The care, support, understanding and expertise we received from Kartini is something that I will forever appreciate. The confusion, shock and trauma we experienced as our daughter suddenly descended into a severe eating disorder felt unreal at the time. To say we were in over our heads is an understatement. Kartini took my wife and me and our awesome daughter under their wing, cared for us all, and provided help and stability in a situation that was absolutely the most challenging, terrifying experience of our lives. And they got us through it. I can't imagine where we'd be now without their help. Honestly, I owe them everything. Each child's experience is different, for sure, and there is no one-size-fits-all solution. But the structure of the meal plan, and the support and love shown to my daughter in the face of her resistance and trauma, were exactly what we needed. And though she's doing really well a year later, the knowledge that Kartini is there if we need them down the road allows us all to sleep better at night. These are wonderful people doing wonderful things with kids and parents experiencing the horror of an eating disorder. Thank you, Kartini, for saving my daughter's life.

Having a kiddo who has an eating disorder is a terrible experience. There were times when I wondered about the process and whether it was working. Our daughter got worse before she got better. But we had to surrender to the process as parents who knew nothing about eating disorders or their treatment. The staff at Kartini is exceptional. Kind, caring, professional. Sure, there were times when I felt like they could have done a better job making ME feel better but there was never a time when I felt like they did not have my daughter's physical and mental health at the center of their focus. It was slow going for us. She was there in PHP for 4 months. She was a tough case. They held her close, kept her safe, saved her life. Every single day. AND they gave us the tools to continue to care for her after her discharge. The learning curve is steep and if you are thinking about Kartini as a treatment center for your kiddo, you are in a terrifying place. I wanted to deny the severity of our daughter's illness and I wanted to think that I knew what was best for her. Don't wait. It was a bumpy road for all of us. When you are in the throes of finding treatment and even during treatment, it is so hard to know if you are doing the right thing. Your kiddo's eating disorder will hate it, they will hate you, they will yell and fight you at every turn. Expect this. Looking back, I can say that Kartini was absolutely the right choice for us.

I feel the need to come back on because there is a huge lie in both Kartini and parents choosing to believe that so many reviews by the patients themselves are because they have a disordered perception. As a person with now 5 years of recovery after attending Balance, a 4.2 star treatment center in NY, I can attest to the fact that I experienced abuse at Balance, and my experience is not a disordered perception. I know that because it was the worst out of the 6 treatment centers I attended. Every single five star review is from a parent. The patient experience, as a child, was total scrutiny, lack of autonomy, and complete distrust in me. What this program fails to understand is that, while certainly weight is an essential part of recovery, damaging trust in order to get a person to a certain weight is traumatizing, and does far more harm than good. I was lied to about the medication that was prescribed to me, my food and body were controlled every minute through exact food calculations, and I was watched every second of the day. Intuitive eating is the only way to find recovery, and they, at least at the time, did not for a second teach about intuitive eating. My ED was me trying desperately to feel some sort of control after being assaulted. Kartini prevented me from reaching any of my trauma because I was so controlled in every second, that I was forced into survival mode. I could not let down any defenses. I am honestly appalled that this facility is still open. I know I hated this place in my ED. However, with a decade of separation, I know that this hatred came from knowing I was being deeply mistreated. I can’t imagine the fear my parents must have felt, the desperation and the love with which they chose this place. I wish they knew what is so clear now about how abusive this place is. I sincerely hope any parent reading the reviews chooses to listen to the survivors, not just the parents. Choose to listen to your kids. Choose to listen to the people who have experienced the treatment they provide. Discounting the stories of survivors by calling our experiences “disordered perceptions” is how treatment centers like Kartini continue to abuse children, and it needs to end.

We are profoundly grateful to the Kartini Clinic for the exceptional care that was provided, not only to our daughter, but to our family. Dr. Moshtael took time on the weekend while our daughter was in the hospital to do an assessment. While we were on a waitlist, Kartini provided us with potential resources. Once we were ready to start, the staff from intake team to insurance/billing services to the treatment staff were amazing in the way they interacted with us and were very organized. They showed such genuine care for our daughter and our family. While the recommendations for patients' at home care were daunting, we knew that Kartini staff knew the science. The support and guidance we received from family therapist Leslie and Dr. Moshtael literally helped save our daughter's life. Forever grateful.

