After paying £245.00 for one night only two weeks in advance (at their insistence) we arrived to find that our admittedly spacious room at the very top of the building had no tea or coffee making facilities and no complementary bottles of water and glasses. We know there was room service on the ad. but as there were only two staff members around and we were up three flights of stairs it seemed unkind to ask someone to come up again. We are both over 70 and would have liked to have sat in our room and enjoyed the beautiful view after the climb to get up there and as sleeplessness is something that seems to come with age the ability to make a cuppa during the night would have been appreciated. When we went down to the main rooms and finally found someone to ask about getting a kettle for the room we are told ‘we don’t have kettles’. While the views are lovely and the food was good I think we will find a another hotel in the area next time and get all the views and in-room facilities at less money .

I stayed with my mum and our small dog for 3 nights of a 4 night stay with my disabled step father staying the first night. The location is lovely, but there are several minus factors which would make me hesitate to recommend it or want to stay again Room facilities We had one of the 'best' (highest priced) rooms overlooking the sea; beautiful view but the room lacked basic creature comforts - no tea tray, shower caps, cotton wool pads for removing make up. The bedside tables were tiny - hardly enough room for a water glass and a book. There was only one easy chair. There was a tiny shelf in the bathroom - so no where to prop make up and toothpaste. There were no grab rails in the shower for my step father and the loo advertised as disabled was on the ground floor and in constant use by non disabled hotel guests Service in the restaurant Very very slow. There had been a mix up with our table - which seemed to be allocated to a staff party? It took the best part of 2 hours for 2 courses to be finally served. Breakfast A poor standard; my mum was unable to eat her cooked offering on one morning. The sourdough toast which they state is home made is very hard when toasted. My mum asked for some white bread instead - they use thick cut white bread to make a bacon sandwich so we knew that this was in stock. The server seemed to think this was an impossible request and then presented my mum with a wafer thin slice taken from what looked like supermarket cut loaf! Overall - if you approach this as a basic b and b you will not be disappointed.

Very pleasant location with beautiful views of the coast east and west. Varied menu, although I considered it rather pricey. The meal was most enjoyable. Good service. Gratuity was included in the bill, which I do not favour.

It makes a change to be pleasantly surprised by an establishment one has not visited before, disappointment more often being the norm. Midweek lunch was imaginative and excellent. Staff are nicely turned out, friendly and helpful. The rooms and toilets are spotless and the situation perched above the beach affords wonderful views. We will certainly be back.

Superb service, family friendly with amazing sea view and food. Has free parking and kids menu. We ordered oysters, Dover sole and lobster. Everything was very nice except for Dover sole - too charred for our taste.

A superb restaurant with lovely sea views. Very relaxed and suitable for all visitors, no strict dress code. Very friendly and professional staff, delicious food - we couldn't fault a thing, with a menu that was understandably seafood focused. There were other options but with food of this quality I'd recommend fish. (I wouldn't normally order fish but here it is well worth it. Good desserts and cocktails too.

We went for an anniversary lunch today. The greeting was poor after waiting to be seated nobody came out to seat us, so we walked in. The receptionist appeared a little snivelly and unfriendly. The waiter was ok. They charge for bread to have with the fish soup, which wasn't the best fish soup ever My husband had the fish soup and fish stew. The fish was overcooked and he couldn't finish his main course, as he said it tasted a bit of rotting fish My double baked cheese souffle was nice, so 2 stars My aubergine charged at £20 from the set menu was cold and charged out at £20. Was replaced with a lukewarm one. How come the main course is £20.00, not worth it. Place has a dour feeling no buzz and service charge charged automatically. Shame we ate there before, but won't be going back. Jay Rayner your welcome. Best part of the meal was the wine and the view.

Can’t comment on the food / drink as didn’t even get served! Went in for drinks mid-afternoon but there was no one around. Ventured into the bar, but again no barman in sight. After waiting for five minutes, an older lady (manager/owner?) appeared but her expression and attitude would have made you think we’d broken into her house. Abrupt / brisk / rude. Decided to go elsewhere for a drink. You wonder if they want customers. Having read more of the reviews it sounds like this is a reoccurring issue with the staff. Shame, as it’s a fabulous location with a beautiful interior.

