I recently visited Ruta restaurant with my husband and two American friends, and we had a wonderful experience. The restaurant is a great place to try authentic Ukrainian cuisine or to feel at home if you're feeling homesick. We ordered several dishes including borsch, vinaigrette, deruny, holubtsi (cabbage rolls), and varenyky, and all of them were absolutely delicious. In fact, the cabbage rolls were even better than what my own mother makes! One thing that really stood out to us was the excellent service. The waiters were very polite and patient, and they even helped our American friends choose their meals. The only downside was that there were no Ukrainian wines on the menu, but we hope that this will be added in the near future. Although we were too full to try any desserts, we definitely plan on returning to Ruta restaurant to try them out. Overall, it was a great dining experience and we highly recommend it to anyone looking for authentic Ukrainian cuisine and great service.

Great place! Food is authentic Ukrainian and delicious! Not too much space but hopefully they grow bigger! Drinks were also delicious! Make reservations before you go, the bar area is tight and waiting area as well. Wishing them to open a three times bigger place because people love this place!

What an amazing restaurant! Our group had a celebratory holiday dinner last night, and the staff took such good care of us. It felt like we were having a Christmas meal at home! Every dish was super tasty and came out nice and hot. The cocktails were fun and creative too. The atmosphere was warm and friendly and great for a get together with colleagues. I highly recommend this place to anyone in DC, especially if you're looking to support our Ukrainian friends and family during the war πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡¦πŸšœπŸ›₯️πŸ’ͺ

The honey cake is so delicious!!! The chicken kyiv is ok, the bass is over cooked and bland, the beef stroganoff is terrible and the dumplings are all bland. Overall, I don't recommend it for savory food but the honey cake is worth the visit.

Great place with authentic food and great exported Ukrainian beer. The staff was very friendly: although there were no available tables, we could stay at the bar. Ordered a mix of varenyky (aka pierogi), banosh, and chicken Kiev. All were great! 5 stars!

This restaurant has exceptional food served by exceptional people. Most of the staff are recent refugees, fleeing the war in Ukraine. They are kind, proud of their country and proud to introduce their culture to you through their delectable cuisine. The food here is really good and not commonly found in much of the U.S. I thoroughly enjoyed my dinner, from the food to the people to the ambiance. Highly recommend!

The only Ukrainian restaurant that you'll ever want to visit. They set the bar for what is usually considered "Eastern European" ... And then moved it again. Fabulous drinks, you'll want to try the "Patriot" or "HIMARS", and a wonderful atmosphere. The Kyiv chicken and beef stroganoff was quite possibly the best we've ever had. We'll be back.

Overall I Just wanted to say that I was very much excited to try the new restaurant. I really wanted to like it. Overall grade: C-, will come back there only if a very close friend insists. πŸ“ Location: It's located near the capital northeast of washington dc. The neighborhood is reasonably pretty and clean.. Parking is extremely limited. πŸͺ‘ The ambience of the establishment greatly resembles a soviet-era eatery with small plastic tables elbow-to-elbow and paintings of our leaders or, in this case, ukrainian royalty on the walls. The furniture is dusty pink grandmother color that clashed is with just about anything people wear. there the portraits of supposedly ukrainian royalty not much to look at. The plates served for entrees are actually dessert plates. πŸ«‚ When I say tables are elbow to elbow that's what I mean. It's literally a row of plastic tables against the wall and whether you like it or not you are in for a communal dining Experience. A couple sitting next to me was practically whispering and I still couldn't avoid listening in. ⏰️ It took fourteen minutes for the waitress to approach me and ask me for my order. She was very sweet and cute and apologized. Previously when I fled out asked her why it took such a long time. She responded that she did not notice me there. She brought me a shot of cranberry vodka as an apology. Vodka was actually pretty terrible, very diluted and tasted like syrup more than an adult drink. Not one person there looked professional. Half of the staff had their hair down. Even people in the kitchen. Water boy and man were less than friendly. πŸ“„ The menu was unclear about half of the dishes. Agree with the other review that they need to get Restaurant 101 consulting for their menu and coursing order 🎢 Ukrainian music was OK. Didn't love it. πŸ› The dish I ordered was stuffed cabbage leaves and it was pretty deisn't but seemed on a much smaller side than what i'm used to and slightly overseasoned. The family to the left of me ordered a dish that I was actually considering which was burrata and beets, And I'm so glad that the dish was brought out before. I ordered it because it was literally Five slices of beats and a piece of cheese. Also they got The dumplings . Just four random dumplings thrown on a plate with a little shower cream. The couple to the right of me ordered polenta Which seems questionable.. The guys certainly didn't seem excited eating it. The girl ordered chicken kiev Which I was also considering. Again it was tiny and bred out On a small dessert plate. I think on top of a piece of bread but it might be wrong on that. They're honeycake Did not look like honeycake, With thick layers of cream. 🎀 Have you ever cringed at a birthday song? Well I did today. How can one screw up a birthday song beats me, But apparently That waitress is Is waiting to be discovered opera singer. She was loud. She was off beat. I thought I was going to die. Cringe cringe unhear. Terrible.

