A great railway with a wonderful history. We travelled from Llanfair station to Welshpool on a return journey. One of the highlights are the open balconies on the carriages which you can use to view your journey. The gift shop at Llanfair (also another available at Welshpool) has a good range of stock for all ages. We recommend buying tickets in advance though they can be purchased on arrival. There is a good car park for railway visitors a short distance from the entrance.

What a brilliant narrow gauge line, the staff were amazingly friendly and helpful across the ticketing, cafe, shops and onboard the train making our day out faultless. Lovely to ride on carriages with open balconies at each end for a quite different ride experience for all the family. A really decent run of track, the ride is around 45 mins each way with lovingly restored engines and carriages. We thought is was good value considering the journey times, and the food and drink options were very reasonable. No toilets or buffet service on the train but these are available at each end of the line.

Like Micheal Portillo but without a lime coloured jacket matched with Crimson Red trousers I do enjoy a good train ride and what better way then with the nostalgia provided here by this excellent steamtrain service. The smell of coal burning and the gentle rickety-rackety lull you into evocative memories of long ago when rain travel was pleasurable. The weather was good, and standing on the boarding outside the cabin was lovely. Highly recommended

This was an amazing activity to do. We booked the tickets on the day before with food included. The station is small but has a really nice gift shop and cafe. The check in was easy, our food was ready and our seats reserved on the train. The views are amazing, with valleys full of sheeps and pheasants. The food was delivered in well served picnic hampers, with a nice variety and amount. We even took our dog that enjoyed the ride took. The journey takes 45 minutes each way. This a really nice thing to do and ridding a steam train with 120 years old it was a great experience.

Wonderful place. Very friendly and helpful staff (all volunteers!). Wonderful scenery; very hilly line, like a big dipper at times, but superbly turned out loco and stock! Most trains have balcony ends, as you can see from the videos; certainly not cold out there with a huge radiator in front of you (The hot smoke box!!!) We went with fellow Bala Lake Railway Volunteers. All had a brilliant day!!! John Harrison. Wallasey, Wirral.

The staff here are very friendly, The train journey was absolutely stunning with the scenery and the cafe at the other end of Welshpool was so nice, The staff were really happy and friendly, even though they were very busy . Food was nice and the Bara Brith was delicious. Really easy to book online. As a charity if I had any money to talk of would definitely support this one . Brilliant day

Fantastic visit! Staff were brilliant with my shy little girl (who loves trains) not getting in her face but being very considerate and giving her enough space. Once she'd gotten comfortable she was happy to take her activity book! Train journey was beautiful, would highly recommend xx

On the way to Ynyslas we spotted lots of steam and trains - plenty if cameras about. Parked the car grabbed a coffee and took some pictures. Lovely.

Went for my 64th birthday, it was a lovely sunny day, we stood on one of the open balconies as 16 miles of gorgeous wales slipped by, heaven!, had lunch in the cafe which was well priced and a lovely place to be. I couldn’t rate it highly enough. Nice people running it ,all volunteers no wonder it’s popular.

Just returned from a great Santa special. This railway is a gem, the volunteers were incredibly friendly, the whole day was run extremely well and Santa and his elves kept the little ones and big ones entertained. The loco (Earl) didn’t have a mark on it and it was great standing out on the balcony to hear it working. Would highly recommend this railway to anyone who loves heritage steam and a pleasant day out. The views are stunning and the atmosphere laid back and professional. Will be visiting again in the future!
