"I
am
a
Marine
Veteran
and
I
visited
the
USO
yesterday
with
a
non-military
buddy
of
mine
to
grab
a
quick
snack
after
our
very
long
flight.
I
have
been
to
the
USO
many
times
before
with
my
parents,
who
are
not
Military,
although
yesterday
I
was
told
by
the
lady
at
the
front
desk
that
he
was
not
allowed
in.
She
was
very
very
rude,
so
much
so
that
I
myself
did
not
want
to
be
there.
It
was
not
very
welcoming,
so
I
walked
right
out.
What
a
way
to
treat
a
veteran.
I
will
NEVER
go
to
this
USO
again."
Dear
Raphael,
if
the
VOLUNTEER
staff
member
was
rude
to
you,
I
expect
it
was
because
you
rudely
demanded
access
to
which
neither
you
or
your
friend
were
entitled.
What
part
of
the
USO
charter
did
you
not
read?
"Are
United
States
Veterans
allowed
access
to
the
lounge?
The
USO
is
a
congressionally
chartered
nonprofit
organization;
we
are
not
a
part
of
the
federal
government.
Our
admissions
policy
is
driven
by
our
congressional
mandate
to
support
the
American
Armed
Forces
-
SPECIFICALLY,
U.S.
ACTIVE,
RESERVE,
AND
GUARD
SERVICE
MEMBERS
AND
THEIR
FAMILIES.
While
we
respect
all
of
those
who
have
served
our
nation,
we
are
a
military
service
organization,
not
a
veterans
service
organization."
If
you're
not
a
military
ID
card-carrying
military
retiree,
and
you've
been
granted
access
solely
because
of
your
status
as
a
veteran,
count
yourself
lucky
and
be
grateful
because
the
VOLUNTEER
staff
were
doing
you
a
favor.
Period.
Full
stop.
You
had
your
turn
as
an
active
duty
Marine.
It's
now
the
turn
for
other
AD
Service
Members.
If
you
want
guaranteed
access,
you
can
always
return
to
active
duty
or
join
the
reserves.
And
even
then,
friends
are
not
authorized
entry.
Family
members
only,
and
then
only
when
accompanied
by
the
Service
Member,
unless
the
family
member
has
an
AD
military
dependent
ID
card
entitling
him
or
her
entry
with
or
without
the
sponsor.
Otherwise,
demand
that
Congress
fund
the
USO
to
provide
services
to
non-retiree
veterans.
Good
luck
with
that.
So,
the
long
and
short
of
it
is,
you've
been
getting
a
free
ride
that
you're
not
entitled
to,
relying
on
funding
provided
for
service
to
AD
Service
Members
only.
The
USO
isn't
funded
for
non-retiree
veterans,
so
you've
been
taking
advantage
of
the
good
will
of
the
VOLUNTEER
staff.
I'll
bet
you
never
ponied
up
a
donation
to
put
into
the
donation
jar.
Even
retirees
are
granted
access
only
on
a
space-available
basis
at
the
discretion
of
the
staff.
BTW,
I'm
an
Army
Retiree
and
USO
volunteer
myself
and
you
would
have
been
turned
away
at
my
location
too,
Lose
the
attitude,
pal.
This
applies
to
all
non-retiree
veterans,
regardless
of
disability
status,
who
complain
that
they
were
denied
entry
to
this
or
any
other
USO.
You're
denied
entry
because
you're
not
entitled
entry.
Imagine
how
full
the
USO
lounges
would
be
if
all
veterans
were
allowed
entry.
It's
untenable.
We
serve
a
clearly-defined
component
of
the
military
community
and
if
you're
not
a
member
of
that
component,
don't
complain
to
us
or
about
us.
As
volunteers,
we
do
the
best
we
can
within
the
limits
of
our
charter
and
the
resources
provided
to
us.
