😐 Very long wait! If you are coming to handle property taxes, they open at 8am but you should arrive by 7:15/7:30am to get in line. You have to wait in the line and get out in queue. I arrived at 8:25am and was in line outside for just over an hour and a half. I ended up being #39 once I made it insid... People often mention people, line, time, wait, hour, courthouse, property, system, open, visit,

In Jackson County Missouri one has to pay personal property taxes. Some tasks have to be done in person. Tax waivers. Taking off or adding vehicles. Here is what I found out. Expect at least an hour to two hour wait to be seen. You have to go through a metal detector to enter. You must wear a mask. You give your name and phone number in order to receive text updates. They are very good at updating. The staff are overworked but they are proffesional. The building is small. Hallways are narrow. The building was recently restored to its original condition. A museum and library is on site but can only be seen by appointment. Parking is challenging. One way streets surround the building. At the time of this post the timed parking spots are not being enforced. Only one entrance in. Its on the South side of the building. It is wheel chair accessible. A lot of new business popping up around the courthouse. And last the Jackson County Sheriff working at this location is a proffesional and went above and beyond to help everyone that walked in from what I observed.

I arrived at 8:25am and was in line outside for just over an hour and a half. I ended up being #39 once I made it inside. I then waited for 3 hours for it to be my turn. You can set up to have text notifications when your number is coming up so you can at least sit in your car and wait. Once it was my turn, it took about 20-25 minutes to do what I needed and get done. The bathrooms were also out of order and they had porta potties outside instead.

I went here to visit the starting point of the Oregon Trail. There are some nice markers around here for those interested in history!

We we're waiting to get in the queue for more than an hour. Got a number and there's 150 people before me. The guy in charge said they dont open the online queue cus they run out too fast and they can't take any people that walk in. HOW ABOUT LEETING HALF THE APPOINTMENTS BE ONLINE AND THE REST IN PERSON???

Plan to wait all day to be served. My daughter and I both arrived at 9 a.m. and waited in line for nearly 2 hours, only to be told once we reached the front that we would be put in a queue. There were 52 people ahead of us, and we received a text telling us what our place in line was. We were told to head back to the courthouse when we had 8 people ahead of us. Well ... at 4:40 p.m. and 13 people ahead of us, we arrived back to the courthouse. However, we were told we'd been taken out of the queue and would have to come back another day and start all over. Absolutely terrible. If this is how things are done, online options need to be made available. We wasted an entire day off work and got none of our very important personal property business accomplished.

Well DAMN this is ridiculous, this process is a horrible one to go into thinking you will be in and out in under 2 to 5 hours . The wait is unbelievable. The ladies in the office were nice like others have said and I only herd one person/ customer flip out while I have been here for over an hour and 45 minutes . The Line is wrapped around the halls and moving like slough speed. I told my boss id be in today and i think I lied cause DAMN I am still here.

Gail McCann Beatty is the director of assessor. She needs to be criticized for letting people wait 5 hours just to add and or delete property from the county. How is this acceptable? We have people with kids here, elderly with who the county lost their paperwork, handicap people waiting with no help. Your system does not work. How do you sleep at night knowing people need this and there’s no way around it? The lady at the front is super friendly though

If you plan to see the assessor they tell you to arrive between 8-10am to get your “spot” but I would recommend being out there at 6-7am in the morning maybe 5-530am if you don’t want to be there ALL day long. I went today at 9am, stood in line until 10am before I made it to the lady at the front of the line asking everyone what they were there for. I thought once getting to her I was in & ready to go. I had no idea at that point I would be given a # & had 52 in front of me. I didn’t sit down with the assessor until exactly 415pm. I missed an entire day of work. Towards the end of the day I was able to secure a seat inside to sit. No privacy for anyone coming in to handle their business. It can all be heard out in the open by the man or woman at the desk. I sat & heard many people complain that they are tax payers & can’t even get in to handle their business unless they come early & even then people were turned away after so many people checked in. It’s unbelievable how they are running it. Terrible actually.

