Was a very interesting place .. from being restored various cannons of the times..a small step back into history..staff are welcoming and helpful.. price was good .. food available.. take time to visit and keep these time capsules of history open before it's torn down by greedy development schemes..

Interesting piece of history surrounding Harwich and the fort and how it would have been used, and having been restored it gives a glimpse into the past, not a bad way to spend an hour or so (not limited and can take as long as you like), and it's only £4 for adults with under 16's being free.

A hidden gem and well worth a visit. Very reasonably priced at £4 an adult and children free as a family unit. Having visited many other small attractions up and down the country you really can't go wrong with a visit here as part of a look around the wider area. Interesting displays relevant to both the redoubts primary use as well as other military, historical and local paraphernalia. The volunteers were so very helpful and clearly enthusiastic about the fort and took their time on multiple occasions to talk through aspects of the fort and also a Bofors AA gun, even letting me and my daughter have a go. Plenty of potential left for additional displays in the future too, especially if they receive the support of plenty of visitors. Free parking is available on site but not unlimited. However, you could park in plenty of other streets locally and walk up if needs be. The turning is quite understated but google maps will take you to the right place, if not look out for the sign and flag. It's a shame that we are not more local and can make it to one of the many themed open days they have running but will definitely visit again if we are down this way in the future.

Staff here go above and beyond to make your visit an extra special one. Very knowledgeable and happy to help. The Fort itself is very large with many rooms to go and explore with props to make u get a feel for life back then. Cute little book store and lovely lady just next door selling bits and bobs.

This place is a hidden gem steeped in history. We joined Spectral Hunters for a night of paranormal investigation. So many rooms to explore with a friendly team - even the staff at the fort were extremely welcoming. Would definitely like to return

What an interesting place, built at a time when Britain was fearful of invasion by Napolean, it has been lovingly restored from an almost derelict place. Run entirely by volunteers who were all friendly, helpful and knowledgeable. Do visit, give the place your support. It's worth it.

A place and a wonderful piece of history. The staff is very friendly and pleasant. I was lucky and they let me play with many weapons in the display cases and explained how to use them. My family and I highly recommend this place. Thank you for making our day more beautiful.

Very interesting place, the staff are very friendly. You are taught how to use the big guns, you can march with the home gard, and also many other stories worth every penny

Went to visit the Fort Museum. Unfortunately, it was shut. Went on a Monday during school holidays. It's actually only open Thursday-Sunday. So we just had a wander round.. It's a nice little sea town. Not many 'new housing' everything looks 'untouched' with places like an old prison lock up converted into home a home. Very Victorian looking.. steeped in history.... if anything was open lol

We loved the atmosphere and the friendly and informative volunteers. It was a Napoleonic weekend with cannons and gunfire. We had been warned! It really gave a sense of what it would have been like in battle. The reenactment volunteers looked great and very enthusiastic. We will return to this beautifully restored Fort. The hard work to get it looking so wonderful is much appreciated.

Fascinating place to visit and learn the history. Built to protect against the French and saved by dedicated volunteers who have done amazing work in stabilising the building and bringing its history to life. Lots of exhibits ranging from militaria to a rebuilt church organ, maritime history and social history.

It's a bit tucked away, but well worth hunting out. All the staff are really friendly and have lots of information about the site and exhibits. The site has been well preserved and is filled with military and historical exhibits. Strategically placed on the high ground it offers some nice views of the surrounding area. If you drive here the parking at the site is limited, and some of the rooms the exhibits are a bit eclectic. Overall though a fun place to visit

Well worth a visit to discover a whole host of history. Very sizable fort that has been restored over the past 50 years. Plenty of maritime history, WW1/2, Naplonlionc and local Harwich history. Staffed by very helpful local volunteers. £4 entry fee well worth it, if just for the view!

Each visit to this place is fantastic, with ongoing restoration. The cannon and views from above are lovely, and there are numerous buildings and rooms to explore.

👍 A striking monument which is very close to the railway station. It is only open for a few hours on Saturdays for the Summer half of the year - so I arrived ten weeks late and on the wrong day of the week. It is photogenic and the yellow brickwork is very pleasing. The Low Lighthouse is nearby, so yo...
