If I could give Lakewood a rating equivalent to all the stars in the sky, I would. My mother was laid to rest here on June 1 after she lost her battle with Covid 19. She had a hard life so I’m glad that she’ll rest in these beautiful, peaceful grounds for eternity. I love that Lakewood has events, remembrances and other services for the living to continue to honor and remember those that they’ve lost. When I purchased my mother’s plot last year, Kelly Leahy was simply amazing! She was so patient, knowledgeable and knew even more about the burial rules of my culture than I did. She made the process really easy and smooth. When I lost my mother this year and had questions about my mother’s burial because of the pandemic, Kelly was so supportive and responsive. The funeral home that was preparing my mom for burial was really sketchy and unresponsive so Kelly even provided her expertise in this area because I needed a second opinion. Words cannot express my gratitude for everything she did! I also dealt with Chris and a lovely lady whose name I forgot to ask for but suffice it to say, they were both wonderful. It gives me great peace of mind knowing that these caring and extraordinary people work here as I don’t live nearby. Lakewood is impressive in every way!

The grounds of this place are just as incredible and impressive as the interior of the the chapel. There is beauty all around and it is such a peaceful place to be. The inside of the chapel offers up some incredible artwork done in tiles. This is a huge cemetery and it gives you the feeling of being away from the hustle and bustle of the city even though you are right next to it. I've seen people just going through the grounds on their morning walks and enjoying the serenity that this place offers.

It's my favorite place to spend time and clear my head, I have awful agoraphobia and anxiety so I explore the grounds with my van and take photos. Absolutely adore it and hope to lay my own head to rest there someday.

This cemetery has a spectacular view and the ground keeping is spot on. I scout out a lot of locations for photography, and this place is one of my favorite spots in the city. Check out some of the photos I have taken there. I want to say that this cemetery is beautiful and well kept. The chapel is absolutely stunning. The issue I have is with the way the reception following the service was handled. My dear mother spent many hours planning the service for our loved one. She reached out to Lakewood staff about the area the reception would be held. She even took time out of her day to come tour. She set up a date with the staff and when she came in, there was a grieving family using the space for their reception. Not only was that uncomfortable, it was unacceptable and disrespectful to the grieving family. My mom was unable to see the space and ask questions about what would be made available. She attempted to reach out to the staff several times to get these questions answered several weeks prior. She did not get clear answers and this was reflected the day we buried our loved one. It was not clear on where the reception would be held and our guests were wandering around looking for it. When we got to the luncheon, there were supposed to be 10 tables. Not only was there not enough room for 10 tables, they were only 8. Several guests had to wait until people were done eating and got up. There were no places to set the flowers or pictures. The tech guy did not know how to work the sound system and gave up. Thankfully my husband was able to fix the sound issue for the picture DVD and I was able to dig around and find an easel to place the picture of our loved one on. Very disappointed that we had to deal with this added stress and it took away from our ability to greet and spend time with our guests.

Beautiful cemetery in Minneapolis. So much history to be found in this bucolic setting. The online map gives a historical guide that goes along with the region of the cemetery that you are driving through. This is an active cemetery and people are still honoring their loved ones by visiting this location. The cemetery is perfectly maintained.

The Chapel is so beautiful and the grounds so excellently manicured. I love that they leave the Chapel open for folks to appreciate. One of my favorite places in the city.

Beautiful spacious grounds with many large old trees. Abundant wildlife including deer, turkeys, raptors, songbirds, waterfowl, squirrels, racoons, herons and more. Lots of unique grave markers, including somber old tombstones that go back as far as the mid-1800s. The chapel is incredibly beautiful, a little known local gem. The mosaics inside were created by the last generation of old school mosaic master craftspeople, and are on par with the stunning mosaics in the chapels of Europe. The inside of the chapel is a must-see for anyone who appreciates creations of tremendous beauty

I just moved back to Uptown Mpls, and needed someplace to walk a couple of miles without plowing thru the summer mobs around Bde Maka Ska. I have extended family buried here so I figured I could justify my presence if necessary. It turned out to be a wonderful place to walk for under an hour. Saw wild turkeys, a fishing osprey on the pond, and some stones/monuments that are true artworks. Highly recommended if you need some peace. Just avoid weekends, don't act invasive, and you should be fine. 👍

A really beautiful cemetery with a gorgeous, one-of-a-kind chapel. We tend to stop by a cemetery whenever we travel because they are usually quiet, pretty, and full of history. This one was our favorite. Nothing spooky about it—just beautiful hills, lakes, and monuments.

