📍 The Monument to the Unknown Soldier in Athens is a significant landmark that honors the brave soldiers who have sacrificed their lives for their country. Located in front of the Greek Parliament building, the monument features a ceremonial guard that stands in front of it, which is changed every hour on the hour. 💂 The guards are dressed in traditional Greek military attire, and their choreographed movements during the changing of the guard are fascinating to watch. 👌 Visitors to Athens should definitely take the time to witness the changing of the guard ceremony at the Monument to the Unknown Soldier.

(Translated by Google) No matter how many times one passes in front of the Greek Parliament when one looks at the guards of the Presidential Guard to guard the Monument of the Unknown Soldier, one can only feel a shiver pass through it. The Monument to the Unknown Soldier was erected in front of the Old Palaces in the 1930s and inaugurated on March 25, 1932, and like all monuments of this type in many countries around the world, it is a cenotaph in honor of those killed in the wars. The existence of a monument for the soldiers, who could not be buried so their souls would not rest in antiquity, begins with antiquity, with the Ancient Greeks who had the provision for the creation of a cenotaph dedicated to the Unknown Soldier, as mentioned by the ancient Thucydides . In recent years, the first monument to the Unknown Soldier, dedicated to the unknown soldiers - heroes of the Revolution of 1821, was erected in Ermoupolis, Syros in 1858, while the decision to create a monument in Athens was made in 1926 by dictator Theodoros Pangalos. The location of the Monument was suggested by the architect Emmanuel Lazaridis himself. The project is a P-shaped retreat made of large carved poros. The sculpture is located in the background and center of the whole work. On the left and right there are two side stairs while in the center there is a tomb in a rectangular frame and elevated. The sculpture depicts a naked male figure of a dead warrior, holding a circular shield in his left hand, wearing an ancient helmet on his head with his face turned sideways. The performance of the body of the dead by the artist gives the impression to the viewer that the Unknown Soldier is resting alive, ready to get up. To the left and right of the representation are engraved phrases from the work of Thucydides: On the left the phrase "An empty bed is covered with invisible" from the description of the burial ceremony before the recitation of the Epitaph of Pericles and on the right from the epitaph, while in the middle of the cenotaph the phrase: "To an invisible soldier" was engraved in smaller letters. The wall is surrounded on both sides by chipped porphyry stones, where the names of places engraved by the Greek army in deadly battles in modern history are engraved in sections. From the beginning of the handover of the Monument, a special military corps of the Guard of the President of the Republic undertook its honorary guard, which was renamed the Guard of the Monument of the Unknown Soldier. In 1935 with the return of George II the company was named Royal Guard, while since 1974 it was officially named Presidential Guard and is responsible for the twenty-four-hour honorary guarding of the Monument. In fact, every time there is a change of the Guard in front of the monument, it is a pole of attraction for those present, Greeks and non-Greeks alike.

Here is the thing, the tomb itself is rugged and plain, somber, in fact unremarkable. If it was not guarded by the guys in the funny suits you'd probably pass it by without noticing, but... it is flanked by the guys in funny suits! It is the changing of that guard, with the soldiers pony-like kicks and other theatrics that draws the tourists from around the world. It is a fun show to watch, to be sure, though I call into question the fighting ability of guys who tap-dance their way to their post.

Recommended to go during the changing of the guards (every hour). Beautiful, short and unique ceremony - must see while in Athens I would say. There’s no barriers for the crowds though and of course people have no manners, so try to pass by early morning or late in the evening so you can avoid having to slap someone.

Reading the reviews I thought the guard change only happens on Sunday mornings. But I was there on Saturday at 4PM and it was just starting. I 100% recommend seeing this as it is pretty cool to watch the “dance” of the guard change.

The cenotaph is located above Syntagma Square, in front of the Old Royal Palace, so easily accessible from the Syntagma Metro station. It is guarded around the clock by two soldiers in traditional uniform. The changing of the guards takes place on the hour, every hour, with a more impressive ceremony taking place at 11am on Sundays. The hourly ceremony is the reason why most people visit this place and it’s well worth the effort. The choreography and uniforms are fascinating, and the crowds (with the exception of the aforementioned Sunday ceremony) aren’t too large due to its frequency. Arriving 15-20 minutes beforehand should secure you a good spot. The area is completely in the open, so no shade. A hat and water are advisable in hot & sunny weather.

