We stayed here back in 2019 and have always wanted to come back, but they have been booked up every time we come out to the Black Hills (for good reasons!😊) We were so excited when we were able to book a cabin for our trip at the end of April and The Hinterwood did not disappoint. The location is perfect for enjoying the peace of nature but still central to everything you’d want to do in the Black Hills. We stayed in the Sage with our 2 boys and loved it — we loved that they provided a great choice of games and movies as sometimes the internet can be spotty though we didn’t really need them with all the things to explore outside! We hiked the trail around the property and loved the views of Black Elk Peak, nightly firepit (which they have firewood for purchase right on the property at a really great value!), and our boys loved checking out the chickens on the property. Highly, highly recommend the Hinterwood and will definitely stay here whenever we visit the Black Hills!

Phenomenal place to stay - could not recommend it more highly! In an entirely separate class above the other hoteling options in the area, to be sure. The property is gorgeous and peaceful, the rooms are immaculate and well decorated, and the logistics are seamless. If you are planning a trip to the Black Hills, do yourself a favor and stay at Hinterwood!

What a gem! We stayed in the Woodsley house for 5 nights and it was perfect for our group of 5 (4 adults, 1 toddler). It was modern yet with a cute rustic theme. The kitchen was fully stocked. There were board games, books, and blankets to view those starry nights. It was super quiet and conducive to a great night's sleep. This place is perfect for little kiddos - our son's favorite part of our trip was the roaming chickens and baby deer. It was the perfect oasis to come back to after our busy days exploring the Black Hills. We can't wait to come back!

This place is great! Clean, every detail well thought out. It has everything, just show up. The National forest is literally right outside your window and accessible from the property! Bring DVD’s if you need too, no streaming. But we were there to enjoy nature and relax!

What a beautiful place! If you want solitude but also to see the sights this is the place! Nestled between Keystone and Hill City and only shorts drives to Mount Rushmore and Custer State Park yet, on very peaceful property with plenty of its own wildlife. They have very friendly chickens- lol. The cabins have everything you need. There’s private fire pits and gas grills for each cabin. Check in and out was easy. The cabins are modern and clean. If ever back in the area, this is where I’m staying.

We stayed in the Poppy cabin during our stay at Hinterwood Inn and Cabins. We were very pleased with the cabin. It was comfortable and very well appointed with all the cooking utensils we could use. The linens were very nice, not worn at all, unlike many hotels. The location was central to most everything we wanted to do and see in the Black Hills. The cabins are set in a pretty valley with trees all around. We were visited by deer each morning and the Hinterwood hens were always nearby. We would highly recommend this property for your next trip to the Black Hills!

We had THE BEST time staying at Hinterwood Inn & Cabins. The location is perfect and so peaceful. We enjoyed the cute cabin and the property! Loved hiking the property and enjoying time at the secret table! Great place to stay when exploring the Black Hills! Highly recommend and would definitely love to go back again one day!

Stylish, clean, centrally-located, and we could hike right off the property! We will definitely want to stay here again next time we're in the Black Hills!

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Hinterwood Inn & Cabins. Very comfortable and much better than any hotel room. Our only regret was that we didn't get to stay longer.

I cannot say enough about this gorgeous property! Every room has a fireplace and is so cozy and perfectly decorated! From the moment you arrive, it's a sense of peace. If you're looking for tranquility, gorgeous views and to be immersed in the Black Hills, this is it!

Hinterwood cabins is one of the best places that I have ever experienced. It's peaceful and is surrounded by gorgeous pine trees and large mineral rocks jutting from the Black Hills. Kate is an amazing host and is very responsive and accomodating. I stayed in The Notch cabin which has a walking path right to the Black Hill Forest, is modern, and has a microwave, stove and gas grill. Outside, there is a large deck, a fire pit, and picnic table. This cabin has every imaginable item you need to prepare meals - tablewear, silverware, pots, pans, cutting boards, and cooking utencils. The shower was amazing and the beds were very comfortable. Hinterwood is located close to the Mt. Rushmore site and is easily accessible to hiking and other South Dakota attractions. I would highly recommend Hinterwood to everyone.

Went for a spontaneous late valentine vacation. We stayed in The Sage, it was exactly like a regular house. Such a cozy place to come in two after hiking in the snow all day. The hosts were incredible. We got quite a bit of snow and they were out there everyday plowing and even shoveling out the vehicles. We had three very long fires with only one basket of wood (we also cooked most meal on the fire). This place is perfect for a family vacation or a remote getaway.

