This hospital used to be considered top-notch in the region - what happened? My mom was transferred here from Low Moor after having stomach pains. Absolutely awful experience - lack of communication and most nurses only tend to you when they feel like it. This place has gone way downhill...

The Doctors lack communication and none of them know what the other is doing. I had to watch everything they did because they almost let my husbands sugar bottom out several times. They left us waiting for almost 3 hours to be discharged and then told us he would have to stay another night because the doctor didn’t put the prescription in. Definitely not the care we experienced in previous years or that you would expect. If I had to advocate this hard for my loved one that is competent I feel awful for those who are not and whose families are not or cannot be at the hospital with them.

I use to think LG was the best! Until I went and nobody even listened. I asked for an IV I was given a medical definition. It's not called an IV it's Fluid. Every knows that they said. What a joke. They would even let me talk to the charge nurse. PA'S are not real doctors you guys suck

My daughter started experiencing abdominal pain last night at 9pm. I assessed her and believed she was having an accute Appendicitis. Took her to Lewis Gale ED Department in Salem Va.She was accessed promptly and we were placed in an ED room for assessment and diagnostics. Labs were performed promptly and then a CT scan. The Paramedic that performed her blood draw was compassionate and professional( Sonia Aguirre). The Physicians Assistant(Christopher Lawyer, PA) was very efficient in helping with her diagnosis and facilitated the communication with her Surgeon quickly. We did spend some 3 hours in the ED after that waiting on a room for admission but the transfer to the surgical floor was pleasant and uneventful. Surgery was scheduled for 7 am in the morning but I accompanied my Daughter to the OR prep room early at 6 am. The nurse, Anesthesiologist and especially the Nurse Anesthetist were so kind and caring as my daughter was very scared and anxious.i was put at ease as soon as I met her Surgeon Dr. Eric Steen and I felt confident my daughter was in good hands. Her surgery took 40 minutes and her recovery was without incident. She was discharged from the hospital at noon today and it was a great experience. Thank you to all that made our experience a good one. Dr Stephen Alouf. Salem, Virginia.

Update: Got a gastroenterologist and guess what? The hernia that "Dr" Quinn said was gone is not gone. Yeah it's still there and needs to be pinned in place. So not only do you have a Dr working there that retaliates against patients that smoke marijuana but he's also so blinded by his beliefs that you should not smoke it that he missed a medical issue. That's far from safe, he's gonna end up getting someone killed. Still dealing with pain and issues, my primary wants me to go here but I outright refuse and she understands because every single patient she has sent her has not been taken care of or had had a lot of issues. She was also blown away at Dr quinns way of retaliation. She said he should have been put on unpaid leave while it was investigated. It sickens me this hospital is allowed to stay open with all the issues. When patients would rather deal with 10/10 pain at home vs going to a hospital for help you know there is a issue. Also was being treated in the ER for over 10 hours, next to others with zero privacy. No one was comfortable with it. If you cannot withstand the influx of patients then hire more people because your gonna end up killing someone. One of the worst experiences I've had. A hospital is supposed to be a safe place, not a place where you feel unsafe. Let me start off by saying "Dr" quin shouldn't be a doctor at all. If you can not accept that pot is legal that's your own issue, the fact that he projects that on his patients is not right. He made me feel like a drug addict because I smoke pot x2 times weekly, if that, so I can eat a good meal. He was very rude so I kicked him out of my room and fired him as my doctor. He then proceeded to smile at my mother in law and wave in a very mean way. This was retaliation for kicking him out of my room. A few hours later security showed up because a faint smell of pot....my mother in law who has a medical card had a pot pen in her purse she was NOT smoking, anyone knows if someone smokes it's a very strong smell. They kicked her out of my room as well as my wife who showed up a little while later. So because this "doctor" didn't agree that I smoked he made a big scene to make himself feel better. What happened to doctors taking care of there patients? I would be absolutely ashamed if I was the one employeing this doctor. He's going to get someone killed because he can't seem to get out of his own train of thought. That's dangerous for a doctor. He was dead set on all my issues being pot related when it started wayyyy before I started smoking but he wouldn't listen to me. I signed myself out because I did not feel safe anymore in this hospital with that doctor walking around causing issues. When your nurse is on your side of the whole thing there is a issue. I see now why all the 1 star reviews. How am I suppose to feel like I'm getting the care I need or feel safe with that doctor walking around causing issues? I'm still having issues with pain and nausea but I would rather feel safe at home in pain then at this hospital with unsafe doctors. Patient care is suppose to come first and that is NOT what is happening here. A few weeks later and I'm still in pain but dealing with it myself because after the Quin run in I would rather suffer then deal with a doctor like him again. The fact this "Doctor" has me so scared shows the damage he's done. The fact he is still employed is pathetic, If I was management I would terminate him because he's not helping patients at this point and I know I am not the first patient he's talked to like this. Talk to your nurses if you actually want to fix this, they see a lot and kept telling me they are on my side vs the doctors side. That right there tells you there is a big issue in this hospital. In the process of getting a lawyer.

