This is a small visitor center with some great rangers. Enjoyed chatting with one of the rangers about the local history and she gave directions for how to tour the area with the NPS app. This was a terrific walking tour since it covers a large part of the Jackson Ward. Enjoyed learning about the entrepreneurial spirit of the African American community in the Victorian era especially Maggie Walker. But the rest of the community was just as active and supportive. Definitely recommend if you're interested in Black history. Very educational.

I visited this home about four years ago when it was completely open. This time I went with my sister and her husband. We drove down second street to the entrance to the park and had to drive around two times before finding a parking spot on the street. The first floor is open now but you need a reservation. We didn't have one and it was close to closing time. The ranger gave us a quick tour for which we are extremely grateful. Her house is furnished with period furniture that she owned of a high class. It's well worth the time to visit. She also had a private elevator installed in her as she couldn't walk.

What a great place of historical significance and right here in Richmond! There aren’t many places left in original condition with original pieces(100 years old!) and especially available to see for free! I’d recommend visiting when in town

Why aren’t we taught about people like this while in school? The site is easy to find, but you will drive right past it if you are not paying attention. Finding a parking space (on street) was a little of a chore due to the busy neighborhood, but not too bad. The Ranger was EXCELLENT! She made everything such a pleasure & a lil more interesting. Note: The Park Service still requires you to wear a mask.

Highly recommend touring trailblazer Maggie Lena Walker's house. Like her, Mrs. Walker's house and electric car was a head of the time. I was very inspired by Mrs. Walker's life, brilliance, and resilience.

I found two hour street parking, right in front of the entrance. The National Park Service Ranger guided me through the the first floor of Maggie L. Walker home and grounds. Due to Covid, the film was not shown, but can be seen on YouTube, I was told. Maggie Walker was a pioneer, she was the first African American women to own and operate a bank in the U.S. She was a civil rights activist, a teacher, businesswoman, and mother as well.

Visited in December 2022 the week between Christmas and New Years. Parking is on street only. Had to do one lap to find a spot. There is signage on where to go. Main entrance and inside court yard area. Small exhbit area with store front. There is also movie room with 20 min video which is a must before starting tour. Tour happens right after movie which they show every hour except noon from opening to closing. There is a junior ranger program here specific for Maggie Walker National Historic site along with special cancellation stamp if you collect those. They do have their own collectable token as well. The movie was very interesting and we all learned alot. Then the tour of the house was best. Ranger who gave the tour (also DnD enthuist) was amazing and enteracted with our kids (13, 10 and 7). She explained the history of the house and the additions and the items inside which were original and belonged to Maggie Walker. Definitely worth a visit if you're in town. We spent maybe 90 mins and alot of it was interacting with the rangers and completing the junior ranger program. I would guess most people wouldn't spend more than an hour here total. Worse part was probably trying to find parking. There was one other family that toured with us and also at the time of our visit the mask mandate was reinstated so all NPS in Richmond required masks.

Wow-I knew nothing about the history of Maggie L. Walker. Such an inspiration and empowering. We need to know about Black History and the women who changed history and paved the way for others. The tour guide, Gabriele, was knowledgeable and friendly! I recommend this 1.5 hour tour to everyone.

Well preserved home of one of the Richmond social and cultural giants. The rangers are informed about Maggie Walker's life and times, making the tour a valuable experience. The visitors center has a film about her and a gift shop.

This is a National Historical Site showcasing Maggie L Walker's contribution to African-Americans There is a small visitor center with just a bit of displays. Access to the actual house is available only with the ranger tour. It' in the middle of Richmond, VA. If you are nearby, it's a good visit to spend an hour or so to learn about Maggie Walker.

Our tour guide was very helpful, and answered all our questions. The staff at the visitors center (I believe his name is Mike) were all extremely friendly and knowledgeable. Highly recommend!

What a wonderful experience we had here. All the Rangers on duty were so friendly and helpful. The video shown before the tour was excellent. We had been on many tours, but this tour, hands down, was the best we have had in a long time! Thank you so much for making this National Park one of our favorite places!

I'm amazed I've never heard of Maggie Walker before but learning about her incredible life had me stunned. Fantastic lady who had a fantastic house. The staff are fantastic as well. Super knowledgeable and friendly. The tours are every hour except noon and take roughly an hour to see everything. I happened to be the only person on my tour so the poor guide had to put up with all my questions. Definitely recommend going if you're interested in the history of Richmond. Also it's free admission.

What a neat historical spot. Easy to walk to from downtown, cute little visitor center - made complete by a great ranger-led tour of a historical mansion!

Wife and I both enjoyed the tour of the house and learning all about the contributions Mrs. Walker made to the world. These are the kinds of people history should speak on. She was a women and leader that was years ahead of her time.

Excellent experience. Free to the public Off street parking does make it a bit difficult but free parking is an option. When you arrive you may have to wait depending on what time the next group tour starts. Lucky for me I had about a 15 minute wait so not too bad. You will get the option to watch a video which I highly recommend. It gives you a more in depth idea as to who Maggie Walker was and what she did to make a difference. The ranger (guide) was very friendly and knowledgeable She was very open to explaining and answering questions along the way. If you have children this is an excellent place to come They have an interactive approach to getting the children to really embrace learning of the history and participating in the tour. My child was given a booklet with different tasks that needed to be completed in order to receive a ranger badge . My child is fairly small and this was enough to keep interest and allow me to focus on the tour .
