Takes a bit of a drive to get to it on a gravel road but definitely worth a stop. The ruins are pretty cool and they have signs posted along the trail explaining the different spots. There's a good chance you'll have the place to yourself.

Great place to visit especially if you visited the wildlife refuge nearby as well. We did both in a day. The man who manages this site was very informative. There isn't as much to see as there is at Fort Union, but it's still an experience in itself. They have stamps here for your NPS passport! A great chance to get a rare one! The final 5 miles to the site are on a dirt road so be prepared for that!

Host was very informative and friendly. Easy gravel path goes to various signs with information on each building/remains and history. More for the history buff to appreciate versus someone looking for cool scenery.

It's a bit out of the way. When we arrived the visitor center was open. The bathrooms are clean. We te walked every path of the ruins. Not much left of any of the buildings. But what there is, is interesting to see. Some wall are still left ,but the Adobe walls are crumbling.

Don't miss this trip down history lane. Great as a stand- alone visit, but stopped here on the way to Bosque del Apache. Lots of info provided by placards throughout and by over the top helpful visitor center and park host Mark, whose Mother, it turns out, was instrumental in getting the Fort established as a landmark. Her accomplishments honored on a sign at the start of the fort tour trail. FYI visitor center is closed monday and tuesday.

A string piece of history that remind us all about the spirit of old America. We enjoyed it. Worth the driving on 4 miles of unpaved road. Small low cars like ours will add for some β€œmusic” as loose gravel will hit your underneath all the way. Nonetheless, a beautiful stop in mesmerizing New Mexico.

Worth the little effort it takes to get there on a short detour off I-25. Friendly site host and an impressive walking trail letting you interpret the old fort site.

I've never been there before. I was actually quite amazed at all the history it had. It's just sad that almost all the buildings are almost gone.. I would go back again. Part of our history of new mexico.. I recommend going..

If you are traveling along I-25 or near the Bosque del Apache this is a great stop and highly recommended. It is a short 10 minute drive off I-25 and well worth the trip. The views of the Rio Grande Valley and a nearby volcanic mesa are stunning in themselves. The trails are very well maintained and offer not only a glimpse into the history of the American West, but also some stunning vistas of the present. There are generally very few people here, and the facilities are very well maintained. There are a mix of covered and open picnic areas with tables and well maintained site built restrooms (not port-a-potties). The staff are very friendly and knowledgeable of the history of the area, and the gift shop has a well stocked collection of books.

Visitors center is closed Tues & Wed. So no chance to get our stamp, which was a bummer. But the walking trail is beautiful!

Park is open 8am to sunset, even on days when the official visitor center is closed. The site consists primarily of a few gravel trails throughout the ruins, with some signage to describe life and events at the fort. Note: the fort is approximately 4 miles off the highway on a washboard dirt road. Sedans should make it fine as long as there has not been a recent rain, but it is a bit bumpy.

The volunteer at visitor's center was very knowledgeable about the area and the history. This place was larger than we expected. Numerous ruins. There is nice clean bathroom and there are a few picnic areas.

Jeff, in the Visitor Center, shared an amazing amount of knowledge concerning the history of Fort Craig in a comfortable, air conditioned, well-stocked gift shop. Previous caretakers created a layout of the original Fort; self-guided tour on level gravel path. Restroom facilities available.

Most of the fort is gone with only a few remnants remaining. But the trail and Posts still make it an interesting visit. Interesting history to be learned of the fort and surrounding area.

πŸ‘ I was surprised how many people were at this site. I thought I was the only nerd. Anyway, it's only open one day in April, and one day in October, and there's two ways to get in. #1 is the caravan from Tularosa on the south side, #2 is the north Stallion entrance. Pro tip: the caravan is nice, you s...
