Amazing place - definitely one of the rare zoo where all animals were extremely healthy with a shiny coat of fur! You can actually see tigers, leopards, bear, wolves up close. Glad I skipped Corbett cause this was better, easier with kids and far cheaper. Only reason for 4 stars is that the zoo is on an incline. There is a lot of uphill climbing and for senior citizens and even not so fit adults, it's quite tiring. But probably the best experience in Nainital - rest is all very commercial and similar to other hill stations.

Difficult to travel, lot of exercise, recommend pram for toddlers. Try to reach in either morning or evening slot. Hard to book government shuttle, try booking in advance. A variety of animals, nice to explore, nice weather at times with mist.

One of the best zoo you will visit in town. Situated at high altitude. Two ways to reach one by stairs and other way by which you can reach by your own car. I would say do not take stairs as they are very tough. The zoo experience is very good, with loads of wildlife and extinct species. There are arrow marking for the guided way to reach every animal one by one. There is 100 rs charge for adult and 50 for children. Must visit place with children specially.

One of the best Zoo I have ever visited. The high altitude Zoo has great view of the whole Nainital. Hugh variety of animals & birds. Just Amazing. Nit suitable for elderly, because it's over high altitude and walking is steep. Fun but can get tired. Suitable timing of visit before 12:00 or after 4:00 so that you can see animals... Must visit place Also have Museum aka Information Center.

Very well maintained national zoo specially in hilly area…almost all animals are there from tiger, white tiger, birds, bear, monkey etc..very clean zoo and animals care is very good.. You can take car ride to reach zoo from Mall Road…half a day one should spend to roam around this big national zoo and watching all the animal activities along with beautiful nature around from the height.. Must visit place in Nainital..

Highly underrated zoon in Nainital I guess.. Situated on the mall road the zoo is amazing place to see closely Tigers, Leopards, Red Panda, Bear & many other wild animals. Place is on hill that's the only trouble as walking on foot is a concern for senior citizens. Overall a must visit zoo when in Nainital.

Comparatively a smaller zoo but with a good variety of high altitude animals. You won't find animals which habitat in warmer climate. The zoo is walkable for about 25 minutes from the Mall road, if you can walk uphill. Otherwise you may take a shuttle from the Mall road (chargeable), till last 150 meters, which you will anyway have to walk. Don't bring elderly or people who have trouble walking/climbing uphill. Children will definitely enjoy and you can spend some 2-3 good hours here. Has a variety of birds & deers. A couple of Royal Bengal Tiger, a few Pandas, black bear, leopard. Keep left and follow the arrows on the ground while walking. This way, you will ensure 100% completion or else you may skip out a couple of animals, if you walk haphazardly.

The zoo is situated on a hill (at height of 2100 mtr above sea level) and its a great experience walking up and down on steep slopes to see all the animals in their enclosures. There a multiple animals like tiger, bear, Tibetan wolf, leopard cat, sambar, deer etc. wide collection of birds too. The red panda is a unique animal present here. There is a cab service which takes you till the entrance of the zoo. Make sure to have water with you and enough stamina to hike through the zoo. The view from top is quite good with the Naini lake being clearly visible. There is also a temple situated on top of this zoo.

Love visiting a zoo and have been to many, from Lucknow, Delhi, Dehradun , Smithsonian National Zoological Park in Washington DC to name a few, but this high altitude zoo is by far the best. More than anything, it's the cool weather and healthy-happy looking animals that make this place worth visiting. Anyone who has seen the condition of zoo animals in Delhi's peak summer, would understand what I mean. Besides the animals, the views from this place are always magical. Hope you enjoy a trip to Nainital Zoo through these photos (from early 2000s - 2022). Do feel free to read further while I recount my early days of visiting this zoo. Still remember my school/college days when we would enter the zoo from the temple side, free of cost :) Back then, there were hardly any regulations, even the fencing was a single net. People would often get too close to the animals. Once held the tail of a Siberian tiger in my hands, while it was being fed through the small food door. Patted a leopard on the back who turned around, growled inches away from my face, as I inhaled it's horribly bad breath! I am glad all that silliness and stupidity is behind me and I am in one piece writing this! The security and safety today is top notch, and as an adult, I discourage any mischievous kids from being reckless, as I once was.

I loved this zoo, it was clean and green. It wasn’t that big and the no. of animals were less too, though it was amazing. It is located on a very high altitude. Such an amazing place to enjoy quality time with your family. It will take one or two hour to explore completely and directly proportional to your strength and stamina. Better to take a taxi that costs only 40 rupees for both side. I would suggest not to go with aged or physically disabled people.