Must see in Athens. The changing of the guard happens at the top of every hour. This is centrally located and free. There is virtually no shade protection from the sun, but you only need to be there about 10min total. I regret not bring able to witness the Sunday afternoon parade. Please be respectful of the memorial and do not get closer than common sense dictates (several people tried this to get pocsand had to be told to retreat).

Tomb of the unknown soldier! We were able to see them on Sunday wearing their traditional clothing. Awesome to see them perform the changing of the guard. We caught it just in time. They do the changing every hour and apparently have to be a minimum of 185cm tall. They move their legs kind of similarly to a show horse and make loud clasp noises with their shoes. Definitively worth checking it out! We were impressed with the ceremony.

Nice to visit especially to see the change of guard. Happens 11:00 a.m. everyday. Memorial to all the soldiers who died in wars. It is a competitive role for soldiers to get the position to guard this tomb. They have specific criteria including height (185 cm), have to be "good looking", cannot have a mustache until it is earned. Very distinct uniform. Each shoe weighs 1.5 kilo.

The monument to the unknown soldier is constantly guarded by two soldiers. Every hour they change the guards and you can see the change of guards, this is done in a strict way following a fixed ritual. This is infront of the parliament. Apparently on Sundays it looks even nicer because they wear a different outfit. Also at eleven on Sunday there is a larger event with a military band. It is worth visiting around the whole hour when they change guards.

Extremely great place, worth visiting. The guards 💂 are dressed to perfection and seems to be so much absorbed and drowned in their duty and responsibility. Their passion towards the country is so much evident with a strong grit and determination written all over their faces. The body posture is fantastically rather majestically poised to the love for their patriotism.

The Monument to the Unknown Soldier Built between 1930 & 1932. It was erected to honor the fallen soldiers of the Greek Wars of Independence and all unknown soldiers who have given their lives for Greece. The monument consists of a tomb containing the remains of an unknown soldier, surrounded by a garden and guarded by the Evzones, a special unit of the Greek military. The formal version of the guard uniform is white and worn on Sundays and at official occasions. Khaki uniform is worn in summer and navy blue in winter. The changing of the guard ceremony takes place every hour at the monument and it is a free popular tourist attraction in Athens.

Changing of the guard takes place on the hour, every hour and is a very touristy thing to observe. Great skill, balance and fitness from the soldiers and even more impressive when you realised they are doing it in hob nailed boots on a marble surface.

Interesting to watch. We were there for the morning changing of the guard (9am) mid-July, so crowd-wise it wasn’t too bad. There was one tour group there. No barriers- you are told to stand behind the white line. There’s lots of white lines. Very hot even at that time. They’re lucky they’ve got their shift in the shade. I feel like Mr. Miyagi got his karate kid move from here!

The changing of the guard is a spectacular programme. It is worth arriving a little early, as there are already many people waiting in the square half an hour before the event. I recommend the changing of the guard behind the Parliament, you can get there through the park.

Change of guard happens every hour, though you’ll want to catch the Sunday 11am one. It is said to be the most special. The uniforms that the guards adorn on Sunday are also different - it seems more exquisite and formal, so try to come on a Sunday if possible. Try to be respectful and remain quiet during the process as well. The monument is holds quite deep meaning so it is worth reading up about why soldiers are guarding it.

Hats off to the guards on duty! They have to stand there without moving, until relieved at the change over an hour later. The ceremony happens at the change of the hour. Be aware that the guards march in directly in front of the tomb, so if you are standing there you will be told to move. Pick a waiting spot either to the left or right of the middle. Once they have passed, you can stand directly in front.

I was late 3 mins due to using wrong pathway. But i think it is still cool to watch the soldier uniform and the monument in Greek writings. The changing guard is always on the hour (9am, 10am, 11am etc.) in 24 hrs

The precision with which the changing of the hairs happens is amazing. The routine and uniform is steeped in history back to when the Ottoman Empire was defeated and has references to the horses used in the battle. The change takes some time so this is a time lapse and is not meant to demean or ridicule the tradition.