2 appointments made back to back. First appointment for a mammogram went perfectly. I was taken back within 10 minutes of arrival and finished quickly. Second appointment was with radiology. Checked in and seated in the waiting area quickly. Within 5 minutes I was told ultrasound was running behind by about 30 minutes. While I wasn't happy about the delay I understand and agreed to wait. After waiting 50 minutes I go ask what the delay is and agree to wait 10 more minutes. After that 10 minutes i go back and tell them I am leaving. Was sent back to registration to be sure they are aware that I DID NOT receive the test I was sent for and to be sure my $400 copay was returned to me. At this point someone comes and says they will have you in for the test if you can just wait 10 more minutes?! Seriously, these folks need to understand that my time is just as valuable as theirs is. Do better Lewis Gale!

The patient access manager lady - her name is Alisha . She called me for the register position’s interview on Wednesday,July 24 at 9am . She told me to come over the phone at that day and time. I went there as per the stated date and time. When I got to the Lewis gale hospital for the interview- she ghosted me like she said no, I didn’t call you for the interview. I was really upset when I heard on what she did. I feel like such behavior needs to be addressed and she shouldn’t have a job at Lewis gale hospital in Salem , VA. Of course, it’s why Lewis also losing representation. Just be careful job seeker , sometimes they hosted people for the job.

Worst experience ever trying to pay a bill. Have a procedure on Wednesday. They sent me an email Friday after midnight. Email said, you have 72 hours to use attached link to pay your bill in full and receive a $300 discount. Had a house full of people over the weekend. Opened the email on Monday morning. Link had expired. Called the 888 number and after waiting a half an hour on hold a machine told me they were having technical difficulty and dropped the call. Called local number and was transferred to finance department. They didn’t answer phone and their voicemail was full. Drove down in person to pay bill.

From the moment I was admitted everyone was friendly and professional. Dr. Thomas was amazing! My night nurse Ann was attentive, kind and funny! She made my stay very comfortable. I'm giving LewisGale a 5 star rating! You guys were great!! 😊

My wife was brought in about 7am and she was attended to by the ER staff and nurses. Everyone and everything has been top notch. She's been in three other hospitals since first of the year and not one can come anywhere close. I'm glad to give you 5 stars and she's still in the cardiovascular ICU. But it's nice to have a facility this nice and concerned and compassionate for the patients and family. It's been a week and you are no closer than you were a week ago in finding a solution. So I'm recanting my original review back to 2 stars. You're no better than any of the hospitals in the area

From the friendly one on one attention to the warm blankets, this team made me feel safe in their care. It was obvious everyone enjoyed their jobs and this gave me peace of mind going into this procedure. Their care continued after going home with emails and a phone call to see how I was feeling the next day. I wish to say thank you to all the Lewis Gale staff and doctors for taking care of me.

Wow wish I could give negative 5 stars. My poor dad got transferred here for osteomyelitis..he had a pressure wound that got very infected and on top of it he suffered from ms for years and no one here seemed to understand his legs hurt him so badly and to be gentle. His mother and wife stayed every day and night with him except one that I convinced them to go with me (his daugther) to rest at the hotel and when we got back in the morning he had thrown up and laid there for who knows how long it was dried to his gown and he was so out of it he wasn't even able to call anyone. Biggest regret of my life was trusting them to care for him while we went to rest. He also had to have a bone biopsy that was really painful for him and they ended up losing it and tried to set up a second one that luckily they decided against. Now he did have some wonderful nurses that took great care of him but most doctors were just insensitive and didn't care to really explain anything to him and one nurse who when I noticed his inability to use his arm tried to make me seem crazy. Also the doctor on call that night never did come to check out his symptoms. He declined so rapidly and I'm not blaming any doctors for this but his care was just not there and I wonder if anyone really knew how to treat him properly. I had to work and I wish I could have been there day in and out because a lot of things done wouldn't have happened if I hadn't pressed harder. In the end my poor dad coded twice and had to be put on a ventilator (also against our wishes) but we took him off and let him be free of his pain and this place.

