Ate with friends on Tuesday night. Well presented and tasty food. Quite pricey but no complaints about food quality or service which was spot on. I enjoyed the cow and pig burger. My friends enjoyed pies and the other burgers. Desserts were tasty but small for the price. But we were all full after two courses.

My wife and I are spending a well earned break in the city of York and decided to take In some of the history of this beautiful City. We were looking for somewhere to eat out for dinner and thought that there would be nothing better than dining where Guy Fawkes was born, at the Guy Fawkes Inn. What a great place to drink and eat, you can feel the sense of history as you walk though the door. The decor is fitting for the establishment. We were greeted warmly by Tara and was shown to a lovely table in the corner of the main restaurant. Tara was very sweet and made sure we were made very welcome and took our orders promptly. The menu was varied and had something for everybody. I ordered the whitebait for starter with tartar sauce which was cooked beautifully and the tartar was excellent and had a lovely sharp acidity to it. My wife ordered the black pudding bonbons which had a lovely covering of crispy breadcrumbs and wasn't at all greasy. The black pudding inside had a lovely texture and a distinctive taste. For my main course I decided to try the Guy Fawkes famous steak pie, well let's say I wasnt disappointed....it was huge!!! The steak meat was succulent and tender and melted in the mouth, the gravy was velvety and was seasoned nicely. The pastry was cooked perfectly, no soggy bottom here!! My wife ordered the Irish stew which the lamb meat fell off the bone it was so tender. All in all the service, food and sense of history all hit the mark as far as we were concerned. Also a nice touch by the management was to allow me to purchase a Guy Fawkes tankard for myself and one for my brother in law in Australia. If you are in York I highly recommend you visit the Guy Fawkes Inn for a meal. You won't leave feeling hungry!!

Absolutely loved our stay here for our anniversary. The room was beautiful and had lots of lovely little quirks. We had dinner in the restaurant which was amazing, the service was fantastic and the whole team were brilliant. The location is perfect with amazing views of York minster which is right on the doorstep. Breakfast was delicious. We will definitely be staying again in the future

Booked in for dinner, bed and breakfast with my husband to meet up with friends. We had a lovely 4 poster bed and our room looked out onto York Minster ….amazing ! The Hotel has a lovely warm and cosy atmosphere. Love the fact that the decor is in keeping with the age and character of the building. The staff were friendly and welcoming and the food was delicious, the portion sizes were very generous ! We would definitely stay here again, a hidden gem .

Just a short walk from York minster. Interesting pub and bigger than it looks from the front. Dim lighting to create an atmosphere. We had the guy Fawkes pie...lovely...not cheap for a pie but worth trying. The only negative is I had pint of lemonade and the glass had more ice than lemonade making it more expensive than beer ... Make sure you ask for just two bits of ice as this trick of filling the glass with ice is really not on when their food prices are not budget.

Went for lunch at the restaurant. The steak pie was very good, however the vegan pie was not to my partner's taste at all. But worse still was that, when asking for water for the table expecting tap (Forgot to specify, our bad), the bottled water turned out to be £4 on the receipt, and not even the size which we were charged for. You'd expect to pay maybe £2 maximum, but this definitely felt like taking advantage of the customers.

Had a great meal here with friends on my visit. Their indoor courtyard is a great spot to have a casual dinner in the fresh air — but they also have more formal indoor seating, too (as well as just the classic old-school pub section). Fantastic traditional food, but slightly elevated. The steaming-hot steak pot pie fresh out of the oven with chunks of tender, juicy beef is a must. The bangers and mash were also delicious. Would highly recommend both. I imagine their Sunday roast must also be amazing if these 2 dishes were anything to judge by.

We stayed in the top floor room (room 14) paying a premium for a lovely bathroom. It’s had been extremely hot and we went to use the facilities. NO HOT WATER. We managed to find an employee to ask why the water is cold. Was told they were going to reset the boiler and to wait 15 mins. 1 hour later no hot water still. So had to wash in freezing cold water (no bath which is what we paid extra for). This has been mentioned to higher management Mr Simon Cotton, however he seems uninterested in our complaint and more interested in telling me about an expansion of the hotel! I just hope they get a bigger hot water tank! Service for breakfast wasn’t the best. Food was good so they must have a decent chef. So disappointed wouldn’t stay again.