Going here to see the changing of the guard 💂 is an awesome experience. These guys have so much training. It was 43 degrees when we went and they were still in full uniform doing everything in time ⌛⌚ Well done. Statue itself is an interesting and takes into account the long history of Greece, using the hoplite helmet design. Definitely worth going on the Sunday to see the guards change in full ceremony

We were just walking past it and so happened the change of guards were done. It was an interesting experience, not as grand as in London, but still an amazing experience. The change of guards take around 10 min, and there is a lot of slow movements, but it is still an enjoyable time for me. Even without the changing of guards, do not overlook this place, and feel free to stop for a short while to take some pictures as it still looks nice.

I was slightly disappointed when I approached the guard houses and it was actually mannequins dressed in traditional Greek soldier uniform instead of a real person. But nonetheless, the tomb is between the two guard houses. There is always a real soldier in modern uniform to prevent people from approaching the tomb. I would say it’s nice but not necessary to visit.

The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier is a war memorial located just in front of the Hellenic Parliament Square in Athens, It is a cenotaph dedicated to the Greek soldiers who were killed during war. The place is protected by the Greek Guard which changes shifts daily at noon (12:00 pm) in the middle of a ceremony that last around 10 minutes My wife and I visited this place after a walkthrough the National Athens Garden and we were impressed by the precise movements performed by the soldiers, definitely a must to see when visiting Athens. Also the place is aside Sintagma Square and it is quite well connected by underground, bus and tram, just arrive before 12:00 hrs. To avoid crowds. the best days to stop here are during weekdays

(Translated by Google) Awe and pride for every Greek. The process of changing the Presidential Guard, which guards the monument of the Unknown Soldier, is impressive! (Original) Δέος και υπερηφάνια για κάθε Έλληνα. Εντυπωσιακή η διαδικασία αλλαγής της Προεδρικής φρουράς, που φυλάσσει το μνημείο του Άγνωστου Στρατιώτη!

The changing of the guard is a must-see when visiting Athens. The soldiers are clad in traditional uniform with elements that date back to hundreds of years.

The exchange of the guard is quite an interesting thing to see here (looks unusual compared to change of the guards that I've seen elsewhere). Google the hours of the change to be sure (they seem to vary in summer/winter) but I was there at 11:00 during summer.

Great Greek restaurant in Athens. Friendly staff, good food and fair prices. Very much recommended.

We were told by our hotel reception that the changing of the guards is a must see. We went there with high expectations... Needless to say, we were extremely disappointed. We read online that they do some sort of elaborate/traditional movements when changing guards. It was just the guy bringing in two new guards and guide them to their posts. That's it. Waited about 30 mins and within 2 minutes, they were done.

If you manage to see the change of a guard, you will beyond impressed and delighted with the precision & elegance this is done. From the movements to the outfits, everything is simply perfection.

Must see. Its very quick (they walk back and forth is all we could see, but maybe there is more at other times) so we did it on the way to other things and I suggest doing it like that. Many military/police in the area due to it being right in front of Parliament.

Very interesting to watch - many tourists show up on the hour! My recommendation, watch it live - don’t record the whole thing! You’ll probably never watch it again on the phone ! experience through your own eyes !

If I’m Athens you must go and see the change of the soldiers. It’s on every full hour. I am still deciding if it’s amazing or hilarious, but definitely a must see!

We loved watching the change of the guard. It is on the hour. We went at 10am and there were only a few other people. The kids were very entertained by the soldiers. Bonus - its free and it’s super close to the National garden park which is lovely to walk through and has two great play areas especially Bars Playground.

A must see during your stay in Athens. While you visit the Syntagma Square and you run into the Hellenic Parliament you will see every hour a spectacular show with performance of the members of the Presidential Guards. This unit guards the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. The shows takes place in whatever weather condition and at every hour puntctually The guards wear their original uniforms and very special shoes . Very interesting and unique.

Must see (the change of guard which happens every hour). The soldiers wearing their ceremonial overalls look impressive. It is located at a very central place. Syntagma square.

The “changing of the guard” is a must see at this impressive memorial to the Greek military and those men who gave the ultimate sacrifice for their country. I have seen the “Tomb of the Unknown” in Arlington many times- this isn’t anything like it. Still, very impressive.

The guards Evzones, protect this place with honour and grace. It is an exceptional sight to witness the change of guards, especially on a scorching 32'C day. A unique experience - respect. PS: It was truly moving when a senior officer wiped the sweat of an Evzone's forehead. Caring for his soldiers in a place of dignity.