My brother was transferred here when suffering a stroke. We were told he had a bed but when we arrived, he was stuck in a hallway with no care and no privacy for hours. The nurses were less than helpful and lacked any compassion. He asked for an update and a greasy stringy-haired male nurse said to him, "I have real life or death patients" and walked away from him rather than just communicating. We witnessed another nurse go into the room of an elderly COVID patient after she pushed her call button only to tell her, "Stop that. There are real sick patients here" and then proceed to stand and gawk at a trauma patient rather than assist his own patient. I have never seen such a lack of care in any Healthcare facility and was floored when we were refused information to contact a Patient advocate. We have lodged a complaint with the BBB and plan to do whatever is possible to ensure that other patients don't have to suffer the same neglect that he has. Due to the ineptitude and lack of care, he has lost all movement in one side of his body which could have been prevented with quick care rather than abandoning him in a hallway and neglecting his care. PLEASE DO NOT SEND YOUR LOVED ONES HERE IF YOU CARE FOR THEM.

My coworker went to Lewis Gale emergency and presented with shortness of breath, chest tightness, chest pain and arm numbness at 14:30. After a cursory EKG and a chest xray - no blood was drawn- he continued to sit in the hallway until17:00 with no further interaction. He told more than one person that he was having difficulty breathing and was in pain to no avail. His wife was told on the phone that he was transferred and would not give her any details. HE WAS STILL SITTING IN THE HALLWAY AND HAD NOT BEEN SEEN BY A PHYSICIAN. He left and went to another ER Good thing he didn't fall out in the hallway.

The individuals at the table inside the main entrance, as well as those at the reception desk, need to be educated on dealing with the public in a polite and at least somewhat pleasant manner. My three times interfacing with them found them to be rude at best. The two nurse/technicians who administered my procedures were outstanding. My greatest disappointment is that my procedures were completed twelve (12) days ago and I have had NO follow up either from the physician who was to read the results or the physician who ordered them. This is inexcusable.

**** EDIT - You cannot reply to the Owner's response, so here goes: ****We HAVE reached out and the answer is "Too bad". You should NEVER saddle people with bills they aren't prepared for. You should have made sure my husband knew what the cost was for the entire thing instead of leading him to believe the paid off doctor's bill was the only cost. Your callousness has led to a dire situation. Shame on every one of you.**** These thieving SOBS have presented me a bill for $7000 more than what I was quoted. From Andrew J. Maiolo's office to the billing office I've been scammed and robbed. Make sure you get EVERY THING in writing because they are liars.

Don’t waste your time going to the ER. No compassion or care for patients. Saw a PA which was inexperienced and not helpful or caring at all. Was in car accident and was given insufficient pain management and treated like I was lying about being in pain. Left in pain and tears and nothing done. What is the point of going to the ER if you are not treated properly. This was the second time at an ER in last two days. Both times proper care was not given. The patient’s rights mean nothing apparently! This the first time going to the ER in almost a year. I try not to go unless I have to go. I will no go back to this ER.

Went to the ER last night with stomach pain like I’ve never had before. Sat there 4 hours in pain for them to finally bring me essentially pepto and discharge me 30 minutes later without even asking if I felt better. Never even saw a doctor, only the practitioner who didn’t even let me speak five minutes before determining it was “reflux” and ordering meds. No examination. Had to state all my business in front of other patients, didn’t even take me to a private room to talk. I get it’s the ER it’s for emergencies, severe sudden stomach pain and vomiting that persisted dir hours felt like an emergency to me. It’s now been about 16 hours since onset of my symptoms and I’m still feeling horrible. Will never go back here. Absolutely appalled with my treatment.

I had non invasive radiology studies done. All of the staff that I dealt with were very professional, personable and helpful. I watched the gentleman in registration go out of his way to help walk ins and elderly people and the technician that I had, Danni, was fantastic. She even went the extra mile to make sure that I had every test that I needed done that day. And, got me a blanket when I needed one.

The doctors, nursing staff, technicians to housekeeping were professional, caring and extremely friendly concerning my care. Although I stayed on a floor that was being renovated, the hallways and rooms were extremely clean and quiet. My only complaint being a doctor hospitalist who tried twice to discharge me indicating I could return the following day for a procedure. It appeared he had no idea what the other team members had scheduled.