This place is huge and most of the animals are very well maintained. The main attraction here are their majestic Bengal tigers, cheetahs and leopards. The entry fee is ₹50 per person. There are regular shuttles available for people from the market area (opposite Evelyn Hotel) from where you also have to purchase the shuttle ticket which is for ₹59 per person. It's a pick-up and drop service at the same point. One can even walk it out as it is just a 1.3 kms walk from the starting point of the lake. It is uphill, so it takes about 15-25 minutes if you keep walking continuously until you reach the zoo and it is a straight road too! Beware of the monkeys once you enter the premises of the zoo. There are not many, but one should still be cautious. The zoo opens at 10 am and closes at 4:30 pm. Make sure you go in the morning and watch the animals before it gets crowded, leading them to go back inside their dens in their respective enclosures. Overall, visiting this zoo was a great experience.

This zoo is very near from Nainital lake but at high altitude. For that, cab services are provided for both side. Ticket you will get at the base only. After reaching at the height some stiff climb is there to reach to the zoo main gate. Many mountain based birds and animals you will find here. Restaurant is also there when you exit. Zoo is clean and well maintained. Must visit.

The zoo is a little different from other zoo I have been to , it is situated in hills and timings are 10 am to 4pm. For old people it's not good because they can't walk that much. For kids and young people and who love tracking it's good 🙂

It's one of Three High Altitude zoos in India. Other 2 are in Darjeeling and Gangtok. It is built on mountain so there is lot of ascend and descend(maybe not suitable for toddlers). There are some rare animals here like Red Panda and Markhor. Overall it takes hour to visit. There is shuttle service between Mall road and Zoo which charges Rs 60/per person for to and fro journey. Ticket price for zoo is Rs100 and entry time is till 5 PM. Bags with eatables are not allowed inside which you have to deposit at gate. Closed on Thursday. Strictly follow yellow arrows painted on road or you may miss some cages. Connectivity between Mall road and zoo is not good. Be prepared to look for alternatives, you will find some people on bikes who will drop you there by charging Rs 50 per person for single side journey

Nainital Zoo is conveniently located, making it easily accessible for tourists. It offers a unique opportunity to observe and appreciate wildlife up close in a safe and well-maintained environment. Overall, Nainital Zoo is a must-visit attraction for animal lovers and nature enthusiasts. It combines the joy of encountering diverse wildlife with the importance of conservation, leaving visitors with a greater appreciation for the wonders of the natural world. but there is a red panda boards but didn't found it.

Very well maintained zoo with healthy animals & birds... The view of the city from the top is also very beautiful. But for aged people it is better to avoid to visit the zoo as it needs uphill climbing & it would be tiring & difficult for them.

Pt. G.B. Pant High Altitude Zoo in Nainital is a captivating destination that offers an immersive wildlife experience. Nestled amidst the picturesque surroundings, the zoo is home to a wide array of Himalayan animal species. The well-maintained enclosures provide a natural and comfortable habitat for the animals, allowing visitors to witness them up close. The zoo's focus on conservation and education is commendable, with informative displays and signage that enhance the understanding of these magnificent creatures. Walking through the zoo, you'll encounter rare and endangered species, including snow leopards, Himalayan black bears, and Siberian tigers. The picturesque location and the chance to observe Himalayan wildlife make Pt. G.B. Pant High Altitude Zoo a must-visit attraction for nature enthusiasts and animal lovers visiting Nainital.

Established in 1984, the Nainital Zoo is spread over an area of 4.6 hectares (11.4 acres) and is home to a variety of Himalayan fauna. The primary objective of the zoo is to conserve and breed endangered species of the region. The zoo's natural habitat setting offers a glimpse into the diverse wildlife found in the Himalayas. The zoo houses several species of animals, including snow leopards, Himalayan black bears, Siberian tigers, barking deer, Himalayan monal pheasants, Tibetan wolves, and several species of birds and reptiles. It also has a wide range of Himalayan plants and trees that are native to the region. Visitors to the Nainital Zoo can explore the various enclosures and observe the animals in their natural habitats. The zoo authorities have taken measures to ensure the well-being and comfort of the animals, providing them with spacious enclosures and veterinary care. Nainital Zoo is open to the public throughout the year, except on Mondays and national holidays. It is recommended to visit the zoo during the early morning hours to have a better chance of observing the animals actively. The scenic location of the zoo, amidst the beautiful surroundings of Nainital, makes it an ideal destination for nature and wildlife enthusiasts. Please note that the information provided above is based on the knowledge available up until September 2021, and there may have been updates or changes since then. It is advisable to check with official sources or visit the zoo's official website for the most up-to-date information before planning a visit.