I'm not going to bash this place, but I will share my true experience. My experience here was very negative and unhelpful. Although I did get medically stable, my mental health got worst than ever. It was honestly the lowest point in my life. After three months in this program, I was sent to residential and then hospitalized because this program only made my eating disorder less tolerable. I feel like I did not get the support I needed. I have many friends as well who have gone here who have had similar experiences, and in the recovery world, this clinic is known for being quite traumatic. It might work better for younger kids, but as a 14 year old, it was personally exhausting. They don't teach you how to eat off of an extremely strict meal plan which is exactly measured (which sounds a lot like ED behavior, but nobody wants to have that conversation). It makes clients engage in lots of secret behaviors because of the strict policy, making it feel like you will be punished for struggling with your eating disorder. The policy was that if you do not complete 100% all of the time, you will be tubed. That is extremely stressful! I have been to other treatment centers (Monte Nido facilities) which has helped me make a true and genuine recovery. I am doing the best I have done in a year thanks to them, but my experience at Kartini was definitely detrimental. Although their intentions may not be bad, I cannot recommend this place. Whoever is reading this, I hope you or your family member gets better soon. <3

Can’t say enough about Kartini Clinic and the Kartini staff. They saved my daughters life. They work with families and have an amazing way to help your kid get through the hard times of eating disorders. Highly recommended. You, as a family have to work together for this to work. Is a lot of work, but with Kartini’s help is very doable.

I noticed low ratings on Google from many which made me sad. As a parent with a child who was treated for ARFID, I cannot praise this clinic enough. The staff are caring, are educated, and bend over backwards to help these kids get better. As a parent you have to be prepared to do some hard work, and so does your child, and the work continues after you discharge. Their approach and methods will work, but you have to be willing to set aside everything you know and have learned about food and nutrition, and in some ways, parenting. If you are not open to adopting new ways of thinking about food, eating, and to some degree, parenting, your success will be less. My child never wanted to be there, and he complained almost daily about not want to go. He also has a sensory processing disorder and there is a requirement to wear pants, which he hated. But he still was there every day, doing the work, and the staff was so welcoming to him, that he tolerated it. The office staff was amazing, from billing to needing letters, documents - anything that helped us. Having a boy with an eating disorder is hard. It's hard to explain to others, and there are more girls than boys in treatment. But...the clinic never made us feel different or excluded in any way. ARFID is a newer diagnosis and I haven't found anyone or anywhere else that has the knowledge nor expertise to treat this disorder.

The staff is extremely caring. The program is comprehensive, meetings with family therapist, MD, parent support and nurse. No individual therapy, just FYI. We continued individual therapy outside of the clinic which they supported. I cannot say enough good things about Dr. Moshtael and Dr. Rao. Dr. Moshtael is excellent as far as really wanting understand and connect with the whole family. I believe she would go to the mat for my child with the insurance company if need be. She’s just fantastic. One of the most dedicated and caring providers I’ve ever encountered (I’ve worked in healthcare for 20 years). Dr. Rao is straightforward, very caring, knowledgeable and has a good sense of humor. We only had a few meetings with him but he had no trouble bantering back and forth with our precocious (read: sometimes snarky) 12 year old. His explanations to her very age appropriate and overall just a joy to work with him. I recommend the Kartini clinic with no reservations whatsoever.

The staff at Kartini Clinic is so helpful and knowledgeable. The medical team is top notch! Our child made great progress under Kartini's care and guidance. Communication with us as a family was outstanding and so organized. It's overwhelming to begin such a time intensive program, but they do everything possible to communicate clearly about appointment times, expectations, etc. Ironically, while our goal was to get the help our child needed and get out, it was actually hard to leave because we had come to feel like part of the Kartini family! We will always be grateful for their care and concern for our child during a challenging time!

