I recently rode at Fort Widley after having ridden for many years in Cornwall and moving to the local area. I considered myself able to ride with some experience working around horses, however, the experience at Fort Widley is enough to knock anyone's confidence. On one occasion there were perhaps 40 horses in one 20 x 40m school, jammed tail to tail on two circles, with complete beginners mixed among more experienced riders which was chaos and absolutely unsafe! Equipment was worn and frayed and never checked by instructors beforehand, they just assume you will adjust your own stirrups and girth. At another point in the lesson before mine one of the horses spooked and bolted across the arena with a small child clinging to its neck, to which the instructor laughed and told her to 'get on with it' even though the child was crying and obviously upset. Overall I found this riding school very unsafe and badly organised with hardly any actual instruction in the lessons. I had a different instructor and a different horse every lesson for the few months I rode there which felt like starting again every lesson as I would have to explain to each new instructor my riding ability, to which they would take no notice. I have since moved to another riding school which I have found substantially better with a much better learning environment.

Wonderful use of an old 'Palmerston Follie'. Plenty of off road parking. Safe environment and wonderful views of the harbour and beyond. Keep local businesses going and support ventures such as this. The community is so much better for their being.

I watched my daughter's riding lesson recently with her University group and I was very impressed with this riding school. The location was amazing and unique. All staff were really helpful and friendly. The horses looked very well looked after. Tack was in great condition. Very secure and safe. Professional. I used to have horses and ridden all my life, so seeing a place like this with horses so cared was a pleasure.

Intresting Fort to visit as part of a series of Forts around, wonderfull views, is currently been used for private industrial units as well a Horse Riding School. The rides provide a very good views allround the Fort from bouth sides. The grounds were well kept and the hills provided good views either side of the fort. Also there was free parking and a nice view point overseeing Portsmouth bay.

*EDITED SINCE COVID AND STAFF CHANGE... RERURNED after Covid to find staff change and daughter needing to b reassessed which was reasonable although procedure was totally different from first time. Upon arrival there was no hand wash or sanitisation station. Before Covid my daughter and myself rode here for a year with no issues. At the new assessment she was asked to get on a mechanical 'horse' in a building with lights going out and myself having to rush to turn them back on. This was an awful experience for my daughter and she was unable to help to cope with what was being asked of her. I'm pleased to say since this we have had a friend invite us to ride and my daughter has got back in the saddle, not mechanical lol, and returned to love riding as much as possible she did before this off putting experience. Lovely staff especially Georgia, Katherine and Marcell...

Fantastic stables with excellent instructors and lovely ponies. Our daughter has some processing difficulties so they conducted an assessment on a mechanical horse with us initially which my daughter thought was very funny. Since then she has had regular lessons with them and joined pony club - they've been very welcoming to her and understanding of her challenges. I'd love it if you could see more of the inside of the stables but I understand that isn't possible right now because of covid. I'd highly recommend the stables to anyone looking to start riding regardless of age.

Highly recommend this riding school! Everyone is very kind and every riding lesson is different, great and fun. I’ve learned a lot! Horses are very well looked and all of them are amazing and also the whole Fort Widley equestrian team is amazing.

Lovely setting although some of the infrastructure is tired and shabby. It would be great to see it restored to its former glory.

Bouldering - we normally visit when we get bored at our local gym or we fancy some real rock style climbing which is close to home. Lovely place and I enjoy the rock room just not keen on the other room, some routes do not make sense or the grades are questionable. As always I will return ✌️

A very important part of history in the area and one of 7 Palmerston Forts located in Portsmouth, they date back to the 1800's and were built to resist the French invasion
