Wechiau Community Hippo Sanctuary is a community led tourism attraction project located at Wechiau in the Upper West Region of Ghana. It is run by the local communities and is committed to protecting and conserving the Hippopotamus and it's habitat along the Black Volta River in Ghana. This region is one of only two remaining hippopotamus populations left in Ghana and is vital to this species future survival throughout West Africa

A great example of community-based conservation site. Locals value and respect hippos; tourists can go on a rowboat tour to watch hippos and/or walk along the river to spot birds, in either case enjoying wildlife whilst causing only little disturbance to the animals. Entrance & guide fees are very reasonable, the office issues regular receipts and the money goes straight into the local community (at least it seems to). A hidden gem of Ghana, will surely come back again.

Simple nice attractions. Setup by the local village's. Hippos are mainly under water and you see them from far. The main attraction are the enthusiastic people and the boat trip it self.

Though sad that we couldn't get really close to the hippos as much as I would want to, it was a fun a great experience. Best to go with sunscreen, a hat, sunglasses and protective clothing so you don't suffer from sunburn.

Visiting the place was definitely the highlight of my stay in Ghana! The community is super nice, I had very kind guide. Hej was sharing with me plenty of stories and interesting information about hippos, local community and others. The distance to the place is quite long, but it's really worth doing!

Great place. You will need a few days to enjoy all it has to offer... Camping, trail hikes, bird watching, canoe rides on the black Volta to view hippos and other wildlife...and many more. The best part is that it's a local initiative and all proceeds go to developing the community. We saw schools, water treatment plants and energy generating plants all funded by the sanctuary. Any and all support given them is truly in a good cause.

The Wechiau Community Hippo Sanctuary is a unique community-based project, protecting and preserving the wildlife and the environment of the Black Volta River in Ghana's Upper West Region. The river is home to one of the two remaining hippopotamus populations in Ghana. I was thrilled to hear that the Wechiau has been a tourist attraction and the community leaders saw these as a great opportunities to become immersed in the local culture and activities. The African Culture is a legacy that should be preserved.

An extremely well organised and well maintained eco tourism project. The environment is very friendly and relaxing. The service is very quick and efficient. Special thanks to Idris, our volunteer guide, who was helpful and available at a minute's notice anywhere we fancied going or staying. The place has a great potential too and any investment, even an insignificant one, may bring huge improvement and more custom.