Please think before sending your kids here When the reviews are brought up at Kartini they always dismiss them as the actions of people going through a hard time. But I’m weight restored and discharged after 6 weeks and I refuse to be told my opinion doesn’t have merit. Treatment works differently for everyone and if you have a kid around 14 or younger Kartini may be the place for them. From what I’ve seen, those in the sun group (the group dedicated to younger children) function relatively well throughout the day and I think the system they have implemented works better for them. But if you have kids old enough to be in the moon group please please reconsider your place of treatment. I’m 18 years old with an ARFID diagnosis. If you have anything but anorexia nervosa you will become a total afterthought. They say they treat a wide variety of eating disorders at Kartini but they are either not educated enough to help or just not interested in doing so. When I first read the reviews I thought the drugging thing might be a little over-exaggerated but they were completely correct. They will sedate you as soon as possible whether you need it or not. I personally did not and the side effects along with the extreme fatigue made my life a living hell. They also get irritated with you for falling asleep or napping as if it’s humanly possible to remain alert while on that much medication. The only thing Kartini really provided for me that worked was structured and supervised meal times but there are other places out there capable of that. If you send your kid here they will end up having to deal with way more than they should and the stress of being there will impact them negatively. I know as a parent you must be so scared for your child right now, but this is not the place.

I went here for seven weeks in August before my insurance cut me off and it is very different than traditional eating disorder treatment. As someone who is neurodivergent, it really worked for me. I think this program is best for children with atypical eating disorders. They let you pick your own meals and are very flexible if you have selective eating. They let my mom pack me meals from home because I didn't like the Kartini meals. They work with NG tubes and most children come straight from Randall's. As far as I know, this is one of the only PHP programs that works with NG tubes. Kartini is also one of the only programs that let's patients take a break from eating when they have the ng tube. This can be really helpful for some kids and the staff work with you on deciding when you'll give oral eating another try. Most other facilities do not give you this chance. You get put onto a group based on your age and every group has two program therapists who you see everyday. Other facilities have different staff everyday and there's people caring for you that you have never met before. But at Kartini, you form close relationships with the staff that you know you'll see everyday. There is no individual therapy, but they allow you to see an outpatient therapist during your time there. This was really great because I had a great therapist already who I could continue to see during my time at Kartini. There is great school support as well. The teacher is great and coordinates with your school and even teaches you classes if necessary. Which is much better than other programs that just have you do online school and leave you on your own. Kartini gave me the skills I needed to recover, but I didn't actually start getting better until after I left kartini. Don't expect instant results. I discharged Kartini with an ng tube because my insurance cut me off. It was really hard at the moment and I felt hopeless, but getting back to living my life without worrying about nutrition really helped me. Once I was in a better place, I started eating and now we barely use the ng tube and I'm getting it out soon. Going to Kartini really put me in a recovery mindset even though I wasn't eating. Other programs often make it impossible to get into this mindset because you are so overwhelmed and traumatized with everything going on. Kartini gives you the space and time you need to get into a better headspace before tackling meals which ensures longer term success than those who go right back to their old habits after leaving a traumatizing facility. Kartini being a PHP program is the best part about it. They are different than most PHPs, they offer a much higher level of care, but still let you go home at the end of the day to be with your family/friends and live your life somewhat. This program is not perfect and it is certainly not for everyone, but the Kartini staff are honest about it. When we had our intake, they told us that they know they have a bad reputation and it's true that they're program is not for everyone, but they leave it up to you and your parents to decide if you wanna give it a try. At that point I had to choose between kartini and a residential program in another state. My therapist convinced me to give Kartini a try and I am so grateful that I made the decision to go to Kartini. If I had not gone I would probably be in a much worse place. Kartini treats patients up to 18-19 years old, I was 17 when I went and am now 18. When my eating disorder started when I was 13, I was never sent to Kartini because every person we met had told us not to. I'm glad that we decided to give it a try despite the bad reviews this time around. I hope everyone finds what they're looking for. There's no one size fits all program. If you have a neurodivergent child or a child with an atypical eating disorder, Kartini might be worth giving a try.

Kind, Respectful, Up to Date on latest research. This clinic/partial hospitalization saved our kiddos life and helped them regain confidence in themselves. They also gave us a solid foundation to support our child in recovery and healthy living. Thank you Kartini

If you are seeking treatment for your loved one for an eating disorder, Kartini Clinic is a lifesaver! My son was treated at Kartini and the staff was supportive, professional, and kind. Through family therapy, they helped us navigate through a very difficult situation. My son was able to learn about his condition, and how to advocate for himself. We learned skills in helping him through challenges, as well. We finally received some insight into what our son had been going through for years. Their art therapy, on-site teacher, counselors, doctors, nurses-- all of their staff from the top-down were amazing and responsive. I cannot say enough about what a positive experience Kartini has been!