The wait and everything else was great. The hospital was also very clean. Every person I had from start to finish was a absolute gem. The cat scan tech and I even had a conversation like we knew each other for ages. I will always come here if I need care. Sweet and hardworking people. Thank you

I was in the hospital for 2 months. When I was on the floor the I was assigned to the nurse for the most part took care of me.When I was move to the 6th floor some of the nurses I only seen when it was time for meditation. They left me down there and checked in now and then Then THEN I WAS TOLD THAT I WOULD NEED PHYSICAL THERAPY sat in the room for a week and received physical therapy 2 . Then was taken to a rehab center after a week. I don't understand why I couldn't have therapy there a week of my life I feel was waisted. Come on people we can do a lot better then this

My overall experience with this medical center has been good. For radiology, therapy, various out patient procedures and the clinic - this medical center has always been wonderful. Yesterday was the first time I've visited this ER in over twenty years. My husband experienced a medical emergency that couldn't be treated by urgent care. Sadly, like many other businesses they are noticably short staffed. However, the staff present went above and beyond to provide excellent care. Thank you! I'm happy that we chose LewisGale as our hospital of choice.

My sister was at LewisGale twice in the last 2 months. The 1st time she was released with a large wound and they sent her home with no wound care. She was back within a week with sepsis, UTI and delirium. They wanted to release her with 48 hours. Still with the delirium and not idea if the UTI or Sepsis was resolved. I fought to keep her until Monday and she ended up staying a week longer. She was released to a horrific rehab Salem Heath. They did not take care of the wound and was sent back to LG with delirium, UTI, sepsis, seizures and extremely low magnesium, calcium and potassium. She broke her foot and no one could tell us how she did it. She had a 24 hour sitter and still no documentation of a fall or seizure. They tried to send her back to Salem but I refused. She was released to Berkshire Health not by ambulance as is protocol, but had my sister drive her. LG refused to allow her into their rehab because she didn’t fit their protocol because she now has a now weight bearing broken foot that happened in their care.

Lowest quality of care as possible. Says wait is 10 minutes. But that is just to sign in. Don’t be fooled by false advertisement. The wait is long and the care is poor. You are stuck in the hall with all your business being aired out to all the other people stuck in the hall. They do not care about HIPPA violations. Only to get you in and out and pick your pockets. My daughter has been sick for 5 days. She has been vomiting off and on. Unable to hold down food. Weak, sunken eyes, orange, sediment in urine. Did they care. No one bag of fluid and sent her home. They had to hurry to the next patient in the hallway.

I wanted to give a shout out and recognition to RN Peter Bradshaw who is obviously a caring and tentative worker. He took all the extra steps to be sure my wife was receiving the care she needed while in the hospital over the Christmas holidays. We appreciate his service.

My hat is off to Nancy at LewisGale Physical Therapy who helped me recover my strength and balance following a December accident and a broken leg. I had an excellent experience and a good recovery. Nancy was good about diagnosing my specific needs and providing appropriate exercises. I highly recommend LG-PT!

The doctors don't communicate with each other. My dad was in this hospital and every doctor we talked to said something different about their plan for him. The doctors won't call you back when you have a question or wanting a update. Just was a all around bad experience dealing with this hospital. Wouldn't recommend.

I was told to be there at 6:30am to register for a 7:00am appointment. I arrived a little before 6:30am to find that the registration office didn't even open until 7am, so I had to sit and wait for nearly 30 minutes. I was told that scheduling is done by someone in Richmond and they always tell people to be there early. That needs to be addressed because that is time wasted on the patient's part! Also, at the registration desk there was a lady helping another lady behind the counter. They lady who was supposedly helping was sort of rude to the lady she was trying to help, who had things under control to begin with. I was there for imaging and the tech I worked with was nice - he explained things well and the process went quickly once they took me back. Overall, it went fine, but it would have been nice to have been told a more appropriate arrival time.

I can only speak to the endoscopy area of the hospital. I am phobic about hospitals and medical stuff in general. I only get procedures done at the hospital itself after what happened to Joan Rivers. Let me say the ladies in this department of the hospital were stellar. Every one of them was nice and especially Casey. If your a scaredy cat about all things medical, she is the perfect one to take care of you. Nice work ladies.

I was very pleased how the whole process was spot on. Everyone was very nice to work with and they all explained themselves very well. I enjoyed the entire experience. I especially loved the Get Well Card from The Ambulatory Surgical Dept. My nurse was fantastic. Its a small world when you find out your nurse lives in the same town..I was blessed by all.

Everyone did an excellent job. However, walking in to a Kiosk and not a person is extremely impersonal and off-putting. Unsure (except for the obvious... money) why you've changed this aspect of your care but you should go back to the good old days when people helped people. The stay itself was excellent. The Doctors, Nurses and other support personnel were very caring, professional (yet personal and compassionate), and very efficient.

