This is a spectacular rock formation. It's hard to appreciate it properly from a distance, but it's also hard to get to. Multiple routes suggested by Google Maps took us through private property which had gates and no-tresspassing signs. We were able to fine un-restricted routes to the base of the mountain, but it's a long drive, with rough roads and slow going. DO NOT take a lower-clearance vehicle off the paved roads. There's no cell service near the rock itself so come prepared with a satellite communicator or risk disaster if/when your vehicle gets stuck. 100% worth the effort to go see close up. NOTE - the rock is a Navajo sacred site; viewing up close is permitted but climbing is completely prohibited. Respect the wishes of the tribe and look but don't touch.

Magnificent monolith. You can drive all the way up to it on a dirt road as long as it is not raining. You'll get the best photo from up close

Off the beaten path, but worth the discomfort of the rough dirt road to the monument. Had to pee really bad by the time we got there, but this was sacred ground and wife wouldn't let me urinate there but used a jug and waited till we left to pour it out. Worth the visit

Excellent place to visit and observe God’s natural wonders of Earth. When you stand underneath the Shiprock it feels bigger than it looks in pictures, it is absolutely immense! There are no gift shops with tour guides or gates with entrance fees to charge you for entry, just huge rocks in the desert landscape. And there are many native homes quite far away across the plain of desert brush surrounding the Shiprock and volcanic rift. A rare glimpse of the American West still simple and in harmony with nature. Be sure to bring your best 4x4 the dirt roads that access the Shiprock are barely there and there is low bush desert floor you will probably have to drive through to get to the roads around the base of the Shiprock.

Magical, mythological landscape. Try to be here at golden hour and take in the glorious view. Getting to this place is easy, paved road till the parking area. After that, there is mud road. We did help a car that was stuck in a puddle, so be careful if you want to get to the base of the monolith. The view is spectacular. It's one of my favorite New Mexico destinations.

Honestly one of my absolute favorite places - absolutely surreal, no people, free - just take your time and explore the area.

View the rock that give Shiprock, NM its' name! You can see it from over 30 miles away. We watched the annular solar eclipse from the closest main road to the rock.

So amazing. Not easy to get to but it was an adventure. You’ll definitely need something off road, but not necessarily 4x4. We were able to make it in my 2 wheel drive ford explorer. Be respectful because this is public land managed by the Navajo tribe and this place is special to them and an American national treasure. A must see if you are in the 4 corners area.