Very cool spot to have dinner in! The Sunday Roast was excellent! First time having it and really enjoyed the Yorkshire pudding. It was quite humid in the Inn, but it was a very neat historic building to be in! The staff is very accommodating and courteous :)

The Guy Fawkes Inn in York is an absolute gem! Nestled in the heart of this historic city, it offers a unique and cozy atmosphere that's steeped in history. The interior exudes character, and the warm, welcoming staff make you feel right at home. The food and drink choices were top-notch, But what truly sets this pub apart is its connection to the Gunpowder Plot and the historical decor that immerses you in the past. A visit to the Guy Fawkes Inn is a must for anyone looking to combine great food, friendly service, and a fascinating glimpse into York's history. I can't recommend it enough!

We stayed at the Guy Fawkes Inn during our visit to York in October. It was brilliant! The room was full of character and a treat to stay in. Our meal at their restaurant was incredible! The meat pie was wonderful and when we return next year, I plan to have it again.

Hotel and rooms very historic, floors have a lean to them. Very quirky. Is a pub downstairs and as lead up to Christmas was really busy, but can't hear any noise in the room from the pub. Room is lovely and warm. Will try the breakfast tomorrow.

I came here for lunch upon hearing about their steak and ale pie. While not cheap, the pie is not only the best presented I’ve ever had but also the most delicious. Aside from the food, the atmosphere of the pub is hard to beat, with decor centered around Guy Fawkes. Plus, an excellent selection of local cask ales.

Really enjoyed our one night stay at the Guys Fawkes Inn! The location of the inn is perfect and I would highly recommend for anyone who is looking to stay close to the bars, restaurants, nightlife or York Minster Abbey. Our room and bathroom was clean...the bed was very comfy and the room itself was just enough space. Loved the dark/moody decor of the room...helped set the scene! There are no elevators so you will have to carry your bags up the stairs but overall it wasn't too bad. When we arrived it was bustling between the bar and restaurant (the check in desk is between the two rooms) so our check in process was a bit hurried (the bartender might have been the one to check us in). Overall, I would def. come back to Guy Fawkes if I ever found myself in York again!

It was a ladies weekend away. Neither of us had stopped at the Guy Fawkes inn before and we were not disappointed. I booked the hotel and I have mobility issues and like an idiot did not take into consideration that lifts had not been invented in the 16th Century. There was no need to worry the reception staff carried our luggage to our room when we arrived and brought it back down when we were leaving. The breakfast we excellent, The bed was very comfortable, The bathroom was spotless . We had dinner in the restaurant twice during our 4 night stay and that also was excellent. The hotel is close to everything we wanted to do and see. One day we went on the guided tour which is arranged by the hotel. Our tour guide David Haw, was very informative , funny and even introduced us to people like a street artist , the people who do the owl and falcon display in the museum gardens a wonderful day was had by all. I will be returning to the hotel on our next trip to York without a doubt.

On a rainy Sunday evening we stopped for a meal and it was really nice. They do kids menu too and the service was quick and friendly. Veggie roast was good, and tasty

Great pub, we had the option of sitting inside or in the garden. However we were offered a small covered in room in the garden. It was great, big enough for 4 people and not as noisy. Service was good and food was nice. We walked in and were seated straight away. Even a couple of pigeon joined us, hoping for scraps.

Great location, an easy walk into the old town. It is a busy pub with a good selection of ales. Our room was a the front over the main bar and was a little noisy during opening hours but was very quiet after closing. The Minster was opposite and I was concerned that the bells were going to chime all night - I am pleased to say they didn't! Because it was so popular the service was a little slow. The room was great, very old and the floor sloped. Our key-card was programmed to open the outside door too so we could come and go as we wished even if the pub was closed. There is no parking at the Inn - we parked in Monks Bar CP. it was about a 10 min walk to the Inn.