The Nainital Zoo is a high- altitude zoo located on the Sher Ka Danda hill at a height of 2,100m or 6900 ft above sea level. The zoo is spread over a green area of 4.6 hectares or 11 acres. It was established in 1984 and was opened to visitors in the year 1995. The zoo was officially named as Pt. Govind Ballabh Pant High Altitude Zoo in 2002. This zoo is one of the three high altitude zoos in India, the other two being in Sikkim and Darjeeling. The entry to the zoo is paid with Rs. 50 for adults and Rs. 20 for children. There is a fee for carrying a camera as well, Rs. 25 for still camera and Rs. 200 for a professional video camera. There is no entry fee for senior citizens and differently-abled people. Also, the students are entitled to free entry on the World Environment Day, Ozone Day, Zoo Foundation Day and throughout the Wild Life Week. Very Beautiful Places Better scenery than most view points Better visit this than other so called viewpoints

It is very difficult to reach this place. There are no markings as to where to park the car and no cabs can enter the way leading up to the zoo. The only way to reach this place is but shuttle (the wait is more than 30mins during peak times) or by two wheelers. Apart from this To reach the entry you have to climb really high and zoo is actually vertical so be prepared to hike a lot. The zoo is nicely maintained and I got to see tiger, leopard, bear.

Awesome place. As the name says its really situated at high altitude. Gather all your stamina to visit this zoo but worth visiting. Neat and clean campus well maintained throughout. You cannot take your own vehicle here so either you have to walk (climb) 1.5 km (wont recommend at all) from the mall road, or you can take a shuttle (Rs 60) that would take you up there and bring you back to the mall road ( recommended). Here are some beautiful snaps taken during my visit.

As the name suggests.. HIGH ALTITUDE ZOO.. so the only turn off is the pretty steep treck which may render the experience to couples with very small kids n elderly, quite physically challanging... But otherwise if one is heathy enough to go till the top, each n every animal cage is a pleasure to visit... All the animals come just so close to the fences that they can be Literally TOUCHED... ( Which is of course not allowed..) A decent canteen with good choice of food and a mini adventure park with some fun rides for kids available at near zoo entrance... No food stuff or drinks is available for purchase inside zoo. Overall highly recommended for a couple of hours visit. One CANNOT WALK UPTILL THE ZOO as ROAD IS EXTREMELY STEEP There is shuttle service from lake to the top at nominal charges which will take you Up n Down

Nainital Zoo offers a captivating wildlife experience, boasting a diverse array of animals that captivate visitors. However, a potential drawback is the hilly terrain, requiring extensive walking, which might pose difficulties for elderly or asthmatic individuals. The steep roads could pose a challenge to their respiratory well-being. Despite this, the zoo's vibrant collection of animals promises an enjoyable outing for those able to navigate the terrain, making it a must-visit for wildlife enthusiasts.

  • 4/5 Divyansh A. 3 years ago on Google
It is a steep 2 km trek from the mall road to reach the starting of the zoo. An alternative is the taxi service for which you would have to wait for a long time in peak season i.e. May-June-July. It's a good zoo for people who love trekking. While trekking you get to see some amazing animals. The first one you'd see is a tiger! And then a white tiger! A trek of some more distance you'd see a black bear. The best thing in this zoo is the bird section. A lots of lively birds, some you'd only find in the Himalayas! Rest assured, there's not much to see, if you really love trekking you go ahead, you might come across the Himalayan Fox, nothing much after that.

  • 5/5 Pranav P. 3 years ago on Google
Amazing place you have to reach there by 11 AM to watch the mighty Himalayas. The Maggi and tea hits different here when you sit and eat them because of the views. If you're visiting nainital you surely have to visit this place! You can rent a scooty which somewhat cost around 700 rupees and you can explore all the point's in Nainital in a day.

If you are having a plan for Nainital, then you must go to Zoo. Because here you will see all the animals. Like lion, Tiger, leopard, bear, red panda, wolf, deer and bird etc. If you are an average person, you can walk on the road from Mal Road, there is a 20-minute walk from the bottom. But if you do not like to walk more then so you can also take a cab or own car. Zoo is very big, You will enjoy a lot here and the point of view from the top will also be very good. Enjoy...

Overall experience is good. And the place is quiet peaceful. Zoo is on high altitude so people who cant walk long can take taxi which are easily available here.and here is also some restaurant here at zoo gate but they are very expensive .

