Cosy rooms, with basic blankets. Incredible views from the bed and very calm and isolated from other guests. It's very challenging to get to the island during raining season. Be aware of 4% additional fee when paying by card. Count 30-40 000 UGX for pick up by boat, which is the only way to get to the island so in my opinion this should be included in the accommodation costs. Toilets are compost toilets and they were very clean. The showers are outside and have cold water. There is an additional fee to get warm water. Wifi only works in restaurant area. There are plenty (too many I'd say) of dishes on the menu but don't expect any fine cuisine. Staff is helpful in case you need any assistance.

Me and my friend had a wonderful time camping here, with the best staff I met in Uganda so far! Lovely place to experience the beauty of the lake surrounded by all kind of birds. Also big plus for the variety of great food options. They were capable taking dieet restrictions into account, like vegan and gluten-free. And all the profit goes back into the community, how wonderful. Highly recommended!

Beautiful place and super friendly staff. It's a non-profit organization so you are supporting a good cause, you feel the place is full of good vibes. The menu is surprisingly big for being on an island, make sure to try the crayfish in any form, especially the Avocado crayfish dish is excellent! The breakfast options such as the pancakes are really good too, as well as everything else we tried. The budget rooms are simple but decent, the toilets are outdoors but totally clean and fine. People complaining about hot showers costing extra don't understand that it costs less than 1 USD for a huge tank of boiling hot water, so you do get a really really warm and nice outdoor shower for the money. The place is excellent value for money and really peaceful, and the staff makes sure you enjoy your time. Take a headlamp/torch with you, and some boardgames, and enjoy your stay! There is a dock for swimming in the lake, we also went out with canoes.

We had a wonderful stay at Byoona Amagara! You can arrange a quick boat to take you to the island. The rooms are very nice and have a lovely view of the lake. The food is the best we had on our whole trip! Try the crayfish avocado. And the staff were very friendly and accommodating. Cannot wait to visit again.

Probably the best place we’ve stayed at during our Uganda trip! The staff is simply lovely, the place is gorgeous and love the bird sounds throughout the day. The many community initiatives are a big plus. Highly recommend going!

Great place to stay on lake Bunyonyi! We stayed in the geo domes, we're a couple & on our honeymoon. The domes are super cool, really large & roomy, and the beds comfortable. The hot water in the showers wasn't working at the time of our stay (they had just installed a new system) so the staff would heat up water & fill the top gravity tank. Extremely high value experience - the domes were cheap at only $52 USD per night, and food/drinks were reasonably priced for an island where you don't have any other dining options. We took a motor boat to reach the island, arranged through our tour operator & the lodge. There is a list of activities available to do while staying there & we did the dugout canoe paddling tour. This took us to punishment island & leprosy island, and a shore tour of their local hospital/maternity ward. The tour ran for about 3 hours which is more than enough hand paddling. Rest of the afternoon spent reading a book in a hammock with a beer in hand. We did get gastro staying here, which is why I've dropped a star off the rating. We think it was from the crayfish or the drinking water (more likely). The crayfish are like small shrimp & are not recommended. The water is "sand filtered" which does nothing to kill the bugs in it, hence we think the gastro was from the water, as we had it both nights that we stayed, when we only ate crayfish once. Anyway, aside from the unplanned weight loss, the lodge itself is great to stay at & we would recommend it to everyone.

This place is beautiful. It's sunny, shady, green, and so peaceful. You can book excursions, or you can just sit at Byoona Amagara and admire the view.

You will need to park in a designated parking lot on the lakeside and take a half hour boat ride in order to reach the island. There are beautiful views of the lake from this resort. The bed was very comfortable. The food at the restaurant was very good. We especially loved the fish and chips for dinner and french toast for breakfast. Be prepared for an experience much like camping, though. The showers are outside and can get quite chilly, so bring plenty of warm layers.

Great place on an beautiful island. Very friendly staff and delicious food. They have everything from dorm rooms to nice en-suite huts with views on beautiful Lake Bunyonyi. Hotel picks you up with a boat on the mainland. Ask them to take you around on the island and to show you the local school, which is supported by the hotel - it’s an interesting experience to see the happy kids! And by the way: You can swim in the lake: No hippos, no crocs and no bilharzia!