Can I rave about a cemetery? Well …..as much time as I’ve spent in this one just exploring and walking through it I think I can ! Respectful staff 1800s through present with a peaceful lake in the far corner ……if my body ended up here I’d be ok with that …..seriously.

Nestled in the lush rolling hills near the largest lake within the city limits of Minneapolis (Lake Bde Maka Ska), Lakewood cemetery offers beauty, peace, and quiet. It’s many mature trees are stunning in the fall. The famous Lakewood Chapel is considered “the most perfect example of Byzantine mosaic art in the United States”. It’s architecture was inspired by the Hagia Sofia in Istanbul. To walk through its doors is to enter truly holy space that overcomes the soul with beauty and stillness. The acoustics are perfect. Lakewood is more than a cemetery.

Beautiful cemetary with a non-denomination chapel near Lake Mde Maka Ska. Great for walking and jogging. In the winter, we spotted Wil turkeys in large group.

The Lakewood Mausoleum is a spectacle. It's precision and attention to detail to go along with the beautiful colors, marble, and lighting makes it something special to observe. What a wonderful, calming place to pay your respects.

So beautifully maintained it seems more of a public park and the Lakewood Cemetery Chapel does not have it's like anywhere in Minneapolis (and according to the visitor's guide, anywhere outside of Italy for that matter).

It's a beautiful area, convenient to reach, plenty of parking. They know why we're here, staff is friendly and knowledgeable. It was a beautiful chapel which I'm told one of our family members helped with the dome ceiling. I thank everyone for making the best situation possible for what it is. Even the plow guys yielded to our convoy! As sad as a death is, the event was quite nice. Sidewalk salted, walk ways plowed, staff on site to answer questions. I really felt the love, care, and attention given, 10/10

One of the most beautiful cemeteries I have been to. Some famous people in history are interred here. There's a cute chapel. Looks different in the winter and fall, and hauntingly picturesque. Sometimes, you might come across a random bouquet of pheasants or peacocks.

I dont know how you can review a cemetery. No one wants to go there. But we feel at peace visiting our loved ones who have passed. The grounds are very well kept and the employees are incredibly kind during a difficult time. The directory on where to find your loved ones grave is also very helpful

Not one building had a sign, name, or number of what the buildings were. Numbers or names would be helpful on the buildings so you can tell the bereaved friends and Family! My cousins wife, who had never met anyone of the family, walked in and sat down in a chapel where people were coming in for a funeral, she told her son to go grab a remembrance card. She then realized that she and her five kids were at the wrong funeral! Could have been completely avoided with a name somewhere! The guy at the main desk did not even know where the funeral was...he knew my cousin was being interned at the mosoleum not where the funeral was! Worked in the funeral business for many years and have never seen anything like this! Sad in so many ways! Just put up some signs!

Beautiful place. Tried to go visit a loved one here and had been planning the trip to come. I drove all the here to find the building locked and to find out from someone else that the buildings close at 4:30. Very inconvenient for someone who works and goes to school. You guys should consider staying open later for those who want to go during the week but can't go till after 4:30.

Beautiful, picturesque cemetery that conjures up images of old world European cemeteries. Peaceful place to walk and reflect. A colorful gang of wild turkeys wanders around the grounds — it's a delight to find them. Many notable Minnesotans are buried here, such as Hubert H. Humphrey. Note that bicycles are not permitted on the paths.

Beautiful place, and the most peaceful walks are had there. I like to go in the early evening, walk around the outer trails (a good handful of miles), and visit my grandparents. Very well tended, a lot of interesting historic headstones.

Located in the Lakewood Cemetery in Minneapolis stands a beautiful replica of the Haglia Sophia. The replica shows the signature dome that the Hagia Sophia is famous for. The interior is wrapped in stunning art full with color. I noticed many shapes in the art on the ceiling of the dome. I also read that Hubert Humphrey was buried at this cemetery, so he must have big fan of Hagia Sophia as well. I also used there bathroom and was not a fan of the soap they provided. All in all it is a beautiful church and is fantastic work of architecture.

Massive outdoor area. Walked for 2 hrs and barely covered 1/3. That's even without going in to look at everything. Grab a map from the main building by the gate.