If I could give this place a "negative star" I would. This place needs to be shut down! NOW! I will continue coming on here even after years have gone by. My daughter was in there with an eating disorder about 10 years ago. Julie's "structured plan" was to get her in there, pile on as much weight as possible (in a short amount of time which is extremely hard on a body that is in starvation mode), pour on the medication so they can't feel or think, then send them out into the world with unrealistic expectations. After she left and, of course relapsed, we found a place in Arizona that was way more structured and realistic. I am happy to report that she is now in a way better place in her life and has gone on to channel her eating disorder into something positive. If I had a chance to go back, I would do my research. Unfortunately, 10 years ago, there wasn't much and we ended up trusting this place. PARENTS! DO YOUR RESEARCH!

I highly recommend Dr Moshtael and Kartini Clinic. They are compassionate, yet firm with eating disorders. While our journey with our daughter was not easy at the beginning, Kartini educated us and when she was discharged, we felt well equipped to continue recovery at home with our outpatient team. They have a fantastic team and are willing to do what it takes to free your child from ED and push for full recovery, rather than a life of partial recovery.

absolutely traumatized me. i’ve been to several other centers and this was the absolute worst one i’ve been to. all they do is focus on eating and weight gain. there’s barely any therapy there and i felt very controlled my entire stay. my family wasn’t even allowed to leave the house as well as me. Dr. M yelled at me to get out of her office one day and spiraled me into a panic attack. she made me feel bad for struggling with self harm, and went as far to tell me i was “poisoning her company” because i started to speak up. please do not send your child here. i get horrible anxiety when i even go near here and all my peers and friends from kartini feel the same. i immediately relapsed the second i left and am now doing much better NO THANKS to them. this place needs to be shut down. go to hell kartini.

Our family had a wonderful experience with Kartini, given the very difficult circumstances under which we ended up using their services. They helped us to identify what was happening with our child, after being dismissed and not being taken seriously by doctors. Dr Moshtael, Sherrill, Amy, Smadar and the entire staff at Kartini Clinic really held us up and supported our family in a time when our entire world imploded and fell apart, and we were completely lost. They were an instrumental part of the team that saved our child's life and restored our child's health from anorexia. I am beyond grateful that this clinic is in Portland, and that our family did not have to travel thousands of miles for our child's eating disorder treatment. Without a doubt, I would highly recommend Kartini Clinic if you have a young child struggling with an eating disorder.

First off a family member of mine assaulted in Portland multiple times and as a result she developed an eating disorder. I found the staff to be rude. They asked me to take my family member by 911 emergency which I found to be highly inappropriate! When I finally got the family member out of the house and into the office they made my family member see the other fragile patients. Also the Dr was very rude to me. She accused me of being a bad example to my family member. I'm tall and slender. Healthy as a horse. So shame on Kartini for judging me. I don't recommend Kartini on the fact that the Dr was inept.

Been here for binge treatment when I was a child and then anorexia when I was teenager. When I had binge disorder they advised my parents to lock the kitchen, they used negative coercion, threats and fear rather than positivity and reward, this mindset around food later contributed to the anorexia nervosa I later developed as a teenager. When I got treatment for anorexia, they treated me like an animal that can't have opinions or thoughts, this might've made more sense if it was bc I was saying or thinking things that were out of the question but I wasn't, was merely curious and they shut me down and any harmless questions I had. And I've been to other ed clinics before and they were never this awful to me, most of the staff especially doctor moshteal were extremely sadistic and genuinely took joy from my distraught. I kid you not, the doctor would smile with joy and even laugh when i, as a young teenage girl, would cry in her office after being yelled at and shamed for my disorder. It was such a bad, useless and harmful program that my parents took me out early (3 months was "early" I'd already been to a residential b4 this so this was an absurdly long time) and once out, that's when I actually started to recover no thanks to kartini. Don't go here unless you want to make your ed worse or get another one. Negative stars if I could

believe the patients. we have experienced it, and there's no way for parents to understand. realize that all the positive reviews come from outsider point of veiws. it's been over 2 years since my time here, but it was horrible and honestly traumatizing. i agree with every other negative comment i've seen. i left kartini hating myself even more. weight restoration isn't going to help if you don't deal with the mental part of the disorder. i had a re-check with doctor moshtael about a year ago and it was so horrible. she always made me feel so guilty and i completely shut down during my appointments wuth her. i left my recheck sobbing so hard i couldn't breathe and refused to stay for the rest of it. i'm so thankful to be gone. please go somewhere else for help