Ugh. I got there at 7 am to add a vehicle, and I was 6th in line. By the time they opened at 8, there were 50 plus waiting. They are listed on the qless app, but you cant use it. It always says closed. The receptionist likes to interrupt and talk over you to ask exactly what I was trying to say when she interrupted. Once I got through the line it took about 45 minutes. If i had known about the vehicle inspections and complicated taxes, I would never have moved to Missouri.

This entire operation is a joke. ALL property tax encounters are only done at this location. First come, first serve. I arrived at 10:30am & they were booked for the day. It saddens me how folks lives isn't taken into consideration at all. I called before I went & was told they were open til 5pm. Grandview city hall only take payments. If any changes need to be made to your account they are unable to assist you. This entire process is awful.

Kara helped me register my car easily and quickly! I waited in line for over a hour before the building opened but it was all worth it because of Kara’s great attitude and assistance! I’m now a legal driver!!!!

If you get here at 7:45AM, before they open, plan on spending 4 hours waiting in line. There are online options for some tax issues, but we were told today there is a 3 week response time. Good luck!

The line and system are terrible. it took 4 tries to even get in line. It’s 2024 and this system is stuck in the stone ages. ridiculous.

  • 1/5 Justin P. 9 months ago on Google
The useless, hard of hearing prick that checks you in got my number wrong, forcing me to sit in line for an hour for no reason, then he turned around and blamed me for it. If you’re getting a PP tax receipt, you’re better off getting it on the website.

Beautiful courthouse and centrally located in the town. Several landmarks adorne the square the courthouse is located. I recommend taking a stroll and visiting each one. Comically, the courthouse reminds me of Back to the Future.

Historic building on the Independence square. Still has all of the old aesthetics flooring, doors, crown molding. Currently being used as the assessment department the personal property tax department. Metal detectors upon entering super helpful staff with easy to navigate directions.

Hi this is Pastor Nancy, the folks at the recorder's office are quick and efficient. When coming to get your marriage license just go to their link jacksongov.org ahead of time to fill out your marriage license and you will get in and out in about 10 minutes!

It's cool that it's still very well used by the government despite it's age. The lines can get long if you go during peak times (and staff less forgiving), so don't do that.

Our visit was required as a family member was moving into Jackson County, and we needed register for personal Property taxes. Upon arrival we walked into a crowded hallway where ~35 customers were awaiting their "time". We were greeted by a less than thrilled receptionist asking our name and what we were there to achieve. The conversation was difficult as we were in a noisy hall, the receptionist was talking quietly through a mask and was not clear on setting expectations, other than "have a seat". The first of two positives of this experience was the text alerts that you receive indicating your status/position in line. You can check your status at any time by sending "s" with a return message that indicates how many people are in front of you. Unfortunately, when I did this the first time, I learned there were 39 people ahead of us. Huh?!?! I did the quick math and figured this could take several hours. Wow! (and it did) I feel terrible for people that try to get this task completed on a workday, over lunch or people with transportation or mobility issues. No warnings, no indications of estimated waiting time...nothing. I was also disappointed in that I called the County twice prior to my visit, in order to make sure I was clear on exactly what I needed to bring, and while the employees were both pleasant and helpful, on neither call did the employee indicate or warn me that there may be long waiting times. Our visit was around the 6th or 7th of the month, so we were not there during typical high traffic times (end/beginning of month). Fortunately, we had the day off, it was around lunchtime and frankly, Independence Square has a lot of restaurants and cool, quirky shops that can fill your time. This was the second positive experience, but I think the credit goes to the City of Independence and its business owners. BTW, the text alert system also allows a little freedom as you are able to check your status and get back to the courthouse when your turn is next (or within 3 or 4). *WARNING* Arrive knowing that you might likely have to wait a long time for your turn. Plan ahead and know that you will have some time to burn. We were told by one of the shop owners that some days people are turned away as the schedule is already full! Arrive early for better luck. Enjoy Independence Square for lunch and a leisurely walk!

