Vanchikulam one of the famous historical landmarks in Trichur, located in pothole and near to railway goods shed. Very long ago more than 50 years back the pond was used for trading and business activities through the water ways connected to the pond. Agrl.produces and commodities were transported to Cochin by using the water ways connected through different small rivers and backwaters. Kettuvallam the boat driven by man power was used for this. In 2010 the pond was renovated and cleaned by Trichur corporation. Thanks to the corporation for the effort taken for cleaning and maintaining the Vanchikulam so beautiful with clean and neat. Everybody likes the place.

Once Vanchikulam was the main water transport to all parts in Kerala connecting the backwaters . 60 years back it was very active for big kettuvalams used to transport agricultural produces and spices to Cochin. Also transport boat was there to Ernakulam. Now if the water way open we can minimize air pollution to a great extend.

Old boat jetty of Trichur City. Earlier days merchants bringing their consignment through the water ways.Canals from there are till the canoli canal which connects throughout the state. This place is abandoned condition for years, now Trichur municipal corporations taken initiative to develop its charm earlier.

Behind Thrissur railway station, you go along towards the left. Soon you would come across this beautiful spot. Basically this is a place to relax and enjoy. I saw a few wall paintings here and there. A duckling springed from bottom for kids. Few benches at different areas. Plenty of places to sit. A tea place and a beautiful view. I was here at noon and, was under the shade here. There is a small open gym at the end of the left.

This is now a "karavapasu" for thrissur corporation. Every year renovation and lots of fund spoil without any use...pathetic

I have heard great stories about this place. But you can't even find any skeleton as proof right now. Elders say the place was a transport hub when water transport was the preferred choice. During shopping festival, they light up this area in respect of its past glory. To the uninitiated; the whole thing is a very narrow canal leading up to a pond. I find it extremely hard to believe this place moved goods in volume to far away places. If you still want to visit, go there and sit on the side walls and steps leading to the pond. But don't disturb women from the nearby colony of garbage collectors taking bath and washing their clothes, the only people whom the place now serve.

Currently there is no facilities available for visitors. Because it is under renewal process and lot of construction works not completed.

At first glance it looks like a field of plants surrounded by steps..... A waterbody covered by water plants all over it except a little area where people draw water daily..... "Vanchikulum" really need attention from the officials and nearby people alike..... 5*+ if it were to be cleared .... Hopefully soon

Always the pond is not cleaned and because of plastic waste materials. Government agencies should take strong decisions to maintain the natural water bodiea for future.
