Very nice old town, but the price-gouging of tourists is extremely bad, especially when compared to Bukhara. Ticket pricing is a joke, being 50,000Som to *walk* the streets (they are intending to block off all access to the old town unless you have a ticket), 100,000Som to access the sights and an additional 50,000Som to climb a minaret and a tower. We walked into one beautiful mosque,  and told we could not enter without a combined ticket. We watched as locals paid 3000Sym for entry, but refused to let us enter without paying their extortionate rate at the west gate. I pity future tourists for making their way to this wonderful old town, just to have every dollar squeezed from you.

The Khan's citadel - this is a gorgeous complex with room after room of captivating history ... as well as the chance to climb the tower and marvel at both the citadel and the rest of Khiva.

While the minarets are closed, this is undoubtedly the best place in the city to watch the sunset. Nice museums as well as well preserved artifacts, including an old currency mint

According to historical evidence, in 1686, Arang-khan began the construction of the citadel Kunya-ark at the western gates of Ichan-kala. The ark presented a complex multi-yard composition, containing a house for khan, the members of his family, and dignitaries. From the large numbers of constructions of the ark only several buildings of the nineteenth century and the beginning of the twentieth century were preserved. They were the official reception hall (kurinishkhana), a mosque, the mint, and a harem. Previously, there were an arsenal, a powder-mill, and an official building, warehouses, a kitchen, guardhouses, a stable, and a parade area. Fortified gates led to the citadel. A high-cogged wall separated the ark from the neighborhood dwellings of Ichan-kala.

Beautiful palace and fort in historic Itchan Kala. Spend some time to admire the amazing tile work, a sign of the work of Islamic artisans spanning the globe from China to Portugal. Climb up to the top levels for an amazing view over the city - it's best around sunset.

The Kuhna Ark was our next stop, built next to the Western Gate this was the fortress of the Emirs, the equivilant to a European castle keep. Originally built in the twelth century it contained stables, harem, throne room, barracks and a mint. A lot of the interior looked like it was still being excavated but there were some beautifully decorated audience rooms with incredible ceilings and doors. There were also steps that led to the watchtower which gave views over the city walls, a popular spot at sunset!

(Translated by Google) Kunya Ark (meaning "old fortress") - the citadel; located in the inner city of Khiva Ichan-Kala in modern Uzbekistan. Until the Khiva Khan was overthrown by the Bolsheviks in 1920, Kunya Ark served as one of the Khan residences. The existing Kunya Ark complex was restored at the beginning of the 19th century. The structure of the complex and the history of its creation To rule Kunya Ark connects the western wall of Ichan-Kala with the hermitage Ak-Sheikh-bobo. The construction of Kunya Ark began in 1686–1688 by the son of Anush Khan, Arang Khan. At the end of the 18th century, Kunya Ark became a “city within a city” and was separated from Ichan-Kala by a high wall. Once the fortress consisted of the Khan's office, reception hall, harem, winter and summer mosques, mint and outbuildings: stables, warehouses, workshops, etc. The square near the entrance to Kunya Ark was used for military parades and training battles. There was also a special place for the execution of sentences and zindan (prison), adjacent to the eastern walls of Kunya Ark. The entrance to the palace was guarded. Only a few buildings are left of the once densely built-up territory of Kunya Ark: the eastern gate with a room for security; Ak-Sheikh-Bobo cell; kurinishhona - room for reception and registration of people; summer and winter mosques and harem. The cell of Ak-Sheikh-Bobo is the dwelling of Ak-Sheikh-Bobo Sheikh, mentor Sheikh Mukhtar Vali, used to play the role of an observation tower, and gunpowder was kept here. The first building, the kurinishkhona, was built in 1686–1688 by Arang Khan and destroyed in the middle of the 18th century, during the invasion of the Iranians. The modern building was erected in 1804-1806 by Eltuzar Khan. Ivan Kurnishkhona was covered with majolica during the rule of Allakuli Khan. The kurinishkhona consists of several rooms: an open courtyard, an aivan, a hall with a throne, and side rooms in the western part of the courtyard (the Khan's treasury, a room for manuscripts, a rest room). In the middle of the courtyard there is a circular elevation, where a yurt stood, in which the khan received ambassadors of wandering neighbors. The throne of the khan stood at the southern wall of the throne room; Now this throne is in the museum of Moscow. It was made of wood and covered with plates of silver with a thin carved ornament, made in 1816 by Khiva master Muhammad. The territory of the harem in Kunya Ark was built up during the reign of Muhammad Rahim Khan II. The harem is located in the northern part of Kunya Ark. The courtyard extends from west to east and is built up with living quarters - one-column aivans and one- and two-story rooms behind them. The total size of the harem: 33h62 m; yard: 14.5х50 m The mint was built during the reign of Muhammad Rahim Khan I. It was built simultaneously with the summer and winter mosques.

For reference, if you go to the other wall such as the north gate, you can go up without paying, but the view is a little different.

While this site is beautiful to visit be aware of the Jewellery Gift Shop at its entrance. My niece and I purchased several pieces..over 20 items at high prices bec their few sales representatives, each and all claimed they r real precious stone and real Silver. After coming back to Canada I took them to the jewellery store and in fact they r fake. Very disappointing. Don't shop there. We bought jewellery from several other places and all were what the shop keep told us they were. Everyone we met was honest except this shop.
