Our expectations were high for this place. When we got there, though, we learned that what they do there was far beyond what we even thought was possible. The collection of sea relics they have there is astonishing. There is also an insectary, which is impressive. Other than that, the staff is very kind and the dogs that warmly welcomed us upon our arrival made the experience even more especial. I strong recommend paying the museum a visit.

Amazing place to know a little bit more about sea and its animals, but also the history of Punta del Este. Fun for adults and kids.

It's a beautiful museum, yes a bit old, but it contains an enormous amount of skeletons, informations and much else that you rarely see anywhere else. It really does have a lot of things, trust me, even the most unexpected ones. Highly recommended, you can easily spend a couple of hours reading through the descriptions.

By far the best collection of shells and marine mammal bones I've ever seen. A must see! Pictures don't do it justice.

This museum was AWESOME! Great for kids and adults. There are 4 museums included in the ticket, I loved them all, and my boyfriend who isn't a huge museum person really loved the museum of memories, which shows old packaging and memorabilia from the country/area. It was 250 pesos per person which I found good value, there is a great deal of information and specims on show. We are English speakers and whilst most of the explanations were in Spanish, the highlights had English explanations too. There is free WiFi so we could Google translate anything else we wanted.

It's definitely a roadside attraction, so be prepared for that. But if that's your thing, then you'll like this place. It's full of great collectibles and historical artifacts. It's obvious the owners care about their museum and hobby. Definitely worth a visit.

(Translated by Google) Very nice place to enjoy with the family. It opens from 10:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. every day. Tickets are $ 220 adults and $ 200 children (in cash). It has a collection of snails, skeletons of sea animals, animals preserved in formaldehyde, all with their description, very interesting. In addition, it has information and ancient objects, the history of Punta del Este and its references, as well as other spas. Also, in front it has a large insectarium, and they are setting up a museum of books. 12/30/2020 (Original) Muy lindo lugar para disfrutar en familia. Abre de 10:30 a 18:30 todos los días. Impressive collection of a lot of things and sea life. Didn't expect to fins such a place un Punta del este. Don´t miss to see the insects just in front of the museum. The entrance to the insects is for free. Perfect for a rainy day

The Museum of the Sea, opened in 1996, is a museum of natural history located in La Barra, in the department of Maldonado, Uruguay. It occupies about 2,300 m² and is divided into four large halls, which are open to the public all year round. It is a must go place when you are in Punta del Este because they have so many specimen of fishes insects birds , antiques and so on .

  • 5/5 Megan C. 5 years ago on Google
Certainly worth going. The collection is amazing.

  • 5/5 michelle d. 1 year ago on Google
If I could give it more than 5 stars, I would! I spent hours there and the only reason I left was because I was hungry and out of water. The marine specimens are just incredible for a science and anatomy nut like me. The antiquities were equally as fascinating and unexpected! There is so much to see and read that one visit is almost inadequate. The insectarium was also an added bonus wth its expansive specimen collection! If you like science, nostalgia and a bit of history, this is the place! Kudos to the owner and curator for their work!

There is some interesting thing but most explanation are in Spanish, very little in English. We left with an headache as there is very little aeration and there is a strong smell to probably preserve all the stuff inside. The worst was the insect museum, It was so strong that we left after few minutes. Also it is the same insects all over the display.

  • 5/5 Gavin P. 7 months ago on Google
Slightly morbid and grotesquely charming. What a wonderful place to spend a few hours. Many of the specimens are bleached by years in formaldehyde and some unrecognisable as creatures, let alone fish, but this is part of the joy of this place. Honestly. It’s a rambling shared personal love of the ocean and all things both in it, and to do with it. This museum has displays of bakelite radios, picnic sets, clothing and the music of the day, that day being early to mid twentieth century. There are quirky little corners and spaces where you’ll get lost in memories, not necessarily to do with the sea. And there’s music playing constantly. Ravel, Rodgers and Hammerstein, I swear a bit of Vivaldi. This place is just weird. I loved it. And do take the time to see the insect display across the road.

This is a must see for anyone that has an interest in the natural world. Pablo’s life work is on display for all to see for a very minimal fee. This collection has a very personal feeling with how it’s displayed and you can tell the work he has put into it has taken years. Highly recommend paying a visit.

Museo del Mar is ideal for anyone interested in sea, ocean, and coastal history, geography, archeology, geology, paleontology, marine biology, regional flora and fauna no matter the age of the one attending. It's specialized in the history of the Río de la Plata -River Plate- and the whole coast of Uruguay, but it has objects from all around the globe. The only thing that keeps me from giving it a five star rate is the humidity inside the museum and the strong smells, also there is no natural lighting and an excess of signs with information that makes it visually tiring. But in the whole its a museum woth visiting, you'll certainly see and learn some interesting facts you've probably never imagined!

Fun, quirky museum next to La Barra. A mix of everything: from Uruguay's sealife, punta del este's origin and even pirate stories. Definetly worth checking out with or without kids and a good choice for a rainy day.

(Translated by Google) Very nice place to learn about marine life, ideal to go as a couple or as a family, the entrance is $ 200 and it is totally worth it since you can take many photos and see great things. It is not only about marine life, there is also a collection of advertising from Uruguay from the time around 1950, personally it is one of the things that I liked the most and that I took the most advantage of to take photos, seeing the history of our country from that perspective was something innovative. It is a very large place with a lot to see, I recommend it. Hidden among the silver fir trees of the Maldonado bar is this unexpectedly well-stocked museum, in which you will find a wide variety of items on display, from marine fauna and flora, history of the Uruguayan coast beaches, ancient objects and even a insectary. It has space for children and access to bathrooms in acceptable conditions. The ticket price includes access to all facilities.
