Very nice place! Great location, we love visiting here! Nice family location. Beautiful grounds, and nice to take your pets for a walk, or as a family to go walking. Big parking lot as well. We love their walking trails!

This is a great place to spend some time and is definitely worth a visit. Entry fee is only $1 but you can leave a donation if you enjoyed your visit. There are a full range of pieces from sailing boats to historical artifacts. There is a viewing area where you can see artifacts in various stages of restoration. There are restored artifacts on display. There are knowledgeable staff walking around who are eager to answer any questions that you may have. There is an outside walking park but wasn't able to do it due to bad weather on the day of our visit. There is a gift shop and cafe on site.

Took my 5yr old son here on a relaxing Saturday. We had fun completing the scavenger hunt the front desk gave us. Museum only charged around $2 that day. No lines and not busy but a lot to see.

We spent most of our time at the excellent exhibit about the steam ironclads USS Monitor and the CSS Virginia and their epic battle at Hampton Roads, Va, in 1862. A very comprehensive and fascinating exhibit which sets that event in context. Sorry to discover the cafe is closed for renovations, but the $1.00 entrance fee is simply amazing! Plan to return to see the rest of the museum and enjoy the grounds.

This museum is great. Extremely well done. With a $1 entrance fee, I had low expectations but this museum impressed around every corner. It focuses on the "Merrimack and Monitor" ships primarily, but it never gets boring. Quality displays that provided plenty of interesting information in a variety of formats. There's also a park that looked great, but we didn't have time to visit. This museum is well worth the stop.

Went jere to run the Noland Trail. Great trail with scenic views and challenging terrain. Great for challenging 5 mike trail run. I ran it twice since I was looking to get 20 miles in and it gave me all I could handle. Great spot!!

Stunning natural beauty. Stopped by on a whim. Took a short walk on the Norton Trail. Came to the bridge and stopped there. Absolutely the most peaceful place. Then I looked down over the water and saw the 🐢 🐢 🐢 turtles. Wow...beautiful creatures. These aren't the loggerheads by the sea, these are Snapping turtles of various sizes. Amazing sight. Do not feed any wild life in any park. But especially here. These turtles can snap a finger in a minute. I watched them from the bridge. Safe distance...next time I'll go further. Loved it💜

Loved it!! I'm visiting from GA and didn't really know much about it. The Battle Theater movie is a MUST and it was very educative on what happened between the two ironclads. The rest of the exhibits made a lot more sense once I watched that. The life size Monitor was fun to walk on, and the small part of the replica CSS Virginia that you can go inside was fun too. The scavenger hunt for kids kept everyone super attentive and involved and because it's basically just a checklist, kids of most ages can participate. We had a wonderful time!! I highly recommend it if you're in the area. Plus, it's only $1!!

Really amazing place with lots of interesting history. Much larger than it appears, you can spend an entire afternoon and still not see everything, especially if the weather is since so the outdoor items are viewable.

This is an amazing museum. I loved all the boats on display. The staff was very friendly. An employee named Aaron Stone went out of his way to make sure my visit was amazing. He answered all my questions and I learned alot while here.

Dont forget to go outside to the hanger they have out back not much signs mentioning it but there a ton of different kinds of boats out there, very nice. This was a beautiful museum to go to! It was surprisingly large, with lots of information on different vessels and maritime events. This place included beautifully detailed hand-made models of ships, real vessels, shipwrecked parts of the USS Monitor, and a full sized replica of the USS Monitor. There was also an extremely large park you could enter for free, with lots of wildlife. This is a beautiful place to spend an afternoon at!!

Beautiful museum! Great for families! Admission was only $1 when we visited. There was something for everyone here. Children's area, amazing artifacts, and emersive exhibits. Our favorite was the miniature ship models. The kids loved the scavenger hunt. Everyone working here was so friendly. The cafe was closed the day we went. However, there are great places to eat nearby.

Really cool experience! They have so much to see there at the museum. There are displays and models ranging from the 1500s to present. Definitely a great place to take ship fans. The entry prices are real cheap. The museum also has old pieces of the USS Monitor (Iron clad) being preserved in an exibit.

We learned so much, and entry was only $1 each. It took us 2.5 hrs to get through the first half. However, we read everything and looked at everything thoroughly. We Want to go back next time we are in VA as they were setting up for a new exhibit.

Great museum for all ages. Also history is being restored in front of your eyes! Having the actual first Ironside that you can see and almost touch is amazing! I can't wait until it's all finished! I was with my sister and her family and had fun playing large scale battleship and exploring with them. Highly recommend this to anyone in the area!

