A bit tricky to find if you organise it yourself - the taxi driver needed guidance from the GPS and even then dropped me off at the wrong entrance, however once there I had an amazing experience. I was the only solo traveller that had shown up for that afternoon but was joined by a large group of German tourists after a while. The German tourists required a translator and the explaining back and forth was a slow process, so two of the girls opted to pull me aside and give me my own guided experience instead. They were absolutely lovely, and SO funny. Omg I've never met nicer people. They were around about my age and we talked about more than just ancient Tongan traditions - though of course I still partook in all the activities and made my own Lu, coconut cream, kava, tiny bit of tapa cloth, etc. It started to rain heavily towards the end of the two hours and I was stranded for another hour with no way to get back to my accommodation as the taxis weren't arriving. However the girls made me feel right at home until the rain cleared. The girls were super informative and knowledgeable in all the traditions and medicinal uses for the local flora, I honestly learned so much and would recommend to anyone.

Response to Thill Dany. We apologise for your experience however in our defence you had not made yourselves known to our reception. You joined an already fully booked group. We value our culture and the experience we provide to our guests. It's unfortunate that you attempted to bargain and belittle us and place a negative review on a demonstration you claimed that you didn't fully experience. Due to your confrontational behaviour in front of other guests we waived the entry fee to which you decided to leave a donation and a negative review! Hopefully in future travels you are more mindful of people and their culture.

Great experience, don't miss it. We learned so much about the culture, cooked our meal in an earth oven, had a delicious meal after all the great information. It's a must in Tonga

We had a great visit to @AncientTonga yesterday where we learnt all about culture and how crafts are made. We had fun husking, cracking, grating and squeezing coconut as part of a dish that was cooked in a traditional oven.. And tasted delicious. This place is very well run and worth a visit. Thank you for showing the @youngpoineer group the wonderful Tongan culture.

As agroup of 4 we entered the site while there was a demonstration. I asked permission to enter and was granted access. Later they approached us and asked us to pay 40 USD (75 Tonga Pa'anga) per person - even as we only joined the demonstration when it was nearly finished. There where no signs or indication about the entrance prices and what we saw was never worth the price they asked .

If you're looking for something authentic and culturally engaging, go to Ancient Tonga. Jessica and her mother run a very professional and successful business show-casing Tongan culture of 'old' - how to make tapa cloth, how to make food for the umu, showing us the many varieties of plants for both medicinal purposes and personal cleansers, how kava is made and used plus helping us understand Tongan attire of the ta'ovalas and falas. You get all this and a lovely lunch which you help prepare before the tour. Steep in culture, rich in knowledge. First time there and looking forward to bringing my students back for next year's tour. They even customise tours if there is something specific you want to experience. Thank-you to Ancient Tonga for a great tour. See you next year. Malo 'aupito! Makerita & Alison (Marist College, Auckland)

My mother-in-law and I took the 10am Tuesday morning tour on a beautiful Tongan day along with two other visitors to Tonga. What a great way to discover and learn more about some of Tonga's traditions! Both of us have spent a fair bit of time in Tonga and it was a perfect way to answer some of the many questions and sample the many traditions on show. The tour is well set up and we were taken on a journey through multiple demonstrations. A great way to spend two hours and great value for money!

One of the best culture tours I've been on. It is really enjoyable to have a tour that covers so many different aspects of the Tongan Culture. From their food, plants, medicine, their beautiful Tapa making and weaving skills. We also learnt about their different dress codes and tasted Kava, smelt different fragrant leaves and touched the Tapa bark before and after it is pounded. I was amazed at what I learnt. Because the guide spoke English so well we asked all those questions you want to but are to shy to. Like why do they decorate their graves with quilts and what's the customs of weddings. If you are looking for a quality tour make sure you go to Ancient Tonga and don't get it mixed up with any other tour provider because you will get disappointed.

Mahyo likes to browse the Pacific Ocean from time to time looking for satellite images of sharks so Mahyo knows which areas to avoid. Mahyo find Tonga in Pacific Ocean by accident. Tiny island. So small. Even smaller than neighbour Fiji. Mahyo likes drinking Fiji water. Square bottle, very efficient bottle design shape. Maybe Tonga will make Tonga water. Anyway. Mahyo think Tonga flag look good but dislike large population of Tonga blocking roads. OBSTRUCTION and OBSTACLE. People need to drive. Why be on road? There is so much room on the sand. TongA.

Incredible views from this beautiful house tucked away down a tiny gravel/mud road. Our little rental Toyota handled the driveway just fine with a little patience. I feel like the place is perfectly appointed for the type of person that visits Tonga. If you're looking for granite tile, the fanciest appliances, and king sized beds all in an air conditioned space, good luck with that. Being June, it rains a lot but the temps are around 75 during the day and 70 at night. Highly recommend this place and would happily stay again in the future.

Just a show in the backyard. Not bad but don't know how realistic it is. Cyclone probably wiped it out.

Mesmerizing tour about Tongan history. Tour included a little museum, introduction to tradiotional weaving, herbal medicine, making and tasting Kava. After the tour we ate a delicious lunch of traditionally made chicken, fish, bread- and other fruits. Tour hostess was super nice and seemed genuenly thrilled to show us all the things. Outside tourist season it is recommended to go there to ask and book a tour for later. We paid T$ 120 / each for the whole experience including food. It was worth it. There is also a little gift shop for souvenirs, locally made body lotions etc.

Ancient Tonga is perfect for those who want to better understand the culture of Tonga. History, arts, dancing, Kava ceremony, medicinal plants, family relationships...it is all here, and in a setting that brings you authentic buildings, clothing, and a fabulous family run business that is welcoming and happy to help you grow your understanding of all aspects of this incredible people and place. One of the best in all of Polynesia!

Weakest dinner show in Polynesia, unfortunately. Dance performances were weak, they did not get the right music in and just a few acts, no fire show. Food (dinner buffet) was okay but mostly pasta, potato and meat, rest more British than Tongan, drinks expensive. I cannot really recommend it as I have seen a lot better shows in Fiji and Samoa. But may be thats what it is in Tonga.

We really enjoyed the experience, we learned a lot & loved the interaction with the guides. It was very well organised & provided an excellent first insight into multiple facets of Tongan culture (food, kava, tapa & traditional medicines). Would thoroughly recommend!