Had a great stay at the Dray Cabin. We loved the location and the cabin was super clean and relaxing. We were able to have a nice fire in the fire pit, and grilled burgers on the grill. Check in and out was really easy. Loads of deer were around. We’d go back in a heartbeat. Our teens were even satisfied with the Wi-Fi speed. A real gem.

Amazing place to stay. Owners are nice and very accommodating. Stayed in Notch cabin and it was wonderful. Best place we stayed on the trip by far. Good water pressure and plenty of hot water, stocked kitchenware so you can pick up groceries and grill and cook via the oven, fire pit, or the grill. Owners have a helpful binder with info and resources to use appliances, rules for the property, hiking info, and more. Beds were very comfortable, and AC/heater worked great to keep the place at a pleasant temp. It is close to many of the SD attractions, and has good hiking nearby. The attached pics are from the owners land, on top of the nearby bluff which has overlook to Black Elk Peak. Would definitely come back if we ever find ourselves in the area.

We had a great time in Keystone and the area. Hinterwood Inn was a very peaceful and safe place to relax and get away. It was very clean. We enjoyed the cool nights and roasting marshmallows.

Beautiful and serene! My family stayed at the Woodsley for 9 nights and it was wonderful. As we drove the local roads to get to Hinterwood we felt we were in a storybook - breathtaking! The Hinterwood grounds are beautiful and create a private feel while being close to town. The chickens (and sometimes a cuddly dog) really add to the charm and really make you feel at home (vs a hotel or campground). The inn was cozy and modern. A great blend of being surrounded by nature while having modern amenities. Each item of decor seemed to be intentional to support this atmosphere. Reading a journal/book in the Woodsley of previous visitors and the amazing times they had reinforced what we were feeling. Just a perfect place to stay. In terms of other aspects of the house: great water pressure, air temperature, comfy beds, stocked with all you really need. Gas grill and fire pit allow you to have a great time at Hinterwood while letting you easily get to all the great attractions, trails, and restaurants if you choose to do so. Kate and Garrett were very responsive when we needed towels (we were there 9 days) and were so helpful with any questions we had. Walking the property was so fun and finding the secret table was a neat adventure without leaving the property. Great set up. I wouldn’t change a thing. Absolutely perfect. If we are ever in South Dakota again we’d definitely pick Hinterwood. Thanks, Kate and Garrett, for an amazing stay!

My wife and I just finished our stay at the Hinterwood Inn and Cottages in Keystone, SD. It was our first trip to South Dakota. We stayed at the Sage Cottage which sleeps 4. It was plenty big for the two of us. The cottage was very rustic and clean and so peaceful and quiet. It was the most relaxing vacation that we have ever had. The location is perfect because we were so close to all of the major attractions which of course we visited. The owners were the kindest and most helpful to us in every way. They were just a phone call away if you needed anything at all or simply ask any questions of which they would gladly respond to. There guest relations and customer service is unparalleled compared to everyone that we have ever dealt with. They have simply made our vacation here the best vacation of of our lifetime. My family of four recently stayed at the Hinterwood for four nights and had the best time! We stayed in the "Sage", which was perfect for two kids (daybed in the living room with a trundle bed). The kitchen was fully stocked with dishes, coffee maker/filters, and grilling tools - just bring your food! The bathroom was newly updated. The entire cabin was so CLEAN. It was the perfect place to relax after a long day of exploring. Our cabin had a great firepit area and our boys had so much fun exploring the beautiful property around the cabin and watching the chickens and deer. We hiked up to the "secret" picnic table one night and enjoyed a beautiful view. My kids had so much fun that we hiked up the next night too! Also, we had no issues with the WiFi, but you will most likely not have cell reception on the property. We had such a great stay at the Hinterwood - it really helped make our vacation extra special. We hope to stay again some day!

This place is a little slice of heaven! We rented the Notch cabin and it was plenty of space for our family of 6. It backs to national forest and the kids had a blast running outside climbing all the rocks and exploring. The cabin had everything we needed. The kitchen was fully equipped and made it so easy to cook and prep meals. They even have chairs and smore sticks for the outdoor fire pit. We loved hiking and exploring the Black Hills and the surrounding lakes. Will definitely be back!