I went here the summer between my 8th grade and freshman year, I am now 19 so take my account with a grain of salt because it is possible they have improved since I have been there. I can confidently state that this clinic not only didn’t help but actively made my eating disorder worse. To begin the meal plans are heavily focused on getting you up to an “ideal weight”. They have no regard for the physical pain one goes through when transitioning from eating practically nothing to three meals a day plus snacks. I spent days at a table in tears because I was in physical pain from the amount of food. Then I was shamed for having to drink the provided protein shakes in order to make up for what I didn’t complete within the timed meal. The amount of food expected was honestly horrific and the plan is extremely generic. Honestly you’d think for a well established program they’d have a more personalized nutrition plan. The staff that worked in the rooms with us were amazing, although the doctors and founders were difficult to be around. I had one blatantly talk to me about “empty calories” while I was being treated for anorexia. The whole program is designed to get you back to a healthy weight but lacks anything that would help beyond that. As soon as I left I returned to old habits because all I was taught was how to hopefully distract myself from the problem. Distraction did not solve my ed, it made me believe I was better when in reality I was still very much a slave to my disorder. I would absolutely not recommend this program for children struggling with anorexia in specific. It is possible the other parts of their program are beneficial but I wouldn’t risk it.

This will be a rant of my experience of going to Kartini two separate times for around 3 months each. The only positive experience I got from this place as a patient (twice) was the fellow teens and a few of the staff members. Other than for connecting with other people with ED's, this is not the place to take your kid for treatment. When you first arrive they often put 'add ons' onto your meals, usually a smoothie or yoghurt. If you've been starving yourself for an amount of time then of course your stomach isn't going to take all that food very well. And one of the most frustrating parts of the program was no matter how much food you had left, you would get a 'boost', which is yet another drink they give you. Even if you had one bite left but just didn't finish in time, they would not allow you to finish it, and would instead take the plate and give you an entire 'boost', which does not motivate you to want to eat at all and instead creates a poor relationship with food-timing and the staff themselves. There were hardly any meal options, breakfast ranged from toast to granola and lunch ranged from a sandwich to soup. During individual therapy you would often be talked down to, stripped of your own choices (vegetarianism was heavily discouraged), and/or threatened with a feeding tube. There was a time that one of the higher-up staff told me I would be taken from my parents and 'in the hands of the state' if I continued to not get better. When I had the tube I was put in the art room alone with one other staff member during mealtimes and didn't get to interact with other people. One of the most traumatizing experiences each week was the family therapy, where the moon group therapist hardly listened to the patient themselves and each time left me and other patients crying throughout the session. The program doesn't allow for intuitive eating at all, and leaves no room for any food intake that isn't a part of the meal plan, which is incredibly damaging because extreme restriction is an ED behavior itself. As I said before, the only positives I gained were social based. Every Friday we got to write positive notes to the other kids in the moon group, and when someone discharged we wrote them letters of encouragement, and I still have several letters and notes on my wall. Animal assisted therapy was something to look forward to each week. Schooltime was enjoyable because there would sometimes be activities, same with art time. The only positive part of mealtimes was playing games whilst eating, like Jeopardy, Contact, and the 'movie game'. IOP was a much better experience as it was much more relaxed, and allowed you to wear normal clothes and hairstyles. It's been about two years but the staff members I remember being helpful was the IOP teacher, Daniel (school teacher), Madison(?) (art teacher), Lizz, and LeJames. Overall this is not a good place to send your kid to actually recover from an eating disorder. The only helpful thing from the program was that they taught you that you yourself and the ED were separate. Weight checks, individual check-ups, heavy monitoring, and family therapy were personally incredibly traumatizing, and to this day I have the habit of keeping doors open so parents/staff know I'm not purging. Patients weren't listened to at all, and the strictness of the meal plan did more harm than good. I still keep in touch with friends I made from the clinic, and it's sad to say that the majority of them (like me) have continued to struggle with EDs.

I really recommend it to my daughter. It helped her a lot with her eating disorder. She had to go to the clinic weighing 98 pounds and she came out weighing 134 pounds in a period of 8 weeks. Personally, they are very kind and Dr. Mycaila She is so adorable with the people, it gave me a pleasure to meet her and the entire team also, I really recommend it, they are very strict with their Rules and I really liked it ❤️
