Fifty shades of green. The park was stunning, with lush green moss covering the trees whilst the mist settled around us! As it had been raining, everything was sparkling and green! We were impressed with the well-built and maintained walking tracks that took you lakeside and to the coastline for stunning views.

Picturesque park on Kodiak Island, Alaska. Former site of WWII gun emplacements. Well kept trail circles small Lake Gertrude.

State park within easy 10 minutes from downtown, well kept walking trails around a deep, quiet stocked lake Gertrude, thru verdant forests, and along a rocky driftwood strewn shore. There is a daily use fee 5$ a day or 50$ for the season available on line. Very dog friendly with the occasional rabbit and bear sightings. If your worried about it stop at Walmart on the way and buy some bear spray.

This area is diverse in topography with steep cliffs, dense spruce forest and rocky beaches. Used in WW2 as a fortification, concrete bunkers can be seen facing the ocean. In the water below an incredible variety of creatures can be found Sea Otters, Whales and Seals just to name a few. Gertrude Lake lies in the center speckled with waterfowl and trout swimming below. During low tide you can explore the coastline and find a wide variety of ocean life. This park costs 5$ for Daypass or 50$ for yearly Alaska State Park Pass.

I had the chance to live and work in Kodiak for six months. Fort Abercrombie was on of the first places I went hiking and it quickly became one of my favorite places in the world, so far. There’s amazing tidepooling (I got to see octopuses a couple different times, as well as a couple different kinds of nudibranches, sea stars and anemones). The trails are beautiful and varied, with moss-draped trees, Lake Gertrude, ocean vistas, a wide variety of wildflowers Spring through summer, blueberries and salmon berries in the summer, an abundance of fungi in late summer. It’s a popular place but I never felt crowded there.