Absolutely superb stay at the SBH. Lovely hotel in an amazing location right on the SW coastal path with views over the sea from almost every room. Rooms are large with comfy beds and modern bathrooms. Attention to detail throughout is second to none and the library, bar and restaurant are all great spaces. The food surpassed all expectations - the menu published online looks a little limited, but the menu on the night was fantastic and everything we tried was outstanding. Breakfast was also excellent. Last but not least the staff were friendly, attentive and absolutely on the ball. A really excellent stay and we will be back for sure!

Had supper at SBH. Great location, and staff warm and welcoming. Had a table in the bar, which was lovely. The fresh local sardines were the best we'd ever tasted. Wonderful to have such a broad choice of fresh fish on a menu. The cods roe was delicious. Staff were jolly, and knowledgeable of local attractions. Stayed here a few years ago, and it is a special hotel. The best linen on the beds, and amazing bathrooms. Vibe is very much informal, casual. Love it.

What a joy it is to come to England and be hosted so warmly and attentively without an ounce of pretentiousness. The Seaside boarding house is a gorgeous place tastefully and beautifully done without ever looking like it's trying. It's comfortable and cozy with a nice bar and nicer library to lounge around after a long and inevitably brisk walk along the coast or beach. The restaurant is good, the chairs comfy and the fresh flowers on each table just lovely. The staff are wonderful people and help make the whole experience a 5 star one, at least for me. Grazie

Visited for Saturday lunch, didn't stay over in the accommodation. Thay said, the decor in the rooms downstairs in the restaurants, library or toilets are of high standard. Fantastic big windows looking out to sea, which open up in the summer. Staff were very attentive, extremely friendly. Menu isn't huge, mostly focuses on fish dishes. Other vegetarian options and some beef/chicken too (only for starters at the time I believe). Bathrooms have heavenly scented hand-wash and handcream! Stunning surroundings to walk off the lunch.

Beautiful setting on the clifftop, nice surroundings inside, but the food was really disappointing. The menu looked good, and given the prices we were expecting a really nice meal. Sadly it didn't live up to that. The food was pretty basic, the fish was whole and not filleted or gutted and didn't come with any sauce. The risotto was just a bowl of pine nuts and the partridge a whole bird, again not prepared at all. We didn't bother with dessert as the previous courses had been underwhelming. A shame, doesn't quite live up to expectations. I cannot comment on the rooms which may well be very pleasant.

8 of us went for lunch to celebrate a birthday and the food was excellent. No complaints from any of us. My dish was a gluten free crepe with a delicious topping.

Visited recently for lunch to celebrate a family occasion and we were pleasantly surprised at the excellent food, service and relaxed atmosphere. It has greatly improved compared with several years ago. Every course we ordered was outstanding and cooked perfectly. The views out of the dining room window are spectacular and add to the experience whatever the weather. The service was attentive but not pushy and the whole afternoon was very enjoyable at our own pace. Spectacular sunset views to top it off - if you’re looking for a special place with great food, this is it. Far superior and cheaper than many local pubs -- and we have tried many having lived in the area for almost thirty years. We will be back soon.

Lovely spot, lovely staff. Cocktails a snip from 5pm - 6pm. Don’t go to breakfast if you are in a hurry.

Mother's day set lunch of 2 or 3 courses. No option to have vegetables with your main course. Desert was the best of the 2 courses. An orange juice, lemonade & a white wine cost £18.

Just rung up Seaside boarding house twice as wanted to enquire about bringing my dog. First lady was hostile but ok the second lady however was extremely rude. I said to her hello we previously spoke before i would like to change my table to the dog friendly one and she rudely interrupted me and said “UM no you did not speak to me so if you could tell me what this is about..” the tone was incredibly rude. Now I do not want to eat dinner there.

I was working at the seaside boarding house for a wedding. I wasn’t feeling very well & was exhausted. The staff were so kind giving me blankets and making sure I was okay. I really appreciated their kindness especially that day after having an awful morning before I arrived for work. A huge thank you to the staff for being such lovely people and going out of their way. It meant so much.