Lovely old pub, right next to the Minster and steps from the centre. You will hear about this pub if you go on the ghost tour of York, we popped in because of this. Great to see it has masses of character and feels like stepping back in time, we went in when it was really quiet so that added to the historical feeling. I almost booked to stay here, having been inside I wish I had

Such a lovely, quirky place to go for food. I loved all of the features. We sat out the back where there were blankets and outdoor heaters. The food was gorgeous, especially the truffle and parmesan fries. The waitress was so lovely, she made me feel valued. Would highly recommend.

On a 2 night break with my husband, this old Inn was perfectly situated central in York. Booking in was quick and easy with attentive staff. The room was large and quirky with everything you needed and more. Breakfasts were bookable in advance with a time, with a large choice should cover all appetites and cooked fresh. Tea and biscuits replenished on second day. Bed really comfortable. Yes we definitely will return to do more sight seeing.

Great place to stay. Lovely room, comfy bed and really comfy pillows. We only had 1 towel between the two of us for some reason, but this was quickly rectified. The breakfast was one of the best breakfasts I've had in a long while and the staff were great. Will definitely be coming back here

Went for dinner as recommended for a friend's birthday. Lovely atmosphere, gorgeous food. Partner had the lamb shank which just melted in your mouth. Definitely worth going if you can, recommend book as fills up quickly.

Had to try the guy Fawkes pie, which was incredibly good. Brought back childhood memories of what pies used to taste like. Very filling and couldn't finish it. Washed down with a great pint of Timothy Taylor's Landlord and a pint of Guy Fawkes bitter. Both good. Well worth a visit.

This review concerns the restaurant, not the hotel experience. My friend and I traveled to York, England for a few days this fall. We decided to hop into the Guy Fawkes Inn to try the "Famous Steak Pie", and we also ordered a side salad. The interior was super cute and we were really excited to get our food. When we got the pie, it looked like it was fresh out of the oven. The salad looked great too. Unfortunately, we could only take a few bites of each. The pie tasted so heavy and salty. The crust was great, and the steak inside was cooked just right, but the flavor was awful. It tasted like I was eating bouillon cube paste. The gravy was too salty and overpowering. The salad was also weird. It was sweet in a bad way. We could not finish our food and we left almost 10 minutes into the meal. It was a shame because the restaurant is well designed and the food looked great.

Went for Sunday roast a week ago as it was supposed to be the grande finale for our holiday. I have been going to eat here for over 10years and it was always a pleasure, until this time. The roast cost about 17 quid and didn't have stuffing. The roast beef was chewy and worst cut of meat I have ever been served. It was cut 1cm this (weird for roast beef, I know...) The Gates roast potatoes were bit raw inside, not that nice fluffy texture you'd expect. Broccoli was not even cooked enough, pretty much raw. Had to leave most of the plate as inedible experience. Gravy was good and the Yorkshire pudding. Told waiter about experience when asked and go apologies, but no compensation (didn't ask for that though). Sadly I will not be coming over to eat anymore, used to be great and now it's rubbish. Service was good and beer, but as far as Sunday roast goes, sorry but no.

I booked in for 4 of us for a lunch. Had a reservation for 1pm. One member had a meeting at half 2 so we went early on the off chance we could seat earlier. The staff were great and seated us immediately and accommodated relocating us outside as the weather was lovely. Service was great with the food arriving promptly and was well presented. We all enjoyed the food and the venue.

We enjoyed one night here. We chose this hotel for the location to attractions and for the history. Food quality was good overall but overpriced. Good atmosphere and historic decor which I loved. Facilities in room need improving like the shower but I appreciate its an old building. The hotel offers a free guided tour by David Haw in the mornings apart from Thursday. This was very informative and I would highly recommend. Donations welcome depending how much you would like to pay. We ended up having a three hour tour with just me and my partner . Overall I would recommend this hotel for the history of the building and the location.