It was a very nice courthouse with a great statue of Truman on one side and on the other I think it was Andrew Jackson who Truman liked. It's really the Jackson County Truman Courthouse. Truman was a judge at the courthouse before becoming President. The town square is quite lovely but I was there during covid so not much was open. I spoke to some locals and they remember how President Truman, once out of office, would just stroll about town and talk to anyone. He truly was the "people's President". Everything in Independence, MO seems to be named after Truman. Independence is known as the Queen City of the Trails; the big wagon trains departed from here (California, Oregon, and Santa Fe Trails). You see a monument to the Mormons on the backside of the courthouse next to Jackson. Truman's presidential library is here but I didn't have time to visit it. Truman and his wife Bess are also buried here. Because the Mormons were forced to leave Independence and thus head west, the city is sacred to the Latter Day Saints. It is the home of Joseph Smith's 1831 Temple Lot, and several Mormon factions have their headquarters here.

Crowded, wait time was ridiculous. If you're looking to fix your property tax (I was paying on a car I didn't own and never paid on the one I've had for 3years.) Always renewed Always paid property tax. then all of a sudden I was being denied them due to this error. Just contact the collection dept (they're amazing) via email and they will get you straight. They fixed my issue in less than 48hrs and I was able to go the DMV and get new stickers!

It was an ok visit. I had to come down here to get a waiver for my title. It was very busy though wish they didn't shut the one down in lees summit. It was about a 3 hour and 40 minute wait. But it was only about an hour and half. It only took about 15 minutes to get the waiver. If you're going to the independence one, make sure you call ahead and ask for the number to text and put your name on the wait list. There's also one in Kansas city that usually has a shorter wait time. Other than that I didn't have any problems.

The receptionist was a rockstar! I watched and listened while I waited and she was so professional and helpful to everyone. That girl knows her stuff! The app was wonderful and the gentlemen that helped me at station 3 was kind, courteous and very good at his job. I was very impressed with how they all took care of people. Thank you!

I went down to the courthouse to the assessment department to get a few cars removed from my personal property tax and pay my bill. The officer on duty at the receptionist desk was very courteous and helpful! I must have got there at the perfect time cuz I was in and out and a flash. Even though they are updating their new computer system there were only two people in front of me and total time that I waited was 20 minutes! The people at the assessment department and the cashier were so kind and courteous I could hardly believe it! I would think they would be at wits end considering the increase in taxes this year! I was truly impressed with their professionalism and kindness!

It's not a tourist attraction anymore. But the best advice I can give, check in via text the minute you get there. You will happy you did. Follow the instructions on the poster at entrance and you will be in and out in no time.

Karen, the receptionist (with the short little haircut) is incredibly rude. Lighten up a tad and maybe smile a bit. The customers you’re “helping” just need some guidance, we don’t need to be ridiculed at 8:05 in the morning.

I was able to handle what I needed very fast. I only had to fill out a paper for each document. Once I was done they put the information on the system, I paid and I walked out with my originals. The lady was very professional, helpful and friendly.

This is a likable place to visit. It lets me know more of the past of Lee's Summit than I ever knew about. Cost of entry, don't remember if there is any or not. Come to think of it, there is a cost, bought it's been a while since I've been there to remember the cost. They have to some amount to help maintain it, I suppose? But it's a good place to visit for the history of the city.

The text-to-check- in system is no longer operational. It’s still on their website but once you get here, it is first-come first-serve. For assessments or anything related to property taxes, you will need to come line up and get checked in early. My first attempt, I arrived at 10am and was informed that Assessments was booked for the day. Today, I arrived an hour before they opened the doors (doors open at 8am) and waited outside with 40 people in the line ahead of me. Come ready for the elements while you wait outside, bring a snack/water. The staff are professional and courteous but this waiting system and being unable to reserve an appointment is hugely problematic. 2-5 hour wait times are inequitable for folks with unforgiving bosses/strict work schedules, disabilities, or those without childcare.

I arrived at 6am and was 7th in line. As soon as the office opened at 8am I was first served. The staff was friendly (maybe because I was their first customer of the day?). I was out by 8:10am. But I took count of how long the line was: 6:30: 15 people 6:45: 25 people 7:15: 40+ people 8:00: 100+ people If you don’t mind waiting outside, this can be a 2 hour trip from 6-8am. Good luck.

This system is a joke. And the county knows it and doesn’t care. Missouri’s government state and local runs like it’s from 1930’s. I absolutely hate this backwoods, ignorant state. How do you keep coming to this place and the line is closed at noon. Day before no internet building closed. People work you know. And this is the only location you have?!!!!
