This is well worth a visit so is the iron age which is still being excavated. I worked with the Time Team when they first came to excavate the site. It is one of the iron forts in Wales. The church was only decommissioned as a church in the late 1970s and became derelict, there is a group of volunteers trying to rebuild it. Be warned it is a very steep climb to get there.

History in Ely Cardiff.... Caer means Fort in Welsh hence Caerdydd Caerleon etc.... Caerau Hill Fort is hidden in plain sight unless you look for you will not find it ....Iocated alongside St Mary's Church sadly a ruin of its former self due to fire and vandals.. the Hillfort command's views over Cardiff to Caerphilly and mountains beyond. Only a 10 min walk from you parked car or nearest bus stop...Well worth a visit . So enjoy some free adventures, history and views 🙌 😎 😀

Serene, lightly haunting and picturesque at the same time. It's a shame the beautiful church has reduced to ruins. This place is supposed to be the oldest establishment of humans in the region.

A place of great historical interest for those that are onto or want to get into history at different levels. In summer there are local groups that get together and do a dig of different sections of this ancient hillfort site it dates back a very long time to Neolithic times as I understand it.

Fascinating hilltop site on the edge of the Cardiff suburb of Ely/Caerau from which the Celtic tribe, the Silures - much-respected opponents of the Romans - ruled SE Wales. Much earlier origins date it back nearly 4000 years BC. Best visited outside winter as there is a possibly muddy climb through woodland to the top, from which its spectacular position commanding surrounding countryside can be seen. An onsite visitor centre offers explanatory panels and also serves as the hub for a range of very worthwhile community projects.

Great place to walk the dog especially with someone who's been on an archaeological dig up there who can tell you all about it!

It's a field on top of a hill. From what we could see there isn't any evidence of the old hill top fort but there is a nice old derelict church tucked just below the top of the hill. Apparently they are going to excavate the fort and open a visitor centre which I imagine will be good, from the top of the hill you have a commanding view of Cardiff which is always nice. Be warned though the path up to the top is steep and when we went very boggy and muddy, there is a concrete path but this was covered with vegetation. I would highly recommend going, the dog loved it and is now snoring her head off!

Good place for people who like to walk uphill to see some heritage remains of church. No parking, just a walkway leads up from church Road nearby

Amazing to see this site of an old iron age hill fort. Unfortunately, over the years the church has fallen into ruin and graves damaged.
