selling handmade things, household decors, few organic food items etc. Restaurant is also available so no need to worry if you get hungry while exploring the place. The restrooms are so clean and the place itself is so clean and hygiene. There were few more activities to engage the kids. Definitely a nice place and a must visit.

They charge extra for photo shoots as well. This place houses various styles of homes across South India. They have a restaurant as well. The houses in display are good and showcase the rich culture and architecture of the regions. They also have a good exhibition as well. You can plan to visit the crocodile park after this place, if you have time. There is a nice vegetarian restaurant outside the premises and it is also crowded. They also exhibit ancient equipments used by the respective community. Audio guides and pictorial guides are provided. Check event calendar for any special events. Trivandrum house was a mini replica of the palaces in travancore region. These places gives a sense of nostalgia by reminding our ancestral home. Entry fee 150 bucks per person. Additional 50 for pottery workshop. Tuesdays are holidays. Extra entry fee and more crowd on weekends. Remarkable place to spend a good afternoon with friends and family.. covers the cultural heritage of southern states in a rudimentary way.. but kudos to the minds behind erecting the exhibits to mirror the architecture of the bygone era. It feels deceivingly real. One suggestion would be to have a guided tour or people to explain the exhibits as it would add more value. The restaurant - Bekal - is a big no no. Fleecing rates and way below par quality of food.

Sea shell painting etc. You can spend hours at this place without getting bored. Has a gift centre for collectibles. Water and food is available inside.

A must visit place. Gives an in-depth knowledge about the different types of traditional houses in south india. It takes at least 4 hours to walk around and see all the places. There is lush greenery and so it was very cool and pleasant. Taking part in pottery classes was a unique experience. On weekends there is an excellent puppet show

One of the best places around Chennai to visit on Weekends. The Place is very well maintained and is very beautiful. We saw many people getting their Photoshoots done here. Do visit their craft bazaar for the art pieces around the country,Also attend the special regional performances happening there.

Visiting DakshinaChitra Heritage Museum (The Living Museum) was a unique experience. Being Architect, I always admire traditional vernacular architecture and this is a treat to eyes. I feel every architectural student should visit this place to know more about Indian culture, civilisation and traditional vernacular architecture. The Museum charges a basic entry fee but it’s worth it. You have a choice to view a small film about the culture, traditions and architecture of South India. I was lucky to meet Sharad Nambiar - Director and Anitha Pottamkulam - Director, Culture. Both of them have done and are doing amazing work. I hope and believe the local government and corporates will continue to support this initiative. We can spend entire day at this museum. The project is ongoing and I will love to visit again after few years.

Visited this place on new year 2021. Pros : Easy accessible and ample parking facility Neatly maintained(including washrooms) Very much spacious All houses will definitely gives you olden age feelings Mask is must Pottery and few other activities are really gives you how much we transformed 2 to 3 hrs easily you can kill your time Not much crowded If you are lucky, you may get a chance to visit some folk program.(New year so they arranged one) Last but not least, it's beside sangeetha veg restaurant so I don't want to comment anything more 🍴🍧🍛 Cons: 30rs for parking charges inside their own compound. Not sure about traveller van charges. If you are not anywhere related to history, then last one hour surly you will lose interest. Because no one will be there to explain what is what or no sign board to explain what we are seeing. For instance, If you Enter kerala home, there was so many small small rooms but what for they have used it you can't find. Similarly all kind of houses. So at one point you will start to feel boredom like seeing same thing without knowing actual purpose of it. Inside everything was very costly. One paper cup tea is 30rs, so you can easily calculate other rates Canteen was worst, we ordered samosa, and inside masala was smelling very badly, so we just thrown it. As I said, if you don't know what you are seeing then it's just a wall and Windows with olden days touch. So if you ask me, is it really worth for what you pay, No. Conclusion: if you visited all places in Chennai and you don't know where to go, yes you can visit here once. But if you have better plans, please carry on with that. For historians definitely it's worth.

Absolutely useless for Rs. 150 entrance fee (now on all days saying some 'Village Festival'). Understand it is a large place and they need money to upkeep. But most of the buildings are in bad shape inside, no one to talk to you about the place or even let you know there is an audio guide. Person at the ticket counter is useless - she is only looking for how much more can be billed. Nowadays, DSLR camera is common with families - for that an additional 150 has to be spent, understand if its for any professional use. I have put pictures along with this review for you to decide how bad this place is. I would suggest avoid this.

One of the best spot in Chennai to visit as a family and as a love couples. The place gives you the historical aspect of how the Indian tradition is, such as the difference in house structure of different states of India and their dressing styles, cooking utensils etcc. Museum maintains all the above-mentioned equipment in a good manner. I Suggest to visit along with children and explain them about the old Indian tradition. The only drawback which i felt bad is, the cost of the food at the restaurant which is available inside, the food cost is bit high when compared to outside and the taste also not very good when compared to the price. So better people can go and eat the snacks at another shop inside the premises.