I do recommend to visit this restaurant! Amazing food, feels like homy food that my Ukrainian family would cook, their dishes have a very β€œtrue” taste, it doesn’t taste over salty or spicy, just enough to open the the whole flavor of a dish. In general Ukrainian cuisine tends to be healthy: a lot of veggies and less of processing. Also, thank you for such a friendly and responsive service, I was lucky to have a very nice waitress who helped me with all of my requests 🌸

I brought a group of Polish friends to Ruta. We were looking for authentic Ukrainian food and that is exactly what we received. The Borscht was perfect. It's my favorite soup. Every entree was perfect. I want to come back again to try something different. I am sure I will be back soon.

I love Ruta! Fun little spot right next to the Eastern Market metro stop. Had great service and some nice outdoor seating. I loved the cocktail list, and the varnyky to start are a must. I also had the stroganoff, and it was fantastic. So was dessert. I’ll definitely be going back soon!

I had a lovely meal here. My dining companion was Ukrainian-American so she understood the whole menu, but the server answered all our questions. They've made some adjustments to cater to American tastes, but our food was excellent. We had dumplings to start, and then I had great Chicken Kyiv served with mashed potatoes and sautΓ©ed mushrooms. All accompanied by nice Italian wine. We went early because we were going to Shakespeare at the Folger, so our reservation might not have been necessary but by 6:30, the place was full. So make sure to get a reservation.

My friend and I visited Ruta for brunch during my weekend in DC, and it was magical! Seeing Ukrainian dishes presented with such pride and artistry was amazing. The service was excellent, and the food was even better. The nalysnyky (Ukrainian crepes stuffed with mushrooms) and uzvar (similar to fruit punch) were particularly delicious. I also appreciated the wall mural done in a traditional Ukrainian art style and the gallery of artworks with nods to Ukrainian history. I’ll definitely be back whenever I’m in DC.

Very nice place. Amazing food! I had beef stroganoff with mashed potatoes (they've kindly accommodated my request). I will definitely come back here when I have a chance.

My friends and I had a very good time at Ruta. The food came out quickly and was very tasty. We ordered borsch, deruny, and varenyky to start, and chicken Kyiv and Holubtsy as our mains. For dessert we had honey cake and Kyiv cake. The only dish that was so-so was varenyky but the rest was great. Also our server Lyzaveta was very friendly and attentive. We will come back for sure.

The food (which we only ordered what the servers recommended) was incredible, and just as authentic as the food were the servers themselves. Fantastic service and very accommodating for our toddler and reserving us a table when we arrived a little before they opened. Saw them do a staff meeting right before opening to make sure they were all set to go, and the staff truly appeared to enjoy working there and sharing traditions of Ukraine. Will eat there again and highly recommend to friends in DC!

Lovely cafe! Food was beautiful and delicious. Interior is adorable! Went for lunch- unfortunately the staff is not super informed on what’s gluten free but I knew I’d be safe with the omelette. Looked at the dinner menu and it notes gluten free items (yay!) and I think there may a few more they overlooked labeling…buckwheat for example is a root and not related to wheat. Will return!

I don’t think it is open yet; I spent the last year in ukraine assisting people fleeing. I will come and find you and ask some directed question if you are taking advantage of people in need.