I received nothing but top-quality care while I was at this facility. I was treated with dignity and respect, and every need was attended to promptly. I live over an hour and a half away from this facility, and I will gladly drive there for my needs since the facilities here are horrible. The only complaint that I have is that the food could use some improvement, but it certainly isn't the worst that I've had in a facility. I highly recommend them and would like to say "thank you" to all of the staff members involved with my care!

I was in the hospital for 5 days before i had my baby and every single one of my nurses/doctors/residents/students/etc were heaven sent and i couldn’t have asked for a better team to be working with me through that tough time. I’m so grateful for each and every person who helped make my experience just that much better. Everyone was very friendly and not pushy about anything. Also very polite throughout the middle of the night in waking us up.

Best medical care and professional manner. Even though one procedure was quite embarrassing for me Maria Phillips and her nurse made me feel as comfortable as they could. Several collections were made, and a CT scan ordered and scheduled before 24 hours of my visit..I am confident in the care I received and my anxiety over my health calmed. I am so grateful and so blessed.

As the patient I would say that the doctors and nurses were very good to me. However my wife sat in the waiting room for over 4 hours and no one ever came to give her any updates on how my procedure was progressing or just to check on her. Others in the waiting room were constantly being updated. She wasn't happy.

I had a Low level CT Scan. Procedure went well !!! I was surprised there was no Dye involved. When I lived in RI I have a couple done with Dye. The lady that did the Scan was Super !!! I had questions, she answered them all. The Scan took about 5 minutes. Everyone involved from the Gentleman that check me it to the Wonderful Tech that did the the Scan were very professional, polite and just all around people persons. I apologize for not having the woman’s name for I misplaced the literature she handed me when I was leaving. She was really great and made me feel at ease. My name is Mark Rafferty, maybe you could look up the procedure to see the Tech’s name. Thank you

The Staff at Dr. Gross' office are great. They are professional, knowledgeable, respectful and have a great sense of humor. Shay and Kelly are assets to the team. Dr. Gross is a great Dermatologist. Very thorough and explains diagnosis and treatment to patients in detail. Dr. Long (resident) is also an outstanding doctor. He is knowledgeable, professional and respectful with a great sense of humor as well. Couldn't ask for a better team.

Had to get a little tune-up on my heart. The experience at L-G MC was about as good as I could have hoped for. The staff with whom I dealt were friendly, professional and competent. I had a very comfortable overnight stay and was visited early the next morning by my doctor. I was cleared for release and home by mid-morning. Thank you, L-G, for quality care.

I came to the ER in a bad way. The nursing staff worked close with the doctors, diagnosed and fixed my problems without judgement. They showed so much compassion it was amazing. They are truly a top notch group of providers in a top notch facility. I would never consider going to any other hospital or healthcare group. Thank you to the Doctors and Nurses who put me back together in my moment of need.

The staff were all very helpful! They treated me as a human and not just another surgery. I was told several times that I would be taken care of, and I was. From the nurses to the doctors and even the anesthesiologists, I was reassured that I would be okay! I was very pleased with the performance of everyone involved, they made my uncomfortable situation a lot easier! Thank you

I was taken by ambulance to Lewis Gale ER just days before Christmas. I was so sick with Covid, could hardly breathe, and found out shortly after arriving there that I had blood clots in my right leg and lungs. I was passing out quite a bit at home but thought it was from lack of oxygen. It turned out that my heart would stop beating between 3-5 seconds and then restart. My ER experience overall was impressive. I was immediately attended to by a staff of doctors and nurses that aggressively went into action to save my life. Together they sought not only to save my life but to better it by treating me with meds and encouragement. I was admitted to CCU and was there till after Christmas. I truly believe that God led this team of doctors in making the right the decision for my overall health and well-being. And also believe that I wouldn't be here to write about my experience had it not been for God's grace and the expertise of L/G's ER staff . A lifetime of "thank you " for all the loving care I received seems hardly adequate for this amazing team of doctors and all they did to save my life and improve the quality of it. Yet I am eternally grateful for each and every one of them !! May the kindness and care they showed me return to them a hundredfold. Most sincerely yours, Betty Wright

Everyone from ER sign in until discharge were amazing! Physician was kind, caring and thorough. Clinical staff were just as thorough and took time to answer my questions. Ultrasound tech completed my echo in time for my discharge too! Thank you for the Best Patient Care!!