Many activities are also available inside such as pot making, paper painting, basket making etc.... The restaurant inside dakshina Chitra is totally waste with high cost.. The food that is provided is not worth for the cost.. I suggest not to use the restaurant inside the dakshina chitra... Better to eat outside.. Hotel Sangeetha is just next to dakshina chitra way more better and good food with the right cost is available...

Good place to hangout with friends and family. Not so interesting to visit more than twice. People who love traditional touch places will definitely like it. Hidden gem of outer chennai. Atleast once a must visit place. You can try out hands on pottery, experience bullock cart ride, art and architecture, traditional and cultural dances. Take children for a history experience on local tradition. The pottery experience will be amazing, and the one who teaches is very patient and sweet. Need to walk a while and will get tired, Not suitable for elderly people. But a peaceful place overall. Amazing place for Photoshoots. In food, traditional porridge, buttermilk in combination with pickle, fry ams, salted chilli will be a cool drink for summer. Other than that very few varieties of foods available. Goo parking area. You can have a mini trip to other states through this visit. Can buy handicrafts of indian tradition.

The area with stalls was crowded with people flouting social distancing guidelines.. 5 star to the place but deducting 2 stars for 1) No temperature checks at entry ( although the thermometer was there) 2) The person who checks the tickets takes no precautions either 3) No restrictions on how many people can enter in the museum houses 4) Parking staff asks for payment only in cash although they should be using digital payments in these times..

This place I agree has the heritage of tamil nadu but few things are not in proper condition. The saree making process. It's just kept as showpiece and that too in a stale condition. Roof houses all look good. The glass showpiece making process was also good. Charging Rs.150 per head is okay but have to keep few more interesting things to keep this place alive socially.

Nice place to connect back to our ancestors way of Living. The place is an authentic place to see the old houses of 18th and 19th century found in Kerala, Tamilnadu and AP region. The museum owner (lady from US who relocated to India), went all over places to identify old house owners who want to demolish. She bought the whole house. And then systematically moved the house piece by piece to the museum. Great place to do theme based wedding photography. Must stop if you are interested to know your people and how they lived.

Defnetely worth sprending a day with friends or family, especially if you are keen on the art and architecture.

  • 5/5 Premnath P. 2 years ago on Google
This place is basically a beautifully designed ethnic art and handicraft village. It consists of several carefully recreated authentic village ambiences from India. Traditional houses from each region have been painstakingly relocated and restored and kept open to the public, complete with authentic articles of daily use. Award-winning local artistes live there and presenting their art and craft in the village. When we visited the place, there were dance and puppetry performances going on at different places, while UNESCO award-winning artisans were interacting directly with visitors, showcasing and selling their creations. It was a wonderful feeling to interact with the artistes and buy unique, exquisite hand-made art directly from them. The children had a wonderful time walking through the various traditional houses and experiencing the variety of Indian rural art forms as well. A must-see destination when visiting Chennai or Mahabalipuram. Now the price has increased. 175 per adult for entry (aug2021). South Indian house models available. Would be a different experience for City dwellers who have never been to villages. Extra programs like karagattam silambam pottery making, mehendi was there. One time visit would be worthy with Friends half a day.

Having visited Chennai for decades now, for some reason we had nt heard of the Dakshin chitra Museum. Stumbling upon it on Google maps, we decided to visit it. The museum is very well curated and gives visitors a proper idea of the lives and homestyles of the Southern Indian states. The large leafy 10 acre compund is beautiful and very well kept. The lush surroundings are stunning. Each state is represented by various styles of traditional homes and the crafts of those states are displayed inside. There are plenty of handicrafts and musical instruments to buy. Prices are inexpensive and everything one buys goes to support local artisans. I highly recommend the museum to anyone visiting chennai. It's simple and fun and informative. A quick trip through the Southern Indian states in a beautiful surrounding.

We wanted to make a visit to this place for quite some time and finally we made it on a Sunday afternoon. With summer kicking in already in March, we were afraid of the humidity and heat. But thanks to the ample amount of green cover in this campus , we were safe. If one wants to travel back in time to know how the people of our southern states evolved over time, this is the place to be. Very well maintained and informative. There are some activities for kids, elders like painting, pottery etc. We also had a chance to watch a group of students performing silambattam, karagam etc to preserve these forms of arts. Kudos to them. Overall, a nice place to relax for a day.

It is a great place if you like silence, have a historical enthusiasm, are a student, have children, or are an artist. We spend a minimum of 5 to 6 hours here on weekends. It is one of the must-visit spots on East Coast Road. The only disappointment is the restaurant inside the museum; the food does not taste good and the cost is not worth it for the quality. Apart from this, it is a wonderful museum. Go and see our old homes, enjoy taking pictures, and watch the puppet show.