Byoona Amagara is a beautiful, budget friendly island retreat that compares to nothing else. I am a multi year repeat customer who stays here each time I travel to Lake Bunyonyi. The food is mediocre, but the menu is expansive. It’s vegetarian bend is part of the resort’s larger eco-friendly value set. For that, it is appreciated. The owner is kind, but consistently gives questionable travel advice - always revolving around keeping business at his resort - an understood bias. There is more space here than you will imagine, if you take the time to explore, including a library, billiards table and room, education centre, and small futsal pitch.

Located on one of Lake Bunyonyi's Island 🏝 the place creates a real adventurous experience and feel of Lake Bunyonyi's stories. The meals are good and provided at the right time. The comfort level of the rooms is just 150% for an island feel.

Located on an island on Lake Bunyonyi, Byona amagara is an awesome place with great views. Using a boat from Muko to here, is another bonus you get as you get to sail on lake bunyonyi one of the deepest in the world with so many birds. The boat takes about 1 hour to reach the lodge but you never get bored as Tyson has amazing stories about the lake with 29 islands.

I can't say enough about Byoona. I booked my stay as a package that included a gorilla excursion to Bwindi in 2020. I had to postpone twice due to covid, and Byoona couldn't have been more accommodating. They were incredibly helpful in rescheduling and updating me on the latest information regarding covid protocols. Above and beyond. The facilities themselves are amazing. If you can, ask to stay in a west-facing geodome and enjoy the evening sunsets. The common dining area is inviting and the food was delicious. Even if you aren't going to see gorillas, Lake Bunyonyi is gorgeous and Byoona Amagara is an ideal home base from which o explore. This place has a rustic, backpackers' vibe. Unplug and enjoy the relaxing sights and sounds.

I was expecting to like Byoona Amagara very much, as I had seen amazing pictures and reviews. However, many aspects of my stay made the whole experience of an eco-resort on an island in Lake Bunyonyi quite poor. First of all, I booked via email and spoke with the manager directly two days in advance. He never indicated where I had to take the boat to access the resort, so when we followed our Google Maps itinerary, as we were driving a motorcycle, it took us to the wrong resort (on the same island). I had to bribe a local fisherman to take us to the island, and then followed him on a 10-minute walk through the jungle to get to the back entrance of Byoona Amagara. When I finally arrived, in the dark and soaking wet because of the rain, I was welcomed by an unprepared staff who seemed surprised of my arrival. They asked if I had a booking, which I did. It turned out they had mixed up two reservations, with similar names (Laura / Lauren). This meant our room wasn’t ready. We had dinner while waiting, which was pleasant, but a bit slow. The tilapia fish was delicious, the vegetarian option a bit less creative. What surprised us the most is that nothing, absolutely nothing except for the room is included in the price you pay at Byoona Amagara. Not even hot water for showering or drinking water. This is all explained by their “eco-resort” label. In the name of the environment, Byoona Amagara lets optimistic Western travelers pay 60$ for the absolute bare minimum. What you get is a bed, agreeably in a nice location in a open hut on the lake, but nothing more. It all honestly felt like a joke. When asked for drinking water for in the room, the staff told us they only had single glasses, and no bottles (again, because of “Eco”). Of course we had to pay for it the next morning. Same thing with breakfast. The food was very good but we had to pay extra. Not too expensive but it still seems like they keep adding extra charges. When we wanted to leave, we had to pay for a canoe to bring us back to the mainland. Meaning, there is no free option to leave the resort, which felt a bit strange. Overall, the island is beautiful, and the cottages are simple but nicely built. But it doesn’t make up for the poor service and unprepared staff. The manager was continuously on the phone, speaking so loud that you couldn’t just enjoy the sounds of nature.

Very relaxing and paradise-feeling environment. The people are very friendly and the food (everything with avocado!!) is divine. Two points of criticism: some costs weren’t shared with us upfront like hot shower, parking of the car, separate cost for the boat to get here,… I would have liked more transparency on this. And we also don’t recommend doing the tour with Tyson…

👍👍 Beautiful and peaceful place. Wonderful experience to wake up in an abundance of birds just in front of our 'nest'. Would definitely recommend this place as it supports the local community.
