If
you
look
the
least
bit
alternative
don't
shop
here
unless
you
want
to
get
embarrassed.
I've
shopped
here
frequently,
but
always
after
work
when
I
was
dressed
conservatively.
Today,
Saturday,
I
went
in
wearing
purple
paisley,
tie
dye
and
denim.
After
buying
$200
worth
of
groceries
and
a
book,
the
girl
at
the
door
who
checks
your
receipt
said,
"You
didn't
pay
for
the
book."
I
protested
that
I
had
paid
for
everything
in
the
cart.
She
waved
the
long
receipt
in
front
of
me.
"It's
not
on
the
receipt,
did
you
leave
it
in
the
cart
or
something
when
you
checked
out?"
I
explained
I
put
it
on
top
of
the
boxed
salad
mix
so
it
wouldn't
get
damaged
when
I
set
it
on
the
conveyor
belt
to
check
out.
She
looked
at
the
receipt
again
and
said
she'd
have
to
call
a
manager.
Meanwhile
a
long
line
was
forming
behind
me
and
she
kept
me
there
till
the
manager
arrived.
She
told
him
I
hadn't
paid
for
the
book.
I
protested
that
I
had
not
done
anything
wrong
and
could
pay
for
the
book.
He
took
me
aside
and
said
he'd
ring
me
up
in
customer
service.
As
I
was
about
to
pay
for
the
book
(a
second
time)
he
looked
at
the
receipt
and
said,
"Oh
it
is
here,
you
did
pay
for
it."
And
handed
me
the
book
and
the
receipt.
Even
if
the
girl
at
the
door
had
thought
the
book
wasn't
paid
for,
why
suddenly
assume
I
had
taken
the
book
and
not
that
the
checker
had
missed
it?
Why
the
big
drama
of
pulling
me
out
of
the
line
and
walking
me
to
customer
service?
If
you
read
this
far
in
the
review
I'll
be
a
little
clearer
on
how
I
was
dressed.
I
definitely
looked
queer.
I
can
only
imagine
I
was
profiled
and
either
they
assumed
gays
are
thieves
or
they
just
wanted
to
hassle
me
because
they
didn't
want
someone
who
was
openly
gay
to
be
shopping
in
their
conservative
little
store.