Couldn't pass up $1 museum admission! Really neat museum and they have a nice play area for kids with a giant battleship game. One part of the museum is full of model ships, including one of the titanic, and there is a model ship maker you can watch as he works. There's also a full scale USS Monitor replica and you can walk the deck of the ship. Upstairs you can look into the Batton Conservation Complex and watch recovered portions of the Monitor undergoing conservation treatment.

This museum is a paradise for any naval or military historian, as well as for anyone that has sailed on the sea. The employees were all passionate and helpful, and there are plenty of things for kids to do, including a scavenger hunt. The museam is wonderfully curated and took about three hours to go through, and the cafe had fairly priced food and drinks.

Wonderful museum! All of the exhibits are well thought out and informative. We came for the Monitor exhibit and were not disappointed. The America's Cup exhibit was fantastic as well. If you're a history buff or a Mariner, plan to spend a solid half day here. We'll be back!

Wonderful museum!! Tickets were only $1! Staff were so nice and welcoming and were a wealth of information! There were two free movies throughout the museum and lots of hands on activities for kids. You could spend a whole day here reading everything.

The Mairiners Museum is a fun and easy way to spend a lazy afternoon. Plus there is a beautiful walking trail that goes around the lake that it sits on (Noland Trail). You could easily spend your day there hiking and visiting the museum afterwards. Highlights include the America's Cup speed and innovation area featuring the 2013 winning catamaran the Orical. Fun to watch digital features, inspiring stories and gain understanding of hydrodynamics. The Crabtree display of models is really interesting and easy to miss. In a dark room, backlit hand crafted models carved with the most intricate hands are on display. Make sure to locate it on your map, or you may walk right by the little room off to the side. Many more interesting artifacts and stories await you at this museum. AND during certain times of the year, it's only $1 per person. They also have a Cafe and a gift shop. Enjoyable for the whole family young and old.

Awesome place to check out anything Hampton Roads boat related. Lots of information and historical viewpoints on local history and the Battle of the Monitor and Merrimack. Cool selection and section of antique model ships. Would highly recommend checking out if in the area. Adult price is $1 for admission and well worth it!

Great museum so much to do there. Its a great place for kids and so much hard work goes into the place. I volunteer there and there is so much work behind the scenes that made me appreciate there museum so much more.

My wife and I really enjoyed this museum! The entry price is $1. You can’t beat that! The boats they had were very cool to look at and the history was enjoyable. One complaint I would have is that one part of the museum seems to be celebrating a victory of the confederate war ships, I wouldn’t choose to celebrate any of their victories…. But besides that we had a blast!

This place was phenomenal. We had two adults, one 10-year-old, and one four year old in the party. Everybody was fascinated all day. I had no idea the history and culture of boating was so varied. I thought it would be like a boat show and we would stay an hour max before the four year old became bored out of his mind. Five hours later, the four-year-old didn’t want to leave and I was exhausted. The exhibit about the first two iron clad ships was interesting and re-created the race between the north and south to build them as well as their battle. The favorite place of everybody though was the international small craft exhibit which showed small boats throughout history from around the world. They have an exhibit for kids, and ours loved being able to touch things, but they were happy to leave and go look at other things as well. They had a history of the Navy exhibit which included an enigma machine!

A wonderful museum with lots to look at and loads of information. Their main features are the USS Monitor and the CSS Virginia, as well as their scale model ships which are beautifully crafted.

  • 5/5 Fred B. 2 years ago on Google
So much history! Even besides the incredible history of the USS Monitor there is scores about the CSS Virginia and the age of sail and even a life size replica of the Monitor herself! Admission is dirt cheap at only a dollar per person. There is an immersive environment complete with replicas of ships, guns, and videos of actors recreating people who were there.

We spent nearly 3 hours in the museum, which cost us only $1 each. It was well laid out and very informative. It described the story of the ironclad ships, the Merrimac and the Monitor, and there were reconstructions of the Monitor's turret as well as the entire ship. It was really interesting to see the actual turret being treated/preserved in a giant tank in the museum. Our only disappointment was that the cafe was closed. We then walked the 5-mile Noland trail around the park. This is a well- marked path with 14 large wooden bridges.

We were originally going for the trail, but since it was too cold, we ended up checking out the museum. It was perfect for the family, no wait, period. The layout is very detailed, and they also have interactive spaces for kids. It turned out to be bigger than what we expected it to be. The best part is that the entrance fee is $1 per person and free parking. If you're also looking to do the trail, I highly recommend it, and that's free as well. It was so much fun for the family! The workers as well were very kind.