  • 5/5 Kriti G. 3 years ago on Google
This zoo has some of the rare animals. It's fun to visit there. But keep in mind, as the name says, this zoo is really at high Altitude. One has to be quite fit in order to enjoy there, else you'll get tired just on reaching the main entrance. Even the distance between 2 different animals is at height. Ticket price of the zoo is ₹100. The journey starts from Hotel India at Mall Road. You'll have to take a Shuttle in order to get there. The Shuttle charges are separate from zoo. It is ₹60 for both sides.

A small zoo. Attractions include two royal bengal tigers, three panthers, a tiger, White Tibetan Wolves, some different kind of deers, bears, and a few rare birds. Be prepared to walk a lot as the terrain is high. Canteen in the vicinity is very basic but clean.

Place is very nice, the view of the city from that much height is awesome. But the main problem is that to go at that much altitude you need great stamina. Not a place to go with small children or elderly as they lack energy.

It was pretty hard to treck to the zoo, so we saw only the Royal Bengal tiger, the Leopard and the mummified ver of the Siberian tiger! Its a place not to be missed the animals are well fed! We talked to one stff in the leopard area he said the leopard is fed 6-7 KG MEAT! EVERYDAY!. But I hope rhat those animals were in a rather free zone and not in cages! But the way the leopard kept purring when the staff came said a lot of how the animals could trust them! And hence well cared.

I recommend this place for youngsters and kids. Elder people will find difficulty there as area is not plain. Apart from that zoo is beautiful. It has many rescued large jungle cats like Leopard, Gulmar, Tiger. I saw there three tiger and 5 leopard. There is bear, Red Panda and different type of deers. Reach there using shuttle that run from Mall road near India Hotel that cost was INR 50.00 per person pick and drop.

The zoo is located very near to mall road. You can get shuttle for around ₹120 (both ways). It is nice place to have some fun with family. It was better than the other zoos ( especially Delhi) I have visited. I was not having much expectations but loved the place. You can spend good 2 hours and even more if kids are with you.

  • 5/5 Chandra Prakash K. 2 years ago on Google
If you are an animal lover this place is must visit for you. Zoo is very large and have different species of animals. This zoo is open type i.e. they do not have cages, you can view the animals directly (offcourse they have mechanism for safety). White Tiger was my favourite during our visit.

  • 5/5 Divakar M. 1 year ago on Google
This is high altitude zoo and I think the best zoo in India where animals are living in natural environment. You can see all the animals easily. The zoo is very neat and clean and animals are also healthy. First time I saw white peacock in this zoo and looks very good. The other peacock was dancing when I visited. The distance from mall road is around 2 KM and this is a must visit place if you come to Nainital.

  • 5/5 Prateek G. 1 year ago on Google
The best part is the cleanliness and hygiene which you wont encounter in any of Indian Zoos. Undoubtedly the best zoo of India. The animals are visible and not hiding. The signages are good and interactive. The ticket price is low and free for kids. Red panda, tiger, leopards, and bear are the main attractions. No drinking water easily available inside. There is also a mandir, do visit it. A visit to zoo is a must in your nainital visit.

Nice zoo with many animals. And I guess this is the first zoo I had seen at such an altitude. Birds, Tiger, Wolf , Red Panda were main attractions. Arrows are marked that you need to follow inside the zoo and you are never lost. Some of the animals had wrong name board displayed outside which needs to be corrected.

Nainital Zoo, also known as Bharat Ratna Pt. Govind Ballabh Pant High Altitude Zoo, is a popular tourist attraction in Nainital, Uttarakhand, India. It is located at an altitude of 2,100 meters above sea level and is spread over an area of 4.6 hectares. The zoo was established in 1984 and is known for its collection of high altitude animals and birds. The main highlight of the zoo is its collection of Himalayan animals and birds. Visitors can see a wide variety of species, including the endangered snow leopard, Himalayan black bear, Tibetan wolf, bharal (blue sheep), and red panda. The zoo also has a large aviary that is home to several species of birds, including pheasants, parakeets, and birds of prey. One of the unique features of the Nainital Zoo is its natural habitat enclosures. The zoo has recreated the natural habitats of the animals, which allows them to live in environments that closely resemble their natural habitats. This gives visitors the opportunity to see the animals in a more natural setting and learn about their behavior and habitat requirements. So, overall this is nice place to visit with your kid. My daughter loved this place. #GBPantHighAltitudeZoo

Last time when I had visited the zoo that was a tourist season and I hadn't seen anything properly but this time as I visited during the non-tourist season only a few people were there and I had an amazing experience .... Highly recommended... One point i want to mention is that I feel some animals in the zoo are aged and van vibhag gives more attention towards them.
