It’s one of Chapel Hill’s highlights. Please don’t go there and expect something extraordinary, but include it in your tour of the oldest public university in the United States. Depending on when you're coming, beware of lines of students taking graduation pictures. On a side note, UNC was highly inspired of adding a ramp for wheelchairs, but - gosh - it's so ugly. I am sure a nicer design could be found.

Was just passing by and asked some “locals” what we should do. They said we HAD to check out the fountain. First impressions were mediocre at best. I’d give it a 6/10 for historical landmarks and 3/10 for water fountains I’ve seen. 0/10 for functionality. 1/10 for cleanliness. Cool school tho. Great hibachi across the street. At least their water fountain works.

A popular “selfie” place, currently under construction for updates to the wooden structures. The fountain used to be UNC’s only source of water. Tradition states if you drink from the fountain your first day of class, you will have good luck, or all A’s! Also a picturesque place to take graduation pictures. It’s just a lovely, romantic area. Stayed at the Old East dorms and the old well was nearby. It is a great place to take a good memory picture of UNC.

All i can say is this well has NEVER gotten me a 4.0. Its cute but not much to the eye I think we should make it a dr pepper fountain. Regardless, its a chapel hill staple

So cool to visit this time honored space. Had thought it was still an “old well”, but that’s my nostalgia taking over!! Go Heels!! 😍

An iconic spot on UNC Chappell Hill campus. The fount is no longer working. Very beautiful and a lovely green space/quad is right behind. Has a couple of memorials. And lovely brick walkways throughout.

Obviously those people in wheelchairs took the university to court, and the university was forced to build iron railings and rising iron plates behind the old well, which made the scenery worse. Maybe someone took advantage of the recent riots to make a big fuss.

Legend has it that the UNC student must drink from the well before the first day of class at the beginning of first semester to fare well! Either ways it’s a beautiful setting to hangout with family and friends.

The Old Well certainly still works and looks well maintained considering it's history. There had been great lengths taken to make it accessible. There is a ramp that leads to the drinking side. The atmosphere was as you would expect from a university. Lots of busy students heading towards their next destination. It's a great feeling to be there for even a moment.

I drank the water on the first day of class, as the legend goes, and yet I did *not* make all A's that year. 5 stars for teaching me my first lesson of college!

Even not a Chapel Hill student, I was very happy to got a taste of that water! Certainly has a lot of minerals in that. A very beautiful campus, and people were nice.
