Another fabulous tour with Alex at Iles tours today. A rare opportunity to go up Grey's Monument and learn the history of Northumberland St. Alex is so informative and his enthusiastic delivery brings history to life. Very professional whilst being very amiable. He definitely would gives Dan Snow a run for his money if he was on TV.

My wife & I went on Alex's Grey's Monument tour recently, and I went on his Swing Bridge tour on 25th September. We can't speak too highly of both of these. Alex is really friendly and helpful and is amazingly knowledgeable about the history of Newcastle - and is so enthusiastic about it! He has clearly researched his information in great detail and puts it over in a very interesting way. Each tour lasted about an hour and a half, starting with a leisurely walk along the streets around the final destinations, with Alex picking out fascinating buildings, landmarks etc and filling us in on their stories. The views from the top of Grey's Monument were superb, and Alex was on hand to describe and explain what we were seeing. Unfortunately a few days before the Swing Bridge tour Alex had to email those booked on the tour to apologise that the Port of Tyne authority was, owing to unforeseen circumstances, unable to provide a member of staff to allow us into the control booth and engine room of the bridge. Clearly this was completely outside Alex's control and he gave us the opportunity to cancel for a refund or go ahead with an extended Quayside tour, which three of us accepted: it was certainly worthwhile. We still finished up beside the bridge, so Alex was able to point as much as he could from outside - and after relating its history he showed us photos of the engine room and gave us a full (and fascinating) description of how it (should) work (it's been out of action following the Covid pandemic having been unused for 18 months). I can't recommend Alex's tours too highly - they certainly exceeded our expectations and were very good value indeed.

Alex is incredibly friendly and knowledgeable! We learned an exceptional amount about Roman history as well as the history of the area. He was able to answer all of our questions about Hadrian’s wall and more. Highly recommend him for any tour.

Loved the tour of Northumberland Street and Greys Monument. Our guide was friendly and very professional. Can't get over how much knowledge he has I could never remember a fraction of it. It was lovely to learn new things about the city I live in. The climb to the top of the Monument was worth it, amazing views all over Newcastle. Brilliant Tour and Guide Thank you

Great way for 3 generations of our family to explore Newcastle. Alex has an amazing knowledge of local history and we found out so many interesting stories behind the buildings and places and even got to see the inner workings of the Swing Bridge on our heritage walk.

We booked a tour for Greys monument and around, we really liked it. It was a really rainy day but we enjoyed it anyway because of Alex. He welcomed us with a big smile and shared part of Newcastle's history that we would have ever none! He truly loves what he is doing! It just gives you another point of view of the city! The top of Greys monument is really beautiful too.

Alex took us on a small group on a tour of the Newcastle quayside and inside the Swing Bridge. Great tour as Alex is so knowledgable and informative. Highly recommend to both visitors and locals.

Last week had the most enjoyable couple of hours in Newcastle on the Walking Tour learning all about the city, a city I thought I knew well having spent many summers as a child visiting grandparents across the river in Gateshead. My guide Alex has an amazing memory for the historical facts but combines this with those lovely extra fascinating snippets of information you can only glean from someone who knows the city intimately. Thank you Isles Tours for a well organised trip and a great afternoon.

Our History tour of Newcastle with Alex was fantastic. It was a pleasure to deal with Iles Tours from booking to the tour end. The communication prior to the tour start was excellent and gave us clear information about what to expect and where to meet. During the tour Alex was extremely knowledgeable and responded to questions and engaged the audience with stories and lesser known historical facts. This was not a monologue of facts but an engaging stroll through history with a gifted story teller as guide. I look forward to booking another of Alex's tours in future and don't hesitate to recommend Iles Tours.

Old Newcastle Tour gave us an insight into the past of our home town that we'd never encountered before! Alex is a knowledgeable and interesting guide, his enthusiasm shines through his presentation. We're already planning a future tour with him. Thanks Alex!

We unconditionally and enthusiastically recommend Iles Tours for any tour in the North of England. On May 17, Alex Iles picked us up at our hotel in Durham and drove us to the central portion of Hadrian’s Wall for a walk (climb) as well as tours of Houseteads Roman Fort and the Vindolanda Fort & Museum. All along the way we learned a tremendous amount of Roman and pre-Roman history, as well as general and specific information about the area through which we travelled. Alex is a Ph.D candidate — I believe in archaeology of the Roman period and earlier — and a veritable fount if knowledge. His discussions were detailed and even scholarly when our questions required such, but completely accessible and captivating even to someone with little background knowledge. He tailored his commentary to our expressed interests but still introduced us to countless new things. It was a thoroughly enjoyable day. The next time we visit the North of England, we look forward to connecting with Alex again.
