This is a temple pond attatched with the sakthan thampuran museum or palace. It was totally destroyed by the careless approach of devaswam board and government towards vadakechira. And now kalyan group donated their csr fund and developed/ maintained this place so good. Government has no role in the current view of vadakechira. Boating is privided there at minimal cost. Its a quiet place to sit and relax in the evening time.

Vadakkechira the oldest big pond was built by Sri sakthan thampuran maharaja of cochin. Four ponds were build on four sides kizhakke Chira, padinjare chira, vadakke chira and the thekke chira for the requirements of water resources for agriculture and daily usage to the public. Vadakkechira is the famous land mark to Trichur city and owned by cochin devaswom. Many types of migrated birds are there in the pond and is well maintained by corporation. In the night the pond is covered with light. One of the original and beautiful spot in the city. Now the pond is full of paayal and still it keeps the beauty of nature. Everybody likes the pond.

Proud of Thrissur. Near north bus stand. Recently renewed the place. Nice place for time spending. Cool place in the town. Close to sakthan thampuran palace. Have parking spaces nearby. The evening has nice colourful lighting. We can enjoy ourselves with a pedal boat. The best time for the visitors is in the evening. #thrissur #outing #relax

It has been tastefully remodelled. It's best to go in the evening when the lights and fountain are turned on. Peddle boating is now available for both two and four ppl. There is a snack kiosk inside. With ample seating, this is a great place to spend time with family and friends.

VADAKKE CHIRA MEANS NORTH POND. 300 YEAR OLD WALLED - POND IN 2.5 ACRES, BUILD BY THE RULER SAKTHAN THAMPURAN ALONG WITH OTHER THREE PONDS IN DIFFERENT DIRECTIONS.THIS POND MET NEEDS OF ROYAL FAMILY ON PALACE SIDE (KOVILAKA KULIKKADAVU ON WEST) AND OTHER AREA USED BY LOCAL PEOPLE. ANA KADAVU IS THE PLACE WHERE TEMPLE ELEPHANTS WERE BATHED ON THE EAST. SEVERAL ATTEMPTS WERE MADE BY ORGANISATIONS AND GOVT. TO CLEAN THE POND ESPECIALLY CLEARING THE WEEDS AND WASTES. LAKHS AND LAKHS OF MONEY IS USED TO CLEAN AND REJUVENATE THE POND FROM THEN AND NOW.SADLY NOT MUCH HAS CHANGED BY THE ATTITUDE OF THE PEOPLE..........

Vadakkechira (Malayalam: വടക്കെചിറ) is one of the four oldest ponds in Thrissur city of Kerala in India. It was built by Shakthan Thampuran (1751-1805) and is one of Thrissur's famous landmarks. It is owned by Cochin Devaswom Board. Sakthan Thampuran, Maharaja of Cochin, built four ponds in Thrissur city for water management and irrigation purpose in his regime. They are Vadakkechira, Padinjarechira, Thekkechira and Kizakechira. Members of the Cochin Royal Family and priests of the Ashokeswaram Temple used to have bath at the ghats on the northern side of the pond, and the public at those on other sides. Elephants used to be bathed at ghats on the eastern side. The Kulapparas and ghats for elephants are reminiscent of 18th and 19th century architecture. A walkway is on the southern side of the pond. The re-designed pond has sculptural seats, gateways Padippuras, pools, fountains, a gallery and a rock garden. Best place to spend some time in the evening.

It was recently renovated and serves as a small recreation centre. They have cleaned the place and arranged staff. The place stil belongs to the temple. There are water fountains in the middle. In the evening, the place is lit up with colourful lights. There is a small coffee shop. Nothing fancy. The main new attraction is the boating facility available. Its not very big. But it's good to have a small place to relax in the town. It's very near vadake bus stand.

Beautiful place to spend some quality time ith ur special one... n it's in the heart of the city.. but yet so tranquil. Since its opposite to north bus stand, it makes it easily accessible to even those who choose to take public transport. Carry your favorite book if u plan to com here alone or even jus come n sit doing nothing to clear your mind.

Good place to spend time in the evenings. Not maintained well. Could spend time till evening 7:30. Its basically build around the pond. Spending quality family time wont be so difficult but there is a limited space. There are two temples adjacent to the place.. One has its aarrattukadavu in this pond. Another located on the opp side of the road.

Actually a very good place, only if the owners decide to get the pond cleaned up. A haven for flying ducks in plenty, and where one can rest and relax. But, needs urgent maintenance.

  • 2/5 Abdul G. 4 years ago on Google
It was renovated a few years back and looked awesome. But the renovation made nothing to the public and the wastes debris numbed on one side of the Pond and entrance. now the it looks horrible and the pulic cannot enter into the Vadakkechira compound. On top of that the poor maintenance led the pond looked filthy though it still attracts thousands of water birds
