Service really slow, food was warm, £4.50 for a Hong Kong style milk tea is well overpriced. You’re better going to a local Chinese restaurant which would serve you a better quality meal. The place is well overrated.

Absolutely Hong Kong local taste. I like this very much. Super highly recommended for their crispy noodles. So much memory in Hong Kong. Before, most of the time in UK I would rather cook Hong Kong food myself but now I need to come back more, because this restaurant is so good, not the strange dishes designed for westerners in Chinatown. The food are excellent. I have ordered a dish of char siu/barbecue pork and roast duck (叉燒拼燒鴨), a dish of pan fried king pawns crispy noodles in black bean sauce(豉椒大蝦干燒麵)and two drinks iced (lemon) tea. Chau siu and roast duck are super juicy. The crispy noodles are my favourite, hardly seen in UK. It is different from the noodles in wok-to-X. The service is good. I heard a few review said the service was not good and I think it is misunderstanding. First, I think it may be due to the different expectations from Hong Kong local food to the wok-to-X or so-called Chinese food in Chinatown. Second, I think the waitress is not rude but with limitation in English. She is not so good at English and therefore the words used may be not good enough. It requires being considerate but this is not a place to expect a inhuman Hidilao-style Chinese master-slave service. The waitress is actually very friendly to me When I speak Cantonese, she is like my old friend. I am happy and comfortable with the service. The location is convenient. It is 6 minutes to York Minster. It is absolutely a good rest place of tea time after the visit. If you have one day trip in York, it is good to have dinner here before the train to leave. It is 15 minutes walk to the station. Besides, it is accessible for wheelchairs and baby stroller. Seats are limited and better reserved before. One thing to notice is the payment CASH only (when I went there). Otherwise, you may need to go to ATM.

This restaurant is CASH ONLY. I can’t stress this enough as it’s 2021 and some might already forget the use of paper notes and coins. Milk tea was quite authentic, if you’re craving for Hong Kong style milk tea then definitely worth a visit. Food are so-so, or maybe I wasn’t ordering the right dish. Roasted duck was delicious. But Char Siu (HK style roasted pork) was overly lean I had to chew it with strengths. Rice was barely warm.

The food, the drinks and the atmosphere felt exactly like hong kong. I had hk style French toast, hk milk tea and beef brisket noodle and it really reminded me of my time growing up in hk. Really well done to the owners on how well they've captured hong kong cafes in the UK!

Definitely a highlight of our trip. The best HK tea restaurant we had in UK, very authentic Cantonese dishes hardly found in anywhere else, and is SUPER dog friendly! We had a good time (especially Domi the puppy who got loads of loves and treats & toy in there)

Feels like in Hong Kong! As long as you step in the restaurant, and you can listing the Hong Kong Radio. That is amazing! Serve traditional Hong Kong food, good size of portion and tasty! A lovely family running business with good customer service! Highly recommended!!

Okay, this is amazing, it was expensive but it was literally perfect Chinese food, and the problem for all Asians in the UK is that the rice it is always hard and not cooked correctly but here, it is served by Asians and definitely the best Chinese food you can find in York.

Good local atmosphere, really friendly staff and the meat was all delicious, but the vegetables were a little stale. Just slightly overpriced- especially the drinks. Probably won't go back.

The best HK cha chaan tang I’ve ever had in UK. A warm family run restaurant has their own principles on serving the most authentic HK food to their customers. Upper River has now become my top priority for my next visits in York, definitely recommended to those who appreciate true HK culture and food, this place is definitely cannot be missed. We listened to staff’s recommendations and turned out to have the biggest surprises with super yummy food.

Very popular with Hongkongers, and with good reason too - delicious Hong Kong dishes - made the same way they would be in Hong Kong (no alterations for local palates). Prices are fairly standard (around £10 to £15 per dish), and the customer service is fine. Due to its' popularity, expect a waiting time of around an hour for a table. My party had a stir fried beef with black bean sauce & rice (picture 5), with a bowl of beef brisket noodles (picture 6). We also had Hong Kong style milk tea (a speciality) which features sweet condensed milk 😋. A welcome feature is the bilingual menu (English & Chinese), which means everyone can try the delights on offer - not just the small Chinese speaking market !

I saw a lot of positive google reviews before our visit, so I was probably overestimating the restaurant. I liked the spring rolls but the noodle was slightly tasteless for me. The service was okay, just I didn’t enjoy the loud conversation of restaurant staff complaining about the other customers. I guess the restaurant has a lot of room for improvement interior, atmosphere etc…

I ordered stir fried hor fun with beef and a hot milk tea. The food was great! It tasted just like what they serve in Hong Kong cha chaan teng. Tbh it was even better than some chain restaurants like Cafe 100%. Usually I can't finish a whole dish of stir fried hor fun with beef because of its oily taste, and I always leave the onions and bean sprouts on the side. However this time I finished the whole dish ngl!!! The ppl were very nice too, and the siu yuk shown in the photo was on the house! I will definitely come again xx

This shop serves original recipe of Hong Kong Style Cantonese food in 70s. It's authentic and has some differences in what Hong Kong food are being served right now. If you want to try the wonderful Hong Kong style dishes, this will be the perfect place in York.

The famous Hong Kong restaurant in York. Situated next to the York minster for about 3minutes, it’s in a good location when you finish off touring York city and looking for food afterwards. Very friendly staff, cozy atmosphere, food are amazing. Hong Kong Barbecues are the highlights but there are more to try.

Good if you are craving hong kong food, owners are very very nice, it is just not my taste tho, not what I expected to taste like, but the fried rice from the next table looks and smells so good, maybe i will get some fried rice next time instead!

One of the best and authentic cha chaan teng in the U.K.! Stir fry beef udon (as rice noodle sold out), fried tofu with salt and pepper, sweet and sour chicken rice are really nice. However the French toast is only made by one slice of bread and no peanut butter inside, would be much better if they put too slices of bread with peanut butter as it’s what it should be in Hong Kong! Milk tea is good but I prefer a stronger tea flavour. Recommended this restaurant!

Very and only authentic Hong Kong style “cha chaan teng” in York. They are not only providing “Siu Mei” and fried noodles and rice, but also really local HK “tea set” like Ham macaroni.
