Very good experience. It was the only prison in Scotland from 1888. Before that, the convicts were send to England. The audio guide is brilliant. You see all the prison and of course you wish you will never get there. The stories are also amazing. The local food from the buffet are tasty..imagine eating in a prison. Almost 2 hours spent there even though we were in hurry.

What an interesting place to go to visit. Very cold inside so wear a jacket ! The staff working there are very friendly. Well worth the entrance fee which was not that expensive. It also has a great cafe !

Absolutely amazing! Great place to visit to understand some fascinating history of this famous jail. Thoroughly recommend a trip here! The audio tour is really easy to use and follow. Great day out with lots of interesting stories and facts of the life of prisoners that served time here. Very disabled friendly with lots of seats available throughout the tour, which I found extremely helpful due to my physical disability. There is a lift to get up to the cafe, so I think there is a way for wheelchair users to get around too. Fantastic day 😁

Really good place to visit. Would be even better if you could go upstairs and wonder for a bit but regardless it was still good and interesting. Caffee could be better with more sitting. I understand that there is sociap distancing in place but few tables outside would be nice.

Just visited Peterhead prison museum. Absolutely brilliant. Walking round listening to the stories and sounds of prison life was so interesting. You can walk round at your own pace and there are bonus stories to listen to if you like. Lovely, friendly staff, thoroughly recommend.

This is probably one of the best museums I've been to and it's very reasonably priced too. When you enter the museum you are given a head set and controller so you can listen to the information at your own pace. It is definitely an eye opener to how prison life has changed throughout the years! There is also a small cafe near the end of the tour and the cakes are amazing. Definitely worth a visit 5*

Brilliant!! Wasn't sure what to expect here, but it's a very well thought out museum visit and very interesting. The headsets provided are an absolute must. The staff are very pleasant, there's a shop and cafe too. The lifeboat at the end of the visit was just the cherry on the cake. 🍒🍰 Well worth a visit. 👌

Really enjoyed visiting the museum. We paid in advance on the Internet, you save a bit of money doing this. We came at about 10am, the place was nearly empty. It was really interesting to see what life was like on the inside. I don't use audio guides often but this one was really interesting and concise. Took us about 2 hours to visit it.

One of the most interesting museums I've ever been too. Great family afternoon out, my wife and teenage boys enjoyed it too. Staff were excellent and very friendly from the entrance, all through the visit and in the cafe, which was very nice. Can't recommend highly enough and only £20 for a family ticket. Great value.

Took a visit to the old Peterhead Prison which closed in 2013 after 125 years in operation, it was converted into a Museum opening in June 2016. Infamously known for being notorious and once home to some of Scotland's most dangerous, it provides a detailed look into its history and the grim conditions which led to the riot of October 1987.. On my visit to the museum I was fortunate enough to meet Jackie Stuart who was held hostage for five days during the riot and he signed a copy of his book for me, a very pleasant man. It is situated in a remote area between Fraserburgh and Aberdeen but if nothing ever gets done with Barlinnie after it closes then this will be the the only place to go.. Definitely worth the visit.

This is a fascinating look at the prison system throughout the years. With no waits and some pretty gruesome tails we spent most of the morning and had a nice lunch there. The audio tour was interesting and easy to navigate the staff were friendly and very helpful.

Update- Took my son back again, this time to do the brand new View from Above, tour. Wow, absolutely incredible. To be able to go to the upper levels and learn in detail how and why the riot started was amazing. Loved every minute of it. Highly recommend. Took my 11 year old son, and we both loved. So interesting. Staff are super friendly and helpful. Not expensive. Loved the headsets for listening as you walk round

It's just fine, interesting history and friendly staff. I which you could se a little more og the prison cells and other things. But by the end of the day a fine experience.

Brilliant place to visit - gives an excellent insight to prison life. The audio headsets were the best we've experienced on self guided tours. All the commentary points are well marked and you can go at your own pace. It is mostly inside but you go outside to cross to the hospital block. Being next to the sea it can be cold so better to be prepared for this. There is an excellent cafe at the end of the tour aptly named The Cell View. Very friendly staff in reception, shop and cafe. Would highly recommend this if you are anywhere near in the area. A welcome change from the castles and gardens that we usually visit.

Both fascinating and terrifying. Its not been too "museumed" basically it is as it was when it closed. We went mid December, it was freezing ... dress up warm. Apparently it s chilly even in summer. It feels like a terrible place to be in (as a prisoner). Excellent use of mannequins. Great audio tour. Nice wee cafe ... in winter the big cafe isn't open.

  • 5/5 Christine B. 11 months ago on Google
This place is of historical interest and is well worth seeing. At the end of the tour there is a cafe which you can visit without doing the tour. Lovely food, freshly made and friendly staff. I had a delicious lunch this visit and recommend it for anyone living in the area to support. You won't be disappointed.

I recently visited the Peterhead Prison Museum and took part in the guided tour with pre-recorded audio, The tour was pretty fascinating, and the audio excellent, having been in this prison in the 70s myself it was kind of surreal to see it in its current state, so quiet and eerie compared to the actual noise and mayhem that I experienced and remembered, great tour tho and you might ask why I’d come back after being in it well the answer is plain and simple that although it was a bad experience at the time it wasn’t all doom and gloom, The stories were engaging but my memories were much more interesting tho not for public airing, as they say what happens in Peterhead stays in Peterhead. I highly recommend this tour to anyone interested in learning about the history of the prison, only downside for me was I couldn’t get upstairs to see my old “Peter” but at least this time I could walk back out at my leisure, oh and give the wee Cafe a try if you’ve got time though not sure if they serve porridge or not lol….

Very interesting place, well worth a visit, so much history. Today's prisoners get it easy compared to those of yesteryear. Not to be missed 🙂

We have been wanting to visit here for a while after seeing such brilliant reviews and it didn’t let us down! My husband and I were so pleasantly surprised by the experience we had this weekend. The headphones and audio guide (that are included in the entrance fee of £12pp) are fantastic. Informative and succinct details that really give you an insight into life in the prison from 1880s all the way to 2013 when it shut. The scents that we are convinced were added to certain rooms certainly added to the immersive experience👃🏼and all the staff were wonderful and very welcoming. We were fortunate enough to meet Mr Jackie Stewart and buy his book which tells such a fascinating story of the riots in 1987 and his miraculous escape at the hands of the prisoners. A true credit to the SPS!! We also visited the cafe for our lunch which was fantastic and exactly what we needed after the tour. We will definitely be recommending the museum to everyone we know.

Interesting to get a walk round the old prison, audio guide is good too. Small cafe at the end but nice bowl of soup to warm you up after a chilly day. Be warned that it's quite cold even inside the old buildings!

Really fantastic couple of hours. A great attraction that i wish i had visited sooner. Tour is done at your own pace with headphones and audio pack to describe various parts of the old prison. Some great stories of all kinds that go with the tour. Not for young ones, might get bored or scared!! I had 2 teenage boys with me and they thought it was magic.

This is a great museum ! It's fascinating to walk around the cell blocks, and get an insight into being a prisoner and what it was like to work there. The audio guide is excellent. Each topic is a few minutes only so not tedious or boring. It does feel gross as well, to see / hear some of stories but so much better for having this, I'd say. Very good cafe too.