So much is right about this place - wonderful location, friendly and helpful staff, tasteful decorations and furniture. However, the owners appear to be on auto-pilot, relying on the positives to outweigh the negatives, which they are simply not addressing. For example, we waited for over 90 minutes for breakfast. There were repeated apologies and indications that it would come soon. However, it did not. The talk between the five or six tables that were occupied was all about the wait. In the end, we gave up and left the restaurant. One other table did the same. I’ve since learned from others who’ve stayed at the hotel that this is a recurring theme, as is the obvious understaffing that causes it. Another example of the complacent ownership / management is that the extract fan serving the kitchen is loud, and the noise invades all of the bedrooms to the rear of the hotel, as well as all the rooms along one side. How much would it take to replace the extract with a quieter one? Such a shame.

I've left it a while to review as I was waiting for a reply to the 2-3 emails I'd sent. Christmas 2021 - took my Mum for a Christmas treat, amazing experience; beautiful food, friendly and efficient service, felt like a really special occasion. Worth every penny. Christmas 2022 - hoped for the same lovely treat for my Mum. Quite disappointing, service was bordering on hostile, at best resentful - understandable as it's tough working Christmas day but horrible to be at the recieving end of that. Food was patchy, some bits perfect (beef), other bits - appeared to be cooked without any care and seemed to have sat under a heat lamp for quite some time (mushy, over cooked sides). Some things completely missing from the dishes, with no obvious replacement. Service was very slow and we were asked to move before finishing. We felt like an inconvenience for most of the lunch. Not wanting to make a fuss on the day, (a few people were complaining and it looked like the staff had had enough), I emailed, hoping for some explanation - staff shortages or something.... No reply, nor any reply to my follow ups. I've previously viewed the seaside boarding house as somewhere to treat friends and family for a special occasion but this was so disappointing, I won't risk it again.

Came for a meal at the weekend, food very disappointing, staff attentive and friendly but let down by v avg food. Had the fish for a main it was very rubbery and overcooked, sauce was very bland and under seasoned. Charging high prices for substandard quality. Partner had the lamb, which was tasty but nothing special

Had an amazing time celebrating my friends’ wedding at the Seaside Boarding House. The service was top notch, the staff was extremely friendly, efficient and welcoming. We loved the food which was delicate and refreshing. The cocktails were very good in particular the sunset tequila. The view was outstanding. Thank you for having us, we had a really great time!

This venue is impeccably rin by Mary Lou and her first class team all of which deserve praise for their kindness and attention . The experience is like being in a top liner enhanced by the adjacent sea.

Nice restaurant but significantly over priced. Classic simple recipes. One of the weaker restaurants in the Michelin guide. The beach side restaurants offered better value for money and quality

We had one of most magical weekends here. The location, the hospitality and the food is a five star experience. Wish I could give more. Thank you, Mary-Lou and the wonderful crew.

We spent a beautiful mini-moon at the Seaside Boarding House. What a delightful stay we had. The food is define, the rooms elegant and stylish and the hosts warm and friendly. Also, the views are spectacular and you're a stone's throw from the beach. It's a wonderful place to stay with the perfect combination of luxury, fine food and beautiful views from your bedroom window.

Our third and longest stay. Well looked after by the team with a lovely, relaxed informal atmosphere. Breakfasts outstanding and the evening meals we had were great too. Looking forward to our next visit.

The seaside boarding house is one of those unique places. It feels traditional, a throw back to days gone by, but at the same time truly modern. We ate in the restaurant and the food was exquisite. The service was perfect and never intrusive. It is beside the sea, we entered from the beach, but also private.

Absolutely wonderful, unique place to stay. A very special atmosphere, with very helpful , friendly and welcoming staff. Decor eclectic, and tasteful. Bedrooms simply styled. No TV or coffee facilities in room.... so you are able to enjoy the peace and be waited on for all your needs. The menu is fresh and reflects it's seaside position, beautifully prepared and presented.

👍 Can’t fault the food or staff. Excellent in both areas Very dog friendly. Small car park. Often booked solid, so worth making a reservation if you want to sit inside. Otherwise, outside is first-come-first-served. It’s worth the effort, one of the best Palmer Brewery sites.

👍 This is a good swimming pool for younger children. You can use the pool even if you aren’t staying on the site (free parking).
